Opis:
Theoretical background: Socially responsible investing (SRI) is a specific type of investment, combining both financial objectives and investor preferences regarding the environment, society, or corporate governance. Since the period following the 2007 global financial crisis, a significant increase in interest in assets that meet SRI policies has been observed, which translated into a shift in the mutual fund products offered. SRI investment funds play a significant role in the SRI market due to the size of assets under management. They also have an indirect impact on the interest of individual investors in the theory of responsible investment by adjusting their offerings adequately. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to determine to what extent the performance of open-ended socially responsible investment funds reflects changes in asset prices on the capital market in Poland. Research methods: The analysis was carried out for the period from 1 January 2020 to 1 January 2022. Daily quotes for SRI funds were used, while only funds that operated continuously during the set period were selected. The WIG and WIGESG indexes were used as stock market benchmarks. Due to the fact that mutual funds are quoted once a day, a simple daily rate of return was used in the study. Using the linear correlation coefficient, a correlation matrix was constructed between the daily returns of the funds and the adopted benchmarks. The study was conducted with the use of the linear regression method to verify the impact of capital market price changes on the returns achieved by SRI mutual funds. Then, using the method of least squares, the model parameters were estimated for SRI funds. Main findings: The results confirmed the influence of market benchmarks on the development of SRI fund returns in Poland. In addition, the results confirmed that the conventional benchmark (WIG) has a greater impact on fund returns than the ESG benchmark (WIGESG).

Opis:
Economists believe the interest rate is an interim agent for savings, which promotes the people to lose their present consumption continuously. So, this study also assumed that there was a relationship between the interest rate and savings. Based on that, the objective of this study was to explore the interest rate dynamics on savings in Sri Lank over the period of 1977 to 2017. In this study annual time series data for the following variables: interest rate, savings, and gross domestic product were used, and the Johansen and Juselius cointegration technique was employed to test the cointegration relationship between the variables. In this study, interest rate was considered as key independent variable and savings was dependent variable. Both Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Kwiatkowski – Phillips – Schmidt – Shin tests were employed to test the stationarity of the variables. In terms of these tests, all variable were stationary at first difference level. Furthermore, interest rate and savings had the long run relationship and there was short-run causality between interest rate and savings which was confirmed by the results of Vector Error Correction model (VECM). Therefore, the interest rate had long - run and short - run relationship on the savings in Sri Lanka. Finally, this study recommends the policy makers should consider interest rate friendly policy to boost the savings in Sri Lanka.

Urban population refers to people living in urban areas as defined by national statistical offices. It is calculated using World Bank population estimates and urban ratios from the United Nations World Urbanization Prospects. Aggregation of urban and rural population may not add up to total population because of different country coverages. The study based on the Kalmunai MC area and the main objective of this study is to identify the emerging challenges of urbanization in the study area. The study used the methodologies are primary data collection as questionnaire, interview, observation and the secondary data collection and SWOT analysis to made for getting the better result. The study finds that the SWOT analysis process provided a number of results and ideas for future planning. Collecting the results around themes has highlighted the breadth of ideas within KMC. A number of common issues emerged which require immediate action and clearly relate to developing KMC as a resilient urban. However, to generate energy requires heap quantities of plastic wastage and as a result of the process a byproduct of methane will be produced. Nevertheless, this process is not much financially viable as the quantities are limited in Sri Lanka. Control of water pollution is the demand of the day cooperation of the common man, social organizations, natural government and non -governmental organizations; is required for controlling water pollution through different curative measures. Domestic waste and sewage may treat before following them directly in drinking water sources.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Gaming disorder is defined as a pattern of gaming behaviour characterised by impaired control over gaming, prioritisation of gaming over other activities to the point where gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and persistence or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences. Given the increasing global interest in videogames, particularly among adolescents and young adults, this study investigated the prevalence of gaming disorder and its associated factors among Sri Lankan adolescents and young adults, with a focus on factors associated with gaming addiction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 401 Sri Lankan adolescents and young adults who played video games, through an anonymous online survey using snowball sampling. The survey comprised four sections: demographic data, influencing factors for game playing, the seven-item Game Addiction Scale and a validated depression scale (nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire). SPSS IBM (version 27) was used for data analysis, which includes means, standard deviations, frequencies, percentages, Pearson’s correlation and chi-square tests. RESULTS: A total of 401 gamers participated, comprising adolescents (10-18 years; 9.5%) and young adults (19-35 years; 90.5%). The majority were non-gaming addicts (71.57%), and among the gaming addicts, 8.48% were classified as monothetic gaming addicts, while 19.5% were classified polythetic gaming addicts. Slightly more males were game addicts (52.63%) than females. There was a low positive correlation between videogame addiction and depression (r=0.321). More than half of the sample believed that visual triggers (58.6%) and frequent reward systems (56.1%) influenced their gameplay. There was a significant association (p <0.05) between gaming addiction and the three observed characteristics: visual triggers, audio triggers, and frequent rewards. CONCLUSIONS: Just under one-tenth of the study population sampled was classified as having a gaming addiction, with males having a slightly higher prevalence than females. The positive correlation between gaming disorder and depression suggests a consequential and potentially life-threatening outcome, wherein depression emerges as a serious consequence of addiction to gaming. When the structural characteristics of videogames, such as auditory, visual and frequent reward systems were considered, game addicts were more influenced by them.

