    Opis:
    Assisted living applications are commonly understood as technical environment for disabled or elderly people providing the care in the user-specific range. We are going to present the data capture methodology and design of a home care system for medical-based surveillance and man-machine communication. The proposed system consists of the video-based subject positioning, monitoring of the heart and brain electrical activity and eye tracking. The multimodal data are automatically interpreted and translated to tokens representing subject's status or command. The circadian repetitive status time series (behavioral patterns) are a background for learning of the subject's habits and for automatic detection of unusual behavior or emergency. Due to mutual compatibility of methods and data redundancy, the use of unified status description vouches for high reliability of the recognition despite the use of simplified measurements methods. This surveillance system is designed for everyday use in home care, by disabled or elderly people.

    Localization systems are an important component of Active and Assisted Living (AAL) platforms supporting persons with cognitive impairments. The paper presents a positioning system being a part of the platform developed within the IONIS European project. The system’s main function is providing the platform with data on user mobility and localization, which would be used to analyze his/her behavior and detect dementia wandering symptoms. An additional function of the system is localization of items, which are frequently misplaced by dementia sufferers. The paper includes a brief description of system’sarchitecture, design of anchor nodes and tags and exchange of data between devices.both localization algorithms for user and item positioning are also presented. Exemplary results illustrating the system’s capabilities are also included.

    Opis:
    Assisted living institutions such as nursing homes were established to answer a vital social need. Such services are needed by the elderly, disabled, and chronically ill. The social demand for these institutions is growing due to a deficit of care functions in families, among other factors. Undoubtedly, assisted living institutions play a vital role by providing help and assistance to less-independent individuals, and for many, they are a chance for survival or a dignified life because they offer food and shelter. However, nursing homes as assisted living institutions are not limited to satisfying the needs of their residents. There is something surprising and worrying about their functioning. To use R.K. Merton’s terminology, they operate according to latent functions that maintain social order and social control. To better understand the problem, it is worth looking at Erving Goffman’s popular theory of total institutions and Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory.

    Opis:
    This paper presents a new method for detection of changes in alignment of the human body, particularly the fall, on the basis of signals acquired from the position sensors placed on the body of the monitored person. The sensors are located on the cuffs, waist and chest. Transformation of data sequence collected from sensors is proposed in order to best distinguish between the collapse from the normal movement. It is based on nonlinear combination of the first two derivatives of the signals being read. Because data from the sensors is sent asynchronously, a numerical algorithm for unevenly sampled data differentiation is proposed. Derivative values are calculated in equidistant nodes through differentiation of a polynomial, which is adjusted by minimizing the mean square error. The developed method can be used in home care telemedicine systems, where it is necessary to long term monitor of multiple vital parameters of people under care.

    Opis:
    This paper brings up the issue of population aging and its influence on designing and construction of buildings in Poland. It also touches the problem of adaptation of existing facilities to the needs of the elderly and the disabled. Moreover, current trends in Polish demographics and possible outlook for the next 45 years has been presented. The author presents the current legal state concerning rules and regulations on the aspects of adjusting the buildings and their parts to the needs of the disabled. Additionally, the dimensions and the areas of movement for the disabled as well as the primary functional and requirements for bathrooms have been described. In the next paragraph, a concept of Ambient Assisted Living with examples of sanitary equipment for use in residential buildings has been propose.
    Niniejszy artykuł porusza zagadnienie procesu starzenie się społeczeństwa i wpływu tego zjawiska na projektowanie i wykonywanie obiektów budowlanych w Polsce oraz adaptacje obecnie istniejących budynków dla potrzeb osób niepełnosprawnych i starszych.

    The main goal of the article is to analyse the key elements of the living will in Italy and present the dispute regarding the understanding of the conscience clause of healthcare professionals. In the country on the Tiber, a law on the living will was passed in 2017. A living will consists in the anticipatory expression of ‘will’, by an adult or legal guardian acting in full possession of their mental faculties, concerning the possible administration or discontinuation of certain medical therapies in the future. The conscience clause, on the other hand, means the right to refuse to take such actions, which a particular person considers to be contrary to their personal convictions. The Italian law on the living will does not contain a provision on the conscience clause. For this reason, an ethical and legal problem arose for healthcare professionals, who refused to comply with the wishes of their patients for moral or religious reasons, for example by discontinuing artificial hydration or nutrition,  thus, leading to the patient’s death. The ethical and legal dispute in Italy is part of a contemporary global debate on conscience clauses, euthanasia, assisted suicide, human rights, and the dignity of human life. Analyses have shown that healthcare professionals should be guaranteed the right, not to perform such medical procedures, which are contrary to their moral and religious convictions.
    Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza najważniejszych elementów testamentu życia we Włoszech oraz prezentacja sporu dotyczącego klauzuli sumienia pracowników służby zdrowia. W kraju nad Tybrem ustawa dotycząca testamentu życia została uchwalona w 2017 r. Testament życia polega na antycypującym wyrażeniu woli przez osobę pełnoletnią lub opiekuna prawnego, dokonanym w warunkach pełnej przytomności umysłowej, dotyczącym ewentualnego podjęcia lub zaniechania w przyszłości różnego rodzaju terapii medycznych. Z kolei klauzula sumienia oznacza prawo do odmowy podjęcia tych działań, które konkretny człowiek uznaje za niezgodne z własnymi przekonaniami światopoglądowymi. Włoska ustawa o testamencie życia nie zawiera zapisu o klauzuli sumienia. Z tego powodu powstał problem etyczno-prawny dotyczący personelu medycznego, który z racji moralnych czy religijnych nie chce spełniać życzenia pacjentów, aby zaprzestać m.in. sztucznego nawadniania i karmienia, doprowadzając w ten sposób do ich śmierci. Włoski spór etyczno-prawny stanowi część współczesnej debaty o charakterze globalnym, dotyczącej klauzuli sumienia, eutanazji, samobójstwa wspomaganego, praw człowieka i godności życia ludzkiego. Przeprowadzone analizy wykazały, że pracownicy służby zdrowia powinni mieć zagwarantowane prawo do niepodejmowania tych zabiegów medycznych, które są sprzeczne z ich przekonaniami moralnymi i religijnymi.
