Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to examine both the fatigue behaviour and the phase transition mechanisms of an equiatomic pseudo-elastic NiTi Shape Memory Alloy through cyclic tests (up to 100 loading cycles). More precisely, miniaturised dog-bone specimens are tested by using a customised testing machine and the contents of both austenite and martensite phase are experimentally measured by means of X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. On the basis of such experimental results in terms of martensite content, an analytical model is here formulated to correlate the stress-strain relationship to the phase transition mechanisms. Finally, a validation of the present model by means of experimental data pertaining the stress-strain relationship is performed.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper explains mechanical synthesis which uses powders or material chunks in order to obtain phases and alloys. It is based on an example of magnesium powders with various additives, such as zinc, calcium and yttrium. Design/methodology/approach: The following experimental techniques were used: X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), determining particle size distributions with laser measuring, Vickers microhardness. Findings: The particle-size of a powder and microhardness value depend on the milling time. Research limitations/implications: Magnesium gained its largest application area by creating alloys in combination with other elements. Magnesium alloys used in various industry contain various elements e.g. rare-earth elements (REE). Magnesium alloys are generally made by casting processes. Consequently, the search for new methods of obtaining materials such as mechanical alloying (MA) offers new opportunities. The MA allows for the production of materials with completely new physico-chemical properties. Originality/value: Thanks to powder engineering it is possible to manufacture materials with specific chemical composition. These materials are characterized by very high purity, specified porosity, fine-grain structure, complicated designs. These are impossible to obtain with traditional methods. Moreover it is possible to refine the process even further minimalizing the need for finishing or machining, making the material losses very small or negligible. Furthermore material manufactured in such a way can be thermally or chemically processed without any problems.

Opis:
This paper reports the results of X-ray diffraction quantitative mineralogical studies of the clay-rich Middle Jurassic sedimentary rocks from Gnaszyn, central Poland and their palaeoenvironmental interpretation. The palaeoenvironmental interpretation is aided by the fact that the sediments have not been significantly altered by diagenesis. The mineral composition is uniform throughout the succession: quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, calcite, gypsum, anhydrite, pyrite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and glauconite. The clay assemblage is dominated by illite, which alone accounts for about 20 wt% of the total mineral content. Kaolinite amounts usually <10 wt% and chlorite and glauconite occur in subordinate quantities. The clay mineral assemblage is largely of detrital origin and indicates rather cool and/or dry climatic conditions favouring mechanical erosion of the source rocks.

Opis:
An attempt was made to determine phase composition of commercial aluminium alloys using X-ray diffraction. Samples for phase composition analysis were selected from the group of aluminium alloys covered by the EN 573-3:2013 standard [1]. Representative samples were taken from eight groups of alloys with different chemical composition (at least one sample from each group). The diffraction intensity was measured with a standard X-ray diffractometer in Bragg-Brentano geometry in a way that allowed identification of the weakest diffraction peaks. As a results of the performed research it has been shown that X-ray phase analysis can be used to identify the matrix of aluminium alloys, Si and crystalline intermetallic phases such as Mg2Si, Al93.38Cu6.02Fe24Si16.27, Al4.01MnSi0.74, MgZn2, Al17 (Fe3.2Mn0.8)Si2, Al65Cu20Fe15, and Cu3Mn2Al. The detectability limit of the above-mentioned phases is better than 0.5%. The research has also shown that X-ray phase analysis is applicable in the investigation of phase transformations taking place in aluminium alloys.

