Opis:
Edible mushrooms have been appreciated globally for their organoleptic, nutritional and chemical properties. In the present study, fruiting body of Calocybe gambosa, wild growing in Serbia, has been chemically characterized (content of macronutrients, soluble sugars, tocopherols, fatty and organic acids) and its bioactive (antimicrobial and antioxidant) properties were evaluated. The results obtained suggest that this mushroom is a source of carbohydrates and proteins (72 g/100 g dry weight (dw) and 16 g/100 g dw, respectively), with a low fat content (1.5 g/100 g dw). Sugar analysis revealed the presence of trehalose (3.82 g/100 g dw) and mannitol (0.22 g/100 g dw). Tocopherol composition revealed the presence of α-tocopherol (7.8 μg/100 g dw), while fatty acid analysis revealed the presence of 24 fatty acids with the prevalence of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Amongst organic acids, oxalic, quinic, malic, citric and fumaric acid were detected (2.8 g/100 g dw, 1.45 g/100 g dw, 11.3 g/100 g dw, 1.3 g/100 g dw, 0.08 g/100 g dw, respectively). Comprehensive antioxidant activity analysis (reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging activity, β-carotene/linoleate and TBARS assays) indicate that the mushroom is a perspective antioxidant source, whereas its antimicrobial potential turned out to be moderate. Nevertheless, at a sub-inhibitory level, the methanolic extract disrupted cell-to-cell communication using Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 as a model system. Finally, enrichment of oatmeal cookies with C. gambosa flakes not only improved their nutritional value, but was praised among the participants in sensory evaluation test, indicating that along with results of chemical composition and biological activity, this mushroom has a potential to be regarded as functional food.

Clay is widely used in a number of industries due to its special properties like fine particle size, brightness and whiteness, chemical inertness, platy structure, etc. In this study, the general characteristics of clays have been investigated by XRF, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA and SEM. The presence of iron as an impurity decreases its commercial value due to giving unwanted colors to clay mineral. Therefore, the dissolution capacity of clay ore was investigated by oxalic acid leaching. Under optimized leaching conditions (0.8 M oxalic acid concentration, 85°C reaction temperature, 1.75 ambient pH, 106+75 µm particle size, 15% w/v solids concentration and 150 min. leaching time) with 250 rpm stirring, 83.90% of $Fe_2O_3$ was removed. The amount of iron oxide, the main impurity in the clay, has been reduced from 2.70 to 0.40%. The iron dissolution kinetics was mainly controlled by internal diffusion control of shrinking core model and activation energy, $E_a$, of 26.29 kJ/mol was obtained for the process. The results also showed that the studied clays have adequate characteristics for ceramics industry, earthenware and porcelain production.

The present study investigates the synthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3 O4 -NPs) for their antibacterial potential against Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella pneumonia by modified disc diffusion and broth agar dilution methods. DLS and XRD results revealed the average size of synthesized Fe3 O4 -NPs as 24 nm while XPS measurement exhibited the spin-orbit peak of Fe 2p3/2 binding energy at 511 eV. Fe3 O4 -NPs inhibited the growth of K. pneumoniae and B. cereus in both liquid and soild agar media, and displayed 26 mm and 22 mm zone of inhibitions, respectively. MIC of Fe3 O4 -NPs was found to be 5 μg/mL against these strains. However, MBC for these strains was observed at 40 μg/mL concentration of Fe3 O4 -NPs for exhibiting 40–50% loss in viable bacterial cells and 80 μg/mL concentration of Fe3 O4 -NPs acted as bactericidal for causing 90–99% loss in viability. Hence, these nanoparticles can be explored for their additional antimicrobial and biomedical applications.

