Clara and Robert Schumann were connected very closely to the culture of the musical salons serving young and ambitious musicians and composers. Clara Schumann’s life is documented very well, but there is only a very small amount of literature dealing with her activities in the musical salon. This paper aims at providing an insight into the different circles Clara as well as her husband organised. The existent and non-existent source material is discussed and, by doing that, the current state of research on this subject is elaborated. Furthermore, this paper endeavours to point out the difficulties of research on this topic. That part is followed by a closer look at the characteristics of the private circles of the Schumanns during their years of marriage and the years after Robert Schumann’s death from 1856 to 1896.
Klara i Robert Schumannowie współtworzyli kulturę salonów muzycznych, pomagając tym samym młodym i ambitnym muzykom i kompozytorom. Życie Klary Schumann zostało bardzo dobrze udokumentowane, jednakże tylko kilka opracowań traktuje o jej działalności w zakresie prowadzenia salonu muzycznego. Niniejszy artykuł daje wgląd w kręgi towarzyskie Klary i jej męża. Biorąc pod uwagę aktualny stan badań, a także uwzględniając związane z tym trudności, omówiono zachowany i utracony materiał źródłowy. Tę część poprzedza charakterystyka towarzyskiej sfery Schumannów w okresie trwania ich małżeństwa, a także od śmierci Roberta Schumanna (1856) do 1896 r.

This article offers a synthetic overview of how Jan Kochanowski's artistic legacy manifested itself in the poetry of the third-generation Romantics - Cyprian Norwid and Teofil Lenartowicz. This overview of the work of the two latter poets proves that Czarnolas was perceived by them as an invaluable model of community life in the 19th-century context. The Czarnolas community ideally matched the Romantic reflection on the sense of freedom and the grandeur of the Polish nation – living in the political subjection to the partitioners. Jan Kochanowski and his oeuvre was a vital rediscovery, which allowed the 19th-century restitution of the myth of the Old Polish epoch, with its turning back to the roots of the Polish language and its debate on the fundamental problems of the time. All these motifs feature in the poetry by Norwid and Lenartowicz, who repeatedly made reference to the topos of the Czarnolas lute to show that they credit Kochanowski with being a poet of the nation.

The aim of this article is to present the endeavours undertaken in the 19th century by diverse governing bodies to build or (rebuild) and eventually improve the Polish water canal system. These activities concerned commissions from the Second Council of State, the Administrative Council, the Third Council of State and, inevitably, the Board of Land and Water Communications/Board of the 13th District of Communications, among others. In addition, some of the general state reports, especially those focusing on water transport issues, are analysed in this article. All of the researched matters deal with the following canals: Augustów, Windawa, Brudnów and Wisła-Narew.

The Polish Jesuit Maksymilian Ryłło (1802-1848) participated in several missionary endeavors undertaken by the Church in nineteenth century and entrusted to the Society of Jesus. Besides his missions in Middle East in 1836-1837 and 1839-1841, he was also one of the protagonists of an exploratory trip to North East Africa started in 1847 from Egypt and directed south. Arrived to Khartum and established there for a few months, Ryłło died in that city, while a few years later other missionaries took over the work of evangelization started by him and his companions. The present article introduces this Jesuit and focuses on the “African chapter” of his life – all as an attempt of filling the historiographical gap consisting in the fact that the English literature about Ryłło is almost inexistent.

This paper focuses on the phenomenon of the strongly complicated process of education of cadets and officers of tsarist transportation services corps during the 1830s of the 19th century. While primarily commencing this short study with introduction and changes in the didactic process occurring in Saint Petersburg Institute of Corps of Engineers of Roads of Communication at the early stages of its development, the main scope of the research was to describe: a) changes and restriction in the accessibility to the very process of education given in this Institute, b) the alteration in the formal entry and most of all scientific requirements. c) the outcome and circumstances of final examinations, all happening during the third decade of 19th century.

This article is an academic review of the book by Anna Roter-Bourkane entitled Traktat i traktatowość w poematach Cypriana Norwida [Treatise and its features in poems by Cyprian Norwid] (Poznań 2014). The author of the review proves that the publication of the scholar from Poznań is an important voice in today’s intense genological research dedicated to recognising the genre-specific components that make up Norwid’s work. Attention is also drawn to the methodology used by Anna Roter-Bourkane, the contexts she describes and the ambition to define the concepts mentioned in the title of the book. At the same time, the author raises questions about the aesthetics of the treatise-typical features, which in the examined book is not clearly distinguished from the genre of treaty.
Artykuł jest recenzją naukową książki Anny Roter-Bourkane Traktat i traktatowość w poematach Cypriana Norwida (Poznań 2014). Autorka recenzji dowodzi, że publikacja poznańskiej badaczki stanowi ważny głos ożywionych dziś badań genologicznych, służących rozpoznawaniu gatunkowych komponentów budujących Norwidowskie dzieło. Ponadto zwraca uwagę na warsztat metodologiczny Anny Roter-Bourkane, wskazane przez nią konteksty oraz ambicję definicyjnego rozstrzygnięcia tytułowych pojęć książki. Jednocześnie stawia pytania o estetykę traktatowości, która w opisywanej książce nie zostaje w wyraźny sposób odróżniona od formy gatunkowej traktatu.