The thermal decomposition of supergene potassium-jarosite and sodium-jarosite samples from the weathering profiles of sulfide deposits in the northern Tibetan Plateau, China, was investigated. Electron microprobe, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses indicated the presence of nearly pure potassium-jarosite and sodium-jarosite. Thermogravimetric analysis of the potassium-jarosite sample revealed mass losses of 11.39 wt% at 443.0 °C, 20.99 wt% at 688.3 °C, and 3.18 wt% at 779.3 °C. The thermogravimetric analysis of sodium-jarosite revealed mass losses of 11.72 wt% at 447.5 °C, 21.32 wt% at 682.6 °C, and 3.70 wt% at 716.5 °C. The results provide no evidence for water-molecule loss below 400 °C, as has been reported previously for natural potassium-jarosite and sodium-jarosite. Thermal-decomposition mechanisms have been proposed for potassium-jarosite and sodium-jarosite based on X-ray diffraction analyses of samples obtained at distinct points along the respective thermal decomposition processes. A comparison of the thermal analysis patterns of potassium-jarosite and sodium-jarosite indicates that sodium-jarosite undergoes the initiation of lattice destruction at a higher temperature.

Opis:
This work deals with the problem of X-ray stress determination on the samples dedicated to fatigue tests. A number of research studies point out the fact that the processing of hard, difficult to machine materials like nickel superalloys, reveals more than one trend of residual stress versus working parameters of behaviour (Lavella and Berruti, 2010). Many papers have shown that the residual stresses are dependent on a combination of a number of factors. When the above is taken into account simultaneously with the requirements of the internal General Electric specification for the fatigue tests samples preparation (Metallic test specimen preparation, low stress, 2017) the problem of turning and grinding parameters gathers significance. It is well known that the quality of the surface layer, produced during machining, is of vital importance for the fatigue life specially for the components of aircraft produced form nickel superalloys e.g. Inconel 718 (Kortabarri et al., 2011). That is why the surface layer’s properties are described in detail by the standards. The aim of the work is to determine one of the most influential features from the point of view of fatigue life, i.e. the stress state on the surface layer with one non-destructive method - the diffraction analysis.

Opis:
The main purpose of this study was to identify the mineral composition of soil sample taken from the upper layer of topsoil. High absorption of chemical substance is a characteristic for humus-organic layer of topsoil. The source of those substance could be a pollutant emitted to the atmosphere by human activity. The research area includes Upper Silesia region, which is the most industrial region of Poland. In the present study, the phase composition of the top soil separates were analyzed by using X-raydiffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of seven mineral phases in the material magnetic separated by lower current (quartz, illite, kaolinite, Fe3+ oxides, hematite, magnetite and pyrite). In case of higher current were identified four phases (quartz, muscovite, kaolinite and K0.94 Na0.06 (AlSi3 O8 )). Mössbauer spectroscopy was used for an extensive analysis of iron-containing phases (pyrrhotite, magnetite, aluminosilicate oxides with Fe3+ and kaolinite/Fe2+ silicate).

The synthesis, spectroscopic and X – Ray Diffraction studies of some Pd(II) complexes with bidentate Schiff bases are reported here. These Schiff bases were derived by condensing aldehydes like 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde, 5-chloro salicyladehyde with amines like 4-nitro aniline, 4-methyl aniline and 4-methoxy aniline. The complexes were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductivity, spectral (IR, 1H and electronic) as well as thermal analysis. All the Pd (II) complexes exhibit square planar geometry with 1:2 (metal : ligand) stoichiometry. The X- ray diffraction studies suggest monoclinic crystal system for these complexes.

The paper describes modification to Fm3 ̅m (space group no. 225) lattice of aluminium based α-solid solution observed in Zn-Al alloys required to properly correlate quantitative data from X-ray diffraction analysis with results obtained from quantitative scanning electron microscopy image analysis and those predicted from Zn-Al binary phase diagram. Results suggests that 14 at.% of Zn as a solute atom should be introduced in crystal lattice of aluminium to obtain correct estimation of phase quantities determined by quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. It was shown that this modification holds for Cu mould cast as well as annealed and water-cooled samples of Zn-3wt.%. Al and Zn-5wt.% Al.

