Opis:
Whose is the city? This question only superficially refers to the past when at least some cities were in fact law-making, autonomous communities of their citizens. Unlike in the past, the contemporary city is a random collection of individuals gathered in a space with no clear boundaries, who in their majority have a weak sense of identification with the place of their residence, whether longer or shorter. The residents of such a city are not citizens but merely users of space which has become a commodity. Taking Warsaw as an example, the paper shows the process of selling out the city space, which is driven by globalisation and metropolisation processes. The consequence of this is privatisation and fragmentation of space, leading to the evaporation of public space in the city.

Aim. The aim of the research is to study the symbolic capital of northern cities (semiotic potential) contained in "urban texts" and the influence of the historical memory of a multiethnic region on the political process of the region and the country as a whole, through a comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of the symbolic space of cities in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Methods. The study used the cognitive approach, the method of space-time analysis, and the method of historicism and questionnaire survey. Symbolic space as a text is a heterogeneous content. Results. The results of the study show the importance of a symbolic resource as a brand tool, first, depending on the political context and introduction into the collective memory through a constant "reminder" of its importance and significance in the socio-cultural and everyday life of citizens. The resulting databases of monuments served as the basis for compiling a virtual album of monuments and art objects in the cities of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The research results can practically be applied in the field of education, politics, culture, in the study and promotion of the cultural and historical heritage of the regions of Russia. Conclusions. The urgent problem is the task of preserving the accumulated experience and values, places of memory, relics of the past, as well as ideas about the past that are stored in the memory of its inhabitants and the transfer of this knowledge to the younger generation.

The paper is based on the author’s monograph (Śleszyński, 2008). It presents the analysis of enterprise headquarters’ locations in eight largest Polish cities (Warsaw, Szczecin, The Tricity [Gdańsk–Gdynia–Sopot], Poznań, Łódź, Wrocław, Katowice and Krakow). The study primarily involved data from the Hoppenstedt Bonnier database for the year 2004, concerning 3810 entities whose overall revenue exceeded the minimum of 15.6 million PLN. The businesses were analysed in terms of their location with respect to the city centre, as well as the differentiation of revenues, line of business and ownership structure. The analyses helped in the formulation of the basic regularities of the location distribution. For instance, it was found that spatial concentration is most significant in the case of the largest enterprises, the public sector and more advanced businesses, particularly high-order services.The location of large company headquarters, as well as their mutual connections, performs one of the key roles (or even the most important one) in the development of Central Business Districts in Polish cities during transformation.

The fundamental differences between the suburbs and the city centre that I would like to point out concern the pace of life and the intensity of urban development. Certainly, these differences are not absolute but are rather relative, as they are defined in relation to the surrounding neighbourhood that serves as a reference for self-determination. A suburb has some small‑ ‑town traits, but its close location to the city prevents it from becoming a local centre. The same concerns the architecture whose intensity is, after all, a consequence of the increasing intensity in other aspects of life, the differentiation of sources of people’s income, the demand for services, trade contacts, etc. Its incompleteness, imperfection, slower pace and focus on an unattained and unattainable ideal can make one see in the suburb as a theoretically extremely promising area. Indeed, its promise lies in this aspect of failure, incompleteness and fragmentation — which is long lasting and relatively permanent. Many traits of suburban architecture are conservative; whereas others, such as its impermanence and improvisational qualities, are experimental and are characterised by an almost guerrilla ‑like aspect. However, present day advanced postmodern thinking at times achieves an ability to take contradictory spatial, visual, artistic and functional characteristics and, through a theoretical analysis, make them into a complex ‘difficult whole’. Here, the combination itself is probably not so much harmonious but rather contains certain internal tensions, imbalances and longings of one opposite towards another. Anyway, this combination does take place and — in line with the direction of many diagnoses of contemporaneity — instead of creating abstract constructs, we must register the facts and try to conceptualise them.

