Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of various additives (straw, grass, molasses, dried sugar beet pulp – pellets, inoculant, organic acids) on the quality and fermentation profile of Virginia fanpetals (Sida hermaphrodita L.) silage. Silage samples were assayed for the content of dry matter – DM, crude ash, crude protein – CP, water soluble carbohydrates – WSC, neutral detergent fiber – NDF, acid detergent fiber – ADF and acid detergent lignin – ADL as well as pH and the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, lactic acid, acetic acid and butyric acid. Silage quality was evaluated according to the DLG Key. Apparent digestibility was determined in sheep, and the digestibility coefficients of DM, CP, NDF, organic matter – OM and digestible OM were calculated. The tested additives increased DM, decreased ADL content (P≤0.01), and reduced WSC utilization (P≤0.05, P≤0.01) in silages. Only sugar beet pulp decreased the content of NDF and ADF (P≤0.01). All silages had similar pH values (4.01 - 4.10). The analyzed silages were characterized by intense lactic acid fermentation, which was inhibited only by the grass additive (P≤0.01). All additives suppressed acetic acid fermentation (P≤0.05, P≤0.01). Grass and sugar beet pulp significantly decreased the concentration of butyric acid (P≤0.01). The addition of grass decreased CP digestibility (from 92.1% in the control silage to 89.3%), whereas the addition of a bacterial inoculant (P≤0.01) and a blend of organic acids (P≤0.05) increased CP digestibility to 93.8% and 92.8%, respectively. The addition of grass and sugar beet pulp increased the coefficient of NDF digestibility by 6 percentage points relative to 60.9% in the control silage. The addition of the inoculant and organic acids decreased NDF digestibility to 56.0% and 50.5%, respectively. Dried sugar beet pulp was the most effective additive, which positively affected the chemical composition, fermentation profile and apparent digestibility of Sida silage.

A single-factor fi eld experiment was carried out at the Cultivar Evaluation Station in Szczecin-Dąbie in 2008-2010. In the experiment, the compost produced with municipal sewage sludge by the GWDA method and high-calcium brown coal ash (furnace waste) were used. The perennial energy crop was a test plant - Virginia fanpetals (Sida hermaphrodita Rusby). It results from the carried out study that Virginia fanpetals biomass contained on average the most manganese (24.7 mg?kg-1 d.m.), lead (2.50 mg?kg-1 d.m.) and zinc (50.5 mg?kg-1 d.m.) in 2008, while the most cadmium (0.33 mg?kg-1 d.m.), copper (3.78 mg?kg-1 d.m.) and nickel (2.57 mg?kg-1 d.m.) in 2010. Average cadmium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc contents in test plant biomass were higher, respectively by 14.3%, 10.0%, 7.3%, 19.3%, 29.1% and 6.9%, in the objects where municipal sewage sludge compost had been applied without and with addition of high-calcium brown coal ash when compared to those where only calcium carbonate or high-calcium brown coal ash had been introduced into the soil. The differences in cadmium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc contents in Virginia fanpetals biomass between particular experimental objects were not signifi cant. The least zinc was absorbed by the test plant biomass in the object with high-calcium brown coal ash being applied in the fi rst year of study and annually. When evaluating the dynamics of heavy metals uptake, it was found to be the lowest in the fi rst year of study (ranging from 4.40% to 11.0%). It increased in the second and the third year of study, oscillating between 29.9% and 65.7%. The degree of heavy metals accumulation in Virginia fanpetals biomass differed, depending on the fertilisation applied. The bioaccumulation factor of cadmium, copper and nickel after three study years was average, while that of manganese, lead and zinc was intense.

Opis:
Woolf’s maturing as a writer was deeply influenced by her traumatic experiences in childhood, the (in)capacitating states of mental instability, as well as her proto-feminist convictions. Long before Barthes, she toppled the traditional position of the author, and her literary enshrinement of “the other reality” reached unity with the world rather than individuality. This article ponders Woolf’s creative impulse and investigates her autobiographical writings to show the import of their impact on her fiction, which, as Woolfian scholarship suggests, can be viewed as autobiographical, too. I argue that philosophical hermeneutics sheds light on the self-portrait that emerges from Woolf’s autobiographical writings and offers a rewarding insight into her path of becoming an author. I assert that Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of subjectivity, and, in particular, his notion of narrative identity provide a route to examine how Woolf discovers her writing voice. In light of his hermeneutics of the self, the dispersed elements of the narrative of life can be seen as a possibility of self-encounter. Woolf’s writings bespeak her gradually evolving self-knowledge and self-understanding, which come from the configuration of those separate “stories” into a meaningful whole. The article also interprets Woolf’s autobiographical writings through the prism of Michel Foucault’s reflection on discourse and subjectivity, indicating that her texts instantiate his assertion of the subject’s constant disappearance.

