Opis:
Investigations of the biofilm formation processes on biomaterials surfaces are focused on typical physiologic conditions - aerobic condition. In experimental works onto model strains, and also in the clinical reports there is a lack of the information related to the mechanisms engaged in biofilm grown under conditions of limited access to oxygen or in entirely anaerobic environment. Presented results show the colonization of medical steel 316L surface and creation of biofilm structures by E. coli bacteria’s, under oxygen deficit conditions or its total lack. In studied arrangement the change of the dynamics of bacterium growth was observed, which led to considerable slowdown of the biofilm development. Bacteria were observed with use of the combination of fluorescent dyes - bis-benzimide and propidium iodide – which makes it possible the distinction of live/death bacteria. In oxygen deficiency and in anaerobic conditions multiplication of death bacteria level in comparison to standard conditions was observed (suitably 34% and 41% dead cells, oxygenic conditions - 1%). The limitation of oxygen utilization possibility by the bacteria, which colonized investigated surfaces also resulted in decreased sizes reached by the cells.

Opis:
Water-miscible metalworking fluids are an essential component of many manufacturing processes. During their lifetime they are subject to permanent changes in their physical and chemical characteristics. Due to their high content of water and their chemical composition in use, metalworking fluids (MWF) are prone to microbial life, i.e. the proliferation of bacteria and fungi. The microbial activity leads to significant changes in the chemical composition of the MWF, which can result in the loss of their technical properties. This paper briefly discusses the influences of microbial contamination on the technical quality of MWF and presents common monitoring systems for the detection of microorganisms. Finally, measures are described that can be taken to protect MWF from damage caused by high microbial loads in daily practice. In a short outlook, alternative research approaches are mentioned that aim at sustainable use of MWF.

Opis:
A number of factors are known to be involved in Candida albicans virulence, although biofilm development on the surfaces of indwelling medical devices is considered to promote superficial or systemic disease. Based on previously reported up-regulation of saccharopine and acetyllysine in biofilm cells and activation of the lysine biosynthesis/degradation pathway, we investigated the consequences of Candida albicans lysine auxotrophy on adhesion to host tissues and biofilm formation. Our data indicate that mutant strains lysΔ21/lysΔ22, defective in homocitrate synthase, and lysΔ4, defective in homoaconitase activity (the first two α-aminoadipate pathway enzymes), are able to adhere to mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (cell line NIH/3T3) to the same extent as a control strain SC5314. On the other hand, the auxotrophic mutant strains' development on mouse fibroblast monolayers was significantly reduced up to 5 h post infection. Although invasion into human-derived oral epithelial cells was unaltered, both mutant strains formed a significantly different biofilm architecture and demonstrated diminished viability during long term biofilm propagation.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Adenoids are nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue with a relevant role in host defence against infection of upper respiratory tract. Nevertheless, adenoids are also a reservoir of microorganisms that can cause infections of upper respiratory tract and otitis particularly in children. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate and compare the association between biofilm assembly on adenoids and the incidence of recurrent infections in a paediatric population submitted to adenoidectomy by either infectious or non-infectious indication. METHODS: Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess biofilms on adenoid surface; biofilm assembly in vitro was monitored by crystal violet assay; antibiotic susceptibility was assessed following EUCAST guidelines; Hinfluenzae capsular typing was performed by PCR. RESULTS: Biofilms were present in 27.4% of adenoid samples and no statistical difference was found between infectious and non-infectious groups. In vitro, the most clinically relevant bacteria, H.influenzae, S.aureus, S.pyogenes, S.pneumoniae and M.catarrhalis, were mostly moderate biofilm assemblers (71.7%). 55.3% of these bacteria were intermediate/resistant to at least one of the tested antibiotics. No association was found between the ability to assemble biofilms in vitro and the presence of biofilms on adenoids nor antibiotic resistance. All H.influenzae were characterized as non-typeable. CONCLUSION: The presence of biofilms on adenoid surface was independent from clinical sample background. Bacterial ability to assemble biofilms in vitro cannot be used to predict biofilm assembly in vivo. The lack of correlation between biofilm formation and infectious respiratory diseases found contributes to question the relevance of biofilms on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases.

Opis:
The paper concerns an aerobic microbiological process occurring in a bubble tank bioreactor. If the process is inhibited by a carbonaceous substrate, then the steady states characteristics obtained using models without biofilm indicates a danger of irreversible washout of the biomass. It was shown that taking into account the biofilm immobilized on bioreactor’s walls and proper design of the bioreactor can lead to disappearance of the region of the multiple steady-states, i.e. to disappearance of the turning point at the steady state branches. Therefore, the operation of the bioreactor is safe in a wide range of feed flow rates, even those leading to the washout of the biomass from the liquid phase. This property was called apparent elimination of inhibition phenomenon.

Opis:
In this study, a pilot-scale subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) was deployed to study landscape water treatment. The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of hydraulic loading on pollutant removal and the spatial distribution of biofilm properties in SWIS. Results showed that the efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal degraded as hydraulic loading increased. Furthermore, quantities of the biofilm properties parameter s increased with the hydraulic loading. Polysaccharide and protein levels ranged from 560 to 1110 μg/g filler and 60 to 190 μg/g filler, respectively, at a hydraulic loading of 0.2 m/d. At a hydraulic loading of 0.4 m/d, the quantities of polysaccharide and protein ranged from 1200 to 3300 μg/g filler and 80 to 290 μg/g filler, respectively. Biofilm intensity and biofilm activity per unit weight decreased with the increase in hydraulic loading.
