Opis:
Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a reaction between amorphous or poorly crystallized siliceous phase, present in aggregates, and sodium and potassium hydroxides in the pore solution of concrete. Chemical admixtures such as lithium compounds are known to have high potential of inhibiting ASR. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of lithium nitrate on ASR in mortars containing high reactive opal aggregate over a long period of time. Mortar bar expansion tests were performed and microstructures of mortar bars were observed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyser. Results from this study showed that effectiveness of lithium nitrate in mitigating ASR was limited over a long period of time. A larger amount of ASR gel which was formed in the presence of lithium nitrate indicated that the deterioration processes intensify within longer periods of time, which so far has not been observed in literature. Microscopic observation confirmed the presence of alkali-silica gel and delayed ettringite in mortars with lithium nitrate.

Opis:
The Zellidja Lead Smelter Company (Eastern Morocco) was created by Jean Walter in 1939 for the purpose of transforming lead concentrates into pure metal. Its activity was always at the origin of the production of huge quantities of solid mining waste with granular aspect. Today, despite the definitive cessation of its production in 2012 due to the depletion of ore, millions of tons of slag are piled up between the back of the foundry and the watercourse of Oued El Heimer. This open-air storage site represents a significant environmental and economic risk resulting from the surface water and groundwater pollution. In addition, as part of the strengthening of the Moroccan construction sector and infrastructure (which requires enormous quantities of natural aggregates), studying the possibilities of using these by-products as building materials seems interesting. For these reasons, the objective of our research work is the characterization of Zellidja slag for their valorization in civil engineering. This valorization has three objectives: to solve the problem of the landfill of the mining waste, to search for an alternative material responding to the increased needs for granular materials and to protect the national patrimony in raw material. In order to ensure the feasibility of this valorization, these tailings were the subject of a complete characterization. The results of this characterization prove that these by-products with a granular aspect have interesting geometric, physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics favoring their valorization in concrete.

The article presents a method of determining numerical relationships between defects occur-ring to some elements of the analyzed structures, expressing their maintenance conditions, and the magnitude of their technical degradation. Unmeasurable (qualitative) variables, i.e. individual defects with dichotomous values, and measurable variables (quantitative), i.e. the extent of technical wear of particular structures, were identified. An attempt to numerically express the correlation between them was made. In the calculation of the strength of this relationship, the method of determination of the point bi-serial correlation coefficient for different types of properties. The significance of this coefficient for a typologically selected, nonproba-bility sample was investigated. The results obtained for this sample were extrapolated to a uniform population of pre-war tenement houses in Wrocław.

Opis:
Mining dumps, particularly inactive or abandoned mines located near makeshift mining towns, have significant environmental and social impacts. The Touissit-Boubker lead mine, operated for years by the Touissit Mining Company (CMT) and abandoned without rehabilitation, is an example of this socio-economic and environmental collapse. Large quantities of harmful solid waste containing clayey aggregates rich in lead sulphide have been dumped in dykes on the edge of the village of Touissit. These mining wastes were rewashed to extract galena causing a depletion of lead sulphide. The objective of this study is to evaluate the possibility of using washed mining waste as sandy aggregate for the manufacture of masonry mortar. Cylindrical mortar tests, made with various proportions of sand and mine waste were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical analysis by uni-axial compressive strength after curing for 3, 14, 28 and 60 days. The results obtained revealed that the mining waste consists of dolomite, quartz and clay. The dehydration rate of the mortar specimens is strongly affected by the amount of the waste added and the grain size. The mechanical strength of the mortar specimens mostly depends on the grain-size of the aggregates than on the amount of mine waste added. The microstructure of the mortar did not change when sand was replaced by mine waste of the same grain size.

An investment project as an undertaking for the future, more or less foreseeable, is a priori encumbered with the possibility of occurrence of disturbances. In recent years there have appeared significant changes in the scope of execution of construction projects, connected with the investment execution time, manner of financing, investors, and the environment in which the given project is executed. That fact determines the need, or even the necessity, to conduct the research into the issues of risk assessment and its utilitarian aspects. That problem applies also to construction projects, including water supply and sewage projects. An example of the project with all kinds of threats characteristic of such types of investments is the project entitled “Complex protection of the underground waters in the Kielce agglomeration.” The risk factors result from the complexity and specificity of that type of projects. The presented article is an introduction to the discussion on the issues of assessing the risk of execution of water supply and sewage projects. The intention of the authors was to present the specificity of that type of projects and the general identification of the risk factors accompanying them.

Opis:
This study aimed to analyze perceptions of Iranian English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students on their computer literacy levels. A total of 641 undergraduate students of civil engineering and 34 EAP instructors participated in the study. Data collection instruments included questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings confirmed that the participants perceived Iranian EAP students’ computer literacy levels as low and insufficient for the efficient implementation of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in EAP instruction. The results of the study highlighted that computer literacy occupies a significant role in tertiary students’ academic and EAP achievement. It appeared that there are several constraints and barriers which would discourage EAP students from promoting their computer literacy and using computers for learning EAP. Furthermore, the study found evidence to support the view that there should be adequate computer literacy training programs for EAP students to facilitate the incorporation of computer technology in EAP instruction. The analysis of qualitative data provided insights into participants’ perceptions of several specific computer-based skills required for technology-enhanced EAP learning. Implications for the integration of technology and CALL in EAP instruction are provided.