The paper presents findings showing the influence of amending soil with biochar and biomass ash on the germination rate of Virginia mallow. Comparative analyses examined the relationship between the applied dosage of the natural fertilizers and the effectiveness of seed germination as well as mass of the plants at the initial stage of growth. The obtained plant material was also examined for the contents of selected macro-elements (phosphorus, potassium and calcium). The study shows that biochar applied as a fertilizer, at specific dosage, may enhance germination rate of Virginia mallow seeds. Addition of biomass ash into the soil, at certain doses, significantly impacts the growth of mass in Virginia fanpetals at the initial stage of development. It has been determined that addition of biochar, or biomass ash or their mixtures into the soil alters the concentration of phosphorus, potassium and calcium in above-ground parts of the plants.

Opis:
Beginning with the theme of the location of haunting in Gothic interiors and the confusion of life and death and the “sub-central” positioning of the feminine as the hidden source of fearfulness, the paper analyzes Virginia Woolf’s “Street Haunting: A London Adventure” as an example of a narrative written from the position of the haunting in which the figure of fearful feminine is transformed into a “hauntess” participating in the public world on equal rights with others. Woolf’s text, though seemingly positing the protagonist in the position of flâneuse, in fact implicitly criticizes flâneuring as a masculine kind of looking and participating in the public space. Taking place away from home, Woolf’s strolling in the streets of London carnivalizes (in the Bakhtinian sense) the activity by way of a joyful blurring of the split between the home and the market. Transgressing what Kathryn Simpson calls “the male privilege of the flâneur” (2010: 47) and rendering the transgression as haunting, Woolf evades participation in the masculine world of traffic and exchange by way of bringing the space of the Gothic confinement, and also of entombment, to the public.

Opis:
Municipal sewage sludge contains many valuable nutrients which can be used in the cultivation of energy crops. Application of large doses of sewage sludge can be a cause of environmental pollution, especially with nutrients. The multiflora rose and the Virginia fanpetals are plants with high nutritional requirements. The use of municipal sewage sludge in the cultivation of energy crops will allow recycling the nutrients from this organic waste. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of macroelements from municipal sewage sludge by the multiflora rose var. "Jatar" (Rosa multiflora Thunb. ex Murray) and the Virginia fanpetals (Sida hermaphrodita Rusby). Four levels of sewage sludge fertilization were applied in the 6-year field experiment: 0, 10, 20, 40, 60 Mg DM sludge ∙ ha-1. Sewage sludge was applied once before planting energy crops. Due to the low potassium content in sewage sludge, a single supplementary fertilization with 100 kg K ∙ ha-1 in the form of 40% potassium salt (KCl) was applied on each plot. The study involved the evaluation of the yield, uptake and use by energy plants of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na from sewage sludge. It was found that the increasing doses of sewage sludge significantly raised the multiflora rose and the Virginia fanpetals biomass yields. The yield of the Virginia fanpetals was one and a half times higher than that of the multiflora rose. The increasing doses of sewage sludge significantly raised the contents and uptake of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na by these plants. The highest uptake of macronutrients by the multiflora rose and the Virginia fanpetals crops was determined for 60 Mg DM ∙ ha-1 fertilization dose. The results show that the Virginia fanpetals used N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na from the sewage sludge to a greater extent than the multiflora rose. The analyses indicate that due to the greater yields, bioaccumulation and uptake of macronutrients, Virginia fanpetals is more effective in the ‘purification’ of the substrate from excess nutrients that may pose a threat to the environment.

Censorship has often been regarded as the archenemy of artists, thinkers and writers. But has this always been the case? This research paper proposes that censorship is not a total evil or adversarial force which thwarts and hinders twentieth-century writers, particularly those who were part of the artistic, aesthetic, philosophical and intellectual movement known as Modernism. Though the word “censor” originally means a Roman official who, in the past, had a duty to monitor access to writing, the agents of censorship – particularly those in the modern times – are not in every case overt and easy to identify. Though Modernist writers openly condemn censorship, many of them nevertheless take on the role of censors who not only condone but also undergo self--censorship or censorship of others. In many cases in Modernist literature, readership and literary production, the binary opposition of victim and victimiser, as well as of censored and censor, is questioned and challenged. This research paper offers an analysis of the ways in which Virginia Woolf (1882–1941), Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997), Czesław Miłosz (1911–2004) and Bohumil Hrabal (1914–1997) lived and wrote by negotiating with many forms of censorship ranging from state censorship, social censorship, political censorship, moral censorship to self-censorship. It is a study of the ways in which these writers problematise and render ambiguity to the seemingly clear-cut and mutually exclusive division between the oppressive censor and the oppressed writer. The selected writers not only criticise and compromise with censorship, but also thematise and translate it into their works.

