Opis:
The first tetrapodomorph specimen from the Palaeozoic sequences of the Moravian Karst (Moravo-Silesian Basin, Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic) is described. The well preserved, cosmine-covered lateral extrascapular bone comes from the Upper Devonian (Famennian) hemipelagic Křtiny Limestone of the Líšeň Formation. The affinity to the “osteolepiforms” is inferred from the cosmine histology and morphological features of the bone. Assignment to the Megalichthyiformes seems most probable. The associated fauna, e.g., clymenids, orthocone nautiloids, thin shelled bivalves, trilobites and crinoids, clearly demonstrate a marine environment.

Opis:
The Petřkovice Member is the basal unit of the paralic succession of the Ostrava Formation of the Upper Silesian Basin. This member is a valuable source of information about the transition from a marine basin filled with siliciclastic sediments into a paralic basin with the beginning of coal-bearing sedimentation. Models of: (1) the number of coal seams, (2) their total thickness, and (3) the coal content with respect to the total thickness of the succession were created to describe and assess the coal-bearing capacity of the Petřkovice Member. The authors present models for coal seam thicknesses exceeding either 10 or 40 cm. The coal-bearing capacity of the Petřkovice Member is very low. The average share of coal seams thicker than 0.1 m is 3%. The share of coal seams with a thickness that exceeds 0.4 m is only 1.66%. Moreover, in large areas of the basin, in the N and NE parts, the coal-bearing capacity is close to zero, because coal seams of greater thickness were detected only locally there. Based on these models and on other geological data, it is obvious that the onset of coal sedimentation was gradual and limited to particular sites showing the greatest subsidence of the basin floor. In places where minor subsidence took place, there were likely unfavorable conditions for accumulation of organic matter.

Opis:
The paper presents the changes of coal seams quality near fault zones. Three types of relations have been found. The first one shows an increase of coal quality at the 0.2 m distance from fault surface, as a result of increase of coalification degree. It is assumed that, this type was caused by heat of friction which was rising during faulting. It is revealed as an increase of such parameters as: caking properties, vitrinite reflectance, calorific value and carbon content, as well as the decrease of oxygen, ash, and moisture content. The second type presents differed degree of coal quality decrease. This type was produced due to hypergenic processes. The author found four subtypes of oxidation-type changes of coal quality parameters in fault zones. The first one shows the highest level of hypergenic processes in a coal seam about 1 m off a fault plane. The second presents minor degree of oxidation processes in the coal seam at a smaller distance from the fault. The third one demonstrates minimum oxidation changes of coal quality at a distance of 0.2 m from the fault. The fourth subtype of the oxidation changes of coal quality has been observed only in tectonic breccia and not in the coal seams itself. The third types demonstrates faults which do not show any impact on changes of coal quality parameters. To this type belong faults from SW part of USCB and faults with downthrown up to 20 m.

stress state
Opis:
The main objective of this study is to present calculation methods of horizontal stress profiles, taking into account the stress boundaries model, poro-elastic horizontal strain model and the effective stress ratio approach, using calibration with wellbore failure. The mechanical earth model (MEM) parameters from log measurements and well testing data were estimated for a well located in the southeastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Log-derived horizontal stresses of the well are commonly treated as the final product of geomechanical modeling in oil and gas practices. A less popular method for estimating horizontal stresses is based on Kirsch equations juxtaposed with compressional and tensile failure observed on a micro-imager or six-arm caliper. Using this approach, horizontal stresses are determined based on the fact that when hoop stresses exceed the formation’s tensile strength, tensile fractures are created, and when those stresses exceed the compressive strength of the formation, breakouts can be identified. The advantage of this method is that it can be run without in situ stress measurements. The presented workflow is recommended every time there is an image log and dipole sonic measurement in the available dataset, both being necessary to observe the failure zones and MEM.

Opis:
Due to the deposits of quality hard coal, the area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) has been one of the most industrialised regions in Europe for centuries. One of the most significant issues in terms of environmental impact and risks related to mining activities are the discharged mine waters. Mine water is pumped to the surface in great amount from mine workings of active underground mines both in Czech and Polish part of the USCB. In the past, the mine waters used to be discharged to nearby watercourses without systematic control of their amount and quality. It resulted in uncontrolled impacts on quality of the main rivers in the USCB. This is why a technically and economically demanding solution was adopted: discharging of mine (but also waste) waters through an artificial channel – so-called “Olza Collector” – directly to the Oder River, i.e. away of the Olza River and its minor tributaries. Automated control and dosing of waters to the Oder River depending on quality of the discharged waters and quality and quantity of the Oder surface water ensures maintaining of the total content of chlorides and sulphates in Oder below 500 mg/dm3 with the efficiency of more than 90% of days in a year.

