Opis:
Humanistic management may be among the latest buzzwords, but the older generation maintains that it knew all about it all along. Some of them had practised it at the workplace. It is all about workplace dignity. By giving it a fancy name, Generation Z is only reinventing the wheel. Upon interaction with the respondents selected for the study, the researcher concludes that humanistic management can help reduce attrition and raise employee productivity. As a result, the employer can become more price-competitive and quality-competitive at the workplace. Thus, the outcome is a virtuous cycle of enhanced productivity, enhanced competitiveness and reduced training costs. But what piqued the curiosity of the researcher was why, to this day, humanistic management remains an exception and not the rule, across the employer community. This is because employers placed more faith in authoritative managers than in individual workers and group dynamics. They ignored interpersonal relationships. They failed to acknowledge the value of dignity in the economics and management space! This amounts to being wise to the penny and foolish to the pound. At best, it may lead the employee to churn out products at the same dreary pace for the rest of his/her work life. For all one knows, the employee concerned may be capable of delivering more but no thanks to absence of humanistic management, the employee concerned is seldom motivated to excel himself/herself at the workplace. Humanistic management dispels the notion that productivity level is the same across employees.

Opis:
Non-pathological language attrition has been thoroughly investigated in the context of first as well as second language (for review, see Bardovi-Harlig & Stringer, 2010; Schmid & Mehotcheva, 2012). However, still not enough is known about language attrition in a different population. Foreign language teachers, who often fight an uphill battle trying to prevent their learners’ lack of progress, may also face a different challenge. Namely, their own linguistic skills may regress as well. Therefore, the inquiry should be extended so as to include this population. As a result, in the present study we aim to investigate the extent to which FL teachers are aware of the phenomenon of language attrition. The diagnostic study was motivated by anecdotal evidence and frequent interactions with foreign language teachers. Our observations rested on the assumption that FL teachers may experience stagnation in the language they teach or may even be on the verge of language regression. 21 primary school non-native foreign language teachers (mean age 29) representing both rural and urban areas participated in the study. All participants had a B.A. in elementary education and were pursuing their M.A. in language teaching. In our pilot study, they were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire including both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The preliminary analysis reveals factors contributing to language loss among foreign language teachers and suggests future research directions.

While the number of higher education students doing paid work is increasing, there have been contradictory findings on the impact of student employment on student performance (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1998, Perna, 2010; Riggert et. al., 2006). Our study focuses on the impact of student employment on students’ careers and commitment in the Eastern Region of the European Higher Education Area. We used the PERSIST 2019 (N=2199) database. We assumed that paid work increases the chance of attrition and has a negative influence on commitment. Regarding commitment to one’s studies, there is no significant difference between working and non-working students, but, regardless of country, students who work regularly have much closer connections with faculty. They also get better results, which means that work related to one’s studies and keeping in contact with faculty have a positive effect on student performance.

The aim of the present study, set in the Polish-English context, is to discuss to what extent, if any, L1 competence (semantic, phraseological and grammatical) is influenced by the language contact, understood here as the (advanced) knowledge of L2, i.e. English. The research is based on the questionnaire consisting of 23 short excerpts taken from newspaper articles or texts published on the Internet, adapted by the author of the article. The texts in the questionnaire contain various kinds of borrowings and calques from English, such as semantic loans, loan translations (new phrases, collocations or idiomatic expressions) and grammatical constructions modelled on English. The questionnaire was given to two groups of informants: the main group (i.e. the bilingual one), consisting of 4th year students of English at the University of Silesia enrolled in the teaching programme, and the control group, consisting of students of various fields (excluding English or Polish studies) who declared limited knowledge of English. The respondents from both groups were given the questionnaire and their task was to read the sentences carefully and then to decide whether some words or phrases seemed incorrect or unnatural in a given context. The study has corroborated the view that language contact has some repercussions at the individual level: the knowledge of L2 may and does influence L1 competence. Not all the areas (semantic, phraseological and grammatical), however, are affected to an equal extent.

Since the 1970s, social psychology has investigated real human behavior to an increasingly smaller degree. The author of the article suggests that the phenomenon of cognitive revolution in psychology naturally boosted the interest of researchers in such phenomena like attitudes, values, social judgments and stereotypes; at the same time, it decreased interest in others important topics like aggression, social influence or altruism. In recent decades, we have also witnessed a growing conviction among social psychologists that explaining why people perform certain actions holds greater importance that demonstrating the conditions under which people really display particular reactions. The key question appears in this situation of whether social psychology remains of science of (real) behavior, and whether the current condiction of the discipline is desirable or rather pathological.

