Opis:
The aim of the presented paper was to describe the wear mechanisms operating at the small length scale in multilayer coatings subjected to a mechanical testing. A hybrid PLD system (Pulsed Laser Deposition connected with magnetron sputtering) was used for the multi-layer coating deposition. Coatings were subjected to indentation, ball-on disc wear and scratch adhesion tests. Microstructure of the as-deposited coating and after mechanical tests was studied using the Scanning (SEM) and the Transmission (TEM) Electron Microscopes. The research work revealed that application of innovative multilayer coatings may allow to predict their life time and to steer their properties.
Celem pracy było określenie mechanizmów zużycia wielowarstwowych powłok tribologicznych, poddanych testom mechanicznym na zużycie. Powłoki wytwarzane przy zastosowaniu hybrydowego układu PLD (technika laserowej ablacji połączona z rozpylaniem magnetronowym) poddane zostały mechanicznym testom na zużycie (indentacja oraz test kula-tarcza), a także testowi przylegania powłoki do podłoża (test zarysowania). Charakterystykę mikrostruktury powłok przed i po testach mechanicznych przeprowadzono za pomocą skaningowej (SEM) oraz transmisyjnej (TEM) mikroskopii elektronowej. Badania wykazały, że poprzez stosowanie innowacyjnych powłok wielowarstwowych można przewidzieć czas ich eksploatacji oraz dają możliwość sterowania właściwościami.

Opis:
Morphology changes of C–Pd films prepared in physical vapor deposition (PVD) process and next annealed in a temperature of 650 °C during different time were studied. These studies were performed with electron microscopy methods (scanning SEM and transmission TEM). It was found that not annealed films are flat and they are composed of grains with composite character and size of 100–200 nm. Pd nanocrystallite of a diameter of a few nanometers in some carbon matrix was placed in these grains. For annealed films, a formation of palladium nanograins with different sizes and shapes as well as a porous carbon matrix were observed. High resolution TEM investigation was used to determine a structure of all these grains. An increase in duration time of annealing process led to diminishing of the porosity of carbon matrix and a number of Pd grains situated on the film surface. It was also stated that covering of Si with SiO2 layer prevents formation of palladium silicide.

This paper deals with the bio-synthesis of silver nano-particles using a soil fungi. In this work, FTIR examinations indicated that the encountered soil particles actually contained Silver particles, while XRD analysis confirmed the silver was in the nano-crystalline phase. Moreover, the hurried decline of silver (Ag+) ions monitored using UV-visible spectrophotometer, demonstrated that these silver nano-particles formed within 19 minutes. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the synthesized silver nano-particles come in a size ranging between 16-57 nm and have a variety of shapes, including round, rod and uneven. The present study thus concludes that silver nano-particles were actually produced and that these have admirable antibacterial activity. The current study also indicates that increasing concentration increases the rate of reduction and decreases the particle size.

Opis:
The paper describes the preparation and characteristics of films composed of Pd nanograins placed in carbonaceous matrix. Films were obtained in PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process from two sources containing: the first one – fullerene powder and the second one – palladium acetate. The topographical, morphological and structural changes due to different parameters of PVD process were studied with the use of Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy, whereas the structure was studied with the application of the Transmission Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy methods. It was shown that topographical changes are connected with the decomposition ratio of Pd acetate as well as the form of carbonaceous matrix formed due to this decomposition. Palladium nanograins found in all films exhibit the fcc structure type and their diameter changes from 2 nm to 40 nm depending on the PVD process parameters.

Opis:
This paper presents research results of zinc oxide thin films deposited on a glass substrate with use of ALD method. Our researches focused on analyzing of the influence of ALD deposition process temperature on the morphology and transparency of thin layers. The morphology was examined using both scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Transparency study was performed by UV-VIS spectroscopy. For our experiments, two sets of the coating have been prepared, differing in temperature and number of cycle used during the preparation process. The first set was deposited in 100 cycles, second one in 500 cycles. Each set of tested coating contained samples prepared at different temperatures.

Three plants extracts were used for biosynthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs nucleation process requires effective reduction agents which secure Ag+ to Ag0 reduction and also stabilizing/capping agents. The UV-vis and TEM observation revealed that the best results were obtained by R. officinalis leaf extract. The strong SPR band peak appeared at the wavelength 418 nm. Synthetized AgNPs were globular, fine (~20 nm), uniform and stabile throughout the experiment. A rapid rate of AgNPs synthesis was also significant and economically advantageous factor. Fine (10-20 nm) and globular nanoparticles were synthetized also by U. dioica leaf extract, but the stability of nanoparticles was not permanent. Despite V. vitis-idaea fruit extract contains a lot of reducing agents, UV-vis did not confirm the presence of AgNPs in solution. Synthetized Ag particles were very unstable, Ag particles agglomerated very fast and clearly indicated sediment was formed.

The results of structure observations of Ni base superalloy subjected to long-term influence of high pressure hydrogen atmosphere at 750K and 850K are presented. The structure investigation were carried out using conventional light-, scanning- (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results presented here are supplementary to the mechanical studies given in part I of this investigations. The results of study concerning mechanical properties degradation and structure observations show that the differences in mechanical properties of alloy subjected different temperature are caused by more advanced processes of structure degradation during long-term aging at 850K, compare to that at 750K. Higher service temperature leads to formation of large precipitates of δ phase. The nucleation and growth of needle- and/or plate-like, relative large delta precipitates proceed probably at expense strengthening γ" phases. Moreover, it can't be excluded that the least stable γ" phase is replaced with more stable γ' precipitates. TEM observations have disclosed differences in dislocation structure of alloy aged at 750K and 850K. The dislocation observed in alloy subjected to 750K are were seldom observed only, while in that serviced at high stress and 850K dislocation array and dislocation cell structure was typical.

