A man's physical fitness largely depends on the ability to maintain body balance. This ability is examined by using various methods and tests, still searching for the best way of its evaluation. Body balance is discussed from different aspects and in relation to various developmental periods. Usually, static and dynamic balance are distinguished. Commonly used computer techniques and different kinds of tests of balance evaluation are still not satisfactory and they constitute a topic for discussion over the value of these measurements. Balance system of the body require the interaction of many mechanisms, which undoubtedly, impedes the construction of the measuring device used for its accurate and reliable assessment, both in static and dynamic conditions. The conducted research on linking body balance with other manifestations of a man's motor skills, for example the impact of body composition and gender on the level of this feature, is very helpful in the accurate assessment of this feature among the youth and children. The differences, resulting from the interaction between environmental and genetic factors, in somatic potential that are manifested in different body size and body proportions, may be decisive of a children’s motor skills and predispositions. It has been proved that the influence of specific exercises can effectively influence the level of children's balance. The purpose of the report is to review different methods of body balance examination. The PubMed and Scopus databases have been searched. The following keywords were used in the search: balance, postural balance, coordination, coordination diagnostics. Sprawność fizyczna człowieka w dużej mierze zależy od zdolności utrzymywania równowagi ciała. Zdolność tę bada się używając różnych metod i testów, wciąż szukając najlepszego sposobu jej oceny. Równowagę ciała omawia się w różnych aspektach i w odniesieniu do różnych okresów rozwojowych. Zwykle rozróżnia się równowagę statyczną i dynamiczną. Powszechnie stosowane techniki komputerowe oraz różnego rodzaju testy oceny równowagi wciąż nie są satysfakcjonujące i stanowią temat do dyskusji nad wartością tychże pomiarów. Układ równowagi ciała wymaga współdziałania wielu mechanizmów, co niewątpliwie utrudnia skonstruowanie przyrządu pomiarowego służącego do jego trafnej i rzetelnej oceny, zarówno w warunkach statycznych jak i dynamicznych. Prowadzone badania nad powiązaniem równowagi ciała z innymi przejawami motoryczności człowieka, np. wpływem budowy ciała i płci na poziom danej cechy są bardzo pomocne w rzetelnej ocenie równowagi wśród młodzieży i dzieci. Wynikające ze współoddziaływania czynników i środowiskowych różnice potencjału somatycznego wyrażonego m.in. wysokością, masą i proporcjami ciała, mogą decydować o odmiennych predyspozycjach i zdolnościach motorycznych dzieci i młodzieży. Dowiedziono, iż wpływ określonych ćwiczeń może efektywnie wpływać na poziom równowagi dzieci. Celem doniesienia jest dokonanie przeglądu różnych metod badania równowagi ciała. Przeszukano bazy danych PubMed i Scopus. Słowa kluczowe użyte w wyszukiwaniu: balance, postural balance, koordynacja, diagnostyka koordynacji.

