Opis:
The presented work discuss the influence of various types of graphite additions on the abrasive wear of AlMg10 matrix alloy composites. Flake graphite, electrographite, and short graphite fibre were used as a composite reinforcement. Composites containing 10 vol. % of graphite particles were produced by mechanical mixing of the liquid alloy with simultaneous introduction of the reinforcement. Composite suspensions were gravity cast into metal moulds. The achieved castings were tested for the abrasive wear. Also the pure matrix alloy was examined. Microphotographs of the produced materials were taken, the specimens were also examined after the abrasion test by observing the microsections perpendicular to the abraded surface. The carried out experiments allow to state that even the little addition of graphite influences beneficially the tribological properties of composite under small loads applied to the frictional pair. It was found that under the increased load (30 N) the least abrasive wear is exhibited by the composite reinforced with graphite fibre, the largest one occurring for the composite reinforced with electrographite. The composite reinforced with electrographite, however, exhibited the mass loss less by 25% than the pure matrix alloy.

Opis:
The Department of Marine Materials Engineering, Maritime University of Szczecin, has conducted research on the technology of metallic composites, focusing on composite aluminium foams stabilized with ceramic particles. One technology which enables efficient, inexpensive and diversified - in terms of foam structure - control of foam properties is the foundry technology consisting in gas injection into liquid metal. This method requires precise control of the process parameters, especially regarding temperature stabilization, as well as precise injection of the gas into the metal. The process of foaming of liquid aluminium or its silicon alloys can also be conducted using ceramic particles. This is a metallic-ceramic composite foaming process (patent PL 211439 B1). The paper presents the process of structure forming of metallic-ceramic foams.
W Zakładzie Inżynierii Materiałów Okrętowych Akademii Morskiej w Szczecinie prowadzono badania nad technologią kompozytów metalowych, a w szczególności kompozytowych pian aluminiowych stabilizowanych cząstkami ceramicznymi. Metoda ta wymaga precyzyjnego sterowania parametrami procesu, zwłaszcza w zakresie utrzymania i stabilizacji temperatury, a także precyzyjnego wprowadzania gazu do metalu.

Opis:
Wear resistance of TiC-ZrO2-Fe locally reinforced steel casting has been investigated. Composites were obtained by introducing to mould cavity compact with TiC reaction substrates, ZrO2 particles and addition of moderator. Casting with local reinforcement – composite zone was obtained. Structure and microstructure of composite zone were investigated with use of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) methods. The Miller slurry machine and Ball-on-Disc tester were used to determine wear resistance of the fabricated locally reinforced TiC-ZrO2-Fe composites. The worn surface of specimens after test, was studied by SEM. Due to the presence of TiC and ZrO2 particles in composite zone steel castings exhibited higher abrasion resistance than chromium white cast iron with Ni addition Ni-Hard 1 type and comparable with composites with high TiC content.

Opis:
Diode laser surface alloying process was used to the in-situ synthesis of TiC-reinforced composite surface layers on the ductile cast iron substrate. The obtained composite surface layers were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy, and XRD diffraction. It was found that the morphology and fraction of TiC phase is directly dependent upon both the concentration of titanium in the molten pool and also the solidification rate. With increasing titanium content, the fraction of TiC increases, whereas the fraction of cementite decreases. The TiC phase promotes a heterogeneous nucleation of primary austenite grains, what reduces a tendency of cracking in the alloyed layers.

The paper presents a detailed description of the process of creation of a surface alloy layer (using high-carbon ferrochromium) on the cast steel casting. The mechanism of the surface alloy layer is based on the known theories [5,6]. The proposed course of formation of the layers has been extended to decarburization stage of steel. The research included proving the presence of carbon-lean zone. The experiment included the analysis of the distribution of elements and microhardness measurement.

Opis:
Alloys based on FeAl intermetallic phases have a heat and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. With the addition of carbon in alloy the carbides appear which makes cast highly resistant to abrasion. However, this material is not widely used because of the presence in the microstructure of the aluminum carbide, which makes the casting disintegrates after a time automatically. The solution to the problem is the decomposition of aluminum carbide and replace it with another carbide forming element. In paper shows that the corresponding elements are titanium, vanadium, bismuth and boron effectively inhibit the process of self-destruction.

Opis:
Preliminary tests aimed at obtaining a cellular SiC/iron alloy composite with a spatial structure of mutually intersecting skeletons, using a porous ceramic preform have been conducted. The possibility of obtaining such a composite joint using a SiC material with an oxynitride bonding and grey cast iron with flake graphite has been confirmed. Porous ceramic preforms were made by pouring the gelling ceramic suspension over a foamed polymer base which was next fired. The obtained samples of materials were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic observations as well as investigations into the chemical composition in microareas. It was found that the minimum width of a channel in the preform, which in the case of pressureless infiltration enables molten cast iron penetration, ranges from 0.10 to 0.17 mm. It was also found that the ceramic material applied was characterized by good metal wettability. The ceramics/metal contact area always has a transition zone (when the channel width is big enough), where mixing of the components of both composite elements takes place.

Opis:
In this paper examinations of high-temperature wetting tests of 3 systems of liquid alloy – cast iron in contact with ceramic materials: magnesia ceramics in combination with natural graphite were presented. After wettability testing, the microscopic observations of the morphology of the sample surface and the cross-section microstructure with the chemical composition in micro-areas were examined. One of the objective of this work was also to verify whether the graphite content would affect the wettability of the magnesia ceramics. The study of high-temperature wetting kinetics of the liquid alloy in contact with the ceramic material, by the "sessile drop" method with capillary purification (CP) procedure was conducted. Under the test conditions, at a temperature of 1450°C and time 15 minutes, all 3 experimental systems showed a non-wetting behaviour. The average contact angle for the system with cast iron drop on magnesia ceramics was 140°, on magnesia ceramics with 10 parts per weight of graphite was 137° and on magnesia ceramics with 30 parts per weight of graphite - 139°. Microscopic observations revealed that in the case of the sample consisting of the cast iron drop on the substrate with magnesia ceramics, the formation of fine separations was not observed, unlike the systems with the substrate with magnesia ceramics and the addition of natural graphite. Numerous, fine droplets accumulate on the graphite flakes and consist mainly of Si as well as Fe and O. On the other hand, the rough MgO grains have a gray, matt surface, without fine separations. The conducted observations indicate the mechanical nature of the bonding - liquid metal penetrates into the pores of the rough ceramics of the substrate. However, in the case of systems of cast iron drop with magnesia ceramics and addition of graphite, probably the adhesive connection and the physical attraction of elements derived from cast iron drop with the flake graphite appeared as well.

Opis:
Wear resistance of TiC-cast steel metal matrix composite has been investigated. Composites were obtained with SHSB method known as SHS synthesis during casting. It has been shown the differences in wear between composite and base cast steel. The Miller slurry machine test were used to determine wear loss of the specimens. The slurry was composed of SiC and water. The worn surface of specimens after test, were studied by SEM. Experimental observation has shown that surface of composite zone is not homogenous and consist the matrix lakes. Microscopic observations revealed the long grooves with SiC particles indented in the base alloy area, and spalling pits in the composite area. Due to the presence of TiC carbides on composite layer, specimens with TiC reinforced cast steel exhibited higher abrasion resistance. The wear of TiC reinforced cast steel mechanism was initially by wearing of soft matrix and in second stage by polishing and spalling of TiC. Summary weight loss after 16hr test was 0,14÷0,23 g for composite specimens and 0,90 g for base steel.