Opis:
In recent years, the usage of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry technique became more and more popular and it is used in many scientific field: for creating digital elevation models (DEMs), monitoring of deformation, glacier and ice motion etc. The paper presents preliminary analysis of satellite interferometry data from south-west part of Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). USCB is characterised by a complicated geological structure, which is affected by the over 200-year hard coal mining. USCB is one of the world's biggest mining centres. The negative aspect of such a magnitude of exploitation is visible on the surface in the form of surface deformation, subsidence and induced seismicity and it necessitate monitoring the USCB area. With the use of an established geodetic network in the first case, and by means of a seismic network in the second case. The availability of satellite data resulted in the development of novel methods, which can significantly affect the monitoring quality of an endangered area. Authors used pair of satellite images for interferometric processing, made in March and April 2008. In the first stage of processing, the whole SAR scene was processed (100km x 100km). External DEMs were used both to increase precision in co registration of selected pair of SAR images and to reduce the errors in data processing and remove topographic phase during interferogram formation. Analysis of coherence demonstrated high value, which is connected with short time period and short perpendicular baseline of selected images, as well as highly urbanized area. The interpretation of interferometric data shows distinctive concentric fringe features. The centre of the fringe is an area of maximum of surface downwarp caused by coal mining. In the area of Knurów two subsidence troughs were located. Both of them consist of two interferometric fringes, correspond with 5 cmsubsidence per 35 days.
Do przetwarzania wykorzystano parę zdjęć wykonanych w marcu i kwietniu 2008 roku.

Opis:
The coarse-grained aquifer of lower Badenian forms the most important hydrostructure in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). In order to determine the sources of its groundwater mineralization the hydrochemical relationships between ion concentrations and other specific parameters were examined. Most of the water was probably derived from the seawater, evaporated to a various extent, but not reaching halite crystallization point.Water with higher TDS may represent mixture between evaporated seawater and the residual brine (after halite crystallization). In less mineralized waters of HCO3-Na type, elevated concentrations of Br and I could be attributed to the decay of organic matter. For the most samples of waters representing Cl-Na type, the differentiation in Br and I concentrations was controlled independently.

This article presents the results of tests on the energy properties of sedimentary rocks in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The rocks were tested both in an air-dry state and in a water saturation state. Samples of sedimentary rocks were collected from boreholes drilled in the underground workings of coal mines located within the area of the city of Jastrzębie, in the areas of the Chwałowice Trough and Rybnik Trough (south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin) and in the Main Trough. Influence of saturation condition on the values of the tested energy parameters was observed. The values of elastic energy and dissipated energy obtained for the samples tested in water saturation were lower compared to the values obtained for samples tested in air-dry state. As observed, an increase in the values of the given types of specific energy corresponds to an increase in the uniaxial compression strength in air-dry state and in water saturation state. Results of the tests are original and they can be applied while analysing the possibility of the occurrence of some dynamic phenomena and hazards in mine workings in Carboniferous rock mass in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, caused by mining operations.

The object of examination were representative coal seams from the BD 57 drillhole. It was found increase of coal rank is expressed by a reduction of moisture content and volatile matter and the increase reflectance with depth. In petrographic composition vitrinite group macerals (Vtmmf= 65.8-91.0%) dominate over the inertinite group (Immf = 6.2-28.4). Participatiof liptinite maceral group is low (Lmmf = 1.9-5.8%). Inertinite macerals group participation does not increase with coal rank, unlike in the Zofiówka monocline.

