In the paper, the problems of adhesive layer effort was considered. The experimental tests of adhesives bonds were conducted in order to determine breaking loads. A technique a finite element mesh of adhesive layer subjected to shearing was proposed. Next the numerical calculations were conducted in order to determine distribution of stresses in adhesive layers at breaking loads. The components of stress tensor were used for the analytical calculations of reduced stresses according to seven hypotheses. It was found out that the maximal principal positive stresses hypothesis, the maximum principal strain hypothesis and the strain energy hypothesis make possible to estimate the adhesive layer effort with similar accuracy. Shape and the dimensions of the steel (S355J2G3) single lap specimen, the compression curves for Araldite AW 136H, the maximal principal stress values in the most loaded element of the adhesive layer depending on the elements' dimensions, modelling versions of the tree-layer adhesive layer's edges, distribution of the maximal principal stresses along edge section, comparison of the maximal principal stress distribution along adhesive layer's length, the stress-strain curve for Belzona 1111 adhesive and for Epidian57/Z1 adhesive, distribution of maximum principal stresses in adhesive layer of single lap bond subjected to shearing, are presented in the paper.

This paper discusses the influence of cold working to energy conditions of the surface layer of steel 15; it is evaluated with the use of free surface energy calculated (with polar-dispersive method) on the basis of wetting angle measurements. The samples subjected to such working method were also subjected to scuffing resistance tests performed on the pair of counter-samples made of steel 45. In the paper procedure of scuffing was described. Moreover, the methods of results evaluation were put. The tests were carried out in lubricating conditions of different mechanisms of interaction with the lubricated surface. They found out that the free surface energy increase influenced the scuffing resistance decrease for the pairs lubricated with surface non-active substances. However, the resistance increased for the pair lubricated with substances reacting chemically with the surface. In the paper example of test results, average valves of free surface energy were presented. The obtained tests results were verified by the comparison with the results of the experiment where the surface layer energy conditions were evaluated with the use of Auger electron spectroscopy. Changes with coldplastic work to the surface layer can prepare it to co-operation with active lubricants and thus increase its adhesive scuffing resistance.

This work presents the results of comparative tests for the determination of Young’s modulus and the static shear strength of adhesive lap joints, based on grade 316L steel. The tests also concerned the determination of the glass transition temperature of a certain adhesive composition: Epidian 57 epoxy resin with a 10% Z1 hardener content. The paper shows the test results for the surface free energy and selected surface roughness parameters, including photographs of the test specimens after destructive testing. The tests were comparative and performed on adhesive joints, with and without exposure to thermal cycling. The scope of the testing included a relatively short thermal cycling run of 500 cycles with a temperature variation of -40°C to +60°C. An analysis was carried out of the results from testing the static shear resistance of specimens manufactured using various methods of adhesive joint seasoning. The experimental test results were statistically processed in compliance with good research practice.