This article is inspired by the research on membrane training platforms, which has been conducted by the author for over two years. Currently, they are at the stage of building an experimental prototype in a real scale. These studies are the result of cooperation between the Wrocław University of Technology and the Center "Lunares Space - simulated space base" in Piła and the cooperation with the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław regarding training devices. The membrane training platform is a spatial membrane, mesh, rope or belt installation, stretched elastically on a light and economical, spatial rod structure. A membrane is understood as a bi-curved surface, which is an unstable substrate, generating significant deformations under a load from a human walking on it - simulating walking "in deep snow" or in conditions of reduced gravity. The author's experience, gained in the course of this scientific work, gave him the idea of applying a similar idea to health-promoting urban installations intended for children and adolescents. The author presents this concept against the background of currently known devices with a similar function and character. At the same time, he shows arguments in favor of the implementation of this unconventional proposal, justifying in detail the need to develop this type of activity for children and adolescents, and even for the elderly. The presented proposals for new functional and spatial forms, intended for location in open space, are based on the use of low-cost, single-layer, octagonal and hexagonal bar systems, designed in such a way as to form closed systems, well absorbing forces from polypropylene nets, tapes or membranes stretched inside. According to the author, apart from their functional tasks, these objects could create intriguing, attractive architectural forms, enriching the city space.
Inspiracją niniejszego artykułu są prowadzone przez autora od ponad dwóch lat badania nad membranowymi platformami treningowymi. Aktualnie znajdują się one w stadium budowy doświadczalnego prototypu w skali rzeczywistej. Badania te są rezultatem współpracy Politechniki Wrocławskiej z Centrum „Lunares Space - symulowana baza kosmiczna” w Pile oraz współpracy z Akademią Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu w zakresie urządzeń treningowych. Membranowa platforma treningowa jest przestrzenną instalacją membranową, siatkową, linową lub taśmową, rozpiętą sprężyście na ekonomicznym, przestrzennym stelażu prętowym. Pod pojęciem membrany rozumie się powierzchnię dwukrzywiznową, która stanowi niestabilne podłoże generujące znaczne deformacje pod obciążeniem od chodzącego po niej człowieka – symulujące chodzenie „w głębokim śniegu” czy w warunkach zmniejszonej grawitacji. Doświadczenia autora, zdobyte w trakcie tej pracy naukowej, nasunęły mu koncepcję zastosowania podobnej idei dla prozdrowotnych instalacji miejskich przeznaczonych dla dzieci i młodzieży. Autor przedstawia tę koncepcję na tle znanych obecnie urządzeń, o podobnej funkcji oraz charakterze. Wykazuje równocześnie argumenty przemawiające za sensem realizacji tej niekonwencjonalnej propozycji, szczegółowo uzasadniając potrzeby rozwijania tego typu aktywności u dzieci i młodzieży, a nawet u osób starszych. Prezentowane propozycje nowych form funkcjonalno-przestrzennych przeznaczonych do lokalizacji w otwartej przestrzeni oparte są o wykorzystanie niskobudżetowych, jednopowłokowych systemów prętowych – oktagonalnych i heksagonalnych - projektowanych w taki sposób, by tworzyły systemy zamknięte dobrze przejmujące siły z rozpiętych wewnątrz siatek, taśm lub membran polipropylenowych. Zdaniem autora oprócz swych zadań użytkowych obiekty te mogłyby tworzyć intrygujące, atrakcyjne formy architektoniczne wzbogacające przestrzeń miasta.

Intensive development of the Upper Silesian region in recent years has resulted in the official establishment of the first urban organism in 2017 - the metropolis. The Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis is a diverse region which currently covers 41 communes. The subject of this paper, however, is not so much a description of differences as an attempt to capture the pace and course of revitalisation taking place in cities selected for analysis, in order to answer the question of how they affect the development of those cities and whether the fact that they belong to the same urban organism, which is the metropolis, determines their relatively balanced development. The following cities have become the subject of the comparative sociological-economic analysis in the selected area: Katowice, Zabrze, Tarnowskie Góry, Bytom and Ruda Śląska.

