Opis:
The area of research known as Cold Fusion (CF) has been the arena of a science-and-society feud since 1989, as described by Stephen Ritter in a recent issue of Chemical and Engineering News (1).The conflict is very unusual in terms of duration, the caliber of combatants, and the deviation from basic principles of scientific methodology of validation of claims. The purpose of this article is to comment on methodological mistakes made during the still- ongoing feud among scientists.
Obszar badań znany pod nazwą zimnej fuzji (z jęz. ang. cold fusion) jest przedmiotem sporu naukowo- społecznego od 1989 r. - jak opisał to Stephen Ritter w ostatnim wydaniu Chemical and Engineering News (1).

Opis:
In telecommunications and software engineering, testing is normally understood to be essentially active: a tester is said to stimulate, control, and enforce. Passive testing does not fit this paradigm and thus remains the niche research subject, which bears on the scope and depth of the obtained results. It is argued that such limited understanding of testing is one of its many community-bound preconceptions. It may be acceptable in the current engineering approach to testing, but can and should be challenged in order to converge on the core concepts of the proposed science of testing ("testology"). This methodological work aims at establishing that there are no fundamental reasons for admitting the dominant role of the active element in testing. To show this, external (also extratechnical) areas are consulted for insight, direct observations, and metaphors. The troublesome distinction between (passive) testing and monitoring, as well as unclear relations between testing and measurements, are also addressed.

Opis:
What is the microbe that we are dealing with? Whether it is cholera or anthrax, we want to know the disease-causing microorganism as quickly as possible since prompt identification of the causative organism would help control disease spread - and potentially save lives through provision of appropriate care and medication. Yet, despite the advent of rapid microbial identification tools – particularly those based on mass spectrometry – most undergraduate curricula continue to focus on culture- and nucleic acid-based identification techniques since they are widely used for detecting and identifying microbes in clinical and environmental samples. Mass spectrometry-based methods, however, have increasingly complemented traditional approaches in clinical and research laboratories - but are rarely featured in undergraduate curricula. Motivated by the desire to address the curriculum gap, the author of this study developed an inquiry-based laboratory exercise for introducing students to the operating principles and methodology of mass spectrometry-based microbial identification. By requiring students to identify microbes in environmental water samples – a real-life problem with unknown answers – the exercise piqued the students’ interest in learning, while helping to stir their curiosity through an interesting field activity in which they could put on a scientist’s hat in solving a mystery. This synopsis article summarizes a piece of published educational research and expands on the discussion of concepts underlying matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)-based microbial identification. Herein, the article discusses the relative advantages and disadvantages of the pattern recognition and proteome database search approaches for analyzing mass spectra data. Additionally, the effect of general and tailored sample preparation protocols on identification accuracy is also elaborated. Finally, the pedagogical utility of field- and inquiry-based educational tools is also discussed in greater detail from a post-publication perspective. A full-length synopsis of the work and a structured abstract can be found in the accompanying PDF file, the original article being entitled: “Teaching Microbial Identification with Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Bioinformatics Tools”.

Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The thesis presents an overview of the economic issues which existed in the European Middle Ages and modern times, prior to establishing classical economics. Materials and methods: The thesis was prepared based on the literature review which included scientific publications and websites devoted to the economy, as well as to social and cultural changes. During the Middle Ages, the mere survival was no longer satisfactory for humans; the times saw the accumulation of wealth, which turned out to be a prerequisite for participation in social life. Results: The initial intellectual narrative was dominated by canonists who studied the laws emerging from religious doctrines, gradually shifting their focus to philosophy, emphasizing the importance of research methods based on reason. Many universal ideas were introduced at the time. Conclusions: a) The focus on the method used as a research tool accelerated the emergence of particular areas of scientific studies; b) Christianity constituted the cultural core in the medieval period; c) Theology, in conjunction with philosophy, constituted the source allowing for the emergence of social sciences.

Methodological Bases of Research of Essence of a Category »Administrative Act«

Opis:
The purpose of the work is to establish the methodological foundations of the study of the essence of the category «administrative act». In the course of the research it was established that the methodological component is a set of research methods by which science achieves its fundamental goal - the acquisition and formation of new knowledge about the studied phenomena and processes. It is emphasized that the arsenal of scientific methods used in administrative law is extremely wide and includes both empirical methods - measure ment, observation, comparison - and purely theoretical. It was found that the administrative act, being the main form of activity of public authorities, is the basic, central concept of the science of administrative law; which is correlated with many other administrative and legal categories (administrative procedure, public-power relations, etc.). Based on the presence of polysemantic research links of the studied category with other administrative and legal institutions, the difficulty of choosing the appropriate methodological basis is emphasized, which requires a comprehensive approach to the choice of scientific tools of various theoretical constructions. Taking into account the established tradition in administrative and legal research, the expediency of using a three-level methodological model of scientific knowledge of the essence of the concept of administrative act, consisting of philosophical, general and special legal levels. It is concluded that the high heuristic potential of dialectical and systemic approaches is characterized by the possibility of considering the system of administrative law, which is an administrative act, on several levels: as a subsystem of society, as a component of modern law, as a separate system. It is emphasized that depending on the objectives of the study, their refinement and specification in the course of analytical work, the optics of the system approach can be changed, relatively speaking, by scaling the individual elements of the system as objects of study.

Security studies are formally functioning for less than five years but have a strong methodological basis, presented shortly in this paper. This include several well-known and broadly-recognized ways of providing the research process, including scientific methods used in social sciences. Author briefly analyses a set of them, showing their advantages and disadvantages and the way they should be used during the whole research process. The need for multidisciplinary studies, including the use of several research tool and techniques, is also stressed.

Opis:
The article contributes to a better understanding of the role of research in the policies of the states that are scientifically engaged in the High North. The research covers 17 European states: six are Arctic and 11 non-Arctic, which were selected according to the follow- ing (at least one) formulated criteria: having an established tradition of carrying out scientific research in the Arctic region; having issued Arctic policy documents and/or Arctic research strategies; participation in the activities of the Arctic Council; and having gained member- ship of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). In the analysis we have applied a mixed research method, since it incorporates elements of both qualitative and quantitative approaches and offers a more comprehensive review of the scrutinised texts. The qualitative analysis relies on a discourse analysis (predicate analysis). The quantitative part of the analysis utilizes the instruments of a software research tool — The AntConc. In the end, the outcomes of both methods are merged and compared. The study reveals that conducting scientific re- search is not a top priority for all Arctic states. However, it has the highest similarity in terms of applied approaches among Arctic states as compared to other fields (e.g. the economy, se- curity or pollution). At the same time, the environment and climate change are perceived to be the most important drivers behind Arctic research as defined in the Arctic states’ strategies. Moreover, there are major differences among both Arctic and non-Arctic states in terms of the level of accuracy in the presentation of their research activities, particularly with regard to the implementation of scientific programmes and research aims. Finally, the research indicates that all states highlight that international scientific cooperation stimulates cooperation also in other areas and that research provides information that supports decision making and policy creation