Opis:
This study reports on a new set of sedimentological data and related interpretations of the Santonian–Campanian siliciclastic deposits in the Western Flysch Carpathians based on natural outcrops in the uppermost Godula Formation and lowermost Istebna Formation. The rationale was to confront the characteristics of this flysch succession with current controversies and state of knowledge on deep-water clastic sedimentation. The sedimentological analysis of the field data allowed for multi-scale synthetic classifications of the depositional components in the investigated flysch. The hierarchical and practical nature of the suggested classification schemes allows for their application to similar deposits in other regions. The siliciclastic deposits are products of gravity-driven terrigenous sediment redeposition via submarine slumps, debris flows, and turbidity currents. Sediment reworking by tractional bottom currents is considered as an accompanying factor. Point-sourced turbiditic fan lobe fringes from the submarine piedmont ramp and linearly supplied debritic covers along the slope apron are proposed as dominant. The innovative linking between the textural-structural descriptive features of the deposits and the critical determinants of specific sediment gravity-flow processes and architectural elements of the deepwater clastic depositional systems is a significant contribution to this research field.

Opis:
The paper presents general information on variability of coalbed methane bearing capacity in tectonic zones, faults, rock fissures etc. Methane occurrences were compared in two tectonic zones of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin - the zone of fault-block tectonics and the folded one. The influence of big size faults (i.e. Bzie-Czechowice fault) and neighbouring fissures on methane bearing capacity is strongly marked in the zone of fault-block tectonics. The most important tectonic factors influencing the methane occurrence in the folded zone are Chwałowice and Jejkowice depressions and also Orlová and Michalkovice overthrusts. The methane bearing zones are parallel to Chwałowice and Jejkowice depressions bottom axis. Presence of Carpathian nappes intensifies rock fissuring process, which could involve the methane migration and cause degasification of coal seams lying under these nappes.

Cracow Sandstone Series
Upper Silesian Coal Basin
Opis:
The Cracow Sandstone Series (CSS), consisting mainly of coarse-grained clastic rocks (>75%), form upper lithostratigraphic series of the coal-bearing Carboniferous formations in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). CSS covers the area of 1,500 km2. Thicknes of a formation varies from tens to 1,140 m. Exploitation of coal deposits on industrial scale of production has started since the turn of the XVIII and XIX century. Intensity of water inflows to individual mines ranging from 4.3 to 52.8 m3/min, depends on morphological, geogenic and mining factors. Within the CSS hydrogeological complex typical for sedimentary basins hydrodynamic and hydrogeochemical vertical zoning occurs. Hydrochemical as well as isotope research revealed appearance of varied zones of infiltration, mixed waters and relict brines. Prevailing significance in hydrodynamic conditions forming within the CSS have hydrodynamic barriers: overlying isolating Miocene aquitard and increasing with depth diagenesis of the Carboniferous formation. The mining activity increases the rock permeability and causes the disturbance of the natural hydrodynamic field and hydrogeochemical conditions of the CSS.

Opis:
Assemblages composed of 11 ammonium min er als, mainly sulphates and chlorides, were recorded from four burning coal-dumps (BCD) in the Upper Silesian Coal Ba sin. Most of them are newly recorded from Poland. Minerals were identified using PXRD and SEM with EDS analyses. Salammoniac, NH4Cl, and tschermigite, (NH4)Al(SO4)2ź12H2O are the most common species on the BCD studied. Kremersite, (NH4,K)2[FeCl5(H2O)], is rare and coexists with members of the ammonioalunite–ammoniojarosite series. Boussingaultite, (NH4)2Mg(SO4)2ź6H2O, and more rarely clairite, (NH4)2Fe3(SO4)4(OH)3ź3H2O, and mascagnite, (NH4)2SO4, ac company numerous Mg, Al, Fe and Ca sulphate minerals. These usually occuras very fine admixtures forming coatings, small nodules or porous masses and were found on the BCD surface close to gas vents. Also a massive sulphate crust was found in the deeper part of the BCD nearby the fire zone. This crust is composed mainly of an hydrous sulphates: godovikovite, (NH4)(Al,Fe)(SO4)2 , and very minor sabieite, (NH4)Fe(SO4)2, and efremovite, (NH4)2Mg2(SO4)3, which were transformed into different hydrated sulphates in the outer zone of the crust. The fibrous or dendritic habit of many ammonium minerals, and the vesicular texture of some sulphate aggregates, point to their crystallization from the gas phase. Some ammonia miner ls may also have developed through hydration of prevlously formed phases or precipitated from locally formed aqueous solutions due to cooling or evaporation. The appear ance of ammonia minerals on BCD can be a useful indicator of the presence of underground fires.