The aim of this study has been to determine the influence of sewage sludge on the content of selected trace elements in Virginia mallow and in the soil after harvesting these plants. Sewage sludge was the source of nitrogen and phosphorus for the plants, while potassium was supplied in the form of mineral fertilisers. Virginia mallow plants grown without fertilisation served as the contnrol. The form and dose of sewage sludge did not have any larger effect on the concentrations of copper and zinc in the plants. The content of manganese and chromium increased as the the dose of either form of sewage sludge increased. In turn, the content of nickel in Virginia mallow tended to decrease as the doses of sludge rose. The biomass of Virginia mallow contained significantly more cadmium when fertilised with sewage sludge. Significantly more Mn and Pb accumulated in the soil which had been enriched with wet sewage sludge, while the soil treated with pelleted sewage sludge contained more Cd. The soil content of Zn, Mn, Pb and Cr tended to increase as the dose of sewage sludge increased. With respect to nickel and cadmium, their soil content was significantly differentiated by the applied doses of sewage sludge but the direction of these modifications was inconsistent. The forms or doses of sewage sludge applied left the content of copper in soil unaffected. Concerning the accumulation in the aerial parts of Virginia mallow plants, the heavy metals can be ordered as follows: Cd < Cu < Cr < Ni < Zn < Mn. Generally, sewage sludge applied in doses that covered the demand of Virginia mallow for nitrogen and phosphorus did not cause excessive increase in the content of heavy metals in the crop’s aerial biomass. However, an increase in the dose of sewage sludge tended to raise the content of mobile forms of heavy metals in soil after harvest of Virginia mallow.

A one-factor field experiment was carried out in 2016–2019 at the Experimental Station in Lipnik near Stargard. The aim of the study was the cultivation of Virginia fanpetals in two systems of sowing and planting, determining the impact of the cultivation system on the yield quantity, calorific value, moisture, content and dynamics of the macronutrient uptake by Virginia fanpetals, calculation of the relationship between the yield and NPK intake, calorific value and yield as well as the analytical moisture content. Studies have shown that the method of establishing the plantation (sowing, planting) did not have any significant impact on the calorific value of Sida. A statistical analysis indicated that the method of establishing the plantation (sowing, planting) did not have a significant impact on the formation of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents in the biomass, while it was significant for magnesium and sulfur. More macroelements was contained in the Virginia fanpetals biomass from sowing compared to planting. The total uptake of macronutrients by the Virginia fanpetals biomass was higher in the planting cultivation system. In the system of planting cultivation, in the first year of plantation operation, higher dynamics of the N, P, K, Mg and S uptake by the Virginia fanpetals biomass compared to the sowing system was found. A correlation analysis showed very high degree of correlation between the size of Virginia fanpetals biomass yield as well as the nitrogen and phosphorus uptake.

Drawing on Jean-Luc Nancy’s insights into bodies as the place of existence, David Abram’s thinking on the more-than-human world, Jane Bennett’s conceptualisation of vibrant matter and Stacy Alaimo’s notion of “transcorporeality,” this article explores how Virginia Woolf transforms fiction into a powerful epistemological tool in her examination of the self amidst a vibrant world. In novels like Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves(1931), Woolf found not only that human beings are finite, singular and exposed, but also porous, embodied selves that are sensuously immersed in the vitality intrinsic to matter. Fascinated by the flow of consciousness and the workings of the human mind when confronted with reality, the novelist seeks to capture the evanescent moment in time as refracted through the consciousness of her own characters. Her compulsion to write down impressions, thoughts, and half-ideas is expressive of her concern with imposing order upon the phenomena of a world populated by agentive entities through the medium of language. If the flux of life was simply unstoppable, language gave her at least the opportunity to freeze moments of being and look at them as if from simultaneous perspectives, as well as to shed light on how humans are in and of the earth – i.e., part of, not apart from, a more-than-human world.

Opis:
Virginia Foster Durr was born in 1903 in Birmingham, Alabama in a former planter class family, and in spite of the gradual decline in the family fortune, she was brought up as a traditional southern belle, utterly subjected to the demands of the ideology of white male supremacy that ruled the Jim Crow South. Thus, she soon learnt that in the South a black woman could not be a lady, and that as a young southern woman she was desperately in need of a husband. It was not until she had fulfilled this duty that she began to open her eyes to the reality of poverty, injustice, discrimination, sexism and racism ensuing from the set of rules she had so easily embraced until then. In Outside the Magic Circle, Durr describes the process that made her aware of the gender discrimination implicit in the patriarchal southern ideology, and how this realization eventually led her to abhor racial segregation and the ideology of white male supremacy. As a consequence, in her memoirs she presents herself as a rebel facing the social ostracism resulting from her determination to fight against gender and racial discrimination in the Jim Crow South. This article delves into Durr’s composed textual self as a rebel, and suggests the existence of a crack in it, rooted in her inability to discern the real effects of white male supremacy on the domestic realm and in her subsequent blindness to the reality behind the mammy stereotype.
