    This study is an invitation to reflect on issues that fall within the area of collective memory, an area that awaits further in-depth analysis. More specifically, this article is a proposal of a broader study on cultural landscape and places of memory than that which is dominant in the sociological literature. In particular, I examine the relationship between the inhabitants of the Polish “Western Lands” and the material German heritage of the cities in which they happen to live. I mainly focus on the relation between socially constructed memory and greenery—a “negligible” part of the space of human life. As I demonstrate in the article, the “green” narrations about Wrocław created after World War II are lasting and are still present in the stories of city’s inhabitants today.

    Primate S. Wyszyński was interested in each symptom of social and religious life of the society in the Western Lands. Thanks to his frequent visitations he knew Church, social and national reality in this area very well. He also noticed an important role of the Church in its mission to unite these lands with “homeland”. Primate was not doubtful that these lands fairly belonged to Poland. The assignment of these lands to Poland was perceived by him as not only the recognition of historical rights, but also as “Divine restitution”, as an expression of justice for Poland being harmed by the German occupier, and not a political game. In his speeches and sermons, he reassured and encouraged its inhabitants. He called them to last here, on these old Piast lands, and believe in „historical moment of the nation on these lands” and to love this land. Primate noticed the effects of confusing policy of the communists towards Silesian people in Opole region. He saw that the encounter of indigenous people with Poland by communism must have been disastrous for Poland, which identified everything, which was Polish, with communism.

    Primate Stefan Wyszyński engaged in a series of administrative and diplomatic activities related to the institution of the Polish Church organisation in the Western Lands. In the years 1948-1967 he exercised his authority over the Church in this area. He initially supervised apostolic administrators in Wrocław, Opole, Gorzów Wielkopolski, and in Olsztyn and Gdańsk, and after their removal in 1951 he sanctioned vicar capitulars elected by the state authority to preserved unity of the Church in Poland. In 1956 his attempts resulted in the restoration of the relevant bishops to their posts. In 1967 at his request the Pope Paul VI excluded the Church organisation in the Western Lands from the jurisdiction of Primate of Poland and subordinated it directly to the Holy See, instituting apostolic administrations there. primate repeatedly conducted negotiations with the Holy See in case of the institution of the Polish Church organisation in this area, which ended only after the ratification of the Polish-German treaty in 1972 by the announcement of the apostolic constitution Episcoporum Poloniae coetus. During the entire period Primate repeatedly visited archdiocese of Wrocław and supported the activities of the hierarchs governing this area, initially priest Karol Milik, and subsequently priest Kazimierz Lagosz and since 1956 bishop Bolesław Kominek. Primate Wyszyński repeatedly emphasised the rights of Poland to these lands in his speeches and sermons delivered in Wrocław. He proved that they resulted, on the one hand from their historical embeddedness in the Polish culture (he was referring to the relations of Silesia with Poland in the Piast period), and on the other hand he pointed to the re-Catholising mission of the Church in these lands. He also indicated that these lands are the peculiar compensation for the losses incurred by the Polish nation during the Second World War. He perceived the tasks of the Church in this area during the period of the stabilisation of the Polish Church administration as the Polish reason of state.

    The German troops’ large-scale retreat on the Eastern Front was accompanied by a substantial population outflow from the occupied regions of the USSR. The German Mennonites (approx. 35,000 people) preferred to obey the occupiers’ order and evacuate to the west in the autumn of 1943. Several thousands of them were transported in echelons directly to Warthegau and the region of Danzig. The remaining part of deportees had to sustain a difficult and dramatic route in the convoys. The Nazi leadership planned to use them as settlers or labour force on the annexed Western Polish lands. After the end of the Second World War, most of the Mennonites were forcibly repatriated to the USSR; others succeeded in emigrating to Canada or Latin America.

    Celem artykułu jest porównanie życiorysów rządowych pełnomocników kierowanych w 1945 r. na nowo przyłączane do Polski ziemie oraz poszukiwanie łączących ich elementów. Zaprezentowano sylwetki ludzi zarządzających tuż po wojnie „Ziemiami Odzyskanymi” Leonarda Borkowicza, Jakuba Prawina, Stanisława Piaskowskiego oraz Aleksandra Zawadzkiego. Przybliżono także biografie tych, którzy choć nominowani, nie przejęli powierzanych im stanowisk – Aleksandra Kaczochy-Józefskiego oraz Jerzego Sztachelskiego. Szczególny nacisk został położony na podejmowane przez nich polityczne i ideologiczne wybory. W artykule podjęto również rozważania na temat polityki kadrowej polskich komunistów.
    The aim of the article is to compare the biographies of the governmental plenipotentiaries who were sent to Poland in 1945 and to search for the elements connecting them. The profiles of people managing the “Regained Lands” just after the war are presented – Leonard Borkowicz, Jakub Prawin, Stanisław Piaskowski and Aleksander Zawadzki. The biographies of those who, although nominated, did not take over their posts – Aleksander Kaczochy-Józefski and Jerzy Sztachelski – have also been presented. Particular emphasis was placed on the political and ideological choices they made. The article also discusses the human resources policy of Polish communists.

    The text is an attempt to show a group portrait of Greek-Catholic clergy and consecrated persons who, after 1947, (after the “Vistula” action) found themselves in the western and northern parts of Poland. The analysis was carried out based on 142 people (diocesan priests, monks and nuns), who had to function in extremely unfavourable conditions, which in practice resulted in an actual ban on the functioning of the Greek Catholic pastoral ministry and on any religious performance by consecrated persons of the ministry among – also resettled – believers. On the basis of archival materials from state and – above all – ecclesiastical (Greek-Catholic and Roman-Catholic) archives, as well as the literature on the subject, the aforementioned group was analysed in terms of age, date of ordination, entry into the monastery or congregation, or the exercise of ministry – in the absence of an alternative – in the Latin rite. The question of a return to the native spiritual habit (when it was possible) and of the involvement in structures loyal to the authorities (the state “Caritas” or “Patriotic Priests”) was also examined. This publication is the first attempt to address the issue on such a nationwide scale.
    Tekst jest próbą ukazania zbiorowego portretu greckokatolickich osób duchownych i konsekrowanych, które po 1947 r. (tj. po akcji „Wisła”) znalazły się na zachodnich i północnych ziemiach Polski. Analizie poddano 142 postacie (kapłani diecezjalni, zakonnicy i zakonnice), którym przyszło funkcjonować w skrajnie niesprzyjających warunkach, sprowadzających się w praktyce do faktycznego zakazu funkcjonowania duszpasterstwa greckokatolickiego oraz pełnienia przez osoby konsekrowane jakiejkolwiek posługi w tym rycie wśród – także przesiedlonych – wiernych. Na podstawie materiałów archiwalnych z archiwów państwowych oraz – przede wszystkim – kościelnych (greckokatolickich i rzymskokatolickich), a także literatury przedmiotu, przeanalizowano wspomnianą grupę m.in. pod kątem wieku, daty święceń, wstąpienia do zakonu lub zgromadzenia czy też pełnienia posługi – w warunkach braku alternatywy – w obrządku łacińskim. Nie pominięto także kwestii powrotu do rodzimego rytu duchownych (gdy już to było możliwe) oraz zaangażowania w strukturach lojalnych wobec władz (państwowy „Caritas” czy „księża patrioci”). Publikacja jest pierwszą próbą podjęcia tytułowego zagadnienia w takiej skali.