Opis:
The objective of this work was to prepare benzofuroxan derivatives as new, dense, potentially energetic materials and to investigate their properties, with the main focus being on 5,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (5,6-DNBF). 5,6-DNBF was prepared by a 3-step reaction sequence: a) 1-azido-3-nitrobenzene was synthesized by diazotation of 3-nitroaniline with sodium nitrite and subsequent reaction with sodium azide in acetic/sulfuric mixed acids; b) it was nitrated with HNO3/H2SO4 to 1-azido-2,4,5-trinitrobenzene; c) thermal cyclization of the latter compound in a polar solvent gave the desired 5,6-DNBF (m.p. 177 °C). It was fully characterized by UV/VIS, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The density of the compound (X-ray) was found to be comparatively high (1.88 g/cm3), and to be superior to the previously known, isomeric energetic material ? 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (4,6-DNBF) (1.76 g/cm3). Furthermore, the synthesis of some other benzofuroxan derivatives, potentially interesting as high energy, density materials (HEDMs), has been carried out. The densities of the compounds obtained were calculated using ACD Labs software (version 4.0). Based on the results obtained, it could be concluded that 5,6-DNBF is one of the densest nitro derivatives of the benzofuroxan series, comparable to CL-14, CL-17, CL-18, and thus could have potential applications as an HEDM.

Halloysite was intercalated by the mechanochemical technique from dry components. The process efficiency of 50% was achieved. The obtained intercalate differed from the material acquired using an aqueous solution of potassium acetate. The material was analyzed employing electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, and dielectric spectroscopy. It was found that the molecules and/or ions present in the interlayer spaces retain some possibility of movement. This property of the material is promising for potential application as low expensive absorbers of electromagnetic radiation.

Opis:
The solution intercalation method was used for immobilization of low-molecular-mass lysine--based peptide dendrimers (Lys-D, hydrochloride form) on montmorillonite (MMT). The intercalation was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis of the products. Analysis of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms indicates that both interlayer and external clay surfaces are involved in the binding of dendrimeric peptides. Depending on the structure of Lys-D, including the location of protonated amino groups in peptide branches, the intercalation involves ion exchange between sodium montmorillonite and peptide ionic groups or proceeds leaving the intact peptide counterions. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) studies of MMT-Lys-D compounds indicate that the major mass-loss associated with the decomposition of peptide component is shifted to higher temperatures compared to the peptide itself.

In the present research technology of compositionally graded barium strontium titanate Ba1-xSrxTiO3 thin films deposited on stainless steel substrates by sol-gel spin coating followed with thermal annealing at T = 650°C is reported. Results of thermal behavior of the sol-gel derived powders with compositions used for fabrication of graded structure (i.e. with Sr mole fraction x =0.5, 0.4 and 0.3) are described. X-ray diffraction studies of the phase composition and crystal structure of such complex thin film configuration are given. It was found that gel powders exhibited a large total weight loss of about Δm ≈ 44-47%. Three stages of weight loss took place at temperature ranges: below T ≈ 300°C, at ΔT ≈ 300-500°C and between T = 600°C and T = 800°C. Phase analysis has shown that the dominating phase is Ba0.67Sr0.33TiO3 compound while the second phase is Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 or Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 for “up-graded” and “down-graded” structure, respectively.

However, the problem happened in the case of the observation of images obtained by scanning electron microscopy. In this case, the presence of various shades of gray, and the spaciousness of the image attained. To perform the analysis the matrix images of the ausferritic ductile iron were used. The article presents the results of research concerning to AlCu4MgSi alloy ingots produced using horizontal continuous casting process. The presented research was focused on the precise determination of phase composition of the precipitates formed during the solidification of ingots and the analysis of their thermal stability. In order to assess the morphology of precipitates in the AlCu4MgSi alloy, data obtained by using a computer simulation of thermodynamic phenomena were compiled with results obtained using advanced research techniques, i.e. High-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD), SEM-EDS, Thermal and derivative analysis (TDA) and Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD OES). SEM observations and analysis of chemical composition in micro-areas showed that the precipitates are mainly intermetallic θ-Al2Cu and β-Mg2Si phases, and also presence of Al19Fe4MnSi2 intermetallic phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. Based on the prepared Thermo-Calc simulation data, high-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements were conducted.