Disorders in the functioning of the human body balance system exist in 20-30 % of adults and in 8-18% of children. The main causes of these aberrations are: benign positional vertigoes, migraine, anxiety disorders and depression, cerebrovascular diseases, brain traumas, labyrinthitis, toxic impairment of labyrinth, vestibular neuronitis, Ménière disease, brain tumours. Among the minor causes of these disorders are: internal ear disorders, inner ear circulation disorders, sclerosis multiplex (SM), epilepsy, arterial hypertension, postural hypertension, heart rhythm disorders, sclerosis, hypoglycaemia and involutional alternations (see: prezbiastazja). Human body balance disorders increase the risk of falls, which may threaten health and life. Frequency of these disorders raises with age, which is the cause of progressing degeneration of all the anatomical and functional systems, the efficiency of which affects the stability of the human body. Determination of the factors, which are related to a worse functioning of the body balance system of young people, who do not experience any clinical symptoms caused by this system is vital, especially in preventing falls and complications attributed to them. It allows to implement possibly early the preventive actions substantial for people encumbered by the risk factors. The aforesaid actions may consist in the alternation of a given factor (diet, sleep, physical activity). In case of  the factors, which are not subject to modifications (i.e. heterogeneous form of the functional lateralization), it is essential to prevent potential diseases that disturb the functioning of the body balance system, which is already impaired. This study aimed to acquaint with the findings concerning the evaluation of the functional lateralization enriched with a new diagnostic tool – a computerized dynamic posturography. The computerized dynamic posturography (CPD) is a state-of-the-art and faultless evaluation tool of the functional lateralization. It provides a comprehensive knowledge, which concerns not only the preferences of the body, but also constitutes an objective and quantitative diagnostic method for the disorders in the functioning of the body balance system. CPD differentiates a few clinical protocols: the Sensory Organization Test (SOT); the Motor  Control Test (MCT); the Adaptation Test (ADT). SOT evaluates the control of the body balance in different conditions (eyes closed/eyes opened;  environment moves/ground moves) of the sensory systems stimulation. MCT assesses the postural reactions (body postures) in response to an unexpected changes in the location of the feet prop surface. ADT  assesses the efficiency of the adaptation mechanisms in the body balance control.

Introduction: Postural instability and difficulty in maintaining an upright position in patients after a stroke are connected with an impaired schema of the body. As a result, patients are not able to cope with daily activities. NDT-Bobath and PNF methods are commonly used in physiotherapy nowadays. The study aimed at an evaluation of the usefulness of a stabilometric platform in measuring stability and body balance in a standing position as well as the assessment of the impact of the above methods on the improvement of balance in patients after a stroke.Material and methods: Sixty-two patients after an ischemic stroke were included in the study. The patients were randomized to two therapy groups: NDT-Bobath and PNF. To assess the stability of posture and body balance in static conditions (measuring the field of support and COP path length) an ALFA stabilometric platform was used. Results: Before the therapy was conducted a longer COP path and a larger field of support in patients with left-sided paresis were observed, which confirms the increased instability of the body and impaired balance. After the therapy the researchers observed a shorter COP path in patients with right-sided paresis (in both the groups) while there was no such trend in relation to the field of support. After the therapy patients for whom the NDT-Bobath method had been used demonstrated a significantly greater reduction of the COP path and reduction in the area of support.Conclusion: Increased postural instability and impairment of body balance occurred in stroke patients with left-sided paresis. In the physiotherapy of post-stroke patients NDT-Bobath and PNF methods have important therapeutic properties. A significantly greater reduction of the COP path and a large reduction in the area of support were observed in patients treated with the NDT-Bobath method.
Wstęp: Niestabilność posturalna i trudności w utrzymaniu pionowej postawy u osób po udarze mózgu mogą być związane z zaburzeniem schematu ciała (tzw. nieuwagą połowiczą). W konsekwencji chorzy nie mogą swobodnie funkcjonować w Ŝyciu codziennym. Obecnie w fizjoterapii najczęściej stosowane są metody neurofizjologiczne jak: metoda NDT-Bobath i PNF. Celem pracy była ocena przydatności platformy stabilometrycznej do pomiaru stabilności i równowagi ciała w pozycji stojącej oraz wpływu w/w metod na równowagę u chorych po udarze mózgu. Materiał i metody: Badania przeprowadzono u 62 chorych po udarze niedokrwiennym mózgu. Chorych losowo przydzielono do dwóch grup terapii: NDT-Bobath i PNF. Do oceny stabilności postawy i równowagi ciała w warunkach statycznych (pomiar powierzchni pola podparcia i długości drogi COP) wykorzystano platformę stabilometryczną ALFA. Wyniki: Przed rozpoczęciem terapii obserwowano dłuższą drogę COP i większe pole podparcia u chorych z niedowładem lewostronnym, co potwierdza większą niestabilność ciała i zaburzenia równowagi w tej grupie chorych. Po terapii większe wartości skrócenia drogi przemieszczania się COP występowało u chorych z niedowładem prawostronnym (w obu grupach), a w przypadku wielkości pola podparcia nie obserwowano takiej tendencji. Po terapii stwierdzono istotnie większe skrócenie drogi COP i zmniejszenie pola powierzchni podparcia u chorych, u których stosowano metodę NDT-Bobath. Wnioski: U chorych po udarze mózgu większe zaburzenia stabilności postawy i równowagi ciała występują u osób z niedowładem lewostronnym. W fizjoterapii chorych po udarze mózgu metody NDT-Bobath i PNF wykazują działania terapeutyczne. Istotnie większe skrócenie drogi COP i większe zmniejszenie pola powierzchni podparcia obserwowano u chorych leczonych metodą NDT-Bobath.

