    The article explores the problem of nursing as a practical discipline and suggests that there are several kinds of nursing science. Following the lead of Jacques Maritain and Yves R. Simon, the authoress begins with an account of the distinguishing characteristics of theoretical knowledge, to which the term “science” has historically been applied, and distinguishes it from practical knowledge or prudence. Next she reviews Maritain and Simon’s discussion of two intermediate levels of inquiry that share some characteristics of both science and practical knowledge. Finally, using the writings of several nurse theorists whose seminal ideas in this area have established a basis for nurse theorist’s discussion of these issues, she distinguishes four kinds of nursing inquiry which range from the very theoretical to the very practical.

    The article attempts to summarise the work of Simon Steen-Andersen and describe his composition titled Black Box Music in the context of fusing visual and musical experiences. I have examined how modern technology influences the composer’s creative process. His achievements and understanding of audiovisuality and the music object have also been compared with Pierre Schaeffer’s concept of acousmatic listening.

    W niniejszym artykule, odwołując się do analizy etymologicznej, przedstawiona jest nowa hipoteza o pochodzeniu nazwisk mitologicznych pruskich Worskaito / Borsskayto (S. Grunau), oraz Jaćwingów – Wourschkaite (Książeczka Sudawska). Przywołana analiza dotyczy opisu derywacji i rozwoju semantycznego tych mitonimów. Podsumowując wyniki tej analizy, można stwierdzić, że nazwiska mitologiczne Worskaito / Borsskayto, Wourschkaite należy do złożeń typu tatpuruṣa pochodzenia niemieckiego (wczesno-nowo-wysoko-niemieckiego oraz średnio-dolno-niemieckiego), tj. te mitonimy pochodzą z wnwn. war-seger, war-sager / śrdn. war-seger, wâr-sager ‘jasnowidz, czarodziej, wróżbita, tj. śrłac. veridicus’.

    The article aims to analyse four important point of view novels, namely Henry James’ The Ambassadors, Zasypie wszystko, zawieje [Everything Will Be Covered by the Snow] by Włodzimierz Odojewski, The Flanders Road by Claude Simon, and Morfina [Morphine] by Szczepan Twardoch. The notion of point of view serves as a starting point for considering the epistemological aspects of the novel and for tracing its evolution. James, both in his theory and novelistic practice, uses the point of view to make the character’s consciousness the main theme of his novels. Odojewski employs internal monologue to render the characters’ perspective, while Simon combines internal monologue with other voices. Finally, Twardoch’s novel can be interpreted as a parody of the point of view technique.

    There has been a great deal of discussion in the recent philosophical literature of the relationship between the minimalist theory of truth and the expressivist metaethical theory. One group of philosophers contends that minimalism and expressivism are compatible, the other group contends that such theories are incompatible. Following Simon Blackburn (manuscript), I will call the former position ‘compatibilism’ and the latter position‘incompatiblism.’ Even those compatibilist philosophers who hold that there is no conflict or tension between these two theories-minimalism and expressivism-typically think that some revision of minimalism is required to accommodate expressivism. The claim that there is such an incompatibility, I will argue, is based on a misunderstanding of the historical roots of expressivism, the motivations behind the expressivist theory, and the essential commitments of expressivism. I will present an account of the expressivist theory that is clearly consistent with minimalism.

    In the 1780s, a multilingual dictionary was published in Saint Petersburg in the Russian Empire, under the editorship of the German Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811). As its title— Сравнительные Словари Всѣхъ Языковъ и Нарѣчiй [Comparative Vocabularies of all Languages and Dialects]—explains, it aimed to be a comparative dictionary of almost 300 headwords and numbers in Russian and their equivalents in 200 languages and dialects from all over Europe and Asia. Amongst these are five of the six Celtic languages—Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and Breton, as well as an unknown “Celtic”—and this paper gives a brief overview of the background to the dictionary, and then focuses on the first 10 lexemes in each of the Celtic languages as they are presented in the dictionary itself, pointing out various inaccuracies, but also the historical value therein.
    Pod koniec XVIII wieku w Petersburgu opublikowano wielojęzyczny słownik, którego redaktorem był niemiecki uczony – Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811). Zgodnie z tytułem – Сравнительные Словари Всѣхъ Языковъ и Нарѣчiй (Słownik porównawczy wszystkich języków i dialektów) – miał to być wielojęzyczny słownik zawierający 300 haseł i liczby z języka rosyjskiego oraz ich odpowiedniki w 200 językach i dialektach z terenów Europy i Azji. Pośród nich jest sześć języków celtyckich – irlandzki, szkocki, walijski, kornwalijski (kornicki), bretoński, oraz nieznany „celtycki”. Artykuł skrótowo przedstawia historię powstania słownika oraz skupia się na analizie 10 wybranych leksemów z każdego z wymienionych języków celtyckich wskazując na różne nieścisłości, jak również podkreślając wartość historyczną haseł zawartych w słowniku.

