Neurocysticercosis is the common parasitic disease of the central nervous system. One of the uncommon manifestations and a rare complication is its disseminated form. Human cysticercosis is caused by the spreading of the embryo of Taenia solium in the intestine via the hepatoportal system to different tissues and internal organs of the body. The organs most commonly affected are the subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscles, lungs, brain, eyes, liver, and occasionally the heart, thyroid, and pancreas. We report a case of a 62 year old male, who has been presented, with seizures and subcutaneous nodules on both extremities. After investigation he was diagnosed as a case of disseminated cysticercosis involving brain, subcutaneous tissue, liver, muscles and pericardial fat.

Epilepsy is one of the most common mental disorders in the world, affecting 65 million people. The prevalence in Arab countries of Epilepsy is estimated at 174 per 100,000 individuals, and in Saudi Arabia is 6.54 per 1,000 individuals. Epilepsy seizures have different types, and each patient needs to have a treatment plan according to the seizure type. Hence, accurate classification of seizure type is an essential part of diagnosing and treating epileptic patients. In this paper, features based on fast Fourier transform from EEG montages are used to classify different types of seizures. Since the distribution of classes is not uniform and the dataset suffers from severe imbalance. Various algorithms are used to under-sample the majority class and over-sample the minority classes. Random forest classifier produced classification accuracy of 96% to differentiate three types of seizures from the healthy EEG reading.

Opis:
Introduction. Basal ganglia calcification (BGC) in pediatric population is rare and is considered as a pathological finding. Various causes may be responsible for BGC including hypoparathyroidism, various infectious, toxicities or hereditary disorders. Aim. We aimed to present a 8 year old boy presented with generalized seizure and bilateral small amount of globus pallidum calcifications on neuroimaging studies leading to the diagnosis of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, which is a treatable cause of seizure. Description of the case. A 8-year-old boy presented to our emergency department with generalized seizure for the first time in his life. There was no history of previous head trauma and his family history was unremarkable. Neurological examination revealed no pathological findings. Radiological imaging studies revealed only bilateral small amount of globus pallidus calcifications. He was referred to the pediatric endocrinology department for further evaluation of the hypocalcemic convulsion, where laboratory investigations revealed idiopathic hypoparathyroidism as the cause of hypocalcemic convulsion with exclusion of the other causes. Conclusion. Even a small amount of BGC in pediatric patients may be the sign of primary hypoparathyroidism and should be evaluated with serum electrolyte levels for early diagnosis and for the prevention of multisystemic complications of hypoparathyroidism.

A series of substituted amides of isocyclic and heterocyclic acids have been synthesized. All obtained compounds were evaluated qualitatively for their anticonvulsant activity in the maximal electroshock seizure test (MES test) and psychomotor seizure test (6 Hz test) in mice after intraperitoneal administration. The neurological toxicity was determined in the rotorod neurotoxicity test (Tox test). Two of these compounds appeared most promising: 3-oxo-1-cyklopentanecarboxylic acid 2-fluorobenzylamide (5), 1-cyclopentenecarboxylic acid 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzylamide (8) and were tested quantitatively in MES test in mice after oral administration (o.p.) and in 6 Hz test in mice after intraperitoneal administration(i.p.). Compound (5) showed MES ED50 =82.65 mg/kg and compound (8) showed 6 Hz ED50=84.13 mg/kg.

Opis:
In this work was investigated the effect of pre-treatment with (PhSe)2 and (PhTe)2 on chemical seizure and 4-aminopyridine-induced lethality in mice. Additionally, lipid peroxidation levels of whole brain after treatment with 4-aminopyridine and effect of pre-treatment with (PhSe)2 and (PhTe)2 on these levels were investigated. Mice were pre-treated with (PhSe)2 or (PhTe)2 (50, 100, or 150 µmol/kg) 30 min before 4-aminopyridine (12 mg/kg) administration. The treatment with 4-aminopyridine caused a significant incidence of seizures (clonic, tonic) and death. Pre-treatment with (PhSe)2 and (PhTe)2 significantly increased the latency for clonic and tonic seizures, and prevented 4-aminopyridine-induced death. Significantly, the pre-treatment with (PhSe)2 or (PhTe)2 increased the latency for clonic seizures in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, a significant increase was observed in the brain lipid peroxidation level after treatment with 4-aminopyridine, which was significantly inhibited by pre-treatment with 150 µmol/kg (PhSe)2 or (PhTe)2. These results demonstrate that (PhSe)2 and (PhTe)2 counteract the harmful effects of 4-aminopyridine. It is possible that this effect results from modulation of the redox state of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors and/or of Ca2+ channel activity with subsequent alteration in neurotransmitter release. Importantly, this study provides evidence for anticonvulsant and antioxidant properties of (PhSe)2 and (PhTe)2, which indicates a neuroprotective activity of these compounds.

