Opis:
Regenerative braking is a technique that employs electric motors to convert the dynamic mechanical energy from the motor’s spinning rotor and any attached loads into electricity. However, such a type of regenerative braking can only slow but not stop the vehicle because there is too little energy to excite the motor acting as a generator at low speeds. Therefore, this paper presents a unique flywheel-based regenerative braking system for railway vehicles. This system is supposed to meet high safety and comfort expectations in all operating conditions. The braking action control of this system should allow braking of empty or loaded vehicles according to load, the anti-blockage braking action of wheels and prevent wheel-slide during braking or wheel slip during acceleration. The new regenerative braking system under development, like any kinetic energy recovery system, requires the application of continuously variable transmission. The essence of the new solution is to design and build this type of variable transmission using only one planetary gear controlled through the powertrain control module for an electric motor cooperating concurrently. This paper describes complete modelling and simulation realisation on a closed-loop servomotor drive, which cooperates with the variable transmission of the regenerative braking system based on the Scilab/Xcos environment.

Opis:
The temperature of a brake friction surface influences significantly the braking effectiveness. The paper describes a heat transfer process in car brakes. Using a developed program of finite element method, the temperature distributions in brake rotors (disc and drum brake) of a light truck have been calculated. As a preliminary consistency criterion of the brake thermal state in road and roll-stand braking conditions, a balance of the energy cumulated in the brake rotor has been taken into account. As the most reliable consistency criterion an equality of average temperatures of the friction surface has been assumed. The presented method allows to achieve on a roll-stand the analogical thermal states of automotive brakes, which are observed during braking in road conditions. Basing on this method, it is possible to calculate the braking time and force for a high-speed roll-stand. In contrast to the previous papers of the author, new calculation results have been presented.
Temperatura powierzchni ciernej hamulca w istotny sposób wpływa na skuteczność hamowania. Artykuł opisuje proces wymiany ciepła w hamulcach samochodowych. Stosując opracowany program metody elementów skończonych, wyznaczono rozkłady temperatur w wirnikach hamulców (tarczy i bębna) lekkiego samochodu dostawczego.

This article presents selected issues related to the design methodology of the electric brakes during the construction process as well as other factors which are important in the design process. It is a very important issue due to affect on the airplane and automotive brake design. Nowadays when new solution of brakes is being designed there is a need to take into account various factors influencing the design such as: weight, compatibility and flexibility of use in various aircraft, reliability and durability, ease of installation and maintenance, low-cost operation and low cost components, braking efficiency, short braking distance. All of these factors are taken into account when designing a prototype of the electric brake as well as economical factor of the design. It is also necessary to verify the design during its creation using experimental and laboratory test data from other similar designs. The aim of the paper is to discuss design process from the very beginning (i.e. by comparing features of the electric brakes with other types of brakes in order to show advantages and disadvantages of chosen solution) to the creation of a working demonstrator in future. Author of the paper in his electric brake design bases on the experience of the Warsaw’s Institute of Aviation Landing Gear Department.

Opis:
Braking system is one of the key components influencing passenger safety. Today, a design process of brakes is usually experience - driven, based on brake manufactures know - how. Using this approach, it is fairly difficult predict the brake components exact working condition or durability - parameters still more often required in a modern design process, what results in a rising demand for an exact simulation of a braking process. This paper presents numerical analyses of a drum brake. Both static and dynamic FE analyses were conducted in order to verify behaviour of numerical procedures affecting the braking process. The phenomena of heat generation by friction forces and the influence of a wear pattern was emphasized during dynamic calculations, while static analyses were focused on sensitivity to thermal properties of materials. FE models, including loads and boundary conditions, are described in details. Some of the data used during the simulation were taken from experiments. These laboratory tests are also briefly described in the paper. Based on the obtained results, it is shown that a numerical procedure converting sliding energy coming from friction to heat used in a coupled mechanical - thermal dynamic calculation works properly, but is very sensitive to material thermal properties. Proper FE modelling of the contact area and contact forces is also crucial. Unfortunately, due to lack of real material data, the presented results have quantitive character only.

Opis:
Heavy-duty, oil-cooled brake discs (MMOTs) are often used in heavy-duty brake systems manufactured by companies such as Caterpilar, Clark, Komatsu and Liebherr. These discs are usually made of special steels, and in most cases, the flatness of the working surfaces should not exceed 0.15–0.30 mm. Although the technological processes of friction disc production include several stages of heat treatment and grinding, the required accuracy is not achieved in some cases. In addition, the remaining residual stresses lead to the deformation of the discs during their lifetime. In production practice, three methods are used to reduce residual stresses: thermo-fixing, dynamic stabilisation and vibratory stabilisation consisting in bringing discs to transverse resonance vibrations and maintaining resonance until significant stress reduction. The article proposes a method of stabilising the discs using the resonance phenomenon at the first few frequencies. In this article, Cauchy’s function method and characteristic series method are used to develop solution value problem for clamped circular plates with discrete inclusions as concentrated masses and springs. Calculation methods for quick estimation of the own frequency of discs with additional ring mass enabling the use of low power vibration inductors are presented. The use of a special membrane and a pneumatic cushion in the construction of the stand allows to induce vibrations of higher frequencies.

