Opis:
Within the framework of the OPCOM project, operational and pre-operational tools have been developed to help the local players and decision-makers in managing the coastal environment. In this context operational or pre-operational model systems were applied to four very different coastal zones. The results were analysed for coastal zone management purposes according to the specific local demands for coastal man-agement in close co-operation with possible first users. This publication describes the experience and most important conclusions derived in the OPCOM project regarding the importance and application possibilities of local operational models in integrated coastal zone management.

Opis:
Integrated Coastal Zone Management is an emerging research area. The aim is to provide a global view of different and heterogeneous aspects interacting in a geographical area. Decision Support Systems, integrating Computational Intelligence methods, can be successfully used to estimate useful anthropic and environmental indexes. Bayesian Networks have been widely used in the environmental science domain. In this paper a Bayesian model for estimating the Sustainable Coastal Index is presented. The designed Bayesian Network consists of 17 nodes, hierarchically organized in 4 layers. The first layer is initialized with the season and the physiographic region information. In the second layer, the first-order indexes, depending on raw data, of physiographic regions are computed. The third layer estimates the second-order indexes of the analyzed physiographic regions. In the fourth layer, the global Sustainable Coastal Index is inferred. Processed data refers to 13 physiographic regions in the Province of Trapani, western Sicily, Italy. Gathered data describes the environmental information, the agricultural, fisheries, and economical behaviors of the local population and land. The Bayesian Network was trained and tested using a real dataset acquired between 2000 and 2006. The developed system presents interesting results.

Opis:
Various types of utilization, conflicting interests and environmental problems call for coastal water management as part of an integrated coastal zone management. This is especially necessary for the Oder (Odra) estuary at the German/Polish border. The river Oder causes severe, ongoing and large scale eutrophication, which limits the ecological and economic value of its adjacent coastal ecosystems. Simulation models are an important tool with which to tackle these practical problems and support management. We present a general concept of a decision support system with an integration of sub-models. Two types of models for long-term water quality forecasts and scenario simulations, as well as short-term prediction of water pollution are available at present. Spatial human-pathogenic virus transport and decay simulations are used as an example to demonstrate their practical use.

The database was created in response to the need of obtaining complex information necessary for efficient management of the Polish coastal zone. Database preparation processes are co-ordinated within the EU PHARE project focusing on harmonising such databases in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. The majority of the information concerns the geographical objects, therefore the database was generated with application of Geographic Information Systems.

Opis:
The coastal zone is an interactive and dynamic complex of sub-systems, where human activities and natural processes in one sub-system may adversely affect other sub-systems. Therefore, one of the most important issues in the area of coastal zone management (CZM) is to avoid conflicts and to prevent overlapping of development interests of the various resource sectors such as tourism development, land use planning, etc. The GMS-Decide is the software designed to create, organise and analyse data as it relates to the geographical information. It can be used for scientific investigations, resource management and development planning. For CZM purposes, GMS might allow emergency planners and decision-makers to easily calculate emergency response in the event of a natural disaster. In the strictest sense, a GMS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations, which is extremely useful to deal with coastal areas.

Opis:
Within the framework of the MEDCORE project on the ecology and management of Mediterranean coastal areas we decided to include the local dissemination of scientific results in Tunisia. The involvement of a local public school, and the joint work of local teachers and of local and international researchers, was chosen as a dissemination method because of the role of the school as an educational centre and the natural interest and curiosity characterising the schoolchildren. As the subject of the experience of dissemination a beach-dune system was considered suitable because of it was near, familiar and easy to reach, and also because of the economic importance of such environments, which generate considerable income as a result of tourists frequenting them. In environmental education, however, less emphasis is placed on this particular environment. A test performed before and after a school trip to the beach showed an increase in knowledge among children about beach-dune systems. Correlations between the gender and background of the children with their previous knowledge and information acquired from the field experience were analysed, and found to be not significant. All the children were equally receptive to environmental issues, regardless of their gender or background (urban/rural environment). One of the main results obtained through this experience is the effectiveness of sharing knowledge with local people, as stakeholders of study sites. The next step in the process of disseminating scientific knowledge for the benefit of the local community should be to examine its possible long-term effects.