    This essay aims at exploring Zionist currents that resisted the establishment of a Jewish nation-state, their non-statist vision of Zionism and its roots in Jewish conditions and political traditions, as well as in European anti-statist ideologies and national patterns. First, the non-Zionist diaspora nationalism of Simon Dubnow will be examined, as an important point of reference of non-statist Zionisms; then, the reservations of Ahad Ha’am, founder of “spiritual Zionism”, from the vision of a nation-state and the Marxian anti-statism of Ber Borochov and his socialist followers will be observed. Thereafter, the anarchism of Martin Buber and his followers in the binational factions “Brit Shalom and Ihud” will be discussed; here anti-statism is manifestly theological. Lastly, the current manifestations of non-statist Jewish nationalism will be succinctly explored, focusing on two religious-Zionist rabbis, the late Menachem Fruman and Shimon Gershon Rosenberg, and the American historian David N. Myers.

    Recent studies on the role of the eyewitnesses in the formation of the Gospel tradition argue for the singular importance of the original followers of Jesus. Luke himself might reflect their unique standing with his stated reliance on “the eyewitnesses and the servants of the word” (1,2). Still, Luke’s expansion of the Markan call of Peter seems, to many modern scholars at least, precisely that – a literary reworking of the original Markan story. Luke thus appears to resort to literary fiction to confirm the authority of those who guarantee the non-fictional character of his narrative. The conflicting nature of this operation needs to be reexamined. As this article argues, the recent studies on the Lake of Galilee, Simon Peter, and the role of the eyewitnesses offer enough evidence to suggest that in composing the story of the call of Peter, Luke relied on a source that depicted the call in connection with the fishing miracle. Secondly, existence of such a tradition opens new possibilities for reconstructing the past so differently narrativized by Luke and Mark.

    In British theatre of the last three decades, we observe a significant shift from the more verbal, playwright-focused model of theatre whose meanings are determined primarily by the literary concept of drama to the one which exercises more profoundly artistic autonomy of theatre. Complicite is one of the leading theatre companies that are responsible for this shift. In the performances of Complicite, the theme of violence has been explored frequently. The whole variety of theatre devices were employed in depicting images of violence. The article discusses plays such as Mnemonic, The Street of Crocodiles, Measure for Measure and The Master and Margarita, A Disappearing Number, Shun-kin and The Encounter and mentions others.
    W ciągu ostatnich trzech dekad można zaobserwować w brytyjskim teatrze odejście od modelu teatru opartego na słowie, którego znaczenia determinowane są przez literacką koncepcję dramatu na rzecz teatru, który korzysta w większym zakresie z autonomii artystycznej teatru. Complicite to jedna z tych grup teatralnych, które stoją za tymi zmianami. W przedstawienich Complicite, temat przemocy pojawia się regularnie i do jej zaprezentowania wykorzystywany jest cały wachlarz środków artystycznych. Artykuł omawia sztuki: Mnemonic, The Street of Crocodiles, Measure for Measure, The Master and Margarita, A Disappearing Number, Shun-kin, The Encounter i kilka innych.

    Fr. Duraiswami Simon Amalorpavadass (1932-1990) was one of the most important Indian theologians of the twentieth century. He became involved in the renewal of the Catholic Church in India in accordance with the vision and spirit of Vatican II. In 1967, he founded the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC) in Bangalore, and then headed it until 1980. The way he shaped them showed his spiritual imagination, commitment and tireless dedication. In the years 1967-1982 he was the editor of the magazine “Word and Worship”, published by NBCLC. In 1981, at the initiative of Fr. Amalorpavadass at the State University of Mysuru the Department of Christianity was established. He developed an authentic Indian and Christian spirituality, liturgy and theology of evangelization and inculturation. In catechesis he advocated a newly developed anthropological method. In turn, interreligious dialogue, in which he presented the inclusivist position, gained with his help an Indian figure: all religions have a special role in the history of salvation, but this does not diminish the special contribution of the salvific mission of Jesus Christ.
    Ks. Duraiswami Simon Amalorpavadass (1932-1990) był jednym z najważniejszych indyjskich teologów ostatniego stulecia. Zaangażował się w odnowę Kościoła katolickiego w Indiach zgodnie z wizją i duchem Vaticanum II. W 1967 roku założył Narodowe Centrum Biblijne, Katechetyczne i Liturgiczne (NBCLC) w Bangalore, a następnie kierował nim do 1980 roku. Sposób, w jaki je kształtował (bez korzystania z jakiegokolwiek wzoru), pokazał jego duchową wyobraźnię, zaangażowanie oraz niestrudzone poświęcenie. W latach 1967-1982 był redaktorem czasopisma “Word and Worship”, wydawanego przez NBCLC. W 1981 roku z inicjatywy ks. Amalorpavadassa na Uniwersytecie Stanowym w Mysuru utworzono Wydział Chrześcijaństwa. Omawiany autor należał do licznych organizacji międzynarodowych, był na przykład członkiem Międzynarodowego Stowarzyszenia Studiów Misyjnych (IAMS). Ks. Amalorpavadass rozwijał autentyczną indyjską i chrześcijańską duchowość, liturgię oraz teologię ewangelizacji i inkulturacji. W katechezie opowiadał się za nowo opracowaną metodą antropologiczną. Z kolei dialog międzyreligijny, w którym prezentował stanowisko inkluzywistyczne, zyskał z jego pomocą indyjską postać: wszystkie religie pełnią szczególną rolę w historii zbawienia, jednakże nie umniejsza to szczególnego wkładu zbawczej misji Jezusa Chrystusa.