This article presents selected issues related to the selection methodology of the brake linings during the research process. It is a very important issue due to effect on the vehicle safety. Safety concerns are applicable to both road/track vehicles and aircraft. Scientific institutions and research centers make continuous efforts in order to improve brake lining materials and full-scale brakes. Analytical prediction of the friction material properties and behavior is not accurate enough due to complexity of the physical phenomena. Analysis of the friction materials is difficult due to scarce of data given by the manufacturers. Every friction material needs to be tested in order to prove its properties. First stage of the selection is the tests made in laboratory using both model and full-scale techniques. Because of the laboratory tests, following parameters are obtained: weight and geometrical brake wear, braking torque, friction coefficient and brake temperature. All of these factors must be taken into account for linings selection and design a prototype of the brake. Selection of the friction material can be performed in consideration of various requirements of the brake system users and law defined factors. Authors of the paper base on the extensive experience of the Institute of Aviation, Landing Gear Laboratory tests of brake linings.

Armoured vehicles are nowadays important part of modern army's equipment. Reliability of armoured vehicles is a key feature in safety of transported staff and goods. Due to high mass of these vehicles there is a real problem with optimal brake systems which should be efficient enough in order to maintain as short as possible braking distance and have acceptable manufacturing and maintenance costs. Except for military use, there is a large market for armoured vehicles civilian use by rich or influential persons, security companies and banks. Civilian use of the armoured vehicles generates problems of moving on public roads with all restrictions for brake systems which are required by law. Brakes verification is a difficult and time consuming process due to many circumstances which must be taken into account during tests. Brake tests should be done on many levels including laboratory tests made on samples, laboratory tests made on fully assembled brakes and finally tests made with use of fully prepared vehicle both in laboratory and in real life conditions. Following work will show selected issues of such test path, which was made by Institute of Aviation Landing Gear Department.

Disc brakes in passenger cars are extremely important due to safety concerns. Their operational quality largely rests on the conditions of contact between the working elements, which mainly consists offlat and dry sliding. The tribological phenomena thatoccur during braking are, unfortunately, extremely complex and difficult to recreate in laboratory settings. Many scientific institutes conduct research to improve our understanding of these phenomena. The results they present make it possible to continuously simplify the procedures for selecting friction materials and reducing the costs of identifying the properties of new products. This article analyses the methods commonly used by researchers. It also presents different set-ups of research stations, as well as the advantages and drawbacks of each method.

Brakes are one of the most important safety systems in moving vehicles and machines. In vehicles such as cars or motorcycles brakes are used for stopping, controlling speed, and sometimes changing direction of travel. In aircraft, the main function of brakes is to reduce landing speed. As landing is one of the most dangerous maneuvers in aircraft operation, brakes must be efficient and reliable in order to ensure safety of the crew, passengers, and cargo. The most efficient brakes nowadays are friction brakes where velocity is controlled by friction of a pair of specially designed materials, which ensure stable and high friction coefficient over the course of the required braking process. The process itself is the dissipation of energy during aircraft movement which generates very high temperatures in friction materials during the time of the braking process. The materials and the whole brakes have to be temperature resistant, and we must ensure braking parameters are stable during the whole process. The same principle relates to the endurance/fatigue of the brake assemblies which must be durable enough to survive as high number of braking cycles as possible without any failure, which can result in fatal consequences. Every friction pair and every newly designed brake assembly must be laboratory tested for efficiency and endurance/fatigue in order to be used in an aircraft or vehicle. In this paper, we present the basic set of laboratory tests in the scope of friction materials and brake assemblies. Results of the tests are used as confirmations/proofs of proper and safe operation of the brakes for use in vehicles, especially in aircraft but also in land-based vehicles.

The main functions of an aviation brake system are to slow the speed of the vehicle, to perform stable deceleration, and to hold the vehicle stationary after it stopped. They must perform safely under a variety of operating conditions such as slippery, wet and dry runways, full or light load of the vehicle, new or worn brake linings, novice or experienced pilot, etc. The experimental tests show that about 95% of friction energy is converted into thermal energy by plastic deformation of brake linings surface layers and other deformations. The friction materials temperature growth is caused by this energy transformation. The influence of braking temperature is very important to the tribology characteristics, durability and reliability of friction brakes. Landing Gear Department Laboratory performed many experimental tests on full-scale brakes and also on friction material samples. It was performed on the special laboratory test rigs. During the Anti Lock Braking system test, the Landing Gear Department Laboratory workers performed the brake linings temperature measurements. Author observed a positive influence of ABS system use on temperature curve. The aim of this article is to compare the test results of braking with ABS system applied to braking without ABS.

Opis:
Experience gained from the use of buses in urban conditions showed that the working conditions of friction elements of the braking system, ensuring traffic safety, are associated with high loads. This leads to the intensive wear and premature replacement of the worn friction components, which reduces the overall reliability of the brake system and road safety. On the other hand, the friction linings of brake mechanisms may act as abrasives that cause the wear of brake discs or drums. Their replacement during operation is associated with a significant increase in the cost of spare parts. Therefore, it is assumed that the determination of the tribological properties of the brake linings in the brake mechanisms, before their exploitation, will increase the efficiency and safety of the vehicles’ operation, which justifies the choice of the research subject matter for its real and practical significance. The paper presents the preliminary results of the research into the main elements of the brakes in a city bus on a test stand mapping the real working conditions. For the testing, brake shoes of different manufacturers were used. Their tribological characteristics, reasons for their wear, and operational recommendations were determined.
Do badań wykorzystano szczęki hamulcowe różnych producentów. Określono ich charakterystyki tribologiczne, powody ich zużywania oraz podano zalecenia eksploatacyjne.
