Opis:
Genetic diversity manipulates a prime and vital role in the sustainable use of genetic resources. The data highlighted more insights into the genetic diversity of the arta plant (Calligonum polygonoides subsp. comosum) populations collected from three localities, Qalabshu (QQ), Mutubas (MM) and Gamasa (GG), in Egypt as gene pool for biodiversity conservation and afforestation. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers investigated the population pattern and structure. A total of 129-amplicons oscillated from 145 to 1505 bp and a total of 19-amplicons were specific markers with an average of nine bands for each population. The Shannon index (I) scored at an average of 0.3. The diversity (h) oscillated from 0.11 to 0.25. The similarity matrices based on Jaccard coefficient recorded positive values. A higher correlation (r = 0.83) was between the combined Qalabshu (QQ) and Mutubas (MM) matrices using the Mantel test with 1,000 permutations. This species has higher adaptability for their regions. This gene pool is a valuable reservoir for enriching genetic diversity and provides basal information for the biodiversity conservation of a dominant species. The dominant species can be utilised in afforestation in the same region or another region which has the same environmental conditions.

The aims of this study are to model past (LIG, LGM and Mid-Holocene), present and future (2050 and 2070) distributions of the Quercus vulcanica Boiss. & Heldr. ex Kotschy by using Maximum Entropy, and to predict suitable areas for the conservation of the species for future planning. MaxEnt distribution modeling was used to model distributions. Results for past bioclimatic conditions show that the distribution area of the species expanded and then contracted (LIG to LGM and LGM to HOL). The modelling shows that the distribution range of the species will be narrower in the future. The species will be facing extinction towards 2070. Therefore, the conservation status of the species should be evaluated according to the present findings. Although the largest population of the Q. vulcanica is found in Isparta and Afyonkarahisar Provinces located in Southwestern Turkey, this area will not be suitable for the growth and survival of the species in the future. For this reason, a new nature reserve area should be established in a more suitable climate.

Rare and endemic plant species represent important components of plant biodiversity which require protection to ensure their sustainable conservation. Cerastium banaticum (Rochel) Heuff. is such an endemic and rare species from Romania, for which the genetic variability of two natural populations was studied by SSR markers. Shannon’s information index revealed low levels of genetic diversity in both populations (I = 0.296). As the first attempt in a conservation program a reproducible micropropagation protocol was established starting from seeds, followed by multiplication, rooting, and ex vitro acclimatization. Among the various plant growth regulators tested the highest multiplication coefficient was achieved on a culture medium with 0.5 mg L -1 6-furfurylaminopurine (K) and 1 mg L -1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). On this PGRs concentration a number of 26.6 shoots/individual explant with a mean length of 7.9 cm for new generated shoots was registered. The highest number of roots/indi- vidual initiated shoot was 2.6 and it was recorded on a culture medium with 0.5 mg L -1 2-isopentyl-adenine (2iP) and 0.1 mg L -1 NAA. The outdoor acclimatization was successfully performed in a specially designed rocky area in the ‘Alexandru Borza’ Botanical Garden, Cluj-Napoca (Romania).

Over the centuries, arboreta and botanical gardens have performed a variety of functions, the most important being the collection and sharing of the various plant collections. Initially, these collections mainly included medicinal plants for the education of future physicians or pharmacists. The aim of this article is to show the significant role of these units in the forest and nature education. Conducting scientific research and making collections for educational and research purposes is carried out by botanical gardens primarily by providing access to the public to harvest in a manner that will not endanger the collection. Formal education is carried out in these units mainly through links with universities and through the organization of special educational activities (equivalent to museum lessons) for schools.

Opis:
Laricifomes officinalis is a wood-decay fungus that is closely associated with old individuals of Larix decidua. In the twentieth century, L. officinalis was over-harvested because of its medicinal properties; consequently, it has become very rare or almost extinct in the Alps. In this study, we investigated the population of L. officinalis in the Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park (Val d’Ossola, Italy) to assess a preliminary conservation strategy. Population consistency was estimated using field mapping, and spatial analysis was performed on host trees based on topographical and environmental variables. Mycelia were isolated from harvested basidiomata, and strain identity confirmed by molecular analysis of the ITS region. All isolated strains were tested for growth in Petri dishes containing different standard media to determine which strains had the highest growth rates; the fastest growing strains may be selected for future studies and applications. Compared to the control strains from Val Malenco and Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, all strains from Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park had lower growth rates. There was no significant difference between the growth rates of strains from Alpe Veglia and those from Alpe Devero. The results suggest that the population consistency of L. officinalis in the Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park is related to two main factors: habitat preservation and harvesting prohibition. These results confirm the need to protect L. officinalis both inside and outside natural reserves, despite the apparent increase in local populations.

