Opis:
In a previous work (Opt. Appl. 39(2), 2009, pp. 415–428) we established the characteristics that a computer-based contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measurement system has to be used in the opthalmological clinic. In order to obtain a generalized use of CSF in clinics and as a screening tool, the necessity to incorporate a normality range by age was also suggested. It will also be important to establish how many reference curves are necessary, because in the last decades, different ranges have been presented in the literature. In the present work, our purpose was to show how to distribute the observers in terms of the statistical variations of CSF as a function of age in a normal population of healthy eyes. We then evaluated the utility of these curves in the detection of vision problems and, finally, the possibility of using them as a screening tool considering a reduced number of spatial frequencies. We used a computer-based CSF measurement system to present sinusoidal gratings whose values range from 1 to 24 cycles per degree. Three different groups (control, clinical and non-clinical) of subjects were considered. From the statistical analysis we obtained two ranges of normality, based on significant differences that appear around the age of 50. As we were interested in evaluating if this separation could increase the sensitivity of the test, we also performed a series of measurements in a clinical environment. As an interesting possibility of usage of a vision test is screening, we also measured people in conditions relatively different to those found in laboratories or clinics. We observed that this division into two ranges allows a better discrimination, especially for young adults. Measurements show an improvement of 22% in the detection of vision anomalies.

Opis:
Introduction: The paper aims to demonstrate the Clinic’s and own research in the treatment of major salivary gland tumors. Material and method: In the years 2013–2019, there were 95 salivary gland surgeries, including 45 performed in women (47.36%) aged between 24 and 82 and in 50 men (52.64%) aged 29 to 86. Diagnostics of major salivary glands included: patient history, otolaryngological examination, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration (BACC) (of tumor), laboratory tests (morphology, CRP) and computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately assess salivary glands, location of lesion and lymph nodes prior to elective surgery. Research results: In the analyzed material patients with major salivary gland tumors were most frequently operated on at the age of 61–70 (34.7%) and 51–60 years (23.2%). Most patients with tumors were hospitalized in the last 4 years between 2016–2019, which accounted for 77.8% of all operated cases. Among the operated lesions, benign neoplasms and tumors occurred in 93.7%, of which the most frequent findings in histopathological examination were Warthin tumor in 50.5%, and multiform adenoma in 26.3%. The remaining tumors and benign neoplasms constituted only 16.9% and were observed in isolated cases, including eosinophilic adenoma, lymphoepithelial cyst, myoepithelial adenoma, lipofibrosarcoma, congestive cyst, air cyst, tubular adenoma, basal cell carcinoma, cyst with squamous metaplasia features, vascular malformation. Malignant salivary gland tumors were found in 6.3%, including the following malignant tumors were revealed histopathologically: adenocarcinoma, mucoepidermal carcinoma, acinocellular carcinoma, epithelialmyoepithelial carcinoma, ductal carcinoma. Conclusions: The majority of operated salivary gland tumors were benign (93.7%), of which the most common histopathologically were: Warthin tumor (50.5%) and multiform adenoma (26.3%), while malignant tumors occurred in 6.3%. Tumors were localized mainly in the parotid gland in as many as 93.7% cases, of which the most common localization concerned the superficial lobe in 56.8%. The most frequent surgical technique used in the Clinic was extracapsular dissection of the tumor in 88.4%, and other methods were used rarely.

Opis:
The article investigates the problems of scheduling methods for making up the schedules for medical care institutions, with a view to further optimization the conditions and improvement the patient care. It is noted that a key step in the operation of medical institutions is the scheduling stage process. Depending on the specifics of a particular institution, work plans take different forms, mostly turning into a timetable. It is established that there are a number of scheduling methods, ranging from manual planning and mathematical programming with limitations, ending with the use of artificial intelligence. Most methods consist of two or more stages and initially require the construction of the very schedule that satisfies the strict limitations of the institution functioning. At a later stage the scheduling optimization of one or more criteria is regarded. The types of finite-state automata are analyzed and, with their use, developed a method for constructing the supporting schedules for clinics. An algorithm of finite-state machines for clinic schedule construction is established.

