Perovskite catalysts with active phase composed of LaMnO3 or La0.75Ag0.25MnO3 doped with noble metals — platinum or palladium — were tested for activity in oxidation of toluene. Their impregnation with solution of Pt or Pd compounds increased the catalytic activity. LaMnO3 with Pt content displayed the highest activity. LaMnO3 perovskite doped with both noble metals show higher activity than when noble metals were added to La0.75Ag0.25MnO3 perovskite.

Recently growing importance of control of indoor air. The requirements for such detectors are very high: a sensitivity of several tens of ppb; the detection of a large number of substances or to indicate the total amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), work in high humidity ranges. A very good solution for the determination of the VOCs is to use IMS (Ion Mobility Spectrometers) or DMS (ang. Differential Mobility Spectrometry) technology, which has a relatively low price while meeting the above requirements. The most important difference between classical spectrometer IMS and the DMS is the electric field. For the IMS it is a constant magnetic field of low intensity – around several hundred volts per cm, meanwhile for the DMS it is at least several kilovolts per cm and is a field with a relatively high frequency from 1 up to several MHz. Another area in which the detection of VOC is becoming increasingly important, is early diagnosis of serious diseases of civilization, eg. diabetes, lung or liver disease – the diagnosis can be made based on the analysis of exhaled air, preferably in conjunction with the study of emissions substances from the skin. Issues related to the prevention and early detection of the above mentioned diseases are rapidly developed, eg. in the US or in the UK. Given the scale of the problem and the challenges of a potential diagnostic method, the proposed technology DMS/IMS begins to be considered as possible to apply. Spectrometers of this type are also developed in Poland by WIChiR. Research results on the selected VOCs are showed in this presentation.
Coraz większego znaczenia nabiera kontrola powietrza wewnątrz pomieszczeń. Wymagania na takie detektory są bardzo wysokie: czułość na poziomie kilkudziesięciu ppb; wykrywanie dużej liczby substancji lub wskazywanie sumarycznej ilości lotnych związków organicznych (LZO), praca w wysokich zakresach wilgotności. Bardzo dobrym rozwiązaniem do oznaczania LZO jest zastosowanie technologii IMS (ang. Ion Mobility Spektrometry) i DMS (ang. Differential Mobility Spectrometry), które charakteryzują się relatywnie niską ceną spełniając jednocześnie powyższe wymagania. Najistotniejszą różnicą pomiędzy klasycznym spektrometrem IMS-em, a DMS-em jest pole elektryczne. Dla IMS-a jest to pole stałe o niewielkim natężeniu – kilkaset volt na cm, natomiast dla DMS-a jest to co najmniej kilkanaście kilowoltów na cm, przy czym jest to pole o dość wysokiej częstotliwości od 1 do kilku MHz. Kolejna dziedzina, w której wykrywanie LZO nabiera coraz większego znaczenia to wczesna diagnoza groźnych chorób cywilizacyjnych, np. cukrzyca, choroby płuc czy wątroby – diagnoza ta może być dokonana na podstawie analizy wydychanego powietrza najlepiej w połączeniu z badaniem emisji ze skóry. Zagadnienia związane z zapobieganiem i wczesnym wykrywaniem ww. chorób są bardzo raptownie rozwijane np. w USA i Wielkiej Brytanii. Biorąc pod uwagę skalę problemu oraz wyzwania stawiane potencjalnej metodzie diagnostycznej, proponowana technologia DMS/IMS zaczyna być rozważana jako możliwa do zastosowania. Spektrometry tego typu są opracowane również w Polsce w WIChiR. Wyniki badań dla przykładowych LZO zostały przedstawione w niniejszej prezentacji.