A new over-dispersed discrete probability model is introduced, by compounding the Poisson distribution with the weighted Ishita distribution. The statistical properties of the newly introduced distribution have been derived and discussed. Parameter estimation has been done with the application of the maximum likelihood method of estimation, followed by the Monte Carlo simulation procedure to examine the suitability of the ML estimators. In order to verify the applicability of the proposed distribution, a real-life set of data from the medical field has been analysed for modeling a count dataset representing epileptic seizure counts.

Introduction and aim. Paroxysmal non-epileptic events (PNEEs) are neurological conditions that include behavioral changes or disturbances of consciousness. The aim of the article is to compare individual paroxysmal non-epileptic events disorders, to indicate differences in their clinical picture and to discuss their differential diagnosis. Material and methods. A review of the most common non-epileptic paroxysmal events is presented based on the available literature of PubMed and Google Scholar databases from 2000 to 2023. Analysis of the literature. Depending on the age of the child, the nature and type of seizures are variable. Unfortunately, epilepsy is currently overdiagnosed, which results in the inclusion of antiepileptic drugs without the need to use them. This may be related to the immaturity of the central nervous system, malfunctioning of other organs or have a psychogenic background. In most cases, they do not require pharmacological treatment. Conclusion. Paroxysmal non-epileptic events, due to the diverse and uncharacteristic clinical picture, pose a major diagnostic challenge. Because of the current overdiagnosis of epilepsy they should always bear in mind differential diagnosis. This is important because of the differences in the treatment of these disorders.

Terrorist acts have been a worrisome phenomenon for all nations. Paradoxically, although states have been conscious about the danger of this phenomenon, there is no definition of terrorist acts so far. States have been skeptical and they have not agreed that the judgment of these criminal offences be performed by international jurisdictions, thus opting for the domestic jurisdiction. Nevertheless, states have lacked the willingness to establish joint criminal policies and find efficacious means to combat these terrorist acts. One of these efficacious means has been the seizure and confiscation of licit and illicit assets possessed by terrorist groups. This is the focus of this short study, which will be inclusive by viewing this topic under the general framework of international acts, our domestic legislation, as well as the American one. This paper aims at presenting the legislative measures taken by the Albanian state to meet international requirements. It endeavors to provide arguments why all licit and illicit assets associated with terrorist acts are seized and confiscated. Special attention is paid to the way these assets are administered. Moreover, this study tries to analyze the achievements and problems in Albania, as well as provide conclusions and recommendations.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the anticonvulsant effects of levetiracetam in combination with ethosuximide in the mouse 6 Hz psychomotor seizure model. Limbic (psychomotor) seizure activity was evoked in albino Swiss mice by a current (32 mA, 6 Hz, 3 s stimulus duration) delivered via ocular electrodes; type II isobolographic analysis was used to characterize the consequent anticonvulsant interactions between the drug combinations for fixed-ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 and 1:10. With type II isobolographic analysis, the combinations of levetiracetam with ethosuximide for the fixed-ratios of 1:5 and 1:10 were supra-additive (synergistic; P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively) in terms of seizure suppression, while the combinations for the fixed-ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 were additive in the mouse 6 Hz psychomotor seizure model. The combinations of levetiracetam with ethosuximide for the fixed-ratios of 1:5 and 1:10 appear to be particularly favorable combinations exerting supra-additive interaction in the mouse 6 Hz psychomotor seizure model. Finally, it may be concluded that because of the synergistic interactions between levetiracetam and ethosuximide, the combination might be useful in clinical practice.

Introduction. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a group of clinical disorders typically manifested by the presence of seizures, headache, impaired consciousness, nausea and focal neurological deficits. It is stated that PRES is a result of high blood pressure which leads to impaired self-regulation and hyperperfusion causing endothelial damage and vasogenic oedema or that excessive arteriolar vasoconstriction causes reduced blood flow, thus causing ischemia and cytotoxic oedema. Case Report. A 21-year-old woman was admitted to obstetrics & gynaecology department with symptoms of eclampsia. CT of the head revelaed a holohemispheric watershed pattern. MRI confirmed the presence of vasogenicoedema in the affected regions, typical for PRES. C-section was performed. Ten days after administering treatment, MRI showed complete withdrawal of the lesions. The diagnosis of PRES was based on clinical symptoms and MRI, with typical cortical and subcortical oedema without infarction.
