Opis:
Peatland rehabilitation is an urgent need in order to minimize the effects of peat degradation and to support climate change mitigation. However, the rehabilitation of degraded peatlands still faces many obstacles. This study aimed to study the agroforestry system on peatlands applied by traditional communities as an effort to discover a peatland rehabilitation strategy. This research was conducted in the Pilang, Tanjung Taruna, and Kalampangan villages from February to August 2019. The data in this study were obtained through field observations, interviews with the community, and Focus Group Discussion. The data was then synthesized using descriptive statistics. The results of data analysis showed that in the study area, six types of agroforestry systems were found. Communities develop different agroforestry systems at various types of peat depths. Farmers develop vegetable and fruit-based agroforestry on shallow peat, rubber-based agroforestry, annual crops and fruit on medium peat, fruit and rubber forestry plants on deep peat. Most farmers planted endemic species including Rubber (Havea braziliensis), Galam (Melaleuca leucadendra) and Gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens). The results of this study can be adopted as a peatland rehabilitation strategy since they are in accordance with the socio-culture of the local community and capable to accommodate economic and conservation interests.

Peat forest plays a principal role in climate change mitigation in Indonesia. Considering the potential releases of GHGs from a forest fire and degraded peatland, it is important to conserve peatland forests. Besides being essential for ecological balancing, the role of peatland forest expands to the economic and social aspects. The purpose of this research was to calculate $CO_2$ emissions that can be avoided by the community-based fire prevention and rewetting program. This research utilized spatial analysis to calculated avoided $CO_2$ emissions in six villages in Central Kalimantan. Data and information for the calculation were generated from field observations, interviews, and desk study. Spatial analysis using Arc GIS 10.5 was applied to compute the incombustible areas. The result from the analysis found that fire prevention and rewetting programs managed to prevent approximately 1 million Mg C or equivalent to 3.7 million $CO_2$. The program managed to prevent emission from the vulnerable area including swamp shrubs, plantations and dry land agriculture. The finding of this study suggests that community-based fire prevention and peatland rewetting programs could become a strategic program in climate change mitigation in Indonesia.

The present research deals with carbon sequestration, as an important process for mitigating the effects of climate change. The investigation focuses on a 30-year period and it covers only aboveground biomass that builds up from natural forest regrowth, excluding any plantation techniques. Potential carbon sequestration rate from natural forest regrowth in Godech Municipality was measured in Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and the resolution of the map was 1x1 km. The results of the study display that carbon accumulation values in the researched area were consistent with those that were expected in the largest parts of Bulgaria. The biggest share of Godech Municipality falls within the range of 0.82 – 0.96 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ with restricted areas around the villages of Barlya, Smolcha, Gubesh, Murgash and Varbnitsa that may accumulate between 0.96 – 1.11 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. In conclusion, carbon accumulation only from natural forest regrowth provides representative information, however it would have been better if different plantation techniques were regarded as well. The successful results of the investigation should encourage other studies of this type in the neighbouring municipalities.

Opis:
The architectural form of buildings is determined by many factors, one of the most important is construction technology. It remains in a close and inseparable relationship with architectural design. Contemporary technologies in construction are constantly subject to improvements, streamlining, changes aimed at increasing all kinds of efficiency (cost, thermal efficiency, labor input, etc.). One of today's widely discussed determinants of changes in the way buildings are designed and constructed is environmental issue. An awareness of environmental degradation and climate change and their consequences prompts the search for increasingly sustainable solutions. This paper summarizes the research on prefabricated solutions and their implementation, especially in single-family residential architecture. This article presents pre-design, design, and post-design experiences related to planning and realization of single-family houses with prefabricated wall technology made of light expanded clay concrete. The authors implemented comparative qualitative and quantitative research through case studies, the method also uses experiences from their own research by design practice. The advantages and disadvantages of prefabrication in the selected technology are presented. The authors attempt to answer the question of whether the individual architectural design approach is reflected in the relevant environmental considerations, including, first, those related to the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to its consequences, and to what extent the discussed technology fits into the assumptions of climate and environmentally responsible design.