ObjectivesThe etiology of exocrine pancreatic cancer (EPC) remains unknown except for family history and smoking. Despite recent medical advances, rates of pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality are increasing. Although existing evidence suggests a potentially causal relationship between environmental chemical exposures and pancreatic cancer, whether residential exposure impacts pancreatic cancer rates remains unknown.Material and MethodsThe authors identified 28 941 patients diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic cancer in New York State exclusive of New York City for the years 1996–2013. Descriptive statistics and negative binomial regression were used in this ecological study to compare pancreatic cancer hospitalization rates among patients who lived in zip codes with hazardous waste sites (HWSs) containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) compared with clean zip codes with no identified hazardous waste sites. The authors assessed the effect of selected known and suspected human carcinogens on the EPC hospitalization rates by subgroup analyses.ResultsCompared with the clean sites, the pancreatic cancer hospital discharge rate in the “VOCs without POPs” and “VOCs and POPs” sites, after adjustment for potential confounders were 1.06 (95% CI: 1.03–1.09) and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01–1.08), respectively. In the analysis by specific chemicals, rate ratios (RR) for the benzene (RR = 1.12) and ethylbenzene (RR = 1.34) in the non-chlorinated VOCs group, trichloroethylene (RR = 1.07) and tetrachloroethylene (RR = 1.11) in the chlorinated VOCs group, chlorinated pesticides (RR = 1.11) and PCBs (RR = 1.05) in the POPs groups were statistically significant (p-values <0.05) compared with clean sites.ConclusionsCompared with the clean sites, the pancreatic cancer hospital discharge rate in the “VOCs without POPs” and “VOCs and POPs” sites, after adjustment for potential confounders were 1.06 (95% CI: 1.03–1.09) and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01–1.08), respectively. A SAW gas sensor based on Zinc Oxide (ZnO) piezoelectric substrate is simulated and evaluated for the detection of the dichloromethane (DCM) volatile organic compound (VOC). The study is performed based on the finite element method (FEM) using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The obtained device response using the ZnO substrate is compared to the one using the typical lithium niobate (LiNbO3) piezoelectric substrate. A thin film of polyisobutylene (PIB) membrane is selected to act as the sensing layer. The obtained results reveal a linear behaviour of the resonance frequency downshift (i.e., the sensor sensitivity) versus the investigated gas concentrations varying from 10 ppm to 100 ppm of DCM gas. Additionally, the sensor response is investigated by applying several thicknesses of PIB ranging from 0.3 µm to 1.0 µm. The observed sensor response shows less dependence on the PIB thickness using the ZnO substrate than the LiNbO3 one.

The new passenger car, BMW 225 XE was tested. The results of measurements of concentration of VOCs carried out inside the car cabin depending on the temperature were presented. The investigation was carried out in a special climatic chamber isolated from external factors such as outside air pollutants and weather conditions. The following temperature values have been set: 17ºC, 20ºC, 35ºC and 50ºC. The samples were located inside and outside of the vehicle’s cabin. As expected, the concentrations of each compound increased with increasing temperature (volatility of VOCs increases with the temperature). Values of concentrations obtained in the measurements have been compared with the values of highest acceptable concentration specified in polish law. The article describes the investigation, which was provided in a special climatic chamber. The chamber was isolated from external weather conditions and pollutants. Before each sampling interior of car cabin was ventilated to remove all pollutants from inside. Concentrations of BTX measured in different temperatures were converted to temperature of 20ºC.

The volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are significant group o air pollution emitted during fuel combustion in diesel engines. This research work is continuation of research where the influence of an inert catalyst on toxic emission from a self-ignition engine has been investigated. In particular volatile organic compounds VOC's emissions which are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, have been studied. The experimental results show that implementation of catalytic coating on chosen elements of diesel engine causes change of percentage participation of particular compounds in their sum and decrease of their concentration. The analysis of chosen compounds (benzene and formaldehyde) shows that the modification which was proposed causes increase of concentration of those substances when engine works in specific conditions, what is connected with change of engine exhaust toxicity and decrease in PAHs concentration, what is connected with toxicity decrease in exhaust gases. In particularly research work stand, the comparison of total VOC's concentration with and without catalytic coating, the comparison of benzene concentration, the comparison of formaldehyde concentration, the comparison of toxicity level with and without catalytic coating are presented in the paper.