The structural transformation of the Habermasian public sphere from the salons to the streets is directly related to understanding the boundaries of the city and the dynamics among its inhabitants today. The process of “transnationalization” via the mass media results in further “deterritorialization”, which brings with it the ambivalence of locality and universality within the same city. As the “counter-publics” continue to lack material means to rational-critical debate in envisioning the links between the city and its inhabitants, questions remain on what institutional arrangements can best facilitate participatory parity among the citizens. Joanna Rajkowska’s Minaret (2009-2011) bears a critical relationship to the city of Poznań as a site of play upon heritage, time-space relations, as well as religion. Who is the city really for – the inhabitant, the investor… the artist? Following Lefebvre’s definition and work conducted by such organizations as the UN-Habitat (2005), “the right to the city” suggests that all urban dwellers are equal participants. Does Rajkowska’s Minaret employ the best means that can ignite counter-public mobilization for Muslim minorities in Poznań, or does it simply make itself a victim to the postmodern Other?
Strukturalna transformacja Habermasowskiej sfery publicznej z salonów na ulice jest bezpośrednio związana ze zrozumieniem granic miasta i dynamiki zachodzącej pomiędzy jego mieszkańcami. Proces „transnacjonalizacji” poprzez mass media skutkuje dalszą „deterytorializacją”, która niesie ze sobą ambiwalencję jednoczesnej lokalności i uniwersalności w ramach jednego miasta. Ponieważ „kontr-publiczności” (counter-publics) nadal nie dysponują środkami materialnymi umożliwiającymi racjonalną i krytyczną debatę dotyczącą wizji łączących miasto i jego mieszkańców, pozostaje pytanie, jakie rozwiązania instytucjonalne mogą najsprawniej ułatwić zapewnienie mieszkańcom równego dostępu do uczestnictwa. W Minarecie Joanny Rajkowskiej (2009-2011) widać silne związki z Poznaniem jako miejscem gry dziedzictwem historycznym, relacjami czasu i przestrzeni, a także religią. Dla kogo jest miasto: dla mieszkańca, dla inwestora, czy… dla artysty? W myśl definicji Lefebre’a oraz działań podejmowanych przez takie organizacje, jak UN-Habitat (2005), „prawo do miasta” oznacza, że wszyscy mieszkańcy miasta są jego uczestnikami w równym stopniu. Czy Minaret Rajkowskiej używa najlepszych środków, które mogą zainicjować kontr-publiczną mobilizację mniejszości muzułmańskich w Poznaniu, czy też po prostu staje się ofiarą postmodernistycznego Innego?

The main goal of the article is to show the possibility and necessity of thinking of urban space in the political perspective. In order to do that, I present set of tools elaborated by David Harvey in his text “Space as a Key Word”. They can be used to analyze different types of space – particularly urban space – in an orderly way. I then use those tools to examine one type of urban space, which is the “scattered city”. This example and its critique allow me to link scattered cities with a certain type of politics. In the next step I show a selected range of political problems, questions, and convictions connected with urban space.

Cultural space revitalisation is a specific kind of city centre renewal. It especially aims atimproving a degradad urban structure in the aspect of spatial and social attractiveness. In the paper, the author deals with questions of directing a city centre revitalisation process in the right way. In author’s opinion it is needed to prove the necessity of the search for solutions to the current spatial problems within a city centre simultaneously considering some extra questions. Having reached the proper level of social and economic stabilization, other kinds of problems will be addressed subsequently. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the future right now, and programme long-term and interdisciplinary strategies for the city downtown development. In conlusion, it is essential to provide the right spatial politics to stimulate the realization of a compact city idea.

The article explores social relations between festivals, consumption, and urban spaces. The study deals with two city festivals, Sea Festival and International Short Film Festival Tinklai, in post-Soviet city Klaipeda, Lithuania, over the period of 1991–2010, and impact of consumption on the geography of festivals’ locations within the city. We argue that modern festivals gradually move to those urban spaces which lost their functionality and can be easily transformed into temporary places of controlled consumption. Festivals set urban spaces for new sociality of emotional community, while physical arrangements of festival territories reproduce more general patterns of social distinctions and hierarchies. Methodological assumptions of the study come from Bourdieu’s typology of taste, De Certeau’s idea of urban space signification practices, and H. Lefebvre’s theory of urban space production.