The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators - centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

In this work, the 316L austenitic steel based milled and sintered composites with 0.33 wt% and 1 wt% SiC ultra-fine particles addition have been prepared. The high efficient attrition milling provided an efficient size reduction of the 316L steel grains and homogeneous distribution of the SiC nanoparticles before sintering process. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) was used for compaction of milled powder mixtures. The effect of SiC addition on the milling efficiency and the structure of the composites have been studied. It was found that the amount of ceramic addition did not influence the efficiency of milling process, powder mixtures with flake like grains have been obtained. On the other hand, the intensive milling assured an optimal coverage of 316L stainless steel grains with submicron sized ceramic particles in both cases. The sintered composites showed high densities with the presence of small amount of closed porosities. Structural, mechanical and tribological examinations of 316L/SiC composites have been performed and presented.

Opis:
The long-term goal of foreign language (FL) learners is to reach communicative competence. The objective of language teachers is to assist and support learners in accomplishing this goal. However, the task may be challenging, especially, when considering foreign language taught in the context of instructed learning. The advent of new technologies, the emergence of learner-centered teaching, and the emphasis on authentic language do not always warrant a desirable outcome. Foreign language learners often reach a plateau and do not progress as expected. Loss of non-native language skills in the L1 environment, e.g. loss of foreign languages learned at school, is a fact. Foreign language learners may be prone to attrition due to insufficient input, low frequency of language use outside the classroom or lack of adequate motivation. Therefore, it is imperative to raise FL teachers’ awareness and draw their attention to the problem of language loss occurring in a formal context. Teachers should not only facilitate language learning but also prevent language forgetting which, if prolonged, may cease development and lead to attrition. By drawing attention to FL attrition, we aspire to bridge the gap between linguistic research and language classroom pedagogy. The aim of the current paper is to identify and discuss some of the instructional, cognitive, and personal factors contributing to foreign language attrition. Practical implications are discussed that could not only improve language teaching, but also influence more efficient, attrition-free curriculum design.

Massive open online courses, MOOCs, are a recent phenomenon that has achieved a tremendous media attention in the online education world. Certainly, the MOOCs have brought interest among the learners (given the number of enrolled learners in these courses). Nevertheless, the rate of dropout in MOOCs is very important. Indeed, a limited number of the enrolled learners complete their courses. The high dropout rate in MOOCs is perceived by the educator’s community as one of the most important problems. It’s related to diverse aspects, such as the motivation of the learners, their expectations and the lack of social interactions. However, to solve this problem, it is necessary to predict the likelihood of dropout in order to propose an appropriate intervention for learners at-risk of dropping out their courses. In this paper, we present a dropout predictor model based on a neural network algorithm and sentiment analysis feature that used the clickstream log and forum post data. Our model achieved an average AUC (Area under the curve) as high as 90% and the model with the feature of the learner’s sentiments analysis attained average increase in AUC of 0.5%.

The present study aims to investigate the attrition of English in English language teachers whose native language is Polish. It focuses on the attrition of more advanced vocabulary and structures which are taught in English Philology departments at universities, but which may not be necessary for teachers who teach at the lower levels of education and, as a consequence, they may be especially prone to attrition. At the same time, the study includes a questionnaire aiming to reveal the participants’ attitudes towards linguistic correctness and their strategies of language maintenance. As the results show, some attrition can indeed be observed, yet it must also be remarked that the teachers do try to maintain their proficiency levels in English by using the language in various ways, such as reading books and articles in English, watching films in English, talking to native speakers, etc.

Opis:
This article’s research question is to explore the role of sociolinguistic factors in combination with phonology-driven perception. The preliminary hypothesis is that sociolinguistic factors like bilingualism and L2 interference (attrition, as in de Leeuw, E., Chang, C. 2023) may have a decisive role in the process of sound perception and is based on the example of English-Czech/Slovak and English-Ukrainian loanword adaptation cases involving the phonemes /ɡ/, /h/, /ɦ/, and /x/: Czech and Slovak speakers adapt [h] as [ɦ] while Ukrainian speakers tend to adapt the same phoneme as [x] despite having /ɦ/ in their phonological inventory. This tendency seems to correlate with phonological attrition (L2 interference of Russian) and has been a topic of active discussions, especially so since the 2022 full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The research method is based on a questionnaire with audio samples containing both already existing and made-up proper names and words. Half of the test vocabulary units are designed to contain the chosen sounds, the rest of the units are represented by established, already existing, names, and units that do not contain the chosen sounds to provide a cover for the experiment. The respondents are asked to listen to the audio samples and write down the units as they hear them using Ukrainian alphabet. The respondents were provided with a fake description, and a fake goal of the experiment to exclude possible bias.
Przedstawiono im nieprawdziwy opis i cel eksperymentu, aby wykluczyć ewentualne uprzedzenia.
