Opis:
The most common eye disease associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection is conjunctivitis. COVID-19 also predisposes to other manifestations and complications in the organ of vision, often very unusual or not suspected of viral etiology. Since patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have a higher risk of thromboembolic complications, they may experience such far-reaching consequences as, for example, occlusion of a vein or central retinal artery. The paper presents cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection with ophthalmic symptoms.
W pracy przedstawiono przypadki zakażenia SARS-CoV-2 z objawami okulistycznymi.

Introduction and aim. We aimed to investigate whether systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were associated with short-term mortality in geriatric patients with SARS-CoV-2.Material and methods. Our study was designed retrospectively. The data of patients that presented to a single center. The primary outcome of the study was the diagnostic value of SII and PNI in predicting 28-day mortality in geriatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Results. 272 geriatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 included. The median PNI was 42.5, and the median SII was 687.6 (430–1404.2). In univariant analysis, PNI and SII has a significant relationship with mortality (p<0.001 and p=0.008, Mann-Whitney U test). PNI had an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.680, which was significantly higher than that of SII (AUC: 0.6). The odds ratio of PNI (>40.1) and SII (<1.267) for 30-day mortality were determined as 1.12 , and 1. Conclusion. In conclusion, the blood tests used to calculate PNI and SII are routinely included in complete blood count and biochemistry tests that can be performed in every hospital. According to the results of the current study, the mortality group had significantly higher SII values and significantly lower.

Opis:
ObjectivesThe COVID-19 pandemic is due to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections. It swept across the world in the spring of 2020, and so far it has caused a huge number of hospitalizations and deaths. In the present study, the authors investigated serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody prevalence in the period of June 1–September 25, 2020, in 7561 subjects in Modena, Northern Italy.Material and MethodsThe study population included 5454 workers referred to testing by their companies, and 2107 residents in the Modena area who accessed testing through self-referral.ResultsThe authors found the overall seroprevalence to be 4.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.2–5.2%), which was higher in women (5.4%, 95% CI: 4.5–6.2%) than in men (4.3%, 95% CI: 3.7–4.9%), and in the oldest age groups (7.3%, 95% CI: 5.2–9.3% for persons aged 60–69 years, and 11.8%, 95% CI: 8.6–15.1%, for persons aged ≥70 years). Among the occupational categories, the highest seroprevalence was found in healthcare workers (8.8%, 95% CI: 7.0–10.5%), dealers and vehicle repairers (5.2%, 95% CI: 2.9–7.6%), and workers in the sports sector (4.0%, 95% CI: 1.8–6.1%), while there was little or no such evidence for those employed in sectors such as transport and storage, accommodation and restaurant services, and the school system. Conclusions: These results have allowed, for the first time, to assess population seroprevalence in this area of Italy severely hit by the epidemic, while at the same time identifying the subgroups at a higher risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

Purpose: The authors analyze the decisions made from March to September 2020 which affected the functioning of Polish health care facilities. According to the authors, that period determined and significantly influenced the decisions taken by state authorities during the subsequent waves of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis of the issue presented in the paper will be a descriptive one. The research exploration will be carried out using the desk research method. Findings: Analyses of secondary and compilation documents showed that the authorities of the Republic of Poland were not prepared to manage the state in unprecedented conditions caused by the first wave of the pandemic, and the decisions taken at that time by public administration bodies were chaotic, not always well thought out and often influenced by public opinion. Originality/value (mandatory) The article can be considered original due to the fact that it combines an analysis of Polish legal acts issued during the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic with, above all, an analysis of their social effects. The analyses showed that Polish authorities were not prepared for the pandemic crisis. The article is addressed to state administration employees as well as employees and students of universities with majors in national defense, public safety, medicine, medical rescue and public health. It may become a basis for developing legal acts of a preventive nature, which can be immediately applied in the event of another epidemic.

The treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater is a source for a large number of airborne microorganisms, which can be released at the environment during mechanical aeration. A meta-analysis of up to 14 industrial and municipal treatment plants was performed to determine the bacterial count in bioaerosols, as well as antibiotic resistance, at different stages of the wastewater treatment (pretreatment, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment), in comparison with bacterial counts of the ambient air surrounding the treatment plants. The highest contamination of the air with microorganisms was observed in the raw sewage inlet and at the biological reactor. In most analyzes, the air in the wastewater treatment plant was characterized by a higher content of microorganisms than at the control point. Bioaerosols from water treatment might be an important source of antibiotic resistance genes, which can be transported considerable distances and can represent a potential risk to humans. Therefore, employees should recognize the health risks associated with the absence of personal protective equipment, such as masks or respirators.

