Opis:
Introduction and objective. As the autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is present in course of many disorders, an objective assessment of the ANS function is very important. In practice, the assessment is difficult, and based rather on indirect analysis of autonomically-controlled cardiovascular reflexes, than on direct recording of activity of central or peripheral autonomic structures. The aim of our paper was to discuss briefly current, clinical and scientific ANS investigations, as well as possible future methods of autonomic activity evaluation. A brief description of the state of knowledge. The review presents a short outline of autonomic function assessments based on clinical autonomic tests (e.g. “Ewing’s battery”) and discusses the heart rate variability (HRV) study, as currently popular and widespread option of analysis of the ANS activity. Other, complementary methods, including the baroreceptor sensitivity testing, microneurography or plasma norepinephrine measurement were also mentioned. The article also provides premises related to the determination of selected neuropeptides in plasma or saliva as an innovative concept of autonomic activity assessment. Summary. The available, clinical, non-invasive methods used for assessment of the ANS function are still relatively sparse and, in fact, a surrogate for direct ANS assessment. New methods of autonomic tension determination are still needed that would allow a more complete and reliable assessment. Reports of potential new laboratory markers of the ANS activity (NPY and VIP assay) bring some hope.

This research describes the working, benefits and challengers of polygraph tests. Polygraph tests are lie-detecting devices that help ascertain individuals’ honesty based on physiological indicators. The heart rate/blood pressure, respiration, and skin responses are the three indicators measured in the test to assess honest/deceitful behavior. The underlying assumption behind the working of polygraph tests is that the autonomic responses of dishonest individuals are distinctively different from those of honest people because the liars will be more nervous than truth tellers. Control Question Test (CQT), Guilty Knowledge Test (GKT) or Concealed Information Test (CIT) and Neuroscience-Based Advanced Polygraph Tests are the important types of polygraph tests used today. Polygraph tests are used to detect truthfulness of individuals in such important fields as crime investigation departments, national security agencies, and business and industry. However, accuracy of polygraph tests and ethical issues associated with the tests are highly debated.

In some patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), the causative agent of attack is stress (AF associated with adrenergic activity). In others, AF usually begins during relax or sleep (AF associated with vagal nerve dominance). This study aimed to investigate the individual factors associated with the adrenergic or vagal type of AF. This study included 138 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Sixty-eight patients reported that AF was frequently triggered by stress (sympathetic-type AF) and 70 patients reported that AF usually began during relaxation or sleep (vagal-type AF). Gender, age, ejection fraction, and temperament were compared across the two groups. Temperament was evaluated using the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory. The groups differed only in temperament. Patients with sympathetic-type AF had a higher score for emotional reactivity (p = 0.002) and perseverance (p = 0.002) temperament traits and a lower score for endurance (p = 0.003) than patients with vagal-type AF and than the average in population.

Introduction and objective. Aging is a process that also affects the autonomic nervous system (ANS) making it less adaptable to environmental and intrinsic stimuli and affecting its ability to maintain body homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the resting ANS function using heart rate variability (HRV) method and by noradrenaline measurement in aging, 2–12-months-old rats. Materials and method. Resting 15-minute-long ECG recordings were performed in anaesthetized rats with a subsequent spectral HRV analysis. Basic non-normalized HRV components in the range of very low (VLF), low (LF) and high (HF) frequency, along with the total HRV spectrum power (TP) were estimated. Moreover, normalized LF (nLF) and normalized HF (nHF) were calculated. Blood samples were also collected to assay plasma noradrenaline (NA) level. Results. In the overall assessment, plasma noradrenaline level as well as both TP and all non-normalized HRV components demonstrated a tendency for reduction when compared the first (2nd) and last (12th) months. In the case of nLF and nHF, a trend of nLF predominance in the 2nd and 3rd month was revealed while an inverse relation was observed from the 6th month on, with nHF superiority. Overall, males reached comparable or slightly higher NA and non-normalized HRV values compared to females, although most differences were not statistically significant. A parallel decline of LF (starting from the 10th month) and HF (from the 6th month) was demonstrated in both male and female animals. Female rats had a little more stable nLF and nHF course in the study time. Conclusions. Rat ANS aging is associated with global HRV decrease with parallel plasma NA decline, although without selective impairment of individual (sympathetic/parasympathetic) ANS components.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2 is a rare disorder caused by recessive mutations in the WNK1/HSN2 gene located on chromosome 12p13.33. Phenotype of the patients is characterized by severe sensory loss affecting all sensory modalities. We report a novel homozygous Lys179fsX182 (HSN2); Lys965fsX968 (WNK1/HSN2) mutation causing an early childhood onset hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2, with acromutilations in upper and lower limbs, and autonomic dysfunction. To the best of our knowledge this is the first genetically proven case of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2 originating from East Europe.