Opis:
For many years, we have seen an increasing interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR). Within this concept, Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is developing. This includes the emergence of stock indices of companies that meet the highest environmental, social and governance (ESG) requirements. Special stakeholders, such as investors, are paying more and more attention to the composition of stock exchange indices based on socially responsible companies. The presented paper discusses the topic of responsible investing in Poland, and its main aim is to analyze and evaluate the selection process of companies in the RESPECT Index and to present the evolution that has been made since its inception. However it cannot be clearly stated that the companies included in this index are characterized by a high level of implementation of CSR strategies. Stakeholders, especially investors potentially interested in investing in companies from this index, may feel some information insecurity associated with the description of the qualification of the companies in this index. They may also have some doubts as to the use of a survey to evaluate companies from ESG data.

Female farmers were selected by using a simple random sampling method from these purposively selected GN divisions. A pre-tested, interviewer-administered questionnaire survey was used as the primary data collection method from March to July 2019. Data analysis was done by using descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis. The result revealed that the majority (62.6%) of respondents were middle aged (40-59 years), married, and belonged to families with 4-5 members. Most respondents (64.3 %) had studied up to junior secondary education level. Their average farm land size is 0.84 acres and they have farming experience of about 15 years. Most of the respondents mentioned that they had obtained higher levels of information needs about improved crop varieties. In addition, female farmers reported that they moderately need information on application of agrochemicals, improved market systems and modern farming technologies. Extension agents and other female farmers act as their major sources of agricultural information and ICT equipment acts as the least important agricultural information source in this area. Moreover, there is a significant positive association between the agricultural information needs and food production. Therefore, providing necessary agricultural information and enhanced utilization of ICT tools for agricultural information sources, and encouraging female farmers to participate in farming societies will lead to enhanced food production in this area.

Opis:
Many countries are formulating organic agriculture or organic farming policies aimed at sustainable agricultural development. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: to understand the present situation of organic agriculture policies in Sri Lanka and also in other countries where successful organic agriculture is operating; identify problems in the organic agriculture sector; and suggest potential policy measures to be implemented in Sri Lanka in future. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a thorough literature review was conducted to study the suitable policies available in other countries and also in Sri Lanka at present. In the second stage, two field surveys were carried out using pre-tested questionnaires, from December 2019 to May 2020, in order to gather farmers’ and extension officers’ information related to organic farming policy suggestions. According to the findings of the literature review, organic systems in some countries are more integrated with national strategic plans and visions. Those governments are more involved in new initiatives and farmers are encouraged to go organic through reliable and feasible policies. Although Sri Lanka has a high potential for organic agriculture, at present it is at an initial stage. While most organic products in Sri Lanka go to the export market, a small portion is kept at local markets. Demand for organic products in export as well as domestic markets is increasing. Even though there are seven international food certification agencies operating in the country as external inspection and certification bodies, a limited number of accredited certifications exist for products on the domestic market. Results of the farmers’ survey showed that even if farmers have a significant level of knowledge, few of them practice organic farming due to several existing problems. Moreover, extension officers have also identified similar types of problems that are faced by the farmers related to organic farming. Evaluation of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) related to organic agriculture in the country helped to identify key problems facing policy-makers when balancing the supply and demand sides of organic products. Also, in developing organic agriculture, an effective linkage and coordination among government and private participants is crucial. Therefore, in Sri Lanka in this context, strategic focus on policy support for organic agriculture is needed. Current organic farming programs need to be revised in order to formulate policies covering all areas related to production, handling, processing, certification, labeling and marketing, in order to bring the benefits of organic agriculture to farmers, marketers and consumers in a fair manner.

