The purpose of the report is to determine trends in thermal conditions in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. The results of studies were compared with the results of analogous analyses, carried out for the area of lowland Poland. The study makes use of the data from the weather stations in Zakopane and on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 19512006, mainly from 1966-2006. The thermal conditions in lowland Poland was determined on the basis of the area-averaged time series (45 stations). Various thermal characteristics were considered. The increase of the rate of upward trend in temperature at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the change of the seasonal distribution of the warming in comparison with the preceding long-term periods, have been documented. Symptoms of increase of the thermal continentality have also been observed.

The paper is focused on the meso- and microstructural characteristics of selected shearing zones in the Western Tatra Mts. The domains of crystalline rocks studied (Długi Upłaz Ridge, Rakoń Mt., Zabraty Ridge and Zabrať Pass, Wołowiec Mt., Trzydniowiański Mt., Czubik Mt. and Jarząbczy Mt.) show evidences of heterogeneous shearing with development of shear zones. Four types of shear zones were distinguished: (1) ductile shear zones in gneisses, (2) brittle-ductile complex shear zones, (3) gneisses with clear later brittle deformation; (4) leucogranites, produced by anatexis with later brittle deformation. The development of these shear zones is characterised by occurrences of various types of fault rocks: cataclasites, S-C cataclasites and mylonites. The different shearing-related rocks and structures are interpreted as an effect of protolith diversity and strain partitioning. Shape-preferred orientation is an important structural feature of all the shearing-related rocks. Kinematic analyses revealed generally a southward sense of shearing documented by structures related to brittle conditions and northwards sense of shearing recognised in ductily sheared crystalline rocks. The time relationships between different shear zone types are discussed, leading to the conclusions that the 1st type of shear zone is pure Variscan, the 2nd type is Variscan with Alpine brittle deformation, and the 3rd and 4th types are mainly Alpine brittle deformations of Variscan syntectonic anatectic leucogranites.

The purpose of this study was to determine the contemporary changes of precipitation and nival conditions in the high-mountain area of Tatras. Main features of thermal climate changes are the background of this investigation. The study makes use of the daily data from the weather station on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 1966-2006. Various climate characteristics were considered. The increase of the air temperature is not accompanied by significant changes in precipitation conditions. The signs of the more continentality climate features are also visible. The warming and a slight decrease in precipitation and the evolution of circulation conditions significantly influence the length of the period with the snow cover and not significantly its depth.

The results of rainwater chemistry monitoring in the Tatra Mountains, Poland, during the periods 1993–1994 and 2002–2019 were used to determine long-term trends and the factors influencing rainwater chemistry in the last two decades. In the early 1990’s, the study area was characterized by prominent acid rains with a pH of 4.4 that affected surface water, meadows, and forest ecosystems. A rising pH temporal trend has been observed during the following years, indicating improving air quality. This trend has also been observed in measured ionic concentrations and reduced wet deposition loads of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing acid-forming compounds. The neutralization capacity of rainwater in Kasprowy Wierch increased over the last twenty years and has mostly been dominated by NH4 + . The ammonium availability index has been steadily increasing between years 2002 and 2019 but remains less than 1. This statistically significant relationship also indicates that a portion of neutralization occurs in the lower part of the atmosphere due to ammonium-related neutralization processes. The acidic potential (AP) and the ratio AP/NP (acidic potential/neutralization potential) have been declining during the same time. The stated trends in rainwater chemistry reflect the transformation to more environmentally sustainable economies in the region. Similar changes have been observed in neighboring countries in the region, including Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania.

Opis:
Fossil filamentous and non-filamentous bacteria are reported from the Upper Jurassic limestones of the Raptawicka Turnia Limestone Formation in the Mały Giewont sections of the Western Tatra Mountains (Poland). The filamentous bacteria are subdivided into five groups: thin uniseriate, large multi-cell, large spiral, tapering and branched forms. The thin uniseriate filaments are the main microbial component of the peloids and micro-oncoids from the studied formation, mainly in the Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian limestones. The presence of the heterocyte-like terminal cells suggests their interpretation as cyanobacteria similar to the modern order Nostocales and perhaps to the family Nostocaceae. The large multi-cell and tapering filaments are uncommon in the studied limestones. The branched filaments found in the Tithonian limestones, although thinner, probably also may be compared with some modern representatives of the order Nostocales. Non-filamentous fossil bacteria found in the studied limestones consist of rod-shaped bacilli, monotrichous bacilli and spirilla; they belong mainly to the phylum Proteobacteria. Some microborings observed in the microfossils occurring in the micro-oncoids remind the ichnotaxon Scolecia filosa Radtke known to be of wide palaeobathymetric range. The thinnest microborings resemble another group of ichnofossils named “Pygmy form”, probably also of bacterial origin. The Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian micro-oncoids were formed mainly by filamentous bacteria (Cyanobacteria) that overgrew successively their nuclei with a few to several laminae. Frequent occurrence of pelagic microfossils as nuclei of micro-oncoids does not match a transport of these coated grains from much shallower sedimentary environments. The fossil filamentous bacteria filling up the peloids and micro-oncoids could be adapted to conditions that existed in the sublittoral zone below the wave base.