Introduction. Late complications of diabetes mellitus are a serious challenge for physicians treating diabetic patients. Micro- and macro-angiopathic changes are of the most severe sequels. However, it should be remembered that the effects of long-term diabetes are also associated with changes in the peripheral nervous system. One of the complications most troublesome for patients is diabetic autonomic neuropathy of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Objective. The review article presents the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy of the autonomous gastrointestinal tract, and advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The study used materials in the database which demonstrate current standards of conduct, based on the principles of EBM. Brief description of the state of knowledge. Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. According to epidemiologists, it affects 10% to even 100% of patients with long-standing disease. Damage to the nervous fibres mainly results from hyperglycaemia, which leads to the typical symptoms of dysfunction of GI tract segments. The main additional examinations include abdominal ultrasound (US) and abdominal X-ray. In cases with oesophageal disorders accompanied by dysphagia, gastroscopy is found useful for excluding possible neoplastic lesions. The gold standard for evaluation of gastric emptying is radioisotopic scintigraphy, however it is available only in some specialistic departments. Other recommended methods include: manometry, EGG, insulin tests, NMR and expiratory tests. To date, the problem has been managed symptomatically; in special cases, surgical interventions have been required. Conclusions. At present, a wide array of treatment options is available, including new forms of drugs and less radical surgical procedures carried out in numerous centres worldwide.

Opis:
In ethics much attention has already been paid to a dispute concerning the issue of autonomic ethics. Yet it is still worthy to look again at least at some of Tadeusz Kotarbiński's arguments. Their way of reasoning is being used today for defending the position of the autonomic ethics. The autonomic ethics proclaims a complete independence of the field of human morality from the realm of religion. If it is so then a polemic with Kotarbiński's views (which is led from the perspective of Christian ethics) will still be able to become a useful instrument in contemporary discussion with supporters of ethics independent from religion. For this reason the problem undertaken in this paper is still up-to-date. This problem can be summed up in the questions as follow: How to present Kotarbiński's arguments by which he justifies his thesis about the possibility of a law-abiding life on the high moral level without reference to the realm of religion? How can one argue with those arguments? Relying upon the analyzed texts by Kotarbiński and Styczeń mainly one can say that the differences between materialistic approach represented by the Student of Lvov-Warsaw School and views of personalistic ethics were shown. They show-up especially in the field of methodology of ethics and axiology. It is noticeable that the differences in views that cause the polemic cited and discussed in this article are based more on a variety of starting points. They are based also on goals of speculations that were undertaken by various ethicists and in groups of issues that should be the domain of ethics.

trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia
Opis:
Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias are a group of primary headache disorders presenting as unilateral pain in the somatic distribution of the trigeminal nerve, associated with ipsilateral cranial autonomic symptoms. This clinicopathologic group includes cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania, hemicrania continua and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing/cranial autonomic features, which differ mainly as regards the duration and frequency of pain as well as response to treatment. These disorders are not as rare as they were thought to be and due to the severity of the pain can substantially affect the patients’ quality of life. Many other forms of primary headaches, such as migraine, trigeminal neuralgia and primary stabbing headache, as well as secondary headaches, particularly those caused by pituitary, posterior fossa, orbital, paranasal sinus and vascular pathology, need to be carefully considered in the diagnosis of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Research in this field, particularly using functional neuroimaging, has resulted in a much better understanding of these disorders. Dysfunction in the nociceptive modulatory pathways in brain’s pain matrix is currently thought to produce a permissive state for the occurrence of a trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia attack, with posterior hypothalamus serving as a terminator rather than the generator of the attack. The current treatment strategies include medical and surgical approaches; of the latter, neuromodulation techniques, particularly deep brain stimulation of posterior hypothalamus, have proven to be particularly effective and promising.
Ta kliniczno-patologiczna grupa obejmuje klasterowy ból głowy, hemikranię napadową, hemikranię ciągłą i krótkotrwałe napady jednostronnego bólu głowy przypominającego nerwoból z przekrwieniem spojówek i łzawieniem/objawami autonomicznymi w obrębie czaszki.

