Opis:
In the paper the optimal design of forecasting contracts in principal-agent setting is investigated. It is assumed that the principal pays the agent (the forecaster) based on an announced forecast and an event that materializes next. Such a contract is called incentive compatible if the agent maximizes her payoff when she announces her true beliefs. This paper relaxes the assumption present in earlier works on this subject that agent’s beliefs are deterministic by allowing them to be random (i.e. stemming from estimation). It is shown that for binary or nominal events the principal can learn only expected values of agent’s predictions in an incentive compatible way independent of agent’s signal space. Additionally it is proven that incentive compatible payment schemes give the agent a strictly positive incentive to improve the precision of her estimates.

Opis:
Granting a credit product has always been at the heart of banking. Simultaneously, banks are obligated to assess the borrower’s credit risk. Apart from creditworthiness, to grant a credit product, banks are using credit scoring more and more often. Scoring models, which are an essential part of credit scoring, are being developed in order to select those clients who will repay their debt. For lenders, high effectiveness of selection based on the scoring model is the primary attribute, so it is crucial to gauge its statistical quality. Several textbooks regarding assessing statistical quality of scoring models are available, there is however no full consistency between names and definitions of particular measures. In this article, the most common statistical measures for assessing quality of scoring models, such as the pseudo Gini index, Kolmogorov‑Smirnov statistic, and concentration curve are reviewed and their statistical characteristics are discussed. Furthermore, the author proposes the application of the well‑known distribution similarity index as a measure of discriminatory power of scoring models. The author also attempts to standardise names and formulas for particular measures in order to finally contrast them in a comparative analysis of credit scoring models.

The aim of the study was to elaborate a new scoring system of chosen elements in performance test of Polish Konik horse. In the analysis, 42 horses were included. Test scores of two approaches were statistically elaborated: of the system in force and obtained on the basis of new intervals divided according to their mean values and SD. Multifactorial analysis of variance and T-Tukey test were performed. Low variation of individual performance test scores suggests a necessity for modification of the score system in force. The necessity also results from the change of score level in effect of using the new scoring system. The method of estimating the following traits is particularly controversial: behaviour, step length in walk, return of breath frequency to standard and effort test which belong to elements usually maximally scored. In consequence, they do not function as selection criteria.

Opis:
The problem considered in this article involves the construction of evaluation model, which could subsequently be used in the field of modeling and risk management. The research work is finalized by a construction of a new model on the basis of observations of the models used for risk management and knowledge of information theory, machine learning and artificial neural networks. The developed tools are trained online, using their ability for automatic deduction rules based on data, during model application for evaluation tasks. The model, consequently changes the data analysis stage, limits the scope of the necessary expertise in the area, where the assessment model can be used and, to some extent, the shape of the model becomes independent from the current range of available data. These features increase its ability to generalize and to cope with the data of previously undefined classes, as well as improve its resistance to gaps occurring in the data. Performance of the model presented in this paper is tested and verified on the basis of real-life data, which would resemble a potentially real practical application. Preliminary tests performed within the scope of this work indicate that the developed model can form a starting point for further research as some of the used mechanisms have a fairly high efficiency and flexibility.

Opis:
Monitoring of surgical outcome is increasingly important part of governance of surgical activity. The aim of the study. POSSUM scoring system was applied prospectively to determine how it performed in predicting morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy in our hospital, a group known to be at high risk of complications and death. Material and methods. A total of 100 cases of emergency laparotomies were studied in patients admitted in general surgery department during the period of May 2008 to August 2010. The study group consisted of the following cases. Duodenal perforation (37 cases), intestinal obstruction (27 cases), gastric perforation (8 cases), ileal perforation (8 cases), appendicular perforation (7 cases), blunt trauma (4 cases) and others (9 cases). They were scored using POSSUM scoring system. Physiological scoring was done at the time of admission and operative scoring was done intraoperatively. They were followed up for the first 30 day post operative period for any complications and the outcome was noted. The observed morbidity and mortality rates were compared with the POSSUM predicted morbidity and mortality rates. Results. 15 patients died (mortality rate of 15%). The POSSUM predicted mortality was 20 deaths. O:E ratio of 0.71 was obtained. There was no statistically significant difference between the observed and predicted mortality rates (χ2=1.72, p=0.974). 71 patients experienced complications. The POSSUM predicted morbidity was 61 patients. O:E ratio of 1.19 was obtained. There was no statistically significant difference between the observed and predicted morbidity rates (χ2=1.594, p=0.991). Conclusions. POSSUM scoring is an accurate predictor of mortality and morbidity following emergency laparotomy and is a valid means of assessing adequacy of care provided to the patient. POSSUM can be used for surgical audit to assess and improve the quality of surgical care and helps in better outcome to the patient