The aim of this work is to present Volatile Organic Compounds degradation by microorganisms. Vinyl acetate was utilized by laboratory strain Pseudomonas fluorescens PCM 2123 or environmental strain EC3_2001, identified as Pseudomonas putida. Styrene was decomposed by bacteria from genus Pseudomonas, described as E-93486. The experiments were conducted for different initial concentration of vital substrate in a batch reactor. During research influence of organic compound concentration on microorganisms’ growth was studied.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań procesu degradacji lotnych związków organicznych przez mikroorganizmy. Badania dotyczyły rozkładu octanu winylu przez dwa różne szczepy: laboratoryjny Pseudomonas fluorescens oraz EC3_2001, zidentyfikowany jako Pseudomonas putida. Druga część badań dotyczyła degradacji styrenu przez szczep E-93486. Omówiono wyniki pomiarów prowadzonych w reaktorze okresowym, w którym utrzymywano stałą temperaturę 30°C, pH = 7, prędkość mieszania 300 rpm oraz natlenienie podłoża na poziomie 5 mg·dm–3. W czasie trwania hodowli okresowo pobierano próbki płynu hodowlanego w celu określenia aktualnego stężenia substratu i ewentualnie produktów pośrednich (za pomocą chromatografu gazowego Varian 3800) oraz stężenia biomasy (poprzez pomiar absorbancji). Badania przeprowadzono w reaktorze okresowym dla szerokiego zakresu zmian początkowego stężenia substratu życiowego. Zgromadzona baza danych eksperymentalnych umożliwi wyestymowanie stałych równania opisującego szybkość wzrostu mikroorganizmów oraz współczynników wydajności biomasy dla obu analizowanych substratów wzrostowych.

Chemical compounds released into the air by the activities of industrial plants and emitted from many other sources, including in households (paints, waxes, cosmetics, disinfectants, plastic (PVC) flooring), may affect the environment and human health. Thus, air purification is an important issue in the context of caring for the condition of the environment. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as liquids with environmentally friendly properties (non-volatile, biodegradable, non-toxic, cheap, easy to prepare) are a promising solution to this problem. This paper reviews the advances made in the application of DESs as sorbents for the purification of atmospheric and indoor air. The potential of DESs and their subclasses (including SUPRAmolecular Deep Eutectic Solvents, SUPRADESs) applications in air purification processes were also summarized.The authors believe that this review can be useful for future readers as a starting point for research in the field of DESs and their application in air purification.

Nowadays, with the current dynamic development of the automotive industry, we spend more and more time indoors, including in vehicles. The air used for ventilation of the vehicle's cabin comes from the outside. Pollution enters into the vehicle. This research presents the results of tests conducted to assess the exposure of the driver and passengers to volatile organic compounds entering the vehicle with atmospheric air. The simulation researches were conducted on a chassis dynamometer at the Department of Vehicle Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technical University of Wroclaw and the tests under real conditions, i.e. traffic urban conditions, were taken as well. The measurements were conducted in the centre of Wroclaw during peak hours, when the traffic jam is the most frequent. The measurements were taken in order to organic compounds analysis, which includes gas chromatography. The analysis results were averaged from three measurements to get these studies more reliable. Results show that during mobile tests the vehicle was exposed to much more pollution than in the stationary tests in the simulated conditions of traffic congestion. Therefore, the studies present that the pollution in the traffic congestion is the real danger to drivers.