In the Kopka section (Dolina Kościeliska valley, Western Tatra Mountains), the upper part of the Kościeliska Marl Formation consists of biomicrites with marly interbeds. These deposits, 76 m thick, are assigned to the Praehedbergella excelsa and Leupoldina cabri zones, of Aptian age. The taxa identified belong mainly to the genera Praehedbergella Gorbachik and Moullade, 1973, Globigerinelloides Cushman and Ten Dam, 1948 (emended by Longoria 1974 and Verga and Premoli Silva, 2003a) and Gorbachikella Banner and Desai, 1988. Nineteen Nannoconus taxa were identified during an SEM study of 34 samples. The occurrence of N. vocontiensis in the higher part of the section allows the nannoconid assemblages in the upper part of the section to be distinguished from those in the lower part. Four Nannoconus assemblages were recognized in these limestones: (1) Nannoconus bucheri-N. steinmannii, (2) N. truitti frequens, (3) N. vocontiensis and (4) N. aff. regularis. The wide-canal Nannoconus specimens are more frequent than the narrow-canal ones in the limestones of earliest Aptian age (Praehedbergella excelsa Zone), but the wide-canal forms predominate consistently in the upper part of the section, still within the L. cabri Zone.

Opis:
In the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) metamorphic complex, kyanite-quartz segregations with biotite-rich selvage occur in mylonitized mica schists. In this paper, the problem of fluid flow and aluminium mobility during the uplift of the crystalline massif, and the position of the segregations in the history of Western Tatra metamorphic complex, is adressed. The reaction Alm + Rt Ilm + Ky + Qtz is considered to be the result of a pressure drop from above to below 9 kbar. Ti-in-biotite geothermometry shows the temperature range to be 579- 639ºC that is related to heating and decompression associated with granite intrusion. Major-element mass-balance calculations show that Al remained stable in the selvage + segregation system whereas other elements (e.g. Cr, HFSE) were mobilized. The kyanite-quartz segregations formed from local fluids generated during dehydration of the metapelitic rocks during uplift. The main mechanism was likely diffusion-driven mass-transfer into extensionrelated cracks.

In 2013–2014, a set of 30 pheromone traps baited with synthetic lures attracting I. duplicatus (Duplodor – 15 traps) and I. cembrae (Cembrodor – 15 traps) was installed in 6 altitudinal transects (1000–1400 m a.s.l., every 100 m of elevation) in the eastern, central and western part of the Tatra National Park (TPN) in Poland and operated during the entire growing season. The main aim of the survey was to check if and to what vertical extent these two species of bark beetles, not yet recorded, are presently distributed in TPN. Collected insects, including non-target Scolytinae and Cerambycidae, were determined. Overall 1896 Scolytid bark beetles belonging to 13 species, all occurring in the whole elevation range, were collected. I. duplicatus (28 specimens in total) was collected in the whole elevation profile, similarly as I. cembrae (718 specimens in total). Among Cerambycidae (282 individuals) belonging to 19 species, Rhagium inquisitor and Pidonia lurida, found on all elevations, were the most abundant; 8 species were collected on the highest locality. Pogonocherus decoratus was found for the first time in the Tatra. Results indicate the upward spreading of the studied insects as a possible effect of climate change and the resulting environmental conditions favourable for those organisms.