Objective: The objective of the paper is to show the risk assessment of unsecured loans in theory and practise. Research Design & Methods: In the first part, the paper makes a literature review with regard to the theory unsecured loans and their risk assessment. In the second part, a case study discusses the risk assessment process as a practical application in the hypothetical case if a Swedish bank enters the German market. Findings: The risk assessment of unsecured loans is a standardized process there scoring models make a crucial contribution. This case study shows how difficult that process is in the event of cross-border activities, for example, a bank enters a new market in a new country. Implications & Recommendations: Assessing applicants on a new market is challenging due to the effect of asymmetric information. The problem can be solved by information sharing and by using the experiences from the existing portfolio. Based on that the bank can create an appropriate scorecard. Contribution & Value Added: The paper contributes to existing literature on risk assessment by applying scoring models to the case of cross-border activities. The task of identifying the most relevant features for a credit-scoring application is a challenging task. Reducing the number of redundant and unwanted features is an inevitable task for improving the performance of a credit-scoring model. The wrapper approach is usually used in credit-scoring applications to identify the most relevant features. However, this approach suffers from the issue of subset generation and the use of a single classifier as an evaluation function. The problem here is that each classifier may give different results that can be interpreted differently. Hence, we propose an ensemble wrapper featureselection model in this study that is based on a multi-classifier combination. In the first stage, we address the problem of subset generation by minimizing the search space through a customized heuristic. Then, a multi-classifier wrapper evaluation is applied using two-classifier-arrangement approaches in order to select a set of mutually approved sets of relevant features. The proposed method was evaluated on four credit datasets and has shown good performance as compared to individual classifier results.

Opis:
Banking is a financial institution that has a very important role in economic and trade activities which is useful for channeling funds in the form of loans to the public who need fresh funds for business in the hope of helping to improve the people's economy. In the loan process, banks are often exposed to risks known as credit risk or non-performing loans. Therefore, a credit analysis is performed by estimating the parameters using LU Decomposition in the Logistic Regression model. In this paper, the data used are data about cooperative financial services in Indonesia. Variables taken in the study are including the age of debtors (X1), family dependents (X2), the amount of savings (X3), the value of collateral (X4), the amount of income per month (X5), given the credit limit (X6), take home pay (X7), and the loan term (X8).

Accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) is still a problem and is not always easy, even for experienced surgeons. Studies have shown that 20 to 30% of the appendices removedwere normal. Therefore, various scoring systems have been developed to aid in the diagnosis of doubtful cases and reduce the number of unnecessary appendectomies. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of different scoring systems in acute appendicitis. Material and methods. The study involved 94 patients who underwent laparotomy due to suspected acute appendicitis. Medical examination at hospital admission was performed by a resident and a general surgery specialist. The probability of AA was evaluated using six different scoring systems: Alvarado, Fenyo, Eskelinen, Ohman, Tzankis, and RIPASA. The resident calculated the results in individual systems. The decision to perform the operation was taken by a specialist surgeon who did not know the results. Results. Normal appendix was removed in 26% of cases. Eskelinen, RIPASA and Alvarado systems showed highest sensitivity (99%, 88% and 85%, respectively). Tzankis and Fenyo systems showed highest specificity (62% and 50%, respectively). Conclusions. Our study has shown limited value of scoring systems for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The systems may improve diagnostic accuracy as they require obtaining a more detailed medical history, and making a more thorough and organized data analysis. However, the scoring systems should be treated only as an aid to diagnosis

