Opis:
Development strategy for the port of Gdańsk assumes that , up to 2027, it will become the main transport centre in the Baltic Sea region. To this end , for many years work has been carried out to facilitate access to the port both by sea and land. One of the elements of extension of the port is the building of another terminal of Deepwater Container Terminal , Gdańsk. In this task, geotechnical operations aimed at appropriate preparation of subgrade for storage of containers and operation of cranes, have been especially important. Effectiveness of the assumed design solution of land-side girder for gantry crane has been verified by means of a technical monitoring system. This paper presents main elements of design the land-side girder of a new quay of the container terminal in Gdańsk, together with its computational analysis, as well as the results collected during a few months of observation, which have revealed real work of monitored elements.

Opis:
Laboratory for Materials Strength Testing (LMST) has been conducting accredited mechanical research for aviation from 2003. Among accredited procedures are e.g. low and high cycle fatigue tests, fracture toughness tests and fatigue crack growth rate tests. The main goal of them is obtaining materials constants and characteristics. However knowledge how to conduct these tests could be used also in other applications, for instance in the work on development of Structural Health Monitoring systems (SHM). When cracks propagate in a controlled way in laboratory conditions, it allows verifying the operation of a single sensor or a network of sensors. In this paper, an overview of mechanical tests carried out at the Laboratory for Materials Strength Testing within Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) work on research and development of SHM systems is presented. Specimens prepared from materials such as aluminum alloys (among other withdrawn PZL-130 Orlik TC-II aircraft) and CFRP composite were tested under different mechanical loads, i.e., cycle and impact loads. In the presented research, both constant amplitude and spectrum loads were applied.

Opis:
A comparative assessment of several scalar and vector statistical time series methods for vibration based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is presented via their application to a laboratory scale aircraft skeleton structure in which different damage scenarios correspond to the loosening of different bolts. A concise overview of scalar and vector methods, that is methods using scalar or vector signals, statistics, and corresponding models, is presented. The methods are further classified as nonparametric or parametric and response-only or excitation-response. The effectiveness of the methods for both damage detection and identification is assessed via various test cases corresponding to different damage scenarios. The results of the study reveal various facets of the methods and confirm the global damage diagnosis capability and the effectiveness of both scalar and vector statistical time series methods for SHM.

This paper presents the first step in the methodological approach to the validation of the metal magnetic memory (MMM) method in the non-destructive testing (NDT) applications and in the systems used for diagnosis of early stages of material fatigue in mechanical constructions (structural health monitoring, SHM, and prognosis health management, PHM). The study is focused on the properties of the external natural source of magnetisation of the object under MMM examination and the impact of the magnetisation components. The precise data obtained from measurements of the Earth's geomagnetism (from ground stations and satellites) and the revised model of the Earth's magnetism can be applied in order to calibrate high sensitivity magnetic field sensors, validate the measurement results and extend the functional capacity of the MMM method.

Since 2000 when the My Thuan Bridge, the first cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam, was put into operation, and now Vietnam has more than 20 types of cable-stayed bridges constructed throughout the country in the last two decades, which is a significant accomplishment for a developing country like Vietnam. Therefore, the SHM system is gradually being designed and installed for cable stayed bridges to ensure economic exploitation and safety. Due to the limited of financing sources, these systems are very limited, and their quality have a lot to be desired. Also, due to the lack of appropriate classification personnel with experience in the SHM system, these systems encountered a lot of problems. In this article author will deeply analyze the mistakes and problems of these SHM systems, which already exist in Vietnam, to find solutions for the future. Therefore, this will open up new prospects, new challenges and possibilities for the development of these systems in Vietnam in the near future.

Opis:
Structural monitoring systems are widely adopted to monitor the behaviour of structures during forced vibration testing or natural excitation. Structural monitoring systems can be found in a number of common structures including aircrafts, ships, bridges, mechanical and civil structures. For example, some building design codes mandate that structures located in regions of high seismic activity have structural monitoring systems installed. This paper is focused on selected problems review of the health monitoring of tall type buildings and automation. The actual problem in structural health monitoring (SHM) is to find the structural damage and its location by performing some statistical pattern recognition on the measured data termed as feature extraction. The damage caused by environmental loads should be repaired; otherwise, it will expand with time and might lead to complete system failure. Dynamic parameters such as velocity, acceleration, and displacement play a significant role in determining the structure dynamics. As well as this paper highlights comprehensive survey about monitoring system used in civil structures (buildings) involving the issues such as influence of different outer forces on buildings and other critical methods for proper analysis of monitoring system used in tall type buildings. Additionally, wide-scale review related to an automation aspect of structural health monitoring of buildings has been presented. A significant observation from this review is that although there are many more SHM studies being reported, the investigators, in general, have not yet fully embraced the well-developed tools from statistical pattern recognition. As such, the discrimination procedures employed are often lacking the appropriate rigor necessary for this technology to evolve beyond demonstration problems carried out in laboratory setting.