The warming of the climate of the Earth has been unequivocal, most notably due to the mancaused increase of atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, leading to intensification of the greenhouse effect. Projections for the future explain that we are commited to further, possibly even more intense, warming, whose rate depends on the scenario of socio-economic development and effective climate change mitigation policy. If the global emissions grow in uncontrolled way and carbon sequestration potential decreases, the warming can attain a dangerous dimension. Global warming induces change in all variables of hydroclimatic systems. As demonstrated in the present contribution, the impacts of global climat change – both advantageous and (more often) adverse can be noted in all regions of the globe and in all systems and sectors, some of which are particularly vulnerable. Yet, many of these impacts can be avoided, reduced, or delayed, by effective climate change mitigation.

The BONUS MIRACLE project focuses on understanding the of the impact of climate change on water environments, including it’s affects on hydrological regimes and nutrient concentrations. The overall objective of MIRACLE is to initiate a social learning process in collaboration with stakeholders, that can identify new configurations for governance (conceptual, institutional, and practice based) in order to reduce nutrient enrichment and flood risk in the Baltic Sea region. These configurations should be understood as new solutions to protect water resources, ecosystem services and provide win-win solutions. To achieve this environmental modelling of the Reda catchment, Poland, is used as a pilot study for the project. Mathematical models which specified the detailed processes associated with water cycles, including determining interconnections and quantifying variables characteristic to the assessment of the water resource quantity and quality, were found to be useful. Due to the complexity of some models, launching, entering the appropriate data in the correct formats and calibrating the models proved to be challenging. Future developments in the water management sector should concentrate on specific local catchment areas where the application of integrated water resource management principles and the adaptation to climate change are more easily merged with local spatial planning. However, a larger number and higher frequency of measurements would be required.

Opis:
Livestock are reared throughout the world, and are an important agricultural product in virtually every country. This animal production systems and climate change are inter-related via complex mechanisms. Animal production influences climate change by emitting greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. It is estimated to be the livestock sector is contributing a significant share of global GHG emissions, accounting for approximately two-thirds of direct agricultural emissions and about 14.5 percent of total human-induced emissions when supply chains are considered. Therefore, globally, there is an urgent need to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that cause climate change by at least 80 per cent in wealthy countries and to protect the biodiversity which underpins food production. Dietary manipulation, ionophores, bacteriocins, covered anaerobic digesters, awareness creation and intensifying research and development are among the applicable methane mitigation strategies. Moreover, research bodies are also organizing to deliver findings at an international level; which focuses on the identification and development of technologies and practices to increase food production without increasing green house gases emissions.

Forestry has a significant role to play in green economy transformation process of African Continent. It is important to provide strong rationale that will link the forest to economic development. This paper therefore provides useful information on the potential of forest resources for socio-economic improvement with emphasize on the status of African forest. The paper reviewed the role of forest in climate change mitigation and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals as well as the role of forest in attaining industrialization. It was revealed that Central Africa has highest forest area with North Africa having lowest forest area. However, in terms of planted forest North Africa has highest area while Central Africa has lowest area. More so through sustainable management of forest some SDGs can be achieved. Forest is found to be useful approach in climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. The strategies that can be adopted to improve the status of African forest include sustainable management of forest resources, afforestation and improved agroforestry practices. The paper recommends policy strategy that will re-position forestry subsector in order to achieve its primary roles in the climate change mitigation, economy and promote agroforestry to increase forest cover.

Opis:
The lack of implementation of the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) of the non-Annexe I Parties registered in the NAMA Registry of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is a worrying situation in the sense that it is limiting the contributions these NAMA projects would have made towards mitigating global climate change. There is however little research on the reasons behind the lack of implementation of these NAMAs projects and this is the knowledge gap that this paper seeks to fill based on a critical overview of the NAMAs of Ethiopia, Indonesia and Georgia. The source of data for this paper is mainly from the focal persons for the NAMAs of the countries under study, which was obtained via telephone and Skype interviews with the respondents. Our findings show that lack of funding, complicated financial mechanisms, lack of technical expertise, fringe condi- tions to donor support and policy issues according to the findings of this study are the main hindrances to the implementation of NAMAs. International organisations, donor partners, developed countries and local governments alike are therefore encouraged to channel some of the funds meant for fighting global climate change into sponsoring the NAMAs of poorer countries, as this will see to the successful implementations of these NAMAs and their subsequent impacts on mitigating global climate change. The paper is also timely considering the scarcity of literature on NAMAs related issues.

