The casting processes using mechanical stirring of composite suspension are considered for the most economical methods for manufacturing of metal matrix composites in the application and industrial practice. The most common problems during the composite suspensions production include: weak wetting between liquid Al alloy and ceramic particles and gassing of composite mixtures resulting with introducing the particles into aluminium alloy and long-term stirring process. The agglomerates and clusters of particles created among others as an effect of gas blisters absorption on the surface of ceramics causes discontinuity of composite structure and thereby they reduce properties of final products. The porosity has disadvantageous effect on mechanical properties of products, it reduces the corrosion and wear resistance, particularly under technically dry friction conditions. Therefore, to produced the casts composite possessed optimal properties, it is necessary their minimal porosity. To obtaining a good high-quality castings, the proper selection of components, particularly the chemical composition of the Al matrix and the kind of reinforcement are necessary. In this paper, the effect of chemical composition of the matrix on AlSi/SiCp+Cp composite structure were presented.

The possible options as materials for protective layers are aluminium foams which become also very popular due to their lightweight and excellent plastic energy absorbing properties. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry with continued research to further understandfoam properties. Compressed foaming materials exhibit extensive plastic response, while the initial elastic region is limited in tension by a tensile brittle-failure stress. Aluminium foams have become an attractive material as blast protective layers due to their desirable compressive properties. With different material engineering techniques (as, for example double-layer foam cladding) they can be customized to achieve the most desirable properties. Energy absorption capacity of foams under blast load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model. Initial research indicates that energy absorbed by the cladding is much larger than that under quasi-static conditions due to shock wave effect. The methods of numerical modellingfor open and closed cell aluminium foams arepresented in the paper. The numerical models of foam ideal microstructures created with shell and together shell and beam finite elements are shown. The models were developed on the basis of Kelvin tetrakaidecahedrons - structures consisting of six sąuares and eight hexagons. In the case of open cell foams the circle wholes were removed from polyhedron surfaces. Then the numerical analysis o f a created models compressive test was carried out with the usage of MSC.Marc computer code. The nonlinear procedur es were applied. The results were analyzed in the scope of the assessing the behaviour of the open cell aluminium foam unit cell under the compressive load.

The parameters of heat treatment of Al-Zn-Mg alloys subjected to precipitation hardening have a substantial impact on mechanical and corrosion resistance. The rate of cooling after supersaturation, along with the ageing temperature and time, affect significantly mechanical properties of these alloys. The type of ageing (artificial or natural) after saturation implies corrosion resistance in seawater. Being a modification of the AlZn5Mg1 alloy, denoted as PA47, the AlZn5Mg2CrZr alloy reveals best mechanical properties among all aluminium alloys in shipbuilding [1]. However, the higher level of precipitation hardening, the higher susceptibility to corrosion, in particular to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Describing the structure of Al-Zn-Mg alloys by identifying the precipitation free zone (PFZ) and the Guinier-Preston (G-P) zones provides the information on the corrosion resistance of these alloys.

The structure of EN AW 6082 aluminium alloy is investigated in this paper. Atom force microscopy (AFM) is used to identify present phases and their morphology. AFM enabled to observe even the precipitates, their size and distribution. In the next step, some structure constituent described by AFM were evaluated by the nanoindentation process to determine their local mechanical properties, such as nanohardness and reduced modulus.
W artykule opisano strukturę stopu aluminium AW 6082. Mikroskopia sił atomowych (AFM) służy do identyfikacji obecnych faz i ich morfologii. AFM umożliwił obserwację nawet wtrąceń, ich wielkości i rozmieszczenia. W następnym etapie niektóre składniki struktury opisane przez AFM zostały ocenione w procesie nanoindentacji w celu określenia ich lokalnych właściwości mechanicznych, takich jak nanotwardość i zredukowany moduł.