A sample of 145 women farmers from five Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions of the DS division was randomly selected for the study. Data were collected from a researcher administered survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a regression analysis. As per the results, a significant number of the women farmers have participated in most of the extension and training programs. However, some of them haven’t registered in the farmer organization present in the area. Agricultural extension agents of the area have focused on dissemination of more information regarding modern farming technologies, organic farming, application of agrochemicals and fertilizers, and improving market systems. The majority of women farmers have used the knowledge received from the extension programs in vegetable farming activities. Furthermore, there is a significant and positive relationship between participation in extension programs by women farmers and an increase in vegetable production. Therefore, encouragement of women farmers to register in the farmer organization, provision of timely important extension service to them, organizing training programs, and workshops to disseminate agricultural information are crucial to further enhancement of vegetable production in this area.

Assessment of temporal variation of the water quality is an essential aspect of evaluating temporary changes in a water body caused by natural or artificial contributions. The study aims to assess the water quality temporal variation and the water quality index over the year from 2010 to 2019. Water sampling was carried out near the bridge of the Kotte canal. Water quality parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were determined to assess the quality of water at different periods. It has been calculated based on the standard of the central environmental authority of Sri Lanka. The weighted arithmetic index method has been used to calculate the water quality index. The water quality index of the study area was recorded as good (33.60760) in 2010 and poor in 2013 (56.95663), 2016 (52.37269), and 2019 (69.04417). The study revealed that the water temperature in the canal fluctuates with the time and climate of the area. The EC of the water is registered within the reference range. However, pH, COD, DO, and ammonia are the main water parameters deviating from the reference range. It is observed that the leading causes of the deterioration of water quality are human activities, the illegal discharge of sewage and industrial wastewater, the lack of adequate sanitation facilities, and urban runoff.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a relatively new disease in Sri Lanka and across the world. It has had a significant impact on all aspects of human life, contributing to a decline in public health. Due to an increasing number of reported and suspected cases, the quality of life in many communities has deteriorated. This study aimed to determine the public perception regarding COVID-19 prevention and work-life balance during the COVID 19 pandemic period in Sri Lanka. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study. A cross-sectional online survey of 648 Sri Lankan citizens was conducted from the 30th of April 2020 to the 17th of January 2021. Participants were identified through the snowball sampling method. A pre-tested questionnaire was used for data collection which consisted of details of demographic characteristics, COVID-19 prevention measures, and work-life balance during the curfew period. Descriptive statistics were employed in the data analysis. RESULTS: Regarding COVID-19 prevention, 94% of the participants perceived that COVID-19 is highly contagious, and 93% believed that there is no proper established treatment plan for COVID 19. The majority of the participants rated self-quarantine (98.9%) and washing hands frequently (81.9%) as an effective measure for preventing COVID- 19. 96.8% of participants accepted to cooperate with self-quarantine if they were found to have fever and cough. The social stigma was reported as a major constrain for expressing travel history. In the aspect of work-life balance, the majority of the participants were economically unstable (53.2%) and spending time happily with their families (94.8%) during the COVID-19 curfew (lockdown) period. 95.4% of the participants have not broken any laws (laws related to curfew/ quarantine) during the COVID-19 epidemic in Sri Lanka. The monotone of activities was identified as a major cause for increasing stress during the COVID-19 lockdown period. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated that Sri Lankans who participated in the survey have an acceptable level of awareness in COVID-19 prevention measures, and that monotony of sedentary life was the leading cause of stress throughout the lockdown period.

The paper aims to present the structure of weather types at two meteorological stations Galle and Nuwara Eliya (Sri Lanka). The weather type is determined as a generalized characteristic of the weather by features and gradation of selected meteorological elements. All available data on daily average, maximum and minimum air temperature, the average daily total cloud amount and the daily precipitation amount come from OGIMET database and have been used to designate weather types. The analysis was performed for the period April 2002 - March 2012. The weather types were designated based on the modified A. Woś (2010) classification of weather types. The frequency of groups, subgroups, classes, and types of weather were determined. Additionally, determined frequency of sequences of days with the same weather type. The analysis allows to conclude, that the structure of weather types at both stations was poorly differentiated. There were very stable weather conditions. Opis:
This study was conducted using secondary data from the Meteorological Department obtained from five stations in Ratnapura District: Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Balangoda, Lellopitiya and Embilipitiya. The objective of the study was ‘to identify rainfall trend and variability analysis in the study area and to find the impact of climate changes on rainfall variability in the study area’. The average rainfall in the selected stations are: in Embilipitiya - between 112 mm to 170 mm, in Balangoda - from 170 mm to 230 mm, Lellopitiya – from 230 mm - 290 mm and both Ratnapura and Eheliyagoda - 290 mm to 360 mm. To identify the rainfall variability, the moving average technique was employed, using 7 years of data. According to the result of this study, climate change has impact on rainfall variability in the Ratnapura District.