Opis:
Natural environment of the Slovak High Tatra Mountains, including landforms, underwent a rapid change. On November 19, 2004, following a disastrous bora, a blowdown area was formed covering 12,600 hectares, and bearing nearly 3 million cubic metres of fallen wood. Necessary forest clearing works related to damage mitigation began in spring 2005. These consisted in cutting and taking down the wood using heavy machinery and vehicles. Intensive after-disaster works led, however, to changes in the depth and density of cart roads. The aim of this paper is to estimate the direction and rate of changes within road dissections after intensive forest works. To achieve this task, the results of measurements of the depth of road incision along selected profiles situated at places differing by inclination and the type of exploitation were used. The collected data point to dominant, although minor role of accumulation processes over erosive ones, the latter being important during the period of relatively not intensive road exploitation. The most important factor contributing to such a denudation balance of gently inclined (up to 20 centigrade) roads appears to be human impact, dominating over properties of natural environment. Hence, termination of intensive road exploitation and introduction of anti-erosive measures, such as steps on steeper (more than 15 centigrade) road segments, are most effective when preventing erosion processes within the latter in the blowdown area in the Slovak High Tatra Mountains.

During its entire utilisation history - lasting several hundred years - the area of the Tatra Mountains underwent multidirectional anthropopressure. As the result, all components of their natural environment have been transformed, including relief and water conditions. The analysis of the literature on this topie conducted by the author, as well as his observations performed in the area, confirmed the assumption that transformations caused by human actions developed with varying intensity and admitted various forms depending on the area of action and the magnitude of means applied. The transformation scalę presented here estimates the influence of anthropopressure on the stability of the catchment area systems of larger Tatra streams, partial catchment areas of their confluents and selected slope surfaces. In systems, where the limits of persistence were not exceeded, stability was ensured by natural processes compensating for the conseąuences of anthropopressure. In systems where stability was disturbed, planned preventive measures are necessary.

Fault rocks in brittle and brittle-ductile shear zones played a key role in the evolution of the Western Tatra Mountains crystal- line rocks (Poland-Slovakia). Microfabrics of these rocks, including grain shape analyses, were investigated in the six areas of the Western Tatra Mountains. Based on studies of thin sections, 14 types of fault rock microfabric are distinguished, ac- cording to the following criteria: (a) the presence and abundance levels of a cataclastic matrix and (b) the presence and form of a preferred orientation features. General tendencies observed in these areas indicate southwards increasing non-coaxial deformation as well as the domination of ultracataclasites or ultramylonites to phyllonites in areas with negative relief (e.g., sedlo Zabrat’ Pass, Dziurawa Przełęcz Pass). A model of shear zone evo l u tion embracl ng foll owl ng three stages is pro- posed: (1) deformation partitioning and block-controlled cataclastic flow, (2) matrix-controlled cataclastic flow, (3) selective leaching and deposition of silica, leading to the formation of softened and hardened deformation domains respectively. These microstructural observations were supported by statistical analyses of the grain shape indicators (compactness, isometry, ellipticity, solidity, convexity). Two trends of relationships between compactness and convexity were noted: the first, horizontal on the correlation diagrams, was interpreted as an effect of rapid cataclasis and then sericitization, the sec- ond, with a strongly negative correlation coefficient, was considered as an effect of long-term cataclastic flow. The different microfabric data and microstructural interpretations described in this paper are consistent with a new model of the tectonic history of the Western Tatra Mountains evolution, with an important role for a non-coaxial deformation during Alpine orogeny in brittle and brittle-ductile conditions.

In this work, we present the results of valorisation of geosites for the geotourist path in the lower part of the Chochołowska Valley, with particular emphasis on tourist activity of people using wheelchairs and elderly people with motor disabilities. Five geosites were valorized: (1) Siwiańskie Turnie Outcrop, (2) Wielkie Koryciska Rock Gate, (3) Chochołowski Stream Riverbed, (4) Niżna Chochołowska Gate, (5) Chochołowskie Karst Spring. Selected geosites are easily accessible by people with limited mobility, including wheelchairs. They are located along a wide, flat asphalt road on the distance of 3.5 km and the altitude difference of 100 metres. Various sedimentary rocks, such as limestones, marls, and dolomites can be seen in geosites. These rocks represent two geological-tectonic structures, the so-called: Choč Nappe (geosies: Siwiańskie Turnie Outcrop, Wielkie Koryciska Rock Gate) and Krížna Nappe (geosite Niżna Chochołowska Gate). Two more characteristic phenomena can be observed: hydrogeological phenomena related to the karst processes seen in Chochołowskie Karst Spring, and geomorphological phenomena observed in Chochołowski stream riverbed. The results of valorisation showed that the evaluated geosites of the geoturistic path have very high geotouristic values. This indicates that the lower part of the Chochołowska Valley has a high geotouristic potential for people using wheelchairs and elderly people with motor disabilities who already are, or want to become active geoturists. Benefit of creating of this type of geotourist paths is the expansion of the tourist offer and the development of services in the Podhale region, with particular emphasis on the people with physical disabilities.