Opis:
SHM is a monitoring system which uses sensors, actuators and data transmission, acquisition and analysis, permanently integrated with the inspected object. The objective of SHM is to detect, localize, identify and predict development of fatigue fractures, increasing safety and reliability. This paper presents an assessment of sensor technologies used in aircraft SHM system. Due to the fact that most of these measurement methods are relatively new and still under development the present appraisal focuses on a number of parameters with reference to each method, including a sensor’s installation issues, reliability, power consumption, sensor infrastructure, sensitivity and cost and availability. The work is predominantly focused on the assessment of permanently bonded sensors, such as foil strain gages, Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM), Piezo sensors (PZT), Eddy-Current Transducers (ECT). Finally, all these methods are briefly discussed.

Among structural health monitoring (SHM) methods of thin-walled structures, a vibrodiagnostic method is one of the most promising. The accelerometer recorded responses provide diagnostic information that requires mathematical processing to extract the essential dynamic characteristics. The authors have been looking for new parameters - diagnostic benchmarks which can be applied to non-destructive, automatic testing of thin-walled marine structures (especially their welded joints) like ship hulls. All characteristics have been based on recorded data generated during the vibration tests of welded joints with and without failures. For this purpose, the authors proposed method based on: FFT windowing analysis, benchmark with using 2D or 3D time – frequency dynamic characteristics and the determination of damping decrement in function of time. The work presents the algorithm and exemplary results obtained from the application of proposed method to several selected sample plates with different type of welds.

All characteristics have been based on recorded data generated during the vibration tests of welded joints with and without failures. The article deals with the methods of assessing welding joints using 2D: time – frequency dynamic characteristics. A calculation procedure used for analysing simultaneous changes of the response modules, registered by acceleration sensors was presented. Vibrations amplitudes were transformed to a function of time and frequency (simultaneously) and presented over 2D time – frequency characteristics. The analyses of the characteristics were performed for a plate without any welded joint, for a plate with non-defected welded joint and for a plate with a welded joint defected by an edge bonding. Having analysed registered 2D time – frequency dynamic characteristics it can be noticed that presenting the responses analysed simultaneously over the time and frequency allows evaluating if examined system maintains non-linearity and, at the same time, it allows to indirectly assess the quality of the welded joint. The proposed measure parameters of the quality of a welded joint can be defined as a dispersion of colours on the obtained characteristics. The faults (and the vibration nonlinearity) of the welded joints is bigger if the dispersion is greater.

Opis:
Nowadays multi-layered composite material is very often applied in different kind of structures, like aircrafts, boats or vehicles. Parts of structures, which are made of these materials, are significantly lighter in comparison with traditional materials, like aluminum or steel alloys. On the other hand, the process of damage creation and evolution in the case of composites is much more complex. Moreover, the damages, which are characteristic for multi-layered materials (matrix cracking, fibre breakage, delaminations), are very difficult to detect at early stage of creation. Hence, there is a need to develop the advanced methods to detect them without destroying tested composite element. One of them is based on analysis of elastic wave propagation through the composite structure. Unfortunately, elastic waves possess strongly dispersive character. Thus, it is necessary to determine dispersion curves for investigated material before the tests in order to appropriate interpretation of received dynamic response of structure. In the case of arbitrary composite materials, it is rather challenging task. In the present article the relatively new, analytical method is applied, namely stiffness matrix method. The fundamental assumptions and the theoretical formulation of this method are discussed. Next numerical examples are presented, namely the dispersion curves are determined for the single orthotropic lamina and multi-layered 'quasi - isotropic' composite plate. The studied plates are made of glass fibres and epoxy resin. In the case of single lamina, the dispersion curves are determined in the parallel, perpendicular and arbitrary direction of waves propagation with respect to the fibre direction. In the case of multi-layered plates, the dispersion curves are computed for one arbitrary direction. Additionally, the phase and group velocities for fundamental modes and fixed excitation frequency are estimated in all directions of waves propagation.

Opis:
During its operation, the laminate shell of the watercraft hull can be exposed to local stability losses caused by the appearance and development of delaminations. The sources of these delaminations are discontinuities, created both in the production process and as a result of bumps of foreign bodies into the hull in operation. In the environment of fatigue loads acting on the hull, the delaminations propagate and lead to the loss of load capacity of the hull structure. There is a need to improve diagnostic systems used in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of laminate hull elements to detect and monitor the development of the delaminations. Effective diagnostic systems used for delamination assessment base on expert systems. Along with other tools, the expert diagnostic advisory systems make use of the non-destructive examination method which consists in generating elastic waves in the hull shell structure and observing their changes by comparing the recorded signal with damage patterns collected in the expert system database. This system requires introducing certain patterns to its knowledge base, based on the results of experimental examinations performed on specimens with implemented artificial delaminations. The article presents the results of the examination oriented on assessing the delaminations artificially generated in the structure of glass- and carbon-epoxy laminates by introducing local non-adhesive layers with the aid of thin polyethylene film, teflon insert, or thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol. The efficiency of each method was assessed using laser vibrometry. The effect of the depth of delamination position in the laminate on the efficiency of the applied method is documented as well.
