Opis:
Entrepreneurship has become a critical competency in the 21st century. Higher education (HE) institutions, aware of the need to answer market needs, have started several initiatives to develop entrepreneurial education. However, the concept of social entrepreneurship does not seem to be widely known among graduates. The aim of the article is an attempt to assess entrepreneurial competencies and knowledge in the field of social entrepreneurship. The authors have focused on the teaching of social entrepreneurship, an undervalued element of entrepreneurial education in HE institutions. For that purpose, a case study of a course introduced at the academic level was used, which allowed answering the following questions: Is social entrepreneurship known among students as a possibility for entrepreneurial development? How do they assess a course in social entrepreneurship regarding its usefulness and ability to develop competencies? The study shows that social entrepreneurship seems to be a form that is not well recognised, which means that students do not even have the chance to know the whole entrepreneurship picture. Researwch has shown students’ positive approach to a course devoted to social entrepreneurship and its potential to develop the knowledge and skills to run one’s venture in the future. The results are a part of a broader trend related to the need for social entrepreneurship in HE institutions.

The article aims to analyse the development of social entrepreneurship in the entrepreneurial ecosystem’s context based on the example of three countries: Poland, Italy and North Macedonia. The theoretical framework for the analysis and interpretation of the results is determined by new institutional economics and entrepreneurship theories. In turn, the empirical part is based on the analysis of selected indicators on the development of social entrepreneurship; a diagnostic survey has also been carried out among stakeholders (representatives of entities related to social entrepreneurship), and young people in Poland, Italy and North Macedonia. The analysis allows for the of the leading research hypothesis which assumes that one of the most essential and basic elements of the social entrepreneurship ecosystem is knowledge, and its low level within society is a barrier to its development. To make the most of its potential, and increase employment in social enterprises, it is essential to integrate social entrepreneurship with mainstream entrepreneurship and business education.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of the research is to assess whether the young generation in Poland has the potential to build sustainable companies by evaluating the attitudes of university students towards sustainable entrepreneurship.. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The readiness to create a sustainable enterprise was assessed on the basis of self-assessment of pro-social attitudes, business intentions and knowledge of social and environmental aspects in business with the use of multidimensional analysis based on machine learning methods. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: A significant challenge for policymakers, scientists and entrepreneurs is solving important social and environmental problems through the development of sustainable entrepreneurship. The implementation of this concept requires efforts to educate and shape pro-social attitudes, especially among the young generation. Therefore, the research focuses on identifying and assessing the attitudes and awareness level of pro-social aspects in business and recognition of entrepreneurial intentions among representatives of this generation. RESEARCH RESULTS: The research results show that young people have an intuitive sense of what sustainable business is all about, but the formal knowledge in this area is low. Financial aspects, i.e. the possibility of obtaining significant income from own business, as well as independence and the possibility of being a manager, turned out to be much more motivating for entrepreneurship than the possibility of changing the world for the better, helping local communities or protecting the environment. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The innovative approach to multidimensional data analysis highlighted the lack of knowledge and insufficient level of pro-social attitudes among the young generation, which is a particularly worrying phenomenon in the context of formulated challenges and social and environmental needs.

The purpose of this article is to analyse educational activities undertaken in the area ofsocial entrepreneurship. The main conclusions are that respondents do not know about social entrepreneurship and social initiatives are undertaken only to a minimal extent; education for social entrepreneurship is at an unacceptable level. Thus, education in economics in Poland should be enriched with social economy and social entrepreneurship. An essential element that can positively affect the development of social entrepreneurship is the support of social activities undertaken by young people within a broader debate about the social dimension of our lives.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to provide insights into the views of SE and SI experts from different settings on university education in these two fields. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: SEE 1 has been gaining significant interest following development of the research field. However, literature is scarce in this area, and the empirical work on SEE is almost nonexistent. The research is based on the SE and SI ecosystem development projects run by two neighbouring cities in Poland. Using inductive approach, the author presents qualitative data from group discussions and semi-structured interviews among experts from different settings. Grounded theory methods are used to generate key categories representing direction for SEE and SIE development. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Based on review of literature and analysis of gathered data, the author provides key guiding directions for SEE and SIE development. First, their main features emerging from literature are presented. Next, the research design and key findings are presented. RESEARCH RESULTS: Research results indicate the need for encompassing approach when designing key directions for SE and SI education. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The findings show that SEE should be extended beyond business school environment. Also, educational model should be constantly refined in response to stakeholders’ needs, also academia should include community and other stakeholders, also from other fields and disciplines. The engaging approach in educational setting draws attention to university contexts, expose SEE to local problems and construct them accordingly. Also, SEE requires significant efforts in promoting SE phenomenon and the education itself, to gain legitimacy and engage dedicated individuals and organizations.