Opis:
In this study, the early stage of aging in Mg-Gd-Y alloys has been observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high angle annular dark field – scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and calculations of images and electron density and bond overlap population (BOP) by first principal to understand the origin of precipitation in this alloy. The small hexagon of 0.37 nm is the first precipitate in this alloy, and this is the evidence of short range ordering of D019 structure. This is referred as the pre β”-phase. In the peak aged condition, β’ phase with bco structure was mainly observed.
W pracy przedstawiono mikroskopowe obserwacje TEM wczesnego etapu starzenia stopów Mg-Gd-Y. Ponadto badania prowadzono z użyciem skaningowej transmisyjnej mikroskopii elektronowej. Wykorzystano zjawisko niekoherentnego rozpraszania w ciemnym polu i materiał obrazowano przy pomocy detektora pierścieniowego, który zbiera elektrony rozproszone pod dużymi kątami (HAADF-STEM). Przeprowadzono także analizę obrazów, obliczenie gęstości elektronowej i ilości nakładających się wiązań w celu zrozumienia źródła wydzieleń w ww. stopie. Pierwszym wytrąceniem w stopie jest mały sześciokąt o wielkości 0,37 nm, a dowodem tego jest uporządkowanie krótkiego zasięgu struktury D019.

Structural properties of various kinds of room-temperature synthesized C60 fullerene nanowhiskers were investigated by TEM and XRD. The C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of toluene lost their initial solvated hexagonal structure faster than the C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of m-xylene. The hexagonal structure of C60 nanowhiskers prepared by use of toluene was stabilized by adding C60[C(COOC2H5)2]. These results suggest that large solute molecules in the C60 nanowhisker matrix stabilize their initially solvated hexagonal structure. Furthermore, the addition of a sufficient amount of C60(2-methoxycarbonyl-N-methylpyrrolidine) into the m-xylene solution of C60 produced the C60 nanowhiskers indicating the formation of ordered solid solution of C60 and C60(2-methoxycarbonyl-N-methylpyrrolidine).

InWO3-InMoO3 loaded-TiO2 nanomaterial was synthesised by co-precipitation method and sonication technique. The nanomaterial was characterized by High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) with elementary dispersive X-ray (EDX), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic activity of InWO3-InMoO3 loaded-TiO2 nanomaterial was studied from the photodegradation of methyl green (MEG) and methylene blue (MB) under UV-light irradiation at 365 nm. The hydroxyl radical formation in the mechanism was confirmed by fluorescence quenching technique. The mineralization confirmed by chemical oxygen demand measurements. A flaxisible mechanism is proposed for higher catalytic activity of InWO3-InMoO3-TiO2 under UV-light for 365 nm. This catalyst was found to be stable and reusable without appreciable loss of catalytic activity up to five cycles. The InWO3- InMoO3 loaded-TiO2 nanomaterial on MEG was high photocatalytic activity that of MB so high photocatalytic activity has been discussed by first order kinetics, rate constant value and high quantum yield. This material was showed increased hydrophobicity that of TiO2 electrochemical study and antibacterial activity of the analysis was also studied.

This paper reports on the results of optimization of the ohmic contacts for GaAs/AlGaAs quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). Technological parameters during the optimization procedure concerned time and temperature of thermal processing as also the ratio of metallic layers thickness. The main goal of this work was to obtain stable ohmic contacts with low resistance and a smooth surface. Circular transmission line method (CTLM) was applied for the electrical characterization of the Ni/AuGe/Ni/Au and AuGe/Ni/Au metallization systems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method was used for the characterization of microstructures. Elements concentration in layers was determined by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The best results for the specific contacts resistivity, thermal stability and morphology were obtained when the Ni/AuGe/Ni/Au and the AuGe/Ni/Au systems were processed at 440 °C and 400 °C, respectively.

TiO2 nanomaterial was prepared by precipitation method and sonication technique. The nanomaterial was characterized by HR-SEM with EDX, TEM, XRD, FT-IR and PL analysis. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 was much better than that of TiO2–P25 under UV-light irradiation at 365 nm. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated from the photodegradation of malachite green (MAG). The influence of operational parameters such as the effect of catalyst loading dye concentration and chemical oxygen demand measurements had also been investigated. The Photodegradation was found to follow the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Hydroxyl radical formation in the mechanism was confirmed by fluorescence quenching technique. It was proposed that the catalyst is found to be stable and reusable.

The article presents the investigation results of microstructural, chemical composition changes after clad layers of Inconel 625 and Inconel 686 alloys weld overlaid on boiler tubes. The boiler tubes made of 16Mo3 steel were cladded in the Boiler Factory SEFAKO S.A. using CMT technique. The microstructure and chemical composition of coatings were analysed using light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The value of the partition coefficient k was determined for Inconel 625 and Inconel 686 clad layers. The value was calculated by dividing the average content (% wt.) of Ni, Cr, Mo, Fe, Nb and W.