The article presents research aimed at determining the effect of adding rare earth elements to near-eutectic Al-Si and Al-Si-Ni alloys on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the obtained products. Material for the research was prepared using a melt spinner - a device used for rapid crystallization, casting thin ribbons, which were then subjected in subsequent stages to fragmentation, consolidation and plastic working. The ribbons and extruded rods cast were described in terms of their structure and their strength properties were determined at different measurement temperatures. It was shown that the lightweight materials produced from aluminium alloys using the rapid solidification process have an ultra-fine structure and good strength properties. Analysis under a microscope confirmed that the addition of rare earth alloys Al-Si and Al-Si-Ni causes fragmentation of the microstructure in the tapes produced. The presence of rare earth elements in the alloys tested has an impact on the type and the morphology of the particles of the microstructure’s individual components. In addition to the change in particle morphology, the phenomenon of the separation of numerous nanometric particles of intermetallic phases containing rare earth elements was also observed. The change in microstructure caused by the addition of rare earth elements in the form of a mischmetal increases the mechanical properties.

Opis:
Occupants protection during vehicle crash is one of the major problems considered at vehicle designing stage. The increasing safety as well as comfort requirements results in the total vehicle weight increase. On the other hand, higher mass influence on the fuel economy of vehicle. Thus, it is very important to maintain or even reduce vehicle weight. One of the solutions of this problem is application of a new materials having good strength-to-weight ratio i.e. high strength steels (HSS). They are often used in protective and energy absorbing structures in automotive industry. One of HSS so-called austenitic steels are characterized by excellent mechanical properties such as: high strength, strong strain, and strain rate hardening. Those mechanical effects are consequence of microstructural evolution during strong deformations i.e. twinning and phase transformation. As a consequence those steels are very good material for the purposes of energy absorbing and protective structures. This article presents the results of mechanical properties tests of VP159 austenitic steel. On the basis of experimental data, the JC constitutive model has been calibrated. The obtained results were used for the computer simulations of energy absorbing of square profiles made of analysed material. The results were compared with other types of steel.

The article presents the results of numerical analysis whose aim was to compare the basic dynamic and strength parameters of lightweight load-carrying crane structures made of aluminium alloys and steel. The analysis covered the typical construction of workshop cranes with a span of 3 to 5 meters, girders in the form of an I-beam and maximum load capacities amounting to 5 tons. The values of stresses, deflections and natural frequencies were compared and then matched with the masses of the various structures. In the simulation a girder model was used and computed by the finite element method.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy numerycznej, której celem było porównanie podstawowych parametrów dynamicznych i wytrzymałościowych ustrojów nośnych lekkich suwnic wykonanych z aluminium i stali. Analizie poddano typowe konstrukcje suwnic warsztatowych o rozpiętości od 3 do 5 metrów, o dźwigarach w postaci dwuteownika i maksymalnych udźwigach wynoszących 5 ton. Porównywano wartości naprężeń, ugięć i częstotliwości drgań własnych, a następnie zestawiono je z masami poszczególnych ustrojów. W symulacji wykorzystano model dźwigara obliczany z wykorzystaniem metody elementów skończonych.

The aim of the studies described in this article was to present the effect of rare earth elements on aluminium alloys produced by an unconventional casting technique. The article gives characteristics of the thin strip of Al-Si-RE alloy produced by Rapid Solidification (RS). The effect of rare earth elements on structure refinement, i.e. on the size of near-eutectic crystallites in an aluminium–silicon alloy, was discussed. To determine the size of crystallites, the Scherrer X-ray diffraction method was used. The results presented capture relationships showing the effect of variable casting parameters and chemical composition on microstructure of the examined alloys. Rapid Solidification applied to Al-Si alloys with the addition of mischmetal (Ce, La, Ne, Pr) refines their structure.
Celem badań opisanych w artykule było przedstawienie wpływu pierwiastków metali ziem rzadkich na stopy aluminium otrzymywane niekonwencjonalną metodą odlewniczą. W artykule scharakteryzowano cienką taśmę ze stopu Al-Si-RE wytworzoną metodą szybkiej krystalizacji (Rapid Solidification). Przedstawiono wpływ pierwiastków metali ziem rzadkich na rozdrobnienie struktury - wielkość krystalitów okołoeutektycznego stopu aluminium - krzem. Do oznaczenia wielkości krystalitów wykorzystano rentgenowską dyfrakcyjną metodę Scherrera. Zaprezentowane wyniki ujmują zależności zmiennych parametrów odlewania i składu chemicznego na mikrostrukturę badanych stopów. Zastosowanie szybkiej krystalizacji dla stopów Al-Si z dodatkiem miszmetalu (Ce, La, Ne, Pr) powoduje rozdrobnienie ich struktury.