The role of Catholic social teaching has been attributed to the promotion of moral values and principles that should be considered when establishing or evaluating a given social, economic, or political system. This also applies to smaller structures, specific institutions, concepts, and practical social solutions, which may include social entrepreneurship. The article aims to confirm the hypothesis that, taking into account the principles of Catholic social teaching in the process of discovering the axionormative determinants of social entrepreneurship allows its deeper understanding and more effective implementation of its praxeological goals. At the beginning of the paper, the author emphasises the common source of all general and specific axionormative criteria of the two analysed disciplines – the dignity of a human person. Further deliberations revolve around other values and principles, such as the value of human work and entrepreneurship, the common good, the universal destination of goods, the preferential option for the poor, solidarity, subsidiarity, and participation.

Social ventures represent a new type of organization that aim to create sustainable social value, such as promoting the well-being of communities and their existence is based on developing solutions to tackle complex social problems. Developing a suitable business model for a social venture is crucial because the right model with a sustainable value offering in its core can support the venture and direct it toward self-sustainability and competitiveness. Research on social venture business models has been so far limited and particularly innovation in business models needs more inquiry. Through an in-depth case study, we aim to extend the understanding how business models of social ventures can meet these goals and how the business model elements interact with each other. The study findings indicate that opportunity recognition which is followed by innovative resource mobilization and integration can turn into a well-functioning business-model that serves the desired ends, creating social value and help to achieve self-sustainability. Furthermore, establishing the right interconnections between the business model elements was found to support the development of an efficient social venture business model.

Social entrepreneurship has always been a contested concept, both within the academic discourse and in practice. A lot of scholarly effort has been put into analyzing the different definitions of social entrepreneurship and the negative consequences that the definitional debate has on the opportunity to advance social entrepreneurship as a research field. Very little is known about what the consequences of the multiple meanings of social entrepreneurship are for people working in the sector. This paper advances knowledge on this topic by looking at the social entrepreneurship sector in England and by investigating through qualitative research methods what sector members think about social entrepreneurship and its unclear boundaries. The results show that there are three different conceptions of social entrepreneurship within the sector in England. However, while everyone agrees on the presence of a definitional debate, opinions on what this means for the sector are several. Some members think it is something positive; some others think it is causing different issues, and a third group considers it as irrelevant.

Opis:
Social entrepreneurs, very often operate with highly limited resources, not to say with virtually nothing. They possess motivation, but apart from financial or technical resources very often they also need complex set of skills, especially those connected with leadership. Social entrepreneurship is similar to business entrepreneurship in many way, however there are some differences. Both similarities and differences can be find in theoretical papers, however there is a limited number of research which prove them. A research conducted in 2014 among 76 respondents, engaged in business and social activities, proved that to some extent social and business entrepreneurs have some common features, however some of them are unique for each of this entrepreneurship type.

Opis:
Entrepreneurship as a field of research has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers for decades. In particular, social entrepreneurship is emerging as a research area that is attracting increased research interest among researchers globally. Among the various factors which influence social entrepreneurship intentions is attitude, risk taking propensity and proactive personality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of attitude, risk taking propensity and proactive personality on social entrepreneurship intentions among university students. A quantitative research approach was adopted for the study. A questionnaire was administered to two hundred and ninety four (n=294) students from selected universities in the Gauteng province, South Africa. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the influence of attitude, risk taking propensity and proactive personality on social entrepreneurial intentions. Preliminary analyses were conducted to ensure no violation of assumptions of normality, linearity, multicollinearity and homoscedasticity. Upon testing the significance of the independent variables, the results showed that in the model, only two variables were statistically significant, with risk taking propensity showing a higher beta value (beta=.540, p=<.000) than attitude towards entrepreneurship scale (beta=.259, P<.000). In order of importance, these results mean that risk taking propensity represented the most unique contribution towards social entrepreneurial intentions followed by attitude. Proactive personality did not make a unique contribution. It was concluded that social entrepreneurial intentions of university students are driven by their attitude and willingness to take risks.
Kwestionariusz został przekazany do wypełnienia dwustu dziewięćdziesięciu czterem studentom (n = 294) z wybranych szkół wyższych w prowincji Gauteng w Republice Południowej Afryki. W celu oceny wpływu postawy, skłonności do podejmowania ryzyka i proaktywnej osobowości na intencje przedsiębiorców społecznych, zastosowano wielokrotną regresję liniową. Wstępne analizy zostały przeprowadzone w celu niedopuszczenia do naruszenia założeń normalności, liniowości, współliniowości i homoskedastyczności.

