Opis:
Just as contemporary cartographic works, old maps were usually made for specific purposes, e.g. related to taxation, propaganda or military objectives. C. d’Örken’s map of Lublin of 1716 is an example of a cartographic work created for military purposes, as it was made in the context of negotiations of the Tarnogród Confederation. The author of the map focused on the thematic content – he marked control zones, as well as military outposts, and accommodation sites. In many instances, the base content is presented with little attention to detail. There are a few exceptions to this rule, with fortifications being the most noticeable one. It was most likely motivated by the author’s profession, as he was a military engineer. Still, although Lublin has never been a particularly well-fortified city, the aforementioned content of the map perfectly reflects not only the former shape of the city space, but also its contemporary organisation. This article, due to its detailed description of selected works and the methodology involving the use of old cartographic materials, can be used as an important source material for archaeological, restoration and regeneration works.

Opis:
The authors analyses the issues inherent in implementation of a multi-sensory mobile application which uses a map as an interface for an edutainment-style city guide for tourists. Two models – the triad of tourist experiences (3E), i.e. education, entertainment, and excitement, and the hierarchy of needs of Abraham Maslow – were used as the basis for identifying what conditions should be met by such an application to encourage its use by both local residents and tourists, in equal measure. It was decided that only open source software would be used to achieve the goal of the application.

Opis:
The authors’ main goal is to highlight the additional research potential of the method of analysing changes in the routes and names of streets introduced by Paweł E. Weszpiński in 2012. The proposed method was based on the old city maps of Warsaw and, according to Weszpiński, described “wandering streets and their names”. Taking the changing routes and names of streets on Lublin city maps from the last century as the research subject, the authors demonstrate that the method can be used to analyse how urban spaces are perceived and how they function in the minds of local residents. The authors propose to modify the method by adding one more important factor – the function of the place or street affected by the “wandering”. They claim that the study of changes in streets’ topography, territorial scope and names should be supplemented each time with an analysis of the administrative, economic or social significance of the place.

Nowadays, the transformations of metropolises into smart cities is a crucial factor in improving the living conditions of the inhabitants. The goal of the smart city concept is modern urban management using technical tools that offer state-of-the-art technologies, considering the applicable ecological standards while saving resources and achieving the expected results. The purpose of this article is to identify the areas of research analysed in the international literature in the field of smart cities. The bibliometric analysis was carried out to achieve the purpose. The analysis covered publications on smart cities published in Scopus and Web of Science databases from January 2009 to May 2019. Based on the bibliometric analysis, a bibliometric map was developed using the mapping technique VOS — the visualisation of similarities. Original clusters were created using the VOSviewer software. The bibliometric map visualises the results of the analysis that targeted the word coexistence.

Opis:
The Tranquility Rating coefficient (TR) is a tool proposed for assessing the quality of urban green areas, which considers both visual and acoustic aspects. This paper aims to verify how the proposed TR coefficient works for the assessment of the audiovisual quality of a typical urban space in a vicinity of an arterial road. Three different versions of the same urban space are considered: loud and visually unappealing (current state), quiet and visually unappealing (after considerable traffic reduction), and visually appealing and quiet (after redesigning). The values of noise levels required for the calculation of TR are taken from the noise maps based on the in-situ measurements, and the values of the percentage ratio of the features which are natural or man-made but contained within the visual scene (NCF) are taken from a survey conducted in the research. The results show that for the urban areas, even with very low noise levels, the TR is described as “unacceptable”. This may indicate the need for introducing an amendment for TR to be used in typical urban areas.

Opis:
Urban noise is a main component in the deterioration of life quality for people in urban areas. This problem mainly affects those who periodically travel through high traffic areas. The first step in reducing environmental noise is to characterize the urban setting with acoustic metrology for its diagnosis and control. This document exposes the design, construction and characterization of a wireless urban noise measurement module. The device works as a low-cost node with the capacity to be replicated for the deployment of a network of wireless acoustic sensors that allows the elaboration of dynamic urban noise maps. Each module consists of an electrical autonomy system, a single board computer and a MEMS microphone. The project also includes the design of a web portal to display measurement results in real time. The low-cost system was calibrated and compared with a class 1 sound level meter used to measure urban noise in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). Global differences of less than 1 dB were obtained. Urban noise was measured near the National University of Tres de Febrero following guidelines of ISO 1996-2 standard. The performance obtained in the evaluation instance and the results of the comparison were satisfactory.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a comparative study of the land system of the city square and adjacent buildings for Rzeszów in Poland. The study made use of a cadastral map at a scale of 1:2880 and a modern land and building record map. For the purpose of adjusting reference systems, the cadastral map recorded in the form of a digital raster image, in accordance with applicable provisions of polish law (Journal of Laws No. 263 §49), was subjected to a two-stage calibration. The first stage consisted in carrying out initial calibration with the employment of first-degree affine transformation. In the second stage, final calibration was performed using mathematical transformation that considered the distortions detected in the previous stage. The results showed shifts, consolidations, and divisions of land parcels with regard to the present state, and changes to property structure. The proposed method may prove useful for further research on historical urban system morphology, and on restoration and renewal of the urban tissue.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań porównawczych układu przestrzennego rynku miejskiego i zabudowy przyległej dla Rzeszowa w Polsce. W opracowaniu wykorzystano mapę ewidencyjną w skali 1:2880 oraz współczesną mapę ewidencyjną gruntów i budynków. W celu wyrównania układów odniesienia mapa ewidencyjna zarejestrowana w postaci cyfrowego obrazu rastrowego, zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami polskiego prawa - Dz.U.

The report brings a comprehensive summary of archaeological fieldwork and survey carried out in Berenike on the Red Sea coast of Egypt and in the Eastern Desert hinterland over the course of two seasons in 2014 and 2015. The completed magnetic map of the site is discussed in some detail, assessing the potential for future excavations. The report covers the most important discoveries of the two seasons, which include fragments of Middle Kingdom Pharaonic stelae, possibly pushing back the foundation of the harbor, archaeological evidence of a rock-cut watercollection system forming part of the Hellenistic-age fortifications and two inscribed stone bases, one of which records a secretary of an aromatics warehouse at Berenike, discovered undisturbed in the courtyard of the Great Temple of Berenike (also called the Serapis Temple). A previously unknown religious(?) complex was discovered on the western outskirts of the site thanks to work with Corona satellite imagery. In turn, analysis of the magnetic mapping of the city revealed an administrative(?) complex in the northern part of the town; the later, 5th and 6th century layers were examined inside a chamber with niche forming part of this complex. Work also continued in the early Roman harbor, uncovering among others a complete timber ship frame, and a collection of garnets in subsidiary buildings in the late Roman temenos located in the entrance to the southwestern bay.