This paper presents the results of experimental research on the fabrication of thin-walled panels with longitudinal stiffening ribs by the single point incremental sheet forming technique. The bead-stiffened panels were made of Alclad 2024-T3 aluminium alloy sheets commonly used in aircraft structures. The influence of forming parameters and tool strategy on surface quality and the possibility of obtaining stiffening ribs with the required profile and depth was tested through experimental research. Two tool path strategies, spiral with continuous sinking and multi-step z-level contouring, were considered. The results of the experiments were used to verify the finite element-based numerical simulations of the incremental forming process. It was found that the main parameter which influences the formability of test sheets is the tool path strategy; the tool path strategy with multi-step z-level contouring allowed the rib to be formed to a depth of 3.53 mm without risk of cracking. However a greater depth of rib equal of 5.56 mm was achieved with the continuous tool path. The tool path strategy was also the main parameter influencing the surface finish of the drawpiece during the single point incremental forming process.

Opis:
The paper deals with squeeze casting technology. For this research a direct squeeze casting method has been chosen. As an experimental material, the AlSi12 and AlSi7Mg0.3 alloys were used. The influence of process parameters variation (pouring temperature, mold temperature) on mechanical properties and structure will be observed. For the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy, a pressure of 30 MPa was used and for the AlSi12 alloy 50 MPa. The thicknesses of the individual walls were selected based on the use of preferred numbers and series of preferred numbers (STN ISO 17) with the sequence of 3.15 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6.3 mm and 8 mm. The width of each wall was 22 mm and length 100 mm. The mechanical properties (Rm, A5) for individual casting parameters and their individual areas of different thicknesses were evaluated. For the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy, the percentage increase of the tensile strength was up to 37% and the elongation by 400% (at the 8 mm thickness of the casting). For the AlSi12 alloy, the strength increased from 8 to 20% and the tensile strength increased from 5 to 85%. The minimum thickness of the wall to influence the casting properties by pressure was set to 5 mm (based on the used casting parameters). Due to the effect of the pressure during crystallization, a considerable refinement and uniformity of the casting structure occured, also a reduction in the size of the eutectic silicate-eliminated needles was observed.

Opis:
Since welding technology is currently used to assemble the frame of driver’s seats, it is important to develop laser welding technology for steel and aluminium. For this reason, the purpose of the present work was to examine the structure and selected properties of aluminium-steel joints using the example of an EN AW-6060 aluminium alloy and DC04 low-alloy steel welded in laser technology. Overlapping joints were made, weld type -following the hole laser welding method -laser beam (LB) using a high power disk laser (TRUMPF TruDisk3302), in which the active medium is a yttrium-aluminium crystal (YAG). Metallographic microstructure investigations were carried out using a light microscope from Carl Zeiss - Observer Z1m, and the weld microstructures were investigated using an SEM Supra 35 microscope, also from Carl Zeiss. The chemical composition analysis in micro-areas was carried out using an X-ray energy dispersion spectrometer from EDAX, which was a part of the SEM Supra 35. The hardness of the substrate material and the welded area was measured following the Vickers method using an FM-ARS 9000 micro hardness tester from Tokyo, Japan. It was found that there is a potential for commercial use of laser welding to make a low-carbon steel-aluminium alloy joint. During the formation of the weld in its microstructure, intermetallic compounds of the FexAly type were created, which significantly reduced the mechanical and plastic properties of the joint. The hardness of the weld created wasabout seven times higher than that of DC04 carbon steel. The choice of laser welding parameters (primarily, laser power and beam speed) significantly impacted the weld structure and properties.

