Opis:
The VVR-S nuclear research reactor owned by Horia Hubulei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering was designed for research and radioisotope production being permanently shut-down in 2002 after 40 years of operation. The decommissioning of the reactor started in 2010 and is planned to be finalized in 2020, being the first nuclear research reactor that has started the decommissioning project from the South-East of Europe. This paper presents the lessons learned from the decommissioning of systems, structures, equipment and components from pumps room. The experiences gained cover a diverse range of topics from planning, approval, radiological characterization process made, dismantling, equipment used, resources, etc. Radiation protection and economics are the key factors for the selection of technology for decommissioning. The evaluation of the available technology has been made and areas for improving the technology have been identified. Dedicated and advanced technologies were chosen to perform specific tasks. The project was planned well in advance. Safety aspects have been taken into consideration. Resource constraints have also been an important issue considered in defining the decommissioning strategy. Experiences and knowledge were presented and shared with the community.

The VVR-S nuclear research reactor owned by Horia Hubulei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, has functioned between 1957 and 1997 at a nominal thermal power of 2 MW, using less-enriched nuclear fuel (10%), type EK-10, and highly enriched fuel (36%), type S-36. The reactor control was carried out by means of nine rods placed in the central part of the core. Four rods were used for the manual control of power, one for automatic control, three rods for reactor safety (emergency rods) and one for the fine control of power. One of the high hazard operations was the dismantling of the activated-contaminated control rods. Because of a higher radiological risk, simulation was performed to determine the expected maximum dose. The maximum gamma dose rate obtained using simulated results was 3.5 Sv/h, for the highly activated rod. In the real measurement, when the work was performed, the maximum gamma dose rate was 3 Sv/h. ⁹⁰Sr+⁹⁰Y are expected to be present in the control rods radioactivity.

The resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal diffusivity were determined for BiTe3 + Ag2Te composite mixtures. Subsequent measurements were carried out in the temperature range from 20 to 270°C, and for compositions from pure Bi2Te3 to xAg2Te = 0.65 selected along the pseudo-binary section of Ag-Bi-Te ternary system. It was found that conductivity vs. temperature dependence shows visible jump between 140 and 150°C in samples with highest Ag2Te content, which is due to monoclinic => cubic Ag2Te phase transformation. Measured Seebeck coefficient is negative for all samples indicating they are n-type semiconductors. Evaluated power factor is of the order 1.52·10-3 and it decreases with increasing Ag2Te content (at. %). Recalculated thermal conductivity is of the order of unity in W/(m K), and is decreasing with Ag2Te addition. Finally, evaluated Figure of Merit is 0.43 at 100°C and decreases with temperature rise.

Protective clothing can be used to absorb radiation because it is preferable to avoid the natural and artificial radiation exposure in our daily lives. There are many different types of fabric, used for clothes. In this study radiation absorbing properties of fabrics, which are widely used in the daily life, such as alpaca-type fabric, cotton fabric, cotton polyester blend fabric, woven dyed fabric and knitted fabric were examined using the image processing method.

The sintering behavior of p-type bismuth telluride powder is investigated by means of dilatometric analysis. The alloy powders, prepared by ball milling of melt-spun ribbons, exhibit refined and flake shape. Differential thermal analysis reveals that the endothermic peak at about 280°C corresponds to the melting of bismuth, and peaks existing between 410°C and 510°C are presumably due to the oxidation and crystallization of the powder. The shrinkage behavior of ball-milled powders was strongly dependent of heating rate by the thermal effect exerted on specimens. In the case of 2°C/min, the peak temperature for the densification is measured at 406°C, while the peak temperature at a heating rate of 20°C/min is approximately 443°C. The relative density of specimen pressureless-sintered at 500°C exhibited relatively low value, and thus further study is required in order to increase the density of sintered body.

In the present study, electroless Ni–P plating was applied to Bi–Te-based thermoelectric materials as a barrier layer and the effect of the Ni–P plating on the bonding strength of the thermoelectric module was investigated. The bonding strength of the n- and p-type modules increased after being subjected to the electroless Ni–P plating treatment. In the case of the thermoelectric module that was not subjected to electroless Ni–P plating, Sn and Te were interdiffused and formed a brittle Sn–Te-based metallic compound. The shearing mostly occurred on the bonding interface where such an intermetallic compound was formed. On the other hands, it was found from the FE-EPMA analysis of the bonding interface of thermoelectric module subjected to electroless Ni-P plating that the electroless Ni-P plating acted as an anti-diffusion layer, preventing the interdiffusion of Sn and Te. Therefore, by forming such an anti-diffusion layer on the surface of the Bi–Te based thermoelectric element, the bonding strength of the thermoelectric module could be increased.

Opis:
Motivations of Māori heritage language learners are explored within this qualitative study. Te reo Māori (the Māori language) is currently classed as endangered (Reedy et al., 2011), which calls for the exploration of the motivational experiences of Māori heritage language learners. A total of 19 interviews with beginner, intermediate and advanced level learners were conducted. Results demonstrated how Māori heritage learners were motivated to learn due to their cultural heritage connection to the language and to other ingroup members. This study explores some of the motivations why Māori heritage language learners learn te reo Māori. For this group of indigenous language learners, cultural and language revitalisation are tied to language motivation. Furthermore, the ability to participate in cultural practices was central to language motivations.

