Opis:
Lead is an important constituent widely used in different industrial processes. For evaluation of workers’ exposure to trace toxic metal of Pb (II), solid-phase extraction (SPE) was optimized. SPE using mini columns filled with XAD-4 resin was developed with regard to sample pH, ligand concentration, loading flow rate, elution solvent, sample volume, elution volume, the amount of resins, and sample matrix interferences. Lead ions were retained on a solid sorbent and then eluted, followed by a simple determination of analytes with flame atomic absorption spectrometery. The obtained recoveries of metal ions were greater than 92%. This method was validated with 3 different pools of spiked urine samples; it showed a good reproducibility over 6 consecutive days as well as 6 within-day experiments. This optimized method can be considered successful in simplifying sample preparation for a trace residue analysis of lead in different matrices when evaluating occupational and environmental exposures is required.

Opis:
Pylaisia polyantha moss growing near intensive traffic in Geležinis Vilkas street at Vingis Park (Vilnius) was selected as an indicator of environmental pollution. Two models were applied for the study: the Gaussian plume model – for zinc emission from automobiles calculation and mathematical model – for recalculating the zinc emission from transport to zinc concentration in moss. Moss samples were collected during spring, summer and autumn. There were no significant changes in Zn concentrations between these periods. Zn emission dispersion from pollution source was calculated only for one vehicle, in order to reach relationships between environmental conditions and dispersion of Zn emission from vehicle exhaust fumes pipe. It was detected that the concentration of Zn tends to decrease with the distance from the pollution source. It was observed that there was a strong relationship between wind speed and Zn concentration – the slower the wind speed, the higher concentration of zinc in moss.

Opis:
Background Manganese (Mn) used as raw material for melting process in the ferrous foundry is considered as hazardous neurotoxic substance because it accumulates in the central nervous system and may cause neurological disorders. The furnace-men and melting department workers are potentially exposed to manganese particles or fume in the workplace. The objective of the research has been to investigate the sources and levels of manganese exposure in the foundry by correlation of blood-manganese (B-Mn) and air-manganese (air-Mn) measurement. Material and Methods Air-Mn and Mn of blood serum were measured involving workers who worked in a big-sized foundry during 1 year. The standard method of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ID-121 was used for air and blood assessment and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was carried out for air and blood sample analysis. Results The air sampling results have revealed that there is a high exposure to manganese (4.5 mg/m3) in the workplace as compared to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) time weighted average (the reference time-weighted average (TWA) = 1 mg/m³). The average blood serum Mn concentration was 2.745 μg/l for subjects working for shorter than 3 months and 274.85 μg/l for subjects working 3–12 months. Conclusions Against the research hypothesis there was no correlation between the air-Mn concentration and the B-Mn (serum) level of manganese in the serum of the exposed subjects. It may be due to short time of air sampling of manganese airborne particles, and a real-time monitoring of airborne manganese particles is suggested for any future study. Med Pr 2017;68(4):449–458

Opis:
Background. Heavy metals are at present classified among the most important and dangerous water pollutants. Since over 15 years parasites have been used as a bioindicators of water pollution, e.g. using their ability to accumulate heavy metals. Concentration of four elements (Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu) in selected organs of the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and in the tissues of its parasite, plerocercoid of the tapeworm Triaenophorus nodulosus, was analysed. Material and methods. The fish were subject to full helminthological section, resulting in 66 tapeworm larvae isolated from cysts, located in the liver. Plerocecroids, gills, liver and intestine with duodenum were removed and frozen. Content of heavy metals was determined with atomic absorption spectroscopy method. Results. The distribution of the content of Ni, Cd and Zn was similar. In all cases, among all the examined fish organs, the highest mean concentration of the metals was found in the liver, followed by the intestine; it was the lowest in the gills. The mean concentration of the metals in the tapeworm tissues was from 6 to 74 x higher than in the gills, 5−37 x higher than in the intestine and 2.5−28 x higher than in the liver. The concentration of Cu was also the highest in the tapeworm tissues, but its concentration in the fish intestine and liver was nearly the same; it was the lowest in the gills.

Reactivity of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane with cellulose. The paper presents the results of tests for the reactivity of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMOS) with cellulose. The cellulose was treated with aqueous ethanolic solution of silane in two concentration: 5% and 20%. The reactivity of APTMOS with cellulose was analysed using instrumental methods: attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry and elemental analysis. In the FTIR spectra of silane-treated cellulose, the bands of Si-O, Si-C and N-H bonds were detected. The analysis of silicon and nitrogen concentration in treated cellulose confirmed the presence of silane in cellulose structure. The presented results indicate that APTMOS forms chemical bonds with cellulose.
Analiza stężenia krzemu i azotu w modyfikowanej celulozie potwierdziła obecność silanu w strukturze celulozy. Przedstawione wyniki wskazują, że APTMOS tworzy wiązania chemiczne z celulozą.

Organosilanes in wood protection – chemical analysis of wood and cellulose treated with MTMOS. The paper presents the results of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) reactivity with Scots pine wood and cellulose. The lignocellulosic material after treatment with ethanolic solution of MTMOS was analysed using instrumental methods – atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The analysis of silicon concentration in treated material indicated the presence of silane in structure of wood and cellulose. The bands characteristic of vibrations of the silicon-carbon and silicon-oxygen originating from MTMOS molecule were observed in the spectra of modified materials, which confirmed the reactivity of silane with wood and cellulose. Moreover, the chemical analysis indicated that MTMOS exhibited higher reactivity to cellulose than to pine wood.

Opis:
Determination of various elements in humic acids and soil samples is important with regard to their biological availability. This work was focused on the identification of trace elements presented in soil samples and humic acids preparates. The object of our study was the samples of grassland soil classified according to FAO as Eutric Cambisol (locality Vatín, Czech-Moravian Upland). Labile and total several element contents in the studied samples were determined. The labile forms were measured in the 0.01 M CaCl2 extract by using high resolution continuum source atomic absorption spectrometer. Total element contents were determined after extraction in aqua regia. Basic soil properties were measured by commonly used methods - soil reaction and conductivity by potentiometric method, texture by pipette method, CEC according to Kappen method and Cox by titrimetric oxidation. Soil humic acids (HA) were isolated according to standard IHSS method. Elemental composition of HA was determined by CHSN/O analyzer. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy allowed us to detect elements in situ in HA molecule and following elements were found: Fe, Cu, Zn, Ti, Ca, K, S, P, Si and Br. The presence of mentioned elements in humic acids preparates was compared with the determined amounts of labile forms and total contents in the soil samples.