The aim of the article is to indicate and describe the normative assumptions of the professional ethics of social entrepreneurs. The innovative nature of the proposed concept consists in taking into consideration the perspective of Christian personalist ethics. It is a theory of morality which includes considerations for the biblical and theological view of man, emphasizing above all their personal dignity. Referring to the principal axioms of this ethical doctrine allows for a presentation of a proposal of ethical principles and moral virtues – adequate to the mission, tasks, and vocation of social entrepreneurs. The article discusses the following issues: the essence of Christian personalist ethics, the mission and tasks of social entrepreneurs, the motivation and vocation of social entrepreneurs, ethical aspects of leadership in social enterprises, as well as the ethical principles and moral virtues of social entrepreneurs. A methodology characteristic of normative philosophical ethics and moral theology was applied. The results of the analysis of the methodically selected literature on the subject were processed by means of conceptual work, which allowed us to describe the professional ethics of social entrepreneurs from the point of view of Christian personalist ethics. Christian personalist ethics makes a valuable and original contribution to the description of the normative determinants of social entrepreneurship. The analysis of the mission and tasks of social entrepreneurs shows that they create social structures and processes that affirm the dignity of marginalized people and restore their capacity to participate in social and economic life.

Purpose: The article presents business models developed in organizations of the “new cooperativism” trend, whose application leads to a bottom-up solution of important social problems at the local level and, in a broader perspective, stimulation of sustainable development. Methodology: The adopted methodology uses a qualitative approach. The research was conducted in the form of case studies of four organizations following “new cooperativism,” based on in-depth interviews, observations, and analyses of organizational documents and various types of publicly available materials. Findings: The study showed that “new cooperativism” organizations use in their business models the old practices developed by classical cooperatives, which work well in today’s conditions and have the potential to provide a positive impact on important socioeconomic dysfunctions, which can be fully implemented through modern technologies. Research Limitations: The limitations typical of the case study method entail the uncertainty of results replication, which disallows their broad generalization. However, the obtained results indicate the need to conduct a scientific diagnosis of emerging collaborative grassroots organizations and the importance of their participation in the three-sector economic concept of the state. Originality: The article and its conclusions are based on empirical research of the practical effectiveness of business models used in organizations of the “new cooperativism” trend.

Opis:
Social entrepreneurship3, as a field of research, has gained enormous interest of academics in management and entrepreneurship literature for almost 30 years now. Also, scholars in other intellectual domains like economics, finance, marketing, political science, sociology and few others, have found it fascinating. As a term, it is common in public discourses and has found interest among policy makers, corporations, media, different groups of practitioners and professionals. As a phenomenon it is not new, although the SE term has been only recently coined (Banks, 1972; Drucker, 1979). For far more than two centuries great individuals and groups have tried to tackle the societal challenges, using economic means, such as the Rochdale Pioneers who inspired cooperative ideals, and Florence Nightingale – an English nurse and social activist, who changed the patient care landscape (Nicholls, 2006). Many of the ventures and actions of social initiatives can be traced to the earlier, medieval or even ancient times. Today, social initiatives and social enterprise have emerged in particular countries and regions as a result of their historical institutional trajectories, and “social enterprise landscape ZOO” (Young & Brewer, 2016) has become very heterogeneous. The interest of management and entrepreneurship research into the phenomenon has resulted in an unprecedented increase in scholarly output. The historical analysis of SE research (Moss, Lumpkin & Short, 2017) published in key journals and databases shows an increase from one paper to 45 papers published per year between 1990 and 2010. SE centers established in universities like Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge have designed degree programmes, dedicated textbooks, and separate SE conferences, special journals like Social Enterprise Journal, Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and many more have been introduced for educational and publication purposes. SE has become popular as a response to the inabilities of governments and business to solve pressing social problems, including poverty, social exclusion, and environmental issues. All of the above are manifested in the diversity of different SE initiatives. Thus, we express our interest to explain and predict SE and social enterprise as phenomena, to identify related antecedents and outcomes, but also to look into the box of SE processes. This special issue attempts to respond to this interest. Diverse methodological approaches including descriptive, explanatory or exploratory ones are included in the papers in this issue. SE phenomenon is studied on an individual, organizational, and even a macro level. Different data is employed: current or archival data, primary or secondary, referring to different country settings such as Taiwan, Poland, Italy and England. Through the inclusion of such diverse perspectives and context, this issue works as a holistic approach to the phenomenon under analysis. In the following sections of this paper, we first provide a succinct overview of SE as a phenomenon and research field. We summarize the definitional debate and point to valuable theoretical frameworks for studying SE. Next, we introduce individual authors’ contributions to the issue and, finally, we propose further suggestions for future research.