Opis:
In previous research, the Extended Order Scale (EOS) dedicated to risk assessment was analysed. It was characterised by a Numerical Order Scale (NOS) evaluated by trapezoidal oriented fuzzy numbers (TrOFNs). However, the research showed that EOS with two-stage orientation phases, was too complicated. Therefore, the main aim of our paper is to simplify a Complete Order Scale (COS) to a zero- or one-stage order scale and a hybrid approach. For this purpose, a way to calculate the scoring function is presented. The results show that changes in the COS structure influence the values of a scoring function. Replacing just one linguistic indicator gives different results. Another finding of the research is the method’s flexibility that allows an expert to individually choose the most suitable COS. The research proves that the boundary between various linguistic labels cannot be precisely defined. However, knowledge of a formal COS structure allows it to be transformed into a less complex one.

Objectives This study aims to test the validity of the IPD-Work Consortium approach for creating comparable job strain groups between the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and the Demand-Control Questionnaire (DCQ). Material and Methods A random population sample (N = 682) of all middle-aged Malmö males and females was given a questionnaire with the 14-item JCQ and 11-item DCQ for the job control and job demands. The JCQ job control and job demands scores were calculated in 3 different ways: using the 14-item JCQ standard scale formulas (method 1); dropping 3 job control items and using the 11-item JCQ standard scale formulas with additional scale weights (method 2); and the approach of the IPD Group (method 3), dropping 3 job control items, but using the simple 11-item summation-based scale formulas. The high job strain was defined as a combination of high demands and low control. Results Between the 2 questionnaires, false negatives for the high job strain were much greater than false positives (37–49% vs. 7–13%). When the method 3 was applied, the sensitivity of the JCQ for the high job strain against the DCQ was lowest (0.51 vs. 0.60–0.63 when the methods 1 and 2 were applied), although the specificity was highest (0.93 vs. 0.87–0.89 when the methods 1 and 2 were applied). The prevalence of the high job strain with the JCQ (the method 3 was applied) was considerably lower (4–7%) than with the JCQ (the methods 1 and 2 were applied) and the DCQ. The number of congruent cases for the high job strain between the 2 questionnaires was smallest when the method 3 was applied. Conclusions The IPD-Work Consortium approach showed 2 major weaknesses to be used for epidemiological studies on the high job strain and health outcomes as compared to the standard JCQ methods: the greater misclassification of the high job strain and lower prevalence of the high job strain.

Opis:
Background: Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has brought a substantial change in medical practice. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STORBE) guidelines do not have a method to assign quality score to observational study publications which might lead to differences in assessing quality of publication. A scoring method can provide quantitative estimates that could improve quality of reporting, eventual conduct of observational studies and can lead to more transparent judgements about the quality of evidence. Objectives:To develop a quantitative scoring method for STROBE checklist and to design a rating scale in order to categorize epidemiological study publications into excellent, good, fair, poor quality based on the overall scores. Methods:STROBE-M (STROBE Modified) checklist was developed by dividing composite STROBE items into multiple items for ease of comprehension and scoring. For each item, we decided to have 3 quality scores option i.e. 0 (not fulfilled), 1 (fulfilled) and NA (not applicable). STROBE-M adherence scoring method was developed to assign quality scores to study publications. Results: Cross sectional studies had 40% good and 60% fair; case control studies had 7% good and 93% excellent; cohort studies had 100% study publications with excellent grade as per STROBE-M scoring. Cross sectional studies had overall fair STROBE-M adherence grade while case control studies and cohort studies had excellent grade. Conclusion: This study highlighted deficiencies in the reporting of observational studies. Based on our experience, the STROBE-M checklist seems to be a useful tool for assessing the reporting quality of the observational studies.