    The paper presents conditions of the situation of Polish nationals in the British social security system since Polish accession to the European Union. It presents an analysis of statistical data showing the structure of immigrants to Britain after the borders were opened to workers from the “new” EU Member States. The development also includes a representation of the conditions that are imposed on immigrants in order for them to receive such benefits as British State Pension and Child Benefifi ts. The article is based on a lecture by Prof. Simon Roberts delivered at an international conference entitled “Re-emigration of Polish citizens – legal and social issues”, which took place on 5 September 2014, at the Andrzej Bączkowski Centre for Social Dialogue.
    W tekście zaprezentowano uwarunkowania sytuacji obywateli polskich w brytyjskim systemie zabezpieczenia społecznego od momentu przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Zawarto w nim analizę danych statystycznych, przedstawiających strukturę imigrantów przybywających do Wielkiej Brytanii po otwarciu granic. Przedstawia się w nim warunki, jakie stawiane są imigrantom w celu otrzymania świadczeń British State Pension oraz Child Benefits. Artykuł powstał na podstawie referatu prof. Simona Robertsa, wygłoszonego podczas międzynarodowej konferencję pt. „Reemigracja obywateli polskich – problemy prawne i społeczne”, która odbyła się w dniu 5 września 2014 r. w Centrum Dialogu Społecznego „Dialog” im. Andrzeja Bączkowskiego w Warszawie.

    We examine how John Paul II’s lifelong work on the issues surrounding family and human life as expressed in Pope Paul VI’s Humanae Vitae (1968) are an exemplification of his principles for cultural renewal as stated in Redemptor Hominis (1979). The triad of principles, the primacy of persons over things, the priority of ethics over technology, and the superiority of spirit over matter provide a set of interlocking principles for discerning the true progress of modern culture. Contrary to the dominant view that artificial contraception represents an opportunity for great progress for women and for society, we argue that the ambivalent character of modern technology as established by Yves René Simon and Clive Staples Lewis points to a large downside of artificial contraception, namely, a real opportunity for the degradation of the marriage bond and the full flourishing of the human person. The substitution of technology as a way to regulate birth for personal choice and habit or virtue inverts the principle of ethics over technology and opens the door for the manipulation of women as predicted by Pope Paul VI which is a clear failure to place the primacy of the person over things. The fundamental error lies in the materialistic philosophy of life which refuses to acknowledge the superiority of spirit over matter. The battle over the issues at the heart of Humane Vitae constitutes a battle over the ultimate meaning of human existence as theistic or anti-theistic, Gospel or anti-Gospel, and thus it will always stand as a “sign of contradiction.”

    The paper starts with describing the problem of “naive” or “freshman” relativism that is typically encountered by ethics teachers in introductory ethics classes. I then go on to show that this well-known problem, described and thoroughly analysed by several authors, might have obscured the emergence of a new and different problem – opting out – and that this has become particularly obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on authors such as Albert O. Hirschman, Wendy Brown and especially Bonnie Honig, I go on to argue that this new phenomenon is best thought of as a symptom of neoliberal rationality “colonizing” the domain of morality. I further suggest that we should view morality as what Bonnie Honig defines as a public thing, and I briefly consider some implications of this proposal. Finally, I suggest some possible ways of dealing with the problem of opting out of morality.
    Atykuł rozpoczyna się od opisania problemu relatywizmu naiwnego, charakterystycznego dla studentów pierwszego roku, z którym zwykle spotykają się nauczyciele etyki na zajęciach wprowadzających. Pokazuję, że ten dobrze znany, opisany i dokładnie przeanalizowany problem mógł przesłonić pojawienie się innego problemu – wycofania – oraz że stało się to szczególnie widoczne podczas pandemii COVID-19. Nawiązując do takich autorów, jak Albert O. Hirschman, Wendy Brown, a zwłaszcza Bonnie Honig, przekonuję, że to nowe zjawisko najlepiej traktować jako symptom neoliberalnej racjonalności „kolonizującej” domenę moralności. Dalej sugeruję, że powinniśmy postrzegać moralność jako to, co Bonnie Honig nazywa rzeczą publiczną, i pokrótce rozważam pewne implikacje tej propozycji. Na koniec proponuję kilka możliwych sposobów radzenia sobie z problemem wycofania z moralności.