The article analyses the water quality of the Lower Cretaceous aquifer in the Beni-Ounif syncline. To this end, 42 samples were taken for physico-chemical analysis and 28 for microbiological analysis in March, May and October 2017 from 14 sampling points. The results of physico-chemical analysis were processed by multi-variety statistical analysis methods: principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) coupled to hydro chemical methods: Piper diagram. The PCA allowed us to explore the connections between physico-chemical parameters and similarities between samples and to identify the most appropriate physico-chemical elements to describe water quality. The HCA allowed us to classify the sampling points according to the similarity between them and thus reduce them for the next follow-up analysis. Waters of the syncline are characterized by medium to low mineralization (320 < EC < 7600 μS∙cm–1 and 200 < RS < 4020 mg∙dm–3) and hardness of between 22 and 123°f. Only 19% of the samples show NO3 concentrations exceeding the Algerian standards. Microbiologically, the study reports the presence of bacteria: coliforms (<8 CFU∙0.1 dm–3), Streptococcus D (<1100 CFU∙0.1 dm–3), Clostridium sulphito-reducer of vegetative form (<90 CFU∙0.02 dm–3) and sporulate (<4 CFU∙0.02 dm–3), total aerobic mesophilic flora at 22°C (<462 CFU∙0.001 dm–3) and at 37°C (<403 CFU∙0.001 dm–3). It must be noted that no presence of thermo-tolerant coliforms is observed.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy jakości wody z poziomu wodonośnego dolnej kredy w synklinie Beni-Ounif. W tym celu pobrano 42 próbki wody do analiz fizycznych i chemicznych oraz 28 próbek do analiz mikrobiologicznych z 14 stanowisk w marcu, maju i październiku 2017 r. Wyniki analiz fizycznych i chemicznych przetworzono za pomocą wieloczynnikowych metod statystycznych: analizy czynników głównych (PCA) i hierarchicznej analizy skupień (HCA) połączonej z metodami hydrochemicznymi, z diagramem Pipera. Analiza PCA umożliwiła zbadanie powiązań między parametrami fizycznymi i chemicznymi oraz podobieństwa między próbkami, a także identyfikację parametrów najbardziej odpowiednich do opisu jakości wody. Wykorzystując HCA, sklasyfikowano stanowiska według ich wzajemnego podobieństwa oraz zredukowano ich liczbę do przyszłych analiz. Wody synkliny charakteryzowały się małą do średniej mineralizacją (320 < EC < 7600 μS∙cm–1 i 200 < RS < 4020 mg∙dm–3) i twardością między 22 i 123°f. Tylko 19% próbek wykazywało stężenie azotanów przekraczające algierskie normy. W badanych wodach stwierdzono obecność bakterii z grupy Coli (<8 jtk∙(0,1 dm3)–1), Streptococcus D (<1100 jtk∙(0,1 dm3)–1), wegetatywnych form (<90 jtk∙(0,02 dm3)–1) i przetrwalników (<4 jtk∙(0,02 dm3)–1) Clostridium oraz całkowitej mezofilnej flory aerobowej w temperaturze 22°C (<462 jtk∙(0,001 dm3)–1) i 37°C (<403 jtk∙(0,001 dm3)–1). Należy dodać, że nie stwierdzono obecności termoodpornych bakterii z grupy Coli.

This study was carried out to determine the characterization of brown coir fiber which is used as a potential reinforcement in polymer composites. The fiber is extracted from the husk of the coconut seeds which are collected in Sri Lanka. Anyhow the above-mentioned characterization can hardly be seen when it comes to the Sri Lankan context. Since the evaluation of their physical, mechanical, and chemical properties are significant before commencing the material development process and applications for this fiber. Several testing were carried out to evaluate the above-mentioned properties. There, the functional groups of coir fiber were obtained by Fourier Transform Infrared analysis and Crystallinity Index and Crystallite size were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface morphology and cross-sectional features were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy. The thermo-gravimetric method was adopted to study the thermal stability of coir fiber. The density and diameter of coir fiber were measured utilizing pychometric method and optical microscope respectively. Tensile strength was measured using an electronic tensometer and then find out the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation at breaking point. The average density of brown coir fibers was 1.018 g/cm3 and average diameters were 0.30 mm. The Crystallinity Index and the crystal-line size were 37.28% and 0.4331 nm respectively. Ultimate tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and Elongation of the coir fiber were ranging from 94–159 MPa, 1.2–1.8 GPa, and 21–67%, respectively.
