Opis:
Research background: Islamic banks appeared on the world scene as active players over two decades ago. Many of the principles upon which Islamic banking is based have been commonly accepted all over the world. Financial institutions driven by Islamic principles acquire new clientele without excessive marketing, due to preservation of conservative values. Contrary to the conventional investment banks, their value is based on real money, and not on virtual activities from swap and derivative assets. Competition between conventional (or traditional) and Islamic banks is increasing every day, moreover, Islamic financial institutions are more resistant to the crisis. Our study contains analysis and comparison of economic efficiency of the conventional and Islamic banks. Besides the fact that traditional and Islamic banks apply inputs differently, the reason of better efficiency of Islamic banks may be connected with different approach to the risk management and control of the banking operations by the Sharia commission. Purpose of the article: The main aim of the article is to compare the economic efficiency of the conventional and Islamic banks in Europe. Methods: To achieve the aim of the paper, firstly the selected financial indicators of traditional and Islamic banks in Europe were compared. The second, the analysis of the economic efficiency of the selected 1460 conventional and Islamic financial institutions using DEA methods was conducted. Findings & Value added: Research results indicated methodological differences in the economic efficiency measuring in the Islamic banks. At the same time, the higher economic efficiency of Islamic banks was confirmed. The results are motivating for the follow-up investigation into the causes of higher efficiency of Islamic banks compared to traditional banks.

Opis:
Purpose – The aim of the paper is to assess the role of banks and non-banks in payments from a global perspective using a comprehensive approach. The considerations are also focused on the determinants of possible changes in this area in the future.Research method – The research methods applied in the study include the literature review and the critical analysis of available empirical research results in the field of payment intermediation. The analy-sis based on desk research is focused on changes in payments trends observed worldwide. Results – The research leads to the conclusion that despite the significant role of nonbank entities on the payment services market, banks continue to be important elements of payment systems. There are no commonly used solutions that are fully separate from banking systems, and there is no doubt that this will not change in the nearest future. However, payment innovations combined with changes in regulations and central bank strategies may alter the use of both bank money and the banking infra-structure in payments.Originality /value / implications /recommendations – The paper contributes to the discussion on trends leading to a change in the role of banks and an increasing role of non-banks in payment intermediation. It investigates the problem from a global perspective and using a comprehensive approach. Its novelty lies also in the approach based on four distinguished stages of the change of the banks’ role in paymentsystems

Opis:
Szybko zmieniające się i trudne do przewidzenia warunki działania wymuszają poszukiwanie źródeł przewagi konkurencyjnej wewnątrz banku i wykorzystanie własnych zasobów w procesie jej budowy.
The dynamism of today’s banking market in Poland has motivated banks to focus on exploitation of their internal resources for higher organizational performance. Knowledge and intellectual capital embodied in intangible assets are considered as banks’ primary source of competitiveness. The paper presents the results of the survey focused on determining the role of particular intangible assets in the process of creating bank’s competitiveness and indicating the directions of bank’s intangibles effective usage. In order to understand the role of intangible assets in the process of bank’s competitiveness creation we must first define bank’s intangibles, their structure and their role in gaining sustainable advantage. Thus the empirical survey was preceded by an investigation of the current professional literature. The survey was conducted in the middle of 2012. The survey’s target group consisted of banks’ managers and customers. Results show that, despite the customer-oriented basis of competitive strategy that is usually declared by banks in Poland, banks’ managers are quite often wrong about the customers’ decisions determinants. As a result they base their strategies on a wrong foundation. It is worth to say that the importance of particular intangibles and their hierarchy for customers has being changed what has not been noticed by them. The results’ analysis was the foundation of preparing some proposals for increasing the efficiency of bank intangibles’ usage. Putting consumer needs and expectations at the heart of competitive strategy will require banks’ new skills and competences. Developing them is an inevitability because the customer satisfaction has already become the key to repeated buying and loyalty in Poland. Thus banks in Poland must learn to nurture the loyal core of their customer and develop skills for attracting the new customers.

