Opis:
In my paper I consider the question, whether one can reconcile radical apophatic perspective with the realistic interpretation of religious discourse. Both are supported by very important religious intuitions, but seem to be mutually inconsistent. In order to show what form of “apophatic realism” is possible to hold, I analyze the thought of Nicolas of Cusa: fifteenth century mystic and philosopher, whose thought does justice to the deepest religious intuitions and can be inspiring, and – in its basic principles – also tenable, even in XXI century.

Opis:
In contemporary art, seemingly far from religious or faith-related affiliations, one can find many theological tropes: hidden values, symbols and motifs. Being focused on existential issues, touching upon the problems of suffering, dying, longing and love, theatre is still open to getting engaged in a dialogue with theology. Piotr Cieplak, one of the contemporary theatre directors that is worthy of greater attention, uses the language of “verging realities”, i.e. in his performances, he refers to the notions from the realm of theology. He is interested in such issues as faith, doubt, trust, hope and salvation. One of Cieplak’s inspirations at work is the thought of Tomasz Halik, an outstanding Czech theologian. His deliberations contained in the book Cierpliwość wobec Boga (Patience With God) can be a key to interpreting “Somkowy kapelusz” performance. This French farce dressed with T.S. Elliot’s poetry and read through the theological lens of Tomasz Halik becomes a story of patient waiting for an unnamed mystery. Here, Cieplak refers to the apophatic theology where God is described as the presence of Absence, a being impossible to embrace or label in any way. From this perspective, “Słomkowy kapelusz” is a story of a man who knows that he is an actor in the big theatre of the world, who believes, doubts, ask questions, longs but is unshakably waiting on the threshold of the mystery.

Opis:
In my article I present a conceptual model of classification of philosophical and theological conceptions of religion within Western philosophy and the Christian religious tradition. The model has four independent dimensions: the factual, the metaphysical, the ethical and the apophatic. The first and the second dimensions are cognitive, while the third and the fourth are non-cognitive. The fourth dimension should not be identified with the old tradition of apophatic theology because, according to the model, the latter is a mixture of two (or even more) dimensions. The second part of my paper is devoted to the Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion developed by the members of the so-called Swansea School. My thesis is that, despite of their self-characterisation as philosophers, they present an extreme version of apophatic theology because their view on religion is, in the light of my conceptual model, one-dimensional.

Opis:
This paper discusses the theoretical relationship between the views of Damascius and those of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. While Damascius’ De principiis is a bold treatise devoted to investigating the hypermetaphysics of apophatism, it anticipates various theoretical positions put forward by Dionysius the Areopagite. The present paper focuses on the following. First, Damascius is the only ancient philosopher who systematically demonstrates the first principle to be infinite (traditional Greek thought tended to regard the arkhē as finite). Second, Damascius modifies the concept and in several important passages shows the infinite to be superior and prior to the finite (previously this assumption was held only by Melissus and, sporadically, by Gregory of Nyssa and Plotinus). Third, Damascius’ theory of being (infinite, endless and ultrarational) is the strongest ancient articulation of the nature of the One which is a clear prefiguration of the negative theology developed by Dionysius the Areopagite.