Opis:
This study highlights the 75 species of dragonfly fauna associated with rice ecosystems in eastern India out of which 15 species were regular and rest were sporadic. From the general taxonomic point of view all the species were grouped under 5 families of under order Odonata. Comparing different body parts the double branching keys were prepared for easy identification of 15 common dragonfly species recorded in rice ecosystems of West Bengal. Each key begins with a couplet (a pair of alternative) and each of which leads to another couplet. Finally the reader reaches the specific identity of species. Free hand drawing of wings of the 50 dragonflies were also used for separate identification of these insect species. In addition to this, different studies were made on courtship and mating, egg laying habitats, nymphal development, longevity, flight capacity of dragonfly to make the study more interesting to the reader. The population build up of dragonfly, favors to certain altitude as well as availability of water which is reverse to the other group of insects. Three different localities were selected at 9.75 m (Chakdaha), 200 m (Cooch Behar) and 1250 m (Kalimpong) of which former two represent an unique physiographic ecological system in Eastern India characterized by extreme diversities of dragonfly inhabiting there. The studies on natural enemies of dragonfly along with their major threats indicated that about 2, 4 and 4 species were critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable in rice ecosystem of West Bengal. Dragonflies are very sensitive to changes in landscape and are reliable indicators of wetland health. Therefore the effective conservation of dragonfly depends entirely on conservation of their habitats. Different studies were made to estimate the role of dragonfly in integrated pest management of rice crop in West Bengal. An investigation was also carried out to find out the crop stage wise diversification of individual predator and found that dragonfly was more diverse during flowering to ripening stages of crop respectively. The values Simpson and Shanon diversity index showed that dragonflies are specific flowering to ripening stage of crop. Subsequently the value of Margalef index and Menhinick index also indicated that the aforesaid predators were more diverse in flowering stage of crop whereas it was least in vegetative stage of crop. From the Hill's diversity the number of abundant and most abundant species was calculated where maximum and minimum were obtained from dragonfly and staphylinid respectively. The studies on colonization and succession of major dragonfly taxa in the rice field indicated that it followed a uniform pattern in relation to growth stages as well different phases in the rice field. The studies on relative abundance of dragonfly in different ecosystems reflected that their population in fields could be conserved and enhanced through maintenance of rice weed flora on bund or allowing ratoon rice after the rice crop during fallow period. The fallow land has limited effect on incidence of insect predator in rice crop. The relative ranking chart of 50 important predators in rice ecosystem of West Bengal indicates that the insect belonging to Coleopteran (17) were top of the list whereas dragonfly was third (10). The validity of chart may increase over time and they will need to be updated periodically.

The orchid flora of Puebla State represents 16% of the total species present in Mexico demonstrating rich biodiversity. However, several municipalities in the north-east of Puebla area are located within a conservation priority area for its tropical montane cloud forest and tropical rain forest due to decision of the Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y el Uso de la Biodiversidad of Mexico. We have recorded 93 species from Cuetzalan del Progreso with 25 new records of the flora of the state. These new dditions thereby currently increase the orchid flora of Puebla to 197 species. Of these, six species are classified as threatened, three as subject to special protection by the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and one classified as least concern by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Moreover, we recorded 37 species illegally traded in “tianguis” (informal markets) of Cuetzalan del Progreso. The orchid diversity in the fragmented forests can be harnessed in establishing a model for the sustainable management and to promote conservation action f species at some level of threat and in the restoration of areas with fragmented forests. Unfortunately, the orchid diversity has been seriously endangered by several anthropogenic factors. We have also recorded significant anthropogenic threats in this municipality for the long-term existence of the local orchid members and species with potential for commercial production. A viable approach will be to allow the introduction of in vitro germination program and organic production of orchids by local and fringe communities; this will reduce inhabitants’ dependence on the scarce forest resources, lessen illegal harvesting and trafficking of wild orchids, and at the same time provide economic development for the local communities.

The Chandipore beach, situated in Balasore district, Odisha, 21°28΄N 87°01΄E / 21.47°N and 87.02°E shows an interesting nature of wave action as the water recedes up to an average of 5 kilometres during the ebb and tide, resulting in a vast, dynamic array of coastal biodiversity. It gets exposed to a huge tourism load every year and is faced with multidimensional anthropogenic interactions manifested through a varying gradient of urbanizing parameters like cattle grazing, automobile exhaust, constructions in vicinity of beach area, sewage and solid disposals etc. Present piece of work aims at documenting the premonsoon abundance and diversity of marine invertebrate fauna in this eastern Indian sea beach. Adamsia palliata, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, Diogenes rectimanus, Sabella sp., Astropecten mauritianas were found to be few of the prominent faunal representatives. Significant differences in respect of species richness have been observed among different selected ecozones through the coastal landscape based on tidal activity and anthropogenic exposure (F5.73, p ≤ 0.05). Such type of field-based observations leads to the scope of further estimation of the ecological status of these native organisms, their intra and inter-specific associations and functional contributions to coastal landscape playing role as a potential bioindicator, which may in turn become instrumental in frame working the future conservation scheme of these natural assets.

One of the important problems of modern conservation biology is the lack of reliable data on plant pollination systems, especially for taxa threatened with extinction. This paper is an attempt to collect and analyze the available literature data on pollination of Polish red list plants. The Polish red list includes 469 angiosperm taxa, over 53% of them are insect-pollinated and visited mostly by bees and fl ies, insects that are also declining in Europe. These numbers however are mainly based on lists of fl ower visitors and detailed studies of pollination biology or breeding system are available for less than 20% of the taxa, with further 10% almost completely unstudied in terms of their life histories. The paper indicates that there is an urgent need to study plant-pollinator relationships in order to better conserve the biodiversity in local and global scales.