Opis:
Research background: The innovation in Sharīʻah-compliant banking products has resulted in the rapidly increasing size of assets in Islamic banks worldwide. The assets of such banks have been growing twice as fast as those of conventional banks. Islamic banks do not depend on conventional interest, speculation, or complex derivatives stemming from banking operations. Instead, their actions in respect of profit/risk sharing, and the clarity of the contract are consistent with Islamic Sharīʻah principles, which seek to promote a more equal society. Purpose of the article: This research aims to identify and compare factors influencing the liquidity of Islamic and conventional banks in Europe. Candidate factors are sought amongst profitability, credit quality, credit expansion and capital adequacy indicators. Methodology: First, relevant financial ratios for 249 observations on Islamic banks and 2,306 observations on conventional banks are selected and compared for the period 2013?2017. Second, liquidity is explained separately for each type of banks by panel data regression to identify its determinants in a comparative context. Findings & value added: The results indicate that the impact of the net interest margin on the liquidity ratio of Islamic banks is insignificant, which is obviously due to the prohibition of the use of interest (riba). To the contrary, in conventional banking a higher net interest margin results in a reduction in liquidity. Capital adequacy has a positive influence upon liquidity in both types of banks, but in Islamic banking, the influence is 5.4 times greater. The findings strongly suggest that the liquidity of Islamic and conventional banks is affected by different factors.

The article shows the importance of customer service quality in banks. Generally known institutions, which are used by a large number of citizens are the banks.[1] Having a bank account is needed both for private individuals who are applying for a job or planning to take a loan [6] or an enterprise while investing. One of the main sources of competitive advantage is the quality of service, which in the banking sector makes it possible to gain advantage over other competitors. Customer service in the banking sector has to be delivered at a very high level as customers who take care of their savings must be certain that nothing will happen to them. Both through the impact on customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as the high quality of services offered, will make it possible to make a profit.

Opis:
The study investigates the differences in technical, pure technical, and scale efficiencies of domestic and foreign banks in Algeria over the period of 2000–2012. The study uses annual data of 10 foreign banks and 05 domestic banks operated in Algeria. The input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis model is used to measure the banks’ efficiency score. In addition, a set of parametric and non-parametric tests are used for investigating the differences in efficiency between foreign and domestic banks. The findings reveal that the banks in Algeria could improve their technical efficiency by 23%. In addition, it seems that banks in Algeria suffer from the scale inefficiency. On the other hand, the foreign banks are more technically efficient than domestic banks. The superiority of foreign banks in technical efficiency is due to their superiority in the scale efficiency.

Opis:
This paper analyzes the determinants of banks’ net interest margins in Honduras during the years 1998 to 2013 – a period characterized by increasing banks’ net interest margins, foreign bank participation and consolidation. In line with findings in the previous literature, we find that operating costs are the most important drivers of banks’ net interest margins. We also find that competition among banks has led to higher concentration and that funding by parent banks positively impacts foreign banks’ net interest margins. Together, these results suggest that banks, particularly foreign banks, are under pressure to consolidate and reduce operating costs in order to offer competitive interest margins. We conclude that further structural reforms and consolidation may lower banks’ net interest margins.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the vulnerability of Polish cooperative banks to changes in macroeconomic environments within the poviats where those banks operate. We find that the profitability, cost income and growth of cooperative banks are strongly related to local conditions. Banks headquartered in poviats with lower unemployment are able to report healthier earnings and leaner cost structures, and face better growth prospects. Deteriorations and revivals in poviats are reflected in bank performance and growth, demonstrating the sensitivity of these banks to local developments not necessarily mirrored in national economic indicators. In addition, despite homogeneity within the cooperative banking sector, we demonstrate differences in the relation of performance and economic situation between subgroups of small, medium-sized and large banks.