Purpose: The biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system in patients after tibial nonunion treatment using the Ilizarov method have not yet been fully explored. From the orthopaedic and patient point of view, after the treatment, an assessment should be carried out of the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. The aim of this study was to assess the body balance of patients treated with the Ilizarov method for tibial nonunion. Methods: The research group included 24 individuals with a mean age of 55 years, who were treated for aseptic tibial nonunion with the Ilizarov method. The control group was matched to the study group in terms of gender and age, and consisted of 32 subjects with a mean age of 50.5 years and no significant medical history. This study evaluated the balance of patients with the use of pedobarography. Results: In the control group, a statistically significantly shorter path of centre of gravity was observed. There were no statistical differences between the study and control groups for the field area of the centre of gravity. There were no statistical differences between the study and control groups for the minor axis length or major axis length of the centre of gravity. There was a relationship between the centre of pressure path length and the age of the participants in both the control group and the study group. Conclusions: Treatment of patients with tibial nonunion with the Ilizarov fixator achieves similar balance to healthy volunteers. In the pedobarographic evaluation, patients treated for tibial nonunion using the Ilizarov method had similar statics of the musculoskeletal system to healthy volunteers.

Purpose: To evaluate of the energy expenditure in 3 types of dance classes (ballet, Jazz, and contemporary), as well as of the daily energy balance depending on dance type. Materials and methods: 40 females attending dance classes with a median age of 21.0 (19.0-25.0) and 10 males with a median age of 27.0 (20.0-28.0) participated in this study. The energy cost of each dance class was measured using the BodyMedia SenseWear Sensor and total daily energy expenditure was evaluated using a 3-day recording of physical activity. The dietary intake was evaluated with a 3-day food diary recording. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software. Results: Median energy expenditure varied from 306 (277-328) Kcals/class for contemporary dance to 327 (290-355) Kcals/class for ballet and 369 (333-394) Kcals/class for jazz for females with significant differences between contemporary and jazz classes. For males, energy expenditure was 508 (447-589) Kcals/class and 564 (538-593) Kcals/class for ballet and jazz classes, respectively. Females had lower values for all anthropometric measurements, energy intake, macronutrient intakes, and energy expenditure, compared with males. The anthropometric characteristics did not differ between dance types. Both female and male dance students were in a negative energy balance. Conclusions: The use of sensors such as BodyMedia SenseWear together with keeping daily diaries make measurement of physical activity in dancing reliable and accurate. Exercise expenditure differs across types of dance in females but not in males. Both sexes had inadequate energy and carbohydrate intakes.

Purpose: Head constitutes 6% of our body weight and significantly influences human body motor system mechanics. From physiological point of view, it should be located at extension of body middle line. Its location being modified results in many consequences in motor system. Our research was aimed at assessing the influence of head position on human body balance stabilographic variables. Methods: The research was made on a group of 62 patients: 45 women and 17 men, aged from 40 to 60 yrs, 46 yrs on average. Head position in sagittal and frontal plane was assessed with photogrammetric method. Chosen stability parameters were estimated with dynamometric platform PEL 38 and computer software TWIN 99. Results: The results confirmed correlations between existing stabilographic values and head position in frontal plane only. Head position, when changed in this plane, increased the amplitude ( p = 0.001) and average speed of body gravity center trembilng ( p = 0.002). There were no significant relations found in sagittal plane ( p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our results show that the head position influences stabilographic variables. Its change in frontal plane decreases body posture stability to the largest extent.