Background. The aim of the study was evaluate the strength of the respiratory muscles, bite force, and occlusal force distribution of professional soccer players after training and detraining resulting from the lockdown that occurred during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Material and methods. Twelve male soccer players (age, 19-34 years) were subjected to respiratory muscle strength analysis by examining the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, maximum molar bite force (right and left sides), and occlusal force distribution of the first permanent molars. Comparisons of variables after training and detraining were analyzed using the paired-sample t-test (p < 0.05), and the correlation between respiratory variables was measured using the Pearson test (p < 0.05). Results. There were no significant differences in the bite force and occlusal force distributions after training and detraining. The correlation results showed moderate positivity between the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures during the training period. Conclusions. The results suggest that when soccer players strengthen the inspiratory muscles, they also strengthen the expiratory muscles and that detraining does not impact the athlete's organic function, especially the respiratory muscle function and the forces of the occlusal contact of the first permanent molars.

Opis:
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the greatest challenges of modern medicine. Despite implemented social and economic restrictions, the epidemiological situation is still dynamic. Otolaryngologists, especially rhynologists, are at particular risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In order to reduce the spread of the virus, it is necessary to implement procedures to minimize the risk of transmission between healthcare professionals and patients. Due to the location of the virus, it is very important with regard to rhinologic procedures and surgery. Literature review: We reviewed the literature on the topic and presented effective methods of reducing the likelihood of virus transmission during surgery of the nasal and paranasal sinuses performed in our center. It is important that the restrictions brought about by the pandemic do not affect the length of diagnostic process and delay initiation of oncological treatment. Malignancies of the nasal region and paranasal sinuses are detected relatively late due to the time the symptoms appear, and further delays starting therapy can be extremely unfavorable. We believe that at present rhinologic procedures, especially in people with unknown epidemiological status, should be limited to the necessary minimum – life-threatening conditions and tumor resections. Even in such cases, however, it is necessary to strictly follow the procedures in order to reduce the risk of virus transmission. We hope that implementation of the guidelines presented in this work will help fight against the current pandemic and its subsequent waves.

Chronically hemodialyzed (HD) patients are at a high risk of developing very severe forms of COVID-19 disease. In this article we describe three HD patients (all males, aged 70, 70 and 74 years) vaccinated intramuscularly with a two-dose mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine; BionTech/Pfizer Comirnaty, in whom subsequent breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections developed. All patients achieved post-vaccine seroconversion for anti-spike antibodies with IgG titers of 445, 227 and 92.5 AU/mL (cut-off, 13 AU/mL) case 1, 2 and 3 respectively. SARS-CoV-2 infection was diagnosed 44, 28 and 48 days after the second dose of BNT162b2 and confirmed with the polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) test. Two asymptomatic patients underwent this test because of their direct contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19. The third patient reported only a non-significant drop in oxygen saturation, and was hospitalized (case 3). All these patients were characterized by a low post-vaccination neutralizing antibody titer and a high production of these antibodies after falling ill (795, 845 and 5770). Perhaps this production of antibodies is responsible for the mild course of the disease, and the likely reduction of mortality. These breakthrough cases in no way undermine the importance of the vaccinations, and on the contrary argue for their urgency.

Critical events of a dangerous progression, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, may become the turning points in the functioning of entire societies. Such events obviously foster changes. They disrupt the sense of ontological security, generate fears and enforce change in the organization of social relations, also in a creative and positive manner. In addition to these effects, they also induce many others. They are a magnifier enabling you to see how modern societies are functioning. Therefore, a pandemic allows to see and describe more clearly the characteristics of postmodern human communities. Some of these characteristics (e.g. group functioning) are essentially constant and unchangeable for humans as a species. In turn, some features are very specific, characteristic for a given time, type of events and nature of participating communities. In this text, based on the desk-research methodology and non-systematic participant observation, I indicate the unchanging characteristics of human communities that emerge in the moments of crisis. I also present the specific features of postmodern communities that have been highlighted by the pandemic. I try to indicate the effects of the pandemic on social relations in the future.

Introduction. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute infectious disease of the respiratory system caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Most patients present with typical, respiratory symptoms. Common signs include cough, fever, dyspnea and shortness of breath. In this case we provide atypical indications of COVID-19, which may occur earlier than respiratory symptoms. Aim. This case is an example of an unusual course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Description of the case. This article describes a case of a 63-year-old man and his wife, a 60-year old woman who were admitted to the emergency department with a few days’ history of gastrointestinal symptoms. Both patients presented with the digestive symptoms of nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite. They denied abdominal pain and the loss of smell or taste. Due to suspicion of SARS-CoV-2 infection a nasopharyngeal swabs of both patients was taken. The results of real- time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction were positive. When the final diagnosis of COVID-19 was established they were transported to another hospital. Conclusion. COVID-19 may manifest with atypical indications such a nausea and diarrhea. An atypical indications of COVID-19 may occur earlier than respiratory symptoms. It is important for clinicians to remain alert.