While studying the law, for the students is very important to be in touch with legal issues and the real needs of the society. A legal clinic, also called a law school clinic or law clinic, is a program organized through a law school that allows students to receive law school credit as they work part-time in real legal service atmospheres. In legal clinics, students perform various tasks just as an attorney would do in the same job position, such as doing legal research, drafting briefs and other legal documents, and interviewing clients. Many jurisdictions even allow students to appear in court on behalf of clients, even in criminal defense. Legal clinics is part of the academic law program in the most of the law faculties all over the world and it has a great impact in the community’s life. Throughout legal clinics students not only get the opportunity to be part of an important experience, but also they can be effective and help the people in need with their work. This paper aims to bring attention to the importance of clinical education in the formation of young lawyers and how one can learn from experience. There will be discussed important issues about legal clinic, the objectives and its mission, how to apply it and the benefits legal clinic brings not only for the academic area but also for the society.

Opis:
Lyme disease (also known as borreliosis) is defined as an infectious disease caused by a spirochete called Borrelia burgdorferi. It occurs in three stages: early localized infection, early disseminated infection and late persistent infections that affect many organs. In order to assess the clinical course, including the transition to the late persistent infection stage, medical records of a group of 175 patients, who reported at the Infectious Disease Clinic in Szczecin after treating chronic erythema in 2004, were analyzed. Clinical symptoms, presence of serological exponents and frequency of transition into the late persistent infection stage were assessed. In majority of the observed patients, the infection was limited to erythema migrans. Average time, in which serological negativization in the IgM class occurred was 13.2 months, 15 people throughout the observation time showed the presence of antibodies in the IgM class, which were not associated with clinical exponents of the disease. In 8 patients (4.6%) the infection turned into a chronic-arthral form. Lyme borreliosis, when properly treated and taken care of in the first stage, rarely becomes a chronic disease.
Borelioza z Lyme, o ile odpowiednio leczona w pierwszym okresie, stosunkowo rzadko przechodzi w zakażenie przewlekłe.

INTRODUCTION: The abrupt transition to remote learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic clearly indicated the need to implement radical technological and institutional changes to the current approach to teaching. Virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) assisted programs have emerged as the new and effective methods utilized in education and medical training. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Virtual Clinic (VC) is a new online application developed by Polish medical universities which implement AI algorithms to teach students the medical interview including obtaining patients medical history, performing a physical examination as well as diagnostics and treatment planning. Our study enrolled 164 medical students who tested the VC and completed an online questionnaire. RESULTS: The results of the survey showed that 93.9% of the respondents believe that the VC will prove effective as an educational tool supporting teaching at faculties of medicine and health sciences. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary experiences suggest that the use of AI assisted programs such as the VC seems highly anticipated and justified in medical higher education.
WPROWADZENIE: Nagłe przejście na nauczanie zdalne spowodowane pandemią COVID-19 jednoznacznie wskazało na konieczność wprowadzenia radykalnych zmian technologicznych i instytucjonalnych do nauczania. Programy wspomagane wirtualną rzeczywistością (virtual reality – VR) i sztuczną inteligencją (artificial intelligence – AI) stają się nowymi i skutecznymi metodami wykorzystywanymi w edukacji i szkoleniach medycznych. MATERIAŁ I METODY: Wirtualna Klinika (Virtual Clinic – VC) to nowa aplikacja internetowa opracowana przez polskie uniwersytety medyczne, które wdrażają algorytmy AI do nauki przeprowadzania wywiadu lekarskiego, w tym pozyskiwania historii choroby pacjenta, przeprowadzania badania przedmiotowego oraz diagnostyki i planowania leczenia. W badaniu wzięło udział 164 studentów medycyny, którzy przetestowali VC i wypełnili kwestionariusz online.

Fungi are organisms which occur in the human environment. One of the potential pathogenic fungi is Aspergillus which belongs to mould, and is an etiological factor of non-invasive fungal paranasal sinusitis. Objective. Epidemiological analysis of aspergillosis of the maxillary sinuses. Material and methods. Retrospective analysis of the medical histories of 41 patients treated in the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Medical University in Lublin, Poland between 2005–2014 due to non-invasive aspergillus maxillary sinusitis. The patients’ gender, age, and etiopathogenesis of the condition with signs and symptoms, and methods of treatment were analysed. Histological examination was crucial in the final diagnosis. Results. The majority of the patients constituted women aged 29–72. The most common complaints were suborbital pain, rhinorrhoea and impaired nasal ventilation. All the patients were treated surgically, and pharmacologically with Fluconazole. Conclusion. Fungal maxillary sinusitis should be taken into account in every case of chronic maxillary sinusitis resistant to standard treatment. Women are more susceptible to Aspergillosis, and the risk factors for the disease are endodontic treatment of the maxillary teeth and fistula antro-oralis post extractionem. Surgical treatment sometimes should be complemented by pharmacological antimycotic treatment.