The study is aimed to analyze the interplay among the physical balance level, physical activities realization, anthropometric determinants and psychosocial indices in relation to gender and age of seniors 65+. Methods: The participants comprised 500 seniors in age 65+ (234 males and 266 females) participated voluntarily in the research. For data collection we used methods of the “Medical anamnesis”, “Tinetti Balance Assessment Tool”, “Health Survey SF-36”. For statistics analyses the multivariate regression with reduction of dimensionality and orthogonal projection to latent structure was used. Results: Analyzed disabilities “Depression”, “Type 2 diabetes mellitus”, “Hypertension” and “Vertigo” significantly negatively interplay with the Tinneti summary balance score in both genders. Results of the anthropometric parameters of female seniors, in a contrast to the male seniors parameters, proved that body high and muscle mass correlate significantly positively with the performance of the Tinneti summary balance test (p<0.01) in female seniors. Conclusion: Performing of physical activities positively correlates with the performance in the Tinneti summary balance test in both genders of seniors. There are differences between male and female seniors according the psychosocial factors interplay with performance in the Tinneti summary balance test, when more interplaying psychosocial factors were analyzed in females.

Changes in security environment after the end of Cold War and 9/11 have strongly affected our security concepts and paradigms. In the field of counter-terrorism, a serious conceptual and practical debate on the relationship between security and human rights and freedoms has begun. The goal of this paper is to reflect on this complex relationship at the conceptual level and introduce the empirical debate on this relationship in the field of civil aviation (case of introducing body scanners). The paper’s results show that the concept of human security usefully integrates the care for human rights and security of individuals. The debate on the potential introduction of body scanners on the European airports was actually a debate on the ways of providing individual human security on the airports with simultaneous concern for other human rights. The output of this debate was a compromise: body scanners can be used at the discretion of individual airports and member states, but are not an obligatory measure on all European airports.

Opis:
Identification of factors that affect postural stability may help to improve diagnostic accuracy and enhance the quality of treatment and rehabilitation. This study sought to assess the relationship between postural stability parameters and anthropometric factors of persons with hearing impairment (HI). Methods: The study included 128 individuals – 42 subjects with HI and 86 without HI (healthy controls). Research methodology included an interview and a medical examination, anthropometric measurements and stabilometric tests on platforms with stable and unstable surfaces. Results: In the group of female study participants with HI, significant correlations were only noted between body height and the Fall Risk Index (FRI). In the group of male subjects with HI, the study revealed significant correlations between FRI and body mass, BMI, % MM (muscle mass percentage) and % FAT (fat percentage). Moreover, moderate correlation was found between COP path with eyes open and body mass, while high correlation was observed between COP path with eyes open and BMI, % MM and % FAT. No significant correlation was noted between FRI and body height in men with HI. Conclusions: The examination of correlations between postural stability and body build of persons with HI did not confirm the effects of body height on postural stability in the examined group of individuals with HI, but revealed a greater influence of somatic parameters (body mass, BMI, % MM, % FAT) on postural stability in hearing-impaired men.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine whether 10- to 13-year-old, national-level, female acrobatic gymnasts present a different quiet standing postural control (with and without visual cues) than untrained female peers. Methods: The mean velocity of the center of pressure (in anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions) was computed from 60-s long quiet-standing trials on a stationary force plate in fifteen 10- to 13-year-old female acrobatic gymnasts and thirteen sex- and age-matched non-athletes. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA (acrobatic gymnasts vs. non-athletes and eyes open vs. eyes closed) was used for the anterior-posterior and mediallateral COP mean velocity. The relation between subjects’ body mass and COP mean velocity was tested with the used Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient. Results: Postural sway (represented by COP mean velocity) was not significantly different between the acrobatic gymnasts and the non-athletes ( p > 0.05), except for the faster medial-lateral sway in eyes-open conditions in the acrobatic gymnasts ( p < 0.05). The gymnasts’ body mass negatively correlated with their anterior-posterior sway velocity in both visual conditions (eyes open: r = –0.7; eyes closed: r = –0.6) and with medial-lateral sway velocity during eyes-closed trials (r = –0.5; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Results of the study indicate that in quiet standing postural control 10- to 13-year-old acrobatic gymnasts did not make use of their trained abilities. Heavier gymnasts might have been more stable than lighter ones during quiet standing.

