Opis:
Studies on men’s body image are becoming increasingly popular. They show that body dissatisfaction may lead to certain health disorders (depressive mood, bigorexia, anxiety). This study focuses on the differences in body dissatisfaction among young men who work out to reach different aims (to increase, strengthen or to shape muscle mass). Body dissatisfaction was measured using the Bodybuilder Image Grid Scale. The results of this study show that there are no significant differences between men who exercise in gyms using different types of work-out. However, there is a significant difference between men who exercise to gain muscle mass and those who do not work out at all; the first group is less satisfied with their bodies as far as fat mass is concerned. Moreover, the evaluation of health and body attractiveness was measured using the questionnaire ‘Your values’ and asking men about the hypothetical possibility of giving up their longevity for a perfect body. The results indicate that men who exercise tend to treat health more instrumentally than those who do not train. Finally, those who train regularly find attractiveness of the body much more important than those who do not exercise at all.

maternal-fetal attachment
Opis:
Introduction: Pregnancy is the time of the most dynamic and visible changes in a woman's body. Some researchers have shown that woman's ability to adapt to changes in her body may affect the attitude towards her baby. Purpose: To study the relation between body image in pregnant women and the attachment to the unborn child. Materials and methods: 100 women in II trimester completed Maternal Fetal Attachment Scale (MFAS) and Body Image Questionnaire. Results: The analysis showed a significant relation between the attitudes towards the own body during pregnancy and the quality of the mother-child attachment. According to the research, the mothers who were strongly attached to the child were concurrently dissatisfied with bodily changes. Socio demographic variables (age, education, marital status, place of living), pregnancy-related variables (pregnancy planning, familiarity with child's gender, the level of preparation to maternity) and the variables related to the woman's body (BMI before pregnancy, severity of pregnancy complaints) had no impact on maternal-fetal attachment. Also, the attitude towards the own body was formed regardless of socio demographic variables and pregnancy-related variables. Significant relations between the attitudes towards own body and the variables associated with woman's body (BMI, pregnancy complaints) were observed. Conclusions: Woman's attitude towards the body and changes during pregnancy is a complex issue. According to the results of this study, it is possible to develop a positive bond with the child despite experiencing dissatisfaction with own body.

Opis:
The impact of obesity on health, social care and the economy has long been established. Being obese or overweight increases the risk of developing a range of serious diseases including psychological disturbance, diabetes, heart disease, musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and cancers that lead to premature disability and mortality. The good news is that overweight and obesity are largely prevent and /or control-able through losing weight strategies and fitting room can be an option for whom are observant about their surroundings. The fitting room is usually where the consumer makes their final evaluation about the products while assessing personal appearance, and finally deciding whether or not to purchase the garment. For some people, fitting room it is something to get through without visible or psychic damage and for some others is a horrifying place as they may suddenly realize how overweight or obese they are that could be a challenging start to maintain a healthy body image in a life-changing journey. In fact, the changing room is inspired to provide some people with personal choices toward a desirable weight therapy through engaging in exercise and diet. Hence, fitting room while in shopping even for entertainment purposes is advised as a beneficial life - time decision in weight control and obesity may take place by individual in this way.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the associations between comfort in the physical proximity of others and interpersonal trauma and body ego. Comfort in the physical proximity of others was measured using a self-report method, as well as by means of a procedure where the experimenter initiated interpersonal touch. The results show that comfort in the physical proximity of others (based on self-report) was associated with four types of trauma (emotional, physical or sexual abuse and emotional neglect) as well as with all aspects of dysfunctional body ego (e.g. disrupted perception, problems with interpreting and regulating physical states). Defying expectations, the types of trauma studied did not differentiate individuals experiencing comfort from those experiencing discomfort, in an experimental setting of being touched. As predicted, both groups differed in all aspects of body ego. Moreover body ego proved to be a mediator between trauma and comfort in the physical proximity of others (self-report measure).

Opis:
In the conditions of late modernity, the body is a project realized in both the public and private spheres. The aim of this article is to review theories and empirical studies concerning socio-cultural issues and the subjective determinants of perceptions of physicality. The body has become the main instrument of experiencing the world and oneself, a significant area, a key element of an individual’s identification strategy. The modern human speaks with and through the body, the person’s identity is reduced to self-presentation, by projecting their physicality, they project themselves. The presentation and reception of body is dominated by an aesthetic perspective, organically bound with the tendency to aestheticize daily life in general. The text is based on empirical data, analysis of 403 qualitative interviews conducted between 2012-2014 in Polish cities: Warsaw, Kielce, Chelmno, and Przemysl. The research shows that the emotional aspect of experiencing body, as well as the cognitive aspect within consciousness, the mental image of one’s own body, differ according to the respondents’ age and gender.

The concept of body image can be considered on many levels, but constant is the fact that it is a mental image: of the size, shape, and form of one’s own body, influencing one’s overall self-image. Previous multifaceted research shows that perceptions of body image can be influenced among other things by physical activity or personality. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between body image perception and personality, considering individuals who regularly practice physical activity (N= 104). The following research tools were used: IPIP-BFM-20, Body Esteem Scale and a questionnaire consisting of questions allowing for the respondents’ characterization. Analysis of the collected data revealed that almost half of the respondents are currently dissatisfied with their body image. It was also noted that those who were satisfied with their body image scored statistically significantly higher on two of the five personality traits measured: Extraversion and Emotional Stability. The results obtained showing the relationship between personality and body image perception are consistent with previous studies in which the type of physical activity and its frequency were not examined.