This paper deals with an issue of a rotational motion impact on a construction and presents civil engineering applications of a fiber optic rotational seismograph named Fiber-Optic System for Rotational Events & Phenomena Monitoring. It has been designed for a long- term building monitoring and structural rotations’ recording. It is based on the Sagnac effect which enables to detect one-axis rotational motion in a direct way and without any reference system. It enables to detect a rotation component in the wide range of a signal amplitude from 10-8 rad/s to 10 rad/s, as well as a frequency from DC to 1000 Hz. Data presented in this paper show the behavior of a reinforced concrete frame construction on different floors. Several measurements were carried out by placing the applied sensor on different floor levels of a building. The laboratory and in-situ measurements confirmed that Fiber-Optic System for Rotational Events & Phenomena Monitoring is an accurate and suitable device for applications in civil engineering.

Opis:
Contemporary solutions in concrete technology are varied, and consist in e.g. the use of new generation concretes, including the most spectacular achievement of the 1990s – self-compacting concrete (SCC) being the subject of continuous research, as well as protection of the environment against excessive anthropogenic pressures, such as carbon dioxide which is a major emission substance from the cement industry. The studies analysed the possibilities for replacing part of the clinker binder (cement CEM I 42.5 R) in self-compacting concrete with three types of waste mineral additives: fly ash, limestone powder, and granite powder. Focus was placed on key technological characteristics of concrete mixes: air content and rheological properties, maximal diameter of slump-flow and changes thereof over time, as well as the mix’s flow time into the 500 mm diameter, determining the flow dynamics. 28-day compressive strength of the concrete was recognised as a secondary property which in self-compacting concretes results from achieving the right range of the mix’s rheological properties. Concretes were produced using gravel-sand aggregate in 3-fraction composition and a high-efficiency superplasticiser. The studies were conducted as a planned experiment in the 3-ingredient mixes plan.

Opis:
Finland launched a new Government Decree, the so-called MARA-regulation, on the utilization of certain wastes in earth construction on 1.1.2018. This statutory regulation sets limit values for the solubility of heavy metals (Sb, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Mo, Ni, Se, Zn, V, Hg), chloride, sulphate, fluoride and dissolved organic carbon, as well as for organic substance (petroleum hydrocarbons, benzene, naphthalene, TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene), PAH-, phenolic- and PCB-compounds). In this case study, the concentrations of these harmful substances in the used traction sand collected in the city of Kemi, Northern Finland, were lower than their limit values set in the MARA-regulation. Therefore, this residue is a potential material to be used at earth construction sites such as in roads and roadways, in field and embankment structures, as well as in floor structures of industrial or storage buildings. However, if the used traction sand is to be utilized for these kinds of civil engineering purposes, an environmental permit is still needed because this material is not yet included in the scope of the MARA-regulation. This paper also gives an overview of the relevant Finnish environmental legislation on the utilization of wastes as an earth construction material.

In this research project, the measurements of the ultrasonic P- and S-waves and seismic cone penetration testing (CPT) were applied to identify subsurface conditions and properties of clayey soil stabilized with lime/cement columns in the Stockholm Norvik Port, Sweden. Applied geophysical methods enabled to identify a connection between the resistance of soil and strength in the stabilized columns. The records of the seismic tests were obtained in the laboratory of Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) through estimated P- and S-wave velocities using techniques of resonance frequency measurement of the stabilized specimens. The CPT profiles were used to evaluate the quality of the lime/cement columns of the reinforced soil by the interpretation of signals. The relationship between the P- and S-waves demonstrated a gain in strength during soil hardening. The quality of soil was evaluated by seismic measurements with aim to achieve sufficient strength of foundations prior to the construction of the infrastructure objects and industrial works. Seismic CPT is an effective method essential to evaluate the correct placement of the CPT inside the column. This work demonstrated the alternative seismic methods supporting the up-hole technology of drilling techniques for practical purpose in civil engineering and geotechnical works.

Opis:
There is an increasing demand for mixed joints made of hard-weldable steels used in the construction of transport means. An illustration of this is the welding of movable platform elements such as a pin to arm joints. The pin is made of high-strength structural steel S690 QL (1.8928) while the arm of the movable platform is made of DOCOL 1200M steel from the AHSS group (Advanced High-Strength Steel). Such a joint is not easy to make due to the different chemical composition of both steels. The difference in thickness of welded elements creates an additional difficulty. The thickness of the cylindrical pin is 40 mm, whereas the thickness of the sheet metal used for the platform arm is much smaller and amounts to 2 mm. Joints of varying thickness and chemical composition tend to produce cracks in the heat-affected zone as well as in the weld. The purpose of this article is to determine the most appropriate welding parameters and the selection of additional materials to obtain correct joint with good mechanical properties, free of welding defects and incompatibilities.