Opis:
The purpose of this work was to assess the differences of the values of body posture indices, measured with the Moire’s method, between girls and boys aged 13 and the relationships of these values with the results of the Y-Balance Test. Methods: The study involved a group of healthy volunteers attending junior high schools in Cracow. The group consisted of 20 girls and 35 boys. Basic somatic parameters were measured within this work: body height and weight. Body posture was assessed according to the general methodology of the Moire’s technique and 14 body posture indices were obtained as a result: 6 in the sagittal plane, 1 in the axial plane and 7 in the coronal plane. Postural stability was assessed with the Y-Balance Test (YBT). Results: The studied girls and boys had practically the same body posture – statistical differences were found only in 3 out of 14 assessed indices measured with the Moire’s technique. Scoliosis was found in as many as 51% of the subjects, however, mean values of deviations from the C7-S1 line were not large. Conclusions: In the group of girls, the set of blades (below – above) was statistically significantly correlated with the global YBT result for the right inferior extremity, and in the group of boys – the set of the waist triangles (below – above) was statistically significantly correlated with the global YBT results for the right and left inferior extremities.

Opis:
One of the many elements of the process of qualifying the candidates for military aircraft pilots is the assessment of the correct functioning of their body balance system, responsible, inter alia, for spatial orientation during a flight. That system continuously controls the spatial position of the center of body mass. To measure that value directly is a complex metrological task. That is why an equivalent measure is used in tests of standing posture stability, i.e. the position of a projection of the center of mass on a supporting plane. Quantitative information determining the characteristics of the body balance system may be obtained in posturographic tests, which include measurement, recording and assessment of the trajectory of a projection of the examined person's center of body mass. At the preliminary stage, examined were nineteen candidates for fighter pilots (one woman and 18 men), students of the Polish Air Force Academy in Dęblin. Based on the conducted measurements of the body mass center position and the stabilographic tests, the correctness of their balance system performance was assessed. The article discusses the examination methodology, presents measurement results and conclusions.
Jednym z wielu elementów procesu kwalifikacji kandydatów na pilotów wojskowych statków powietrznych jest ocena poprawności funkcjonowania ich systemu utrzymania równowagi, odpowiedzialnego między innymi za orientację przestrzenną wr trakcie lotu. Układ ten w sposób ciągły kontroluje położenie przestrzenne środka masy ciała. Bezpośredni pomiar tej wielkości jest złożonym zadaniem metrologicznym. Z tego powodu, w badaniach stabilności postawy stojącej stosuje się miarę zastępczą, którą jest położenie rzutu środka masy na płaszczyźnie podparcia. Informację ilościową określającą właściwości układu utrzymania równowagi można uzyskać poprzez badania posturograficzne. które obejmują pomiar, rejestrację i ocenę trajektorii rzutu środka masy ciała osoby badanej. We wstępnym etapie przebadano dziewiętnastu kandydatów na pilotów samolotów odrzutowych (jedną kobietę i 18 mężczyzn) - studentów wyższej Szkoły Oficerskiej Sił Powietrznych w Dęblinie. W oparciu o przeprowadzone pomiary położenia środka masy ciała oraz badania stabilograficzne dokonano oceny poprawności funkcjonowania ich układu równowagi. W artykule omówiono metodę badań, przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów: oraz wnioski.