Objectives Emotions and stress affect voice production. There are only a few reports in the literature on how changes in the autonomic nervous system affect voice production. The aim of this study was to examine emotions and measure stress reactions during a voice examination procedure, particularly changes in the muscles surrounding the larynx. Material and Methods The study material included 50 healthy volunteers (26 voice workers – opera singers, 24 control subjects), all without vocal complaints. All subjects had good voice quality in a perceptual assessment. The research procedure consisted of 4 parts: an ear, nose, and throat (ENT)‑phoniatric examination, surface electromyography, recording physiological indicators (heart rate and skin resistance) using a wearable wristband, and a psychological profile based on questionnaires. Results The results of the study demonstrated that there was a relationship between positive and negative emotions and stress reactions related to the voice examination procedure, as well as to the tone of the vocal tract muscles. There were significant correlations between measures describing the intensity of experienced emotions and vocal tract muscle maximum amplitude of the cricothyroid (CT) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles during phonation and non-phonation tasks. Subjects experiencing eustress (favorable stress response) had increased amplitude of submandibular and CT at rest and phonation. Subjects with high levels of negative emotions, revealed positive correlations with SCMmax during the glissando. The perception of positive and negative emotions caused different responses not only in the vocal tract but also in the vegetative system. Correlations were found between emotions and physiological parameters, most markedly in heart rate variability. A higher incidence of extreme emotions was observed in the professional group. Conclusions The activity of the vocal tract muscles depends on the type and intensity of the emotions and stress reactions. The perception of positive and negative emotions causes different responses in the vegetative system and the vocal tract.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the mechanism of cardiovascular impairments in workers exposed to UHF-VHF radio frequency electromagnetic fi elds (EMF). Materials and Methods: Heart rate variability (HRV) was analysed using 512 normal heart beats registered at rest. The analysis concerned time-domain (STD R-R) and frequencydomain (VLF, LF, HF) parameters of HRV. Fifty nine workers (group I) with low-level and 12 workers (group II) with highlevel exposure were examined. The mean age of the subjects was 47±9 years and 41±14 years, and mean exposure duration 19.1±8.8 years and 13±4 years, in groups I and II, respectively. The groups were divided according to: $\text{E}_\text{max}$, $\text{E}_\text{dose}$, $\text{E}_\text{mean}$ for frequencies UHF, VHF and UHF+VHF: The control group consisted of 42 non-exposed subjects, aged 49±8 years. Statistical analysis comprised one-way analysis of variance, covariance analysis and logistic regression models. Results: In the exposed groups, the heart rate was higher than in the control one. Standard deviation of R-R intervals (STD R-R) was found to be signifi cantly (p = 0.0285) lower in group I (42.5±24.7 ms) compared to the control group (62.9±53.5 ms). The risk of lowered STD R-R was signifi cantly increased (OR = 2.37, p = 0.023) in group II. Both exposed groups presented signifi cantly higher VLF and LF values than the control group (p = 0.005 and p = 0.0025, respectively). The EMF-exposed groups were characterised by the dominance of the sympathetic system (LF/HF 1.3±0.35). Conclusions: The results indicate that exposure to radiofrequency EMF may affect the neurovegetative regulation.