Psychological distress associated with body image disorders in patients with breast cancer is well described in the literature. Given the known insults to body image caused by both disease and oncological treatment, body image distress is commonplace within this patient population. Stress is also a frequent sequela of a diagnosis of and treatment for cancer and may manifest various forms. This study undertook to investigate the nature of stress and body image distress within a cohort of 80 female breast cancer patients drawn from three outpatient cancer treatment facilities in the Durban, South Africa region and to examine its correlation with psychological and behavioural indices reported by these patients as compared to a group of 80 female patients undergoing treatment for other types of cancer. The results indicated that although there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of depressive symptomatology and measures of self-esteem, where scores largely fell within normal ranges, the breast cancer patients experienced higher levels of body image dissatisfaction as compared to the other group and that stress tended to be expressed in psychological and behavioural indices as opposed to physiological expression.

The aim of the study was to establish whether any relation exists between depression symptoms and the extent to which adolescents accept the changes their bodies undergo (the physical changes they experience at different stages of growing up), and if the connection does exist – is it gender-related. Method: Data were collected from four sub-groups: younger girls (aged 12–13), older girls (aged 17–18), younger boys (aged 12–13), and older boys (aged 17–18). The participants were asked to complete questionnaires that allow to measure the subjective intensity of depression symptoms (BDI), the current stage of biological changes (the Tanner scale) and whether these changes are accepted by the individual who experiences them (the original Feelings Towards the Body questionnaire). Results: The less adolescents accept the changes in their bodies, the higher depression symptoms they demonstrate. For younger girls, older girls and older boys, no links were established between levels of accepting bodily changes and early/late maturation (in comparison with the population of their peers). For younger boys, the later the stage of their development, the less likely they are to accept the changes in their bodies. Girls report more intense depression symptoms than boys do, but their levels of accepting changes that occur around puberty are significantly lower only when compared to those of older boys. Conclusions: Whether biological changes during puberty (mainly feelings of anxiety and shame related to the body) are accepted or not, was proven to be a significant predictor of more intense depression symptoms.

This study aimed to review the literature on anorexia prevention programmes targeting the general population and populations at risk and to describe the programmes selected for the review. Methods: The review was conducted under the PRISMA guidelines. The following digital databases were explored: PsychINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science. 412 records, including 92 full-length research articles, were critically analysed. Fourteen studies that met all inclusion criteria were ultimately included in the analysis. Results: Most studies described prevention programmes for adolescents or young adults. The majority of the reviewed programmes targeted girls and young women. General and selective prevention programmes were the predominant types of interventions. The evaluated programmes differed considerably in content, modality, and duration. All of the reviewed studies have been published in the last 18 years. Conclusions: Further research is needed to develop anorexia prevention programmes that are more effective, deliver more lasting outcomes, and can be applied in various populations. Methods supporting the broad implementation of such programmes should also be identified.

Female breasts have been admired for a variety of reasons throughout the ages. This can influence a preoccupation with breast size. As a result, augmentation mammoplasty (AM) has become a sought-after elective cosmetic procedure, especially in western culture. Research has confirmed the psychological benefits of AM, but it has also shown that some women with a self-perceived inadequate breast size who request AM can present with psychological problems. Likewise, authorities agree that the diagnosis of breast cancer which remains one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among women worldwide, can have an adverse effect on women psychologically, and that the number of patients who live with the psychological sequelae of both the disease and its treatment continue to rise. Several factors relate to psychological distress in women coping with these issues. In particular, self-esteem and body image-related problems faced by women can add a burden to their psychological well-being. This article reviews some of these issues and psychological treatment options to enhance women’s adjustment in this regard.

This paper investigates the impact of state self-objectification on body image and tests the role of self-esteem in this relationship. The study group consisted of 136 adolescents from a junior high school in Poland, aged 14 to 16 years: 65 boys (Mage = 15; SD = 0.79) and 71 girls (Mage = 14.93; SD = 0.82). Both age groups were relatively homogeneous in terms of demography and BMI. The study consisted of three phases. First, the participants completed demographic measures assessing demographic variables, body image, and self-esteem. The second phase was conducted one week later to induce a temporary state of self-objectification by means of a magnifying mirror. The third phase followed a ten-minute experimental exposure by filling in the Self-Objectification State Questionnaire. A mediation analysis was performed separately in both adolescent groups, according to the approach proposed by Hayes and Preacher (2014). Self-esteem mediated significantly the relationship between state self-objectification and body image. In the group of girls the mediation model produced a complete effect, whereas in the group of boys the mediation effect was partial.

In this report, we tested if viewing the body as an object (BAO; two forms: thin and curvaceous) and body as a process (BAP) on social media, and sociocultural attitudes regarding social media, directly affected women’s state physical appearance anxiety. Women (N = 249; Mage = 23.81; SD = 5.68) completed an online experiment where they were randomly assigned to view BAO-thin, BAO-curvaceous, and BAP images. Viewing BAO-curvaceous images had no effect on women’s state physical appearance anxiety. However, viewing BAO-thin and BAP images decreased women’s state physical appearance anxiety. Further, this effect was stronger for women with greater internalization and awareness of body ideals conveyed by social media (i.e., high sociocultural attitudes). We conclude that sociocultural attitudes regarding social media may buffer the adverse effects of viewing BAO-thin images.

The studies were aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of a Polish version of the Body and Appearance Self-Conscious Emotions Scale (BASES; Castonguay, Sabiston, Crocker, & Mack). In Study 1, data from student (n = 325) and community samples (n = 385) provided evidence for the four-factor structure of the Polish BASES and its adequate construct validity. Data from a separate sample (n = 443) in Study 2 supported the four-factor structure of the Polish BASES, as well as its convergent validity through significant correlations between BASES scores and other variables related to body image and well-being. Sex invariance was also tested and confirmed, although mean scores for guilt and shame were higher for women. The Polish BASES is an appropriate and psychometrically sound measure of body and appearance-related self-conscious emotions.
