Opis:
The presence of sidewalks is very important to support the safety, comfortability, and activities of pedestrians in CBD (Central Business District). Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the service quality of the pedestrian lanes in two CBDs of Banda Aceh City using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method. The results showed most of the service quality variables of the sidewalks are in quadrant A (concentrate here), followed by C (low priority), D (possible over-skill), and B (keep up the good work). This means the qualities of the sidewalk services need to be improved to ensure their performances are in line with pedestrians’ expectations. This is necessary because most of the width and height of these sidewalks were found through field investigation not to meet government standards, whereas several obstacles were also discovered such as the presence of traders, merchandises, and parked vehicles, as well as the lack of seating facilities and disability lanes. These violations are part of the problems in many cities of Indonesia and other developing countries and are due to the lack of public awareness and supervision by the authorities. Therefore, further improvement is recommended to realize the expected pedestrian path.

In this article, Control charts are employed to analyse the strength quality control of ready-mixed concrete for rigid pavement. The results of the study support that CUSUM statistical analysis is more sensitive than the Shewhart control chart. The CUSUM chart can detect the continual changes in the concrete quality in a more accurate way. By combining the CUSUM control chart and the Shewhart control chart, higher accuracy of quality control analysis could be achieved, in order words, for quality control performance when in built/pouring the ready-mix concrete as rigid pavement.

The average fire gas temperature of multiple fires in a mine drift with longitudinal ventilation is investigated. The output of a quasi-steady model is investigated and compared with experimental results from model scale fire experiments. During the analysis it was found that the calculated average fire gas temperature of the model correlates quite well with the measured temperature, except for the period when the fire closest to the measuring point reached a peak of heat release rate. This poor correlation is likely due to flame impingement as the distance to the nearest fire decreases. Uncertainty of the calculations is caused by the fire gas temperature at the site of each individual fire and further studies into the fire growth rate and maximum heat release rates of multiple fires are recommended in order to remedy this uncertainty. When calculating the average fire gas temperature, a key parameter is determined with respect to the smoke spread in a mine drift as well as the risk of fire spread.

In recent years, the disposal of sewage sludge has been a major concern worldwide because of their potential treat in relation with the contamination of ground water and food chain. Furthermore, their poor mechanical properties don’t allow a possible direct use in civil engineering applications. For these reasons, it was important to explore more opportunity to reuse this by-product of sewage treatment. In this frame, the solidification-stabilisation technique (S-S) which is based on hydraulic binders can improve the properties of sewage sludge so that it can be used in civil engineering application, especially in road pavements. In this context, this paper investigates the possibility of using the solidified sludge in road construction. To achieve this goal, an experimental protocol was conducted using a several combined binders: combination of Cement/Limestone filler and Cement/Lime, with different amounts in the target to fix the optimal mixtures amount. Several tests were conducted to characterise the mechanical and geotechnical properties of the solidified sludge. The results indicate that the solidified sludge using a combined mixture of cement and lime allows a possible use as base and sub-base layer.

The throttle effect is a phenomenon, which may occur during a fire underground, causing unforeseen smoke spread. This paper focuses on the modelling of the throttle effect in a mine drift, using a CFD software. The aim of the paper is to investigate whether the CFD tool is able to predict and reproduce the throttle effect for fire scenarios underground. Experimental data from fire experiments in a model-scale mine drift and modelling results from a CFD model were used during the analysis. It was found that the CFD model was not able to fully reproduce the throttle effect for fire scenarios in a mine drift. The inability was due to the under prediction of the fire gas temperature at the ceiling level and the over prediction of the temperatures at the lower levels. The difficulties occurred foremost during transient periods with high fire growth rates. Given the difficulties in modelling the thermal stratification and the throttle effect, the use of CFD models should be mainly for qualitative analysis. Qualitative analysis could possibly be performed for non-transient and low intensity fires.

Pervious concrete a sustainable solution with limited fines or no fines and interconnected voids, has many environmental benefits, such as reducing the stormwater run-off, improving the groundwater table, reducing water pollution, and mitigating urban heat island. Many research works have been done in Pervious Concrete (PC) by varying different parameters such as, types of aggregate, aggregate gradation, water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, cement-to-aggregate ratio, geopolymer binder, ultra-high strength Matrix and compaction techniques. All these parameters have direct influences on the strength, porosity, permeability, hydraulic efficiency and durability characteristics of PC. The main aim of this paper is to review the recent work carried out in pervious concrete under six different categories (i) Effect of binders, coarse aggregate, admixtures and fibers used in PC (ii) Mechanical and durability properties (iii) pore structure characteristics (iv) Study on Clogging Effect (v) Role of PC in the water purification process and (vi) Numerical model in PC.

Opis:
The paper presents the defects that are typically found in structural timber. The model of the so-called flawless timber has been made more precise. Additionally, the impact of defects on timber quality was characterised. Defect classification with respect to the time of formation, type and causes was presented. The following defects were discussed in a detailed manner: knots, twisted fibres, cracks, resin pockets, stains, rots, insect channels, wanes, shape defects and sclerenchyma fibres. The main objective of the paper is to show actual imperfections in the conifer wood revealed in the examined elements. The cross-sections of round timber and construction and structural sawn timber were analysed.
W artykule przedstawiono typowe wady drewna konstrukcyjnego. Przybliżone zostały wzorce tzw. drewna bezbłędnego. Scharakteryzowano również wpływ wad na jakość drewna oraz ich podział w odniesieniu do czasu powstania, rodzaju uszkodzeń i ich przyczyn. Szczegółowo zilustrowano sęki, skręt włókien, pęknięcia, pęcherze żywiczne, zabarwienia, zgnilizny, chodniki owadzie, obliny, wady kształtu oraz twardzicę. Głównym celem pracy jest ukazanie rzeczywistych niedoskonałości przebadanych elementów z drewna iglastego. Przeanalizowano przekroje drewna okrągłego oraz tarcicy budowlano-konstrukcyjnej.