Background. SARS-CoV-2 virus is one of the largest RNA viruses, included in the coronavirus group, showing tropism to airway epithelial cells. SARS-CoV-2 causes an acute respiratory infectious disease, Covid-19. According to WHO reports, mortality due to Covid-19 is higher in the elderly and in those burdened with comorbidities such as diabetes, obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, cancer, hypertension, hepatitis B, obesity or chronic kidney disease. Objective. The aim of the study was to review the current literature on the influence and importance of vitamin D levels on the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Material and method. A systematic review of studies published from January 1, 2009 to June 31, 2021 has been performed. For this purpose, bibliographic databases such as PubMed and Scopus were searched. The following keywords and combinations were used: Covid-19, vitamin D, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D, vitamin D supplementation, SARS-CoV-2. Results. It has been shown that vitamin D plays an important role in the mechanisms of the innate immunity in the course of the acute respiratory infections. The overlapping factors of the severity of COVID-19 disease, vitamin D deficiency, and the prevalence of obesity, age scare, ethnicity, has led some researchers to hypothesize that vitamin D supplementation may be promising as a preventive or therapeutic measure for COVID-19. Conclusions. A very important factor that has an immunomodulatory character is vitamin D, the adequate supplementation of which can be a preventive or therapeutic measure in case of SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in elderly people, with obesity and other chronic diseases.

Opis:
This paper presents a description of the methodology developed for estimation of pathogen transmission in transport and the results of the case study application for long-distance passenger transport. The primary objective is to report the method developed and the application for case studies in various passenger transport services. The most important findings and achievements of the presented study are the original universal methodology to estimate the probability of pathogen transmission with full mathematical disclosure and an open process formula, to make it possible to take other specific mechanisms of virus transmission when providing transport services. The results presented conducted an analysis on the mechanisms of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogens during the transport process, to examine the chain of events as a result of which passengers may be infected. The author proposed a new method to estimate the probability of transmission of viral pathogens using the probability theory of the sum of elementary events. This is a new approach in this area, the advantage of which is a fully explicit mathematical formula that allows the method to be applied to various cases. The findings of this study can facilitate the management of epidemic risk in passenger transport operators and government administration. It should be clearly emphasised that the developed method and estimated values are the probabilities of pathogen transmission. Estimating the probability of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogen is not the same as the probability of viral infection, and more so the probability of contracting COVID-19. Viral infection strongly depends on viral mechanisms, exposure doses, and contact frequency. The probability of contracting COVID-19 and its complications depends on the individual characteristics of the immune system, even with confirmed viral infection. However, it is undoubtedly that the probability of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogen is the most reliable measure of infection risk, which can be estimated according to the objective determinants of pathogen transmission.

The disruptive impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic raised awareness of the need for elucidation of its’ conceptual framework among contemporary linguists. This paper attempts to reconstruct the most fundamental conceptual relations within the compound “SARS-CoV-2” in terms of the Conceptual Blending. The main hypothesis for this research states that certain compression patterns and the structural specificity of the emerging blend make the compound “SARS-CoV-2” an efficient conceptual and formal template for multi-scope blending in future linguistic research concerning mutations of the coronavirus. The topology of mental spaces, the emergent structure within the blend, main compression patterns emerging from specific contextual constraints, the interplay of various vital relations, the dynamics of change and the potential to scale down vital relations (transmissibility and transmission dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus) will be outlined. A seven-space-model of the SARS-CoV-2 conceptual integration network will be proposed. The results of analysis of intra- and outer-spatial vital relations connecting the input spaces and respective compression patterns will be demonstrated with reference to similarities and differences between SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2.

And although at the end of 2019 it seemed that it would remain a problem in the Far East, the mechanisms related to globalization and human mobility meant that within a few weeks the strength and capabilities of almost the entire globe were exposed to a huge challenge—similar for every country. All of this took place at a time when analysts boldly predicted another financial crisis—at a time of raging economic processes. These, in turn, are closely related to the necessity to incur foreign debts—especially in the case of developing countries. Therefore, it seems reasonable to analyze the current information in this regard, based on the published data and the position of analysts in this problematic area. At the same time, it will be an introduction to further analyses in-depth with comprehensive data for the coming months.
Będzie to jednocześnie wstęp do dalszych analiz, pogłębionych o całościowe dane z kolejnych miesięcy