Volatile organic compounds are considered as one of the most harmful pollutants. Among them are hydrocarbons, which belongs to one of the chemicals groups monitored in the process of using vehicles. The article emphasized VOC toxicity in the light of the changes in the legislation on engine exhaust emissions. For the determination of volatile organic compounds, the exhaust gases of selected passenger cars were tested. Gas chromatography was used for the studies. The results have been verified with regard to the introduction of increasingly restrictive Euro standards. Furthermore this article discusses the issue related to the control of VOC emissions from internal combustion engines in cars as well as the attitude of vehicle users towards the adverse environmental conditions associated with the emission of toxins.
Lotne związki organiczne wymieniane są jako jeden z najbardziej szkodliwych czynników zanieczyszczających powietrze. Wśród nich znajdują się węglowodory, które stanowią jedną z grup związków chemicznych, monitorowaną w procesie eksploatacji pojazdów. W artykule zwrócono szczególną uwagę na toksyczność LZO w aspekcie wprowadzanych zmian norm prawnych dotyczących emisji spalin silnikowych do atmosfery. W celu oznaczenia lotnych związków organicznych przeprowadzono badania gazów wylotowych wybranych samochodów osobowych. Do badań wykorzystano metodę chromatografii gazowej. Wyniki zweryfikowano pod kątem wprowadzania coraz bardziej restrykcyjnych norm Euro. Podjęto dyskusję na temat kontroli emisji LZO z silników spalinowych przed wprowadzeniem samochodów do obrotu oraz postawy użytkowników pojazdów wobec niekorzystnego stanu środowiska związanego z emisją toksyn z emitorów mobilnych.

In this study, we investigate the changes in the concentrations of suspended particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and selected gaseous pollutants (VOCs, H2S) in the atmospheric air inside and outside a 9-story building, which is intended primarily for the teaching activities. The purpose was to determine whether the air quality inside the building is directly dependent on the outside air quality. The analysis also included the influence of the height of the building, its location and environment, as well as meteorological conditions. No clear correlation was found between the measured parameters inside and outside the building. The height above ground (the floor on which the measurements were made) was found to have a significant influence on the concentration of each pollutant. Wind direction was also found to have a very important impact on the air quality inside the building. A strong relationship was observed on the leeward side between the concentration of impurities on the inside and outside of the building.

Opis:
Investigations were carried out in the Department of Conservation of Painting and Polychrome Sculpture and in the Screen Printing Studio of the Faculty of Art at Nicolaus Copernicus University. Concentration of the vapours of organic solvents was measured in 2 workshops: the Art Conservation Studio and the Screen Printing Studio. This study attempts to evaluate the work environment in both studios by analysing the concentration of vapour solvents over 5 to 7 years of measurements. Volatile solvents—aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and ketones—were detected in investigated workplaces. These compounds have a wide range of applications in cleaning and removing old varnishes, lacquers and paints; inhalation is the main route of exposure. Vapour was collected using an active sampling method.

The aim of this paper is to estimate the mass concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E) and m-, p-, o-xylenes (X) inside of the driver-compartment of motor vehicles. The results were compared with the Czech limits for indoor environments and the external concentrations. The experiments were carried out on various routes with different methods of ventilation. The volatile emissions detected inside the vehicle were investigated in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. Cabin air was collected using desorption tubes and the samples were analysed by thermal desorption gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector coupled with a mass detector. VOC concentrations detected in the cabin of the vehicle ranged from 2.93 µg.m-3 to 7.96 µg.m-3 for benzene, 1.42 µg.m-3 to 4.38 µg.m-3. for toluene, 44.06 µg.m-3 to 152.00 µg.m-3 for ethylbenzene and 63.07 µg.m-3 to 479.62 µg.m-3 for xylenes. The indoor limit value for benzene, according to the Czech standard, is 7 µg.m-3. Levels of toluene were consistently below the Czech hourly standard, whose value according to the Czech standard is 300 µg.m-3. According to our findings, various methods of ventilation are an important factor influencing the BTEX pollution levels within the interior of the vehicle. In addition, this paper presents the influence results of benzene on the health of passengers inside the cabin of the vehicle. The results show that all age categories, especially children under the age of two, are exposed to increased health risks.