Climate change and its negative consequences represent a common problem for all the people on Earth and are likely to become one of the most serious challenges that humankind faces. As such, mitigation measures and adaptation actions are of particular importance. Although often thought as the two sides of the same coin, the climate change mitigation and adaptation differ from each other, especially in the context of indigenous peoples. Therefore, the first part of the paper centres on the relation between climate change mitigation and adaptation and their consequences for indigenous communities. The newest international treaty on climate change, the Paris Agreement, establishes the global goal on adaptation, which should take into consideration vulnerable groups, communities and ecosystems, and more importantly, should be based on and guided by the best available science and knowledge of indigenous peoples, often referred to as ‘traditional knowledge’. As such, the second part of the paper focuses on the adaptation methods guided by the traditional knowledge. Although examples include indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge from all over the globe, much attention is given to the Arctic Indigenous Peoples as, due to current speed of climate change, the Arctic is recognized as a global climate change hotspot. Although indigenous peoples have been living in their territories since the time immemorial, adapting their ways of life to the difficult weather and environmental conditions, with the current climate change happening so rapidly, their possibilities of adaptation are weakening and climate change renders them more vulnerable, altering their economic and cultural activities and threatening their very existence. However, the current rate of climate change is not the only factor impairing the indigenous peoples’ adaptive capacities. Therefore, the final part of the paper is aimed at presenting what the obstacles to the successful adaptation to climate change are and whether migration should be considered an adaptive action.

This paper presents the problem of the increasing negative impact of urban heat islands (UHI) on urban residents based on land surface temperature (LST). It is assumed that water bodies in the agglomeration remain cooler than the air and surrounding urban areas. The study aimed to determine the impact of water bodies and surrounding areas covered by trees on the temperature of an urban area and to minimise the impact of UHI on the life quality of people in the temperate climate zone at day temperatures 25°C (W day) and 29°C (H day). In the adopted research methodology, 167 reservoirs, larger than 1 ha, located within 300 m of urban areas, were analysed. Satellite thermal imagery, spatial land use data (Corine Land Cover), and local land characteristics were used. The average temperature of the reservoirs was appropriately at 4.69°C on W day and 1.9°C for H day lower than in residential areas. The average temperature of areas at a distance of 30 m from the reservoirs was 2.69°C higher on W and 0.32°C higher on H than the water of the reservoirs. The area covered by trees was 0.52°C lower on W day and 0.39°C lower on H day than the residential areas located at a distance of 300 m from the reservoir. On terrestrial areas, the lowest temperature was observed in the area covered by trees within 0-30 m from reservoirs both on warm and hot days. Based on the results of this study, UHI mitigation solutions can be suggested.

The surface water temperature in the Baltic Sea has been growing as a consequence of broader changes of the Earth’s climate, which contributes to the proliferation of natural bacterioplankton and new types of bacteria, such as Vibrio vulnificus, in the region. This pathogenic bacterium finds optimal conditions for growth primarily in warm brackish waters. Places particularly vulnerable to these bacteria include shallow Baltic coastal waters where the proliferation of Vibrio strains increases in summer. The growing temperature of coastal waters boost this phenomenon, posing a serious threat to human health and the coastal Baltic tourism. The BaltVib project implemented by marine microbiologists investigates the impact of the so-called “system engineers”, e.g. mussels, macroalgae, and seagrass, on the diversity and abundance of vibriosis. The research should help to develop strategies to mitigate the problem of excessive populations of vibriosis through nature-based solutions. In addition to environmental and health issues, public awareness of the phenomena and future threats are equally important and these are also addressed in the project. The article presents results of a survey conducted on the Polish coast involving 140 respondents interviewed concerning their awareness of the increasing population of pathogenic vibriosis. The survey helped to diagnose how local residents perceive the threat to human health posed by Vibrio vulnificus now and in the future, as well as possible impacts these bacteria might have on economic use of the coastal waters. The survey also investigated the level of acceptance for various methods used to mitigate negative environmental changes.