For a historian examining the history of North-Eastern Mazovia in the 19th and 20th centuries, essential will be the records remains of the authorities and institutions, whose functioning is the effect of a changing administrative affiliation of those areas. They preserved in various conditions and are kept in different archives. For the history of those lands in the 19th century, the majority of records are kept in AGAD. These are the fonds related to the activity of the authorities of different level from the period of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland. The early 20th century is the time of war and restoring Poland. From that period, the records of the occupant’s authorities preserved as well as the fonds created by the established Polish institutions. They are kept mainly in AAN and in state archives in the area of Mazovia, similarly to the records from the period of th Nazi occupation. Open is the issue of researching the history of North-Eastern Mazovia in the post-war period, for which the archival materials are kept in national archives. The aim of the present dissertation is to help in the search of sources for developing the history of North-Eastern Mazovia.
Historykowi zajmującemu się badaniem przeszłości Mazowsza Północno- Wschodniego w XIX i XX wieku niezbędne są pozostałości aktowe władz i instytucji, których funkcjonowanie jest efektem zmieniającej się przynależności administracyjnej tych obszarów. Zachowały się one w bardzo różnym stopniu i znajdują się w różnych archiwach. Dla dziejów tych ziem w wieku XIX najwięcej źródeł przechowywanych jest w AGAD-zie. Są to zespoły związane z działalnością organów władzy rożnego szczebla z okresu Księstwa Warszawskiego i Królestwa Polskiego. Początek XX wieku to lata wojny oraz odbudowy państwa polskiego. Z tego okresu zachowały się akta władz okupacyjnych oraz zespoły wytworzone przez tworzone instytucje polskie. Znajdują się one przede wszystkim w AAN oraz archiwach państwowych na terenie Mazowsza. Podobnie jest w przypadku akt z lat okupacji hitlerowskiej. Otwartym zagadnieniem jest badanie dziejów Mazowsza Północno-Wschodniego w okresie powojennym, do którego archiwalia znajdują się w archiwach państwowych. Niniejsze opracowanie ma pomóc w poszukiwaniach źródeł do opracowania historii Mazowsza Północno-Wschodniego.

The paper deals with an introduction to and examination of selected issues relating to Tsarist transportation administration structures, since their establishment in 1809, practically their governance was ended by Count Carl von Toll at the beginning of the 1840s. The main topics analysed here concern matters of the internal division of the whole of the administrative transportation network and its changes made by the main ministry, as well as some control and budgetary (or rather accounting problems) associated with transportation laws.

The aim of this article is to present the main proposals of two Tsarist Russia transportation laws, introduced in the spring of 1833 and at the turn of 1834. Both laws were prepared by Count Dmitry Bludov, then Minister of the Interior, and finally accepted by Tsar Nicholas I himself. Their main goal was to properly develop the Russian transportation network, but not too rapidly and without consuming a considerable amount of State Treasury funds.

Teodor Narbutt’s works on the history of Lithuania provoked ambivalent evaluations. On one hand the importance of the subject he undertook was emphasised, on the other hand, the author was reproached for deficiencies in methodology, which disqualified him as a historian. His research grew on the basis of interest in Lithuanian culture, it led to the search for autonomous properties of the Lithuanian statehood, emphasising differences proving the separateness of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania within the framework of the Kingdom of Poland. The theses stated within the work have not withstood the test of time, they did not meet the social expectations. They were quickly verified by the political events of the second half of the 19th century. Although Narbutt’s works were criticised, they influenced the shape of Lithuanian culture.
Prace Teodora Narbutta poświęcone dziejom Litwy prowokowały do ambiwalentnych ocen. Z jednej strony podkreślano wagę podjętego tematu, z drugiej zarzucano autorowi braki warsztatowe, dyskwalifikujące go jako historyka. Jego badania wyrosłe na gruncie zainteresowań kulturą litewską, prowadziły do poszukiwania autonomicznych cech państwowości litewskiej, akcentowania różnic dowodzących odrębności Litwy i Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego w ramach Królestwa Polskiego. Tezy pracy, nie przetrwały próby czasu, nie spełniały oczekiwań społecznych. Szybko zostały zweryfikowane przez wydarzenia polityczne drugiej połowy XIX w. Mimo, że prace Narbutta były krytykowane, nie pozostały bez wpływu na kształt kultury litewskiej.