Objectives It is known that professional occupation affects the heart rate variability (HRV). However, most studies have not taken into account seasonal features of the HRV. The aim of this study has been to evaluate the HRV differences in winter and in summer in the case of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (EMERCOM) workers and scientific workers from the Komi Science Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Material and Methods The short-term HRV was examined for 13 EMERCOM workers and 13 scientific workers. The data was collected in winter (December) and summer (July) for the same groups of workers. The time domain and frequency domain HRV analyses were performed. The EMERCOM workers had more contact with the external environment than the scientific workers. Results The two-way analysis of variance with repeated observations on a single factor has shown that “Season” and interaction of two factors “Season” and “Profession” significantly influenced the HRV among volunteers. The “Profession” factor did not influence the HRV parameters (except for the heart rate in winter, p = 0.042). Seasonal changes in the HRV parameters were not significant in the case of scientific workers. In contrast, the EMERCOM workers showed significantly decreased parameters of parasympathetic activity (the root-mean-square of successive differences in RR intervals, percentage of consecutive RR intervals differing by > 50 ms and the relative value high frequency power, p = 0.001, p = 0.014 and p = 0.009, respectively) and increased parameters of sympathetic activity (the stress index and ratio of low-frequency power to high-frequency power, p = 0.012 and p = 0.006, respectively) in winter as compared to summer. Conclusions The results of our study indicate that, unlike the scientific workers, the EMERCOM workers showed significant changes in the HRV in contrasting seasons (winter and summer). The objective of the study is to attempt an evaluation of heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) regulatory mechanisms in the presence of autonomous nervous system (ANS) components in transient exposure to high altitude hypoxia. During 24 hrs including a stay in hypobaria, the participants had their HR continuously recorded using the Holter method. The following parameters were calculated at rest and during the stay in a thermobarochamber: spectral power in low frequency bands (LF) 0.04-0.15 Hz and high frequency bands (HF) 0.15-0.5 Hz, and the sympathetic-parasympathetic balance index LF/HF. Under hypobaric conditions, a decrease in mean spectral power of R-R intervals was noted within both frequency ranges, compared with the study performed in normobaria. The observed differences were larger at daytime.

As part of our research on ASSL, we have successfully specified autonomic properties, verified their consistency, and generated implementation for both the NASA ANTS (Autonomous Nano-Technology Swarm) concept mission and the NASA Voyager mission. This paper presents concrete results on the use of ASSL to develop a self-healing behavior model for NASA ANTS swarm-based exploration missions. Here, we present specification and implementation results. Moreover, we experiment with the ASSL-generated code to demonstrate that the implemented ANTS system is capable of self-management in respect of the specified self-healing model.

Opis:
Introduction: Research has shown that adults who stutter have reacted with increased skin conductance and lower heart rates when confronted with videos of severe stuttering compared to videos of fluent speech. It has not been clearly established how these physiological indices or autonomic arousals are related to stuttering attitudes. The current study sought to compare physiological and psychometric measures of anxiety with stuttering attitudes.Method: In a multiple-baseline design, 18 normal hearing university students listened to short samples of stuttered, masked, and normally fluent speech while their skin conductance and heart rate variability were being monitored by an Empatica E4 wristband device. Pre-experimentally and after each speech condition, they rated their comfort level on a 1–9 scale. Participants filled out the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI ) (Spielberger, 1977) prior to the physiological measures and the short state anxiety inventory afterwards. At the end, they filled out the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes–Stuttering (POSHA–S).Results: No significant main effects were observed for either autonomic measure for the three speech conditions, but interactions were significant. Individual participant analysis revealed that every respondent reacted differently to the skin conductance or heart rate variability. By contrast, mean subjective comfort ratings were more often lower after hearing stuttered or masked speech and higher after hearing fluent speech. Correlations between all the measures and the POSHA–S summary scores revealed little relationship between the autonomic measures and stuttering attitudes, but higher levels of state or trait anxiety were associated with more positive beliefs about people who stutter. In contrast, lower levels of anxiety tended to be associated with more positive self-reactions to those who stutter. Conclusion: This study did not replicate previous reports of heightened autonomic reactions to stuttering among nonstuttering adults, although psychometric measures suggest a relationship between anxiety and stuttering attitudes. Further research should explore these relationships, especially with young children.
Przed pomiarami fizjologicznymi uczestnicy wypełnili Inwentarz Stanu i Cechy Lęku (STAI) (Spielberger, 1977), a następnie krótki inwentarz lęku stanowego.