Calorimetric and dilatometric tests were performed on AA7075 aluminum alloy annealed at constant heating rate of 15 degree Celsjus/min in temperature range 20-470 degree Celsjus and discussed in relation to the hardness test and structure observation results. The samples were machined from furnace cooled material (FC), furnace cooled and deformed (FCD) material, solution treated (ST) material and solution treated and deformed (STD) material. It was found that the nucleation and growth of transition η and stable η (MgZn2) phases caused remarkable reduction of thermal expansion coefficient αt , whereas both the dissolution of phase and formation of GP zones were accompanied by an increase of αt value. While η phase started to dissolve at 250 degree Celsjus, a widespread endothermic effect was observed on DSC curves. Dissolution of η particles at high annealing temperatures was accompanied by the solid solution hardening of the alloy. Mentioned hardening process was overlapped by expected material softening that was ascribed to recovery and recrystallization processes. Because of superposition the solution hardening and recrystallization softening, recrystallization temperature could not be precisely defined on the basis of simple hardness measurements.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań kalorymetrycznych, dylatometrycznych i pomiarów twardości stopu aluminium AA7075 poddanego nieizotermicznemu wyżarzaniu (nagrzewaniu ze stała prędkością) w zakresie temperatur 20-470 stopni Celsjusza. Badania objęły cztery stany metalurgiczne materiału: wolno studzony z piecem (FC), wolno studzony z piecem i odkształcony (FCD), przesycony (ST) oraz przesycony i odkształcony (STD). Stwierdzono, ze wydzielanie fazy pośredniej η' i równowagowej η(MgZn2) powoduje wyraźne obniżenie współczynnika rozszerzalności cieplnej αt , natomiast zarówno rozpuszczanie fazy η, jak i formowanie stref GP prowadzi do jego wzrostu. Rozpuszczanie fazy η rozpoczyna sie w temperaturze 250 stopni Celsjusza i towarzyszy mu rozległy efekt endotermiczny, a w zaawansowanym stadium rozpuszczania η także wzrost twardości przesycanych próbek, będący rezultatem umocnienia roztworowego stopu. Umocnienie roztworowe zakłóca tym samym efekt oczekiwanego mięknięcia materiału wskutek rekrystalizacji, co w konsekwencji utrudnia dokładna ocenę temperaturowego zakresu rekrystalizacji w oparciu o pomiary twardości.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to perform adequate selection of the phase composition of the composite designated for permanent - mould casting air compressor pistons. The hybrid composites based on AlSi7Mg matrix alloy reinforced with mixture of silicon carbide (SiC) and glassy carbon (Cg) particles were fabricated by the stir casting method. It has been shown that the proper selection of chemical composition of matrix alloy and its modification by used magnesium and strontium additions gives possibility to obtain both the advantageous casting properties of composite suspensions as well as good bonding between particles reinforcements and matrix.

Opis:
Roots of radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. radicula Pers.) of Rowa cv. seedlings grown in water cultures (pH 4.3) have been tested. Aluminum as AlCl₃·6H₂O has been applied at 0, 10, 20 and 40 mg·dm⁻³ concentrations. Inhibition of the growth of root elongation and the following changes of root morphology have been observed after aluminum treatment: browning and thickening, root cap elongation or falling off, bending of the apex root and cracks on its surface. Roots have been characterized with the change of hair length and lateral zones. First lateral roots occurred closer to the basal root apex than first hair. Reduction of hair length was noticed too. Atrophy of outer root tissues has been accompanied by great enlargement of cortex cells size as a result of their hypertrophy.
Badano korzenie siewek rzodkiewki ‘Rowa’ (Raphanus sativus L. Var. radicula Pers.) hodowanych w kulturach wodnych o pH 4,3. Glin zastosowano w stężeniach: 0, 10, 20 i 40 mg·dm⁻³ w formie AlCl₃·6H₂O. W obecności glinu obserwowano inhibicję wzrostu elongacyjnego korzeni oraz zmiany w ich morfologii: brązowienie, wydłużanie się lub odpadanie czapeczki, zaginanie się szczytowego odcinka korzenia oraz spękania na jego powierzchni. Korzenie o znacznie powiększonej średnicy odznaczały się zmianą długości i układu stref korzeniowych: włośnikowej i korzeni bocznych oraz redukcją długości włośników. Obumieraniu tkanek obwodowej strefy korzenia towarzyszyło znaczne powiększenie rozmiarów komórek kory w wyniku ich hipertrofii.