Opis:
The simultaneous activation of many sources of risk can slow bank operations and even lead to bankruptcy. Credit risk is the greatest threat to the orderly functioning of a bank. To protect against its materialization banks spend nearly 90% of their total capital requirement. Concentration of credit exposure to single entities, as well as to single economic sectors, can be a source of additional risks. Estimation of the additional portion of the capital requirement in selected banks in Poland in 2008-2013 indicates that banks should assign additional 4% and 2% of the capital requirement to cover the risk of exposure concentrations in: respectively, individual entities and individual economic sectors. For banks with a retail profile more important was the risk of large exposures in individual economic sectors, and for banks with a corporate profile in individual entities. Estimates were carried out according to the procedure used by the Bank of Spain and the Bank of Slovenia, and the data derived from the annual financial reports of selected banks listed on the WSE.

Opis:
Contemporary banks face a number of challenges arising from development of financial markets, globalization and technological and communication revolution. These challenges comprise significant and multifaceted changes in the market for payment services, which affect the functioning of commercial banks, including indirectly their organization. The aim of this study is to assess the potential impact of the idea of payment services hub on changes in the organization of the banking business. To achieve this objective, the different forms of centralization and integration of the infrastructure and processes in the area of payment services were presented. Next, the reference to the consequences of the concept of payment services hub for the organization of banks was made. The hypothesis of this article is as follows: full centralization of intra-bank systems, processes and activities related to the execution of payment services, will lead to the organisational division of business of some banks to the deposit-credit institution and the payment institution. The findings formulated in the article point to the need to consider in the banks’ strategies their role in a national, European and global payments market. They also show the need for a review of the organization of the banks’ operation, taking into consideration the concept of full centralization of payment services and integration of internal processes associated with their implementation. These changes may result in full separation of business as service providers from the organizational structure of banks, especially under European regulations.

Until about 25 years ago, almost all European countries had a so-called "three pillar" banking system comprising private banks, public savings banks and (mutual) cooperative banks. Since that time, several European countries have implemented far-reaching changes in their banking systems, which have more than anything else affected the two "pillars" of the savings and cooperative banks. The paper first describes these changes and points out the specific situation in Germany, as this country is almost unique in so far as the German savings banks and cooperative banks have maintained most of their traditional features. The article then describes the structure of the German "Three-Pillar" banking system and the place and role of savings and cooperative banks in it and concludes with a plea for diversity of institutional forms of banks by arguing why it is important to safeguard the strengths of those types of banks that do not conform to the model of a large shareholder-oriented commercial bank.

The impact of air distribution on the metallurgical performance of a flotation bank operating with a mineral slurry having a moderate and high frother concentration is assessed. A flotation bank of two and three 5L Denver cells was implemented, and air flow was distributed down the bank as increasing and decreasing profiles. It was observed that when operating the bank configurations with a moderate frother concentration (10 ppm DF 400) the increasing profile provided the highest Cu enrichment ratio at the expense of a slight reduction in Cu recovery. This increase in selectivity was mainly due to a significant reduction in the water recovery and mass-pull in the first cell. When the bank operated with a high frother concentration, i.e., well beyond the CCC, a significant increase in water recovery was observed, producing a significant loss in selectivity that could not be compensated by air profiling.

The purpose of this study is to identify how the sustainability and digital transition influence banks. The main thesis can be expressed as follows: sustainability transition and digital transition are changing the role and function of banks, especially the products and services offered by banks. Banks are one of main actors of a broader, multi-level governance designed to support the transition to smart, efficient and low carbon economy. The framework’s structure is based upon the multi-level perspective on socio-technical transitions created by F.W. Geels. The first section of this paper presents the most popular approaches to the problem at hand, as reported in professional literature. Section two presents characteristics of the various actors involved in the anticipated transformation of the economy. The third section discusses the changing roles and frameworks of banks associated with the notion of the broader concept of sustainability and digitalization.