Opis:
We report on the Czochralski method for single silicon crystal growth and discuss heat and mass transfer and defect formation in the crystal. A reflector was used for separation of the heating and cooling areas in the furnace enabling us to speed up crystal growth. The melt flow to stabilize the temperature distribution in a crucible was controlled using transverse magnetic fields in a large-scale silicon Czochralski furnace. The setup allows for changes in important parameters of point defect formation to be made, such as vacancies and interstitials, by changing temperature and flow fields in the furnace. A numerical calculation was developed to predict the tendency for growth of a vacancy rich or interstitial rich crystal by estimating the value of the ratio between the growth rate and temperature gradient in the crystals.

This research began when observations were made on any-to-any-connection services that require QoS (Quality of Service) and tunnel measurements. Tunnel is a technique to interconnect between local networks that are separated through a public network. Research questions found looping caused by traffic issues when sending data in the MPLS service layer-2 tunneling service. Furthermore, this research hypothesis proposes optimizing QoS performance in the application of the SR-TE (Segment Routing-Traffic Engineering) method in the MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) network and analyzing traffic based on MAC addresses using the looping-protection method. This research contributes to optimizing the MPLS network and is a recommended solution for simplifying control-plane operation, especially the SR-TE method and looping-protection in the L2- VPN MPLS service. The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of MPLS networks, as well as analyze the application of L2-VPN (Layer 2 Virtual Private Network) MPLS networks. The targeted TKT (Technology Readiness Level) is 3rd-Level, which is an analytical and experimental proof of the MPLS tunnel network model on Layer-2 VPN services. The results of the research concluded that testing the SR-TE method is a solution to simplify the process of labeling data traffic that is global labelling, then the looping-protection method is a solution to eliminate looping indications. The QoS obtained has also shown an "excellent" category based on TIPHON standards.

The Sn-Ag-Cu-based solder paste screen-printing method has primarily been used to fabricate Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric (TE) modules, as Sn-based solder alloys have a low melting temperature (approximately 220°C) and good wettability with Cu electrodes. However, this process may result in uneven solder thickness when the printing pressure is not constant. Therefore, we suggested a novel direct-bonding method between the Bi2Te3-based TE elements and the Cu electrode by electroplating a 100 μm Sn/ 1.3 μm Pd/ 3.5 μm Ni bonding layer onto the Bi2Te3-based TE elements. It was determined that there is a problem with the amount of precipitation and composition depending on the pH change, and that the results may vary depending on the composition of Pd. Thus, double plating layers were formed, Ni/Pd, which were widely commercialized. The Sn/Pd/Ni electroplating was highly reliable, resulting in a bonding strength of 8 MPa between the thermoelectric and Cu electrode components, while the Pd and Ni electroplated layer acted as a diffusion barrier between the Sn layer and the Bi2Te3 TE. This process of electroplating Sn/Pd/Ni onto the Bi2Te3 TE elements presents a novel method for the fabrication of TE modules without using the conventional Sn-alloy-paste screen-printing method.

In this paper, we have reported a theoretical study of the mode conversion in two-dimensional magneto-photonic crystal waveguide. The structure is formed by a triangular lattice of air holes embedded in a composite matrix SiO2/ZrO2 or SiO2/TiO2. These new magneto-optical materials are developed by organic-inorganic sol-gel process and doped with ferrite of cobalt nanoparticles (CoFe2O4). The modal birefringence and conversion output have been calculated by varying, respectively, the film thickness and the magnetic nanoparticles concentration. The obtained results show an enhancement in the TE-TM mode conversion. Thus, when the amount of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles reaches 39% into sol-gel matrix, the efficiency can reach 95% which proves that such structures have very promising potential for creating integrated optical isolators.

First-principles density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the structural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of rubidium telluride in cubic anti-fluorite (anti-CaF2-type) structure. The calculated ground-state properties of Rb2Te compound such as equilibrium lattice parameter and bulk moduli are investigated by generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) that are based on the optimization of total energy. The elastic constants, Young’s and shear modulus, Poisson ratio, have also been calculated. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the available theoretical and experimental data. The pressure dependence of elastic constant and thermodynamic quantities under high pressure are also calculated and discussed.

This paper explores the influence of linear gear tip relief modification on power transmission efficiency. In real time applications gears experience transmission error (TE) during operation which increases noise and vibration and also results in increased tooth profile deformation during operation of the gear. By providing tip relief profile modification this TE can be decreased. Using MATLAB for computation and ANSYS for the simulation of deformation, stress, strain, life, and factor of safety results for the gear assemblies are obtained. Deformation results are used for the computation change in power transmission efficiency followed by the modal and harmonic analysis of the gears and gear assemblies to determine change in the first mode of natural frequency.

Developments in nuclear technology in the last century have lead to the use of radiation in different areas of human activity. These are not just the energetics but also food, agriculture, medicine, industry and science. Thus, radiation has become an inevitable phenomenon in our lives. Since we cannot isolate radiation from our life, the radiation protection methods should be available. As alternatives to conventional radiation prevention methods, such as lead and heavy concrete shielding, more functional materials need to become the focus of research. The development of the least harmful to the environment, easily applicable, flexible radiation shields has become very important. In this study, silicon matrix composite panels, doped with different ratios of barite and boron carbide, were produced and characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Gamma and neutron radiation shielding properties of these materials were investigated. The results have been compared with the lead as the standard shielding material.
