This paper is a review of the book: Michel Onfray, Sagesse: Savoir vivre au pied d’un volcan (Paris: Albin Michel, 2019). The author highlights that: (1) by arguing that Roman philosophy surpasses Greek thought on account of its practicality, Onfray sees Roman masculine virtue as part of a solution to the postmodern, post-Christian condition; (2) Onfray’s book provides Christians with understanding why many are tuning out to the Christian message even while feeling dissatisfied with the modern post-Christian world.

The writings of Marcus Tullius Cicero are often referred to by natural law theorists. But how do various points of Cicero’s philosophy of law—and of religion, justice, and the state—compare with similar themes from Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas? In this paper, I suggest a Thomistic-Aristotelian reading of Cicero as a way to contextualize and supplement the Roman philosopher’s work with more robust insights from Aristotle and St. Thomas, and especially from Aristotle as interpreted by St. Thomas in the later light of the Incarnation. I also show that Cicero’s natural law philosophy is inconsistent when taken on its own terms. Therefore, Cicero’s natural law philosophy—as well as his philosophy of religion, justice, and the state—should be subjected to a more critical examination by natural law scholars today.

The article is devoted to the problem of so-called Roman Stoicism - the final stage in the development of Stoic philosophy and school. The starting point is the scene of the crowning of Octavian Augustus by the goddess Oikumene on the so-called Gemma Augustea, a beautiful cameo that dates from the early reign of Emperor Tiberius. The presence of the figure of Oikumene there is puzzling because, as is well known, the term was used in Hellenistic philosophy (Stoic and Cynic) to denote the inhabited world. The fact that the figure of Oikumene was included in the imperial programme of Emperor Augustus shows that the Romans gave the concept a different meaning: in their understanding, Oikumene now meant the Roman world stricto sensu. It was a symbolic way of expressing Roman rule over the world. Thus, the figure of Oikumene on the gemma is evidence that the Romans did not passively repeat Stoic teaching, but used some of its elements to describe their rule over the world. More importantly, the very fact of having such a vast empire defined, as it were, the nature of Roman Stoicism in passing.

Scholars dealing with the "Meditations" - the famous work of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (in a Greek manuscript entitled: To Myself) - usually draw attention to its philosophical and religious dimension. This is fully understandable, since the notes of this of the ruler were in the nature of a private spiritual diary and, according to the rules of Stoic ethics, aimed at finding consolation and happiness. However, the article addresses a slightly different issue from those raised so far: the question of the 'Romanness', that is, the Roman character (Latin Romanitas) of this extraordinary literary monument. The starting point is the observation that this is a work written by a traditionally-minded, and homage to ancient values, Roman who, for nearly 20 years of his life (reigned 161-180 after Christ) held, in addition, the highest position in the Roman empire (Imperium Romanum). This means that, on a par with a philosophical reading of the treatise (and one that dominated scholarly research for many years, especially works on the history of philosophy), a political interpretation of this writing is fully justified. The adjective 'political' should not, of course, be understood here in its modern, narrow sense of the term, but rather in its Greek sense, denoting all the matters relating to the state.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the criticism that Roman Ingarden and Karol Wojtyła made of the ethical system proposed by Max Scheler. On the basis of the indicated similarities in the two critiques, the article defends the thesis that the anthropological and ethical solutions proposed by Wojtyła can complement or develop the anthropology proposed by Ingarden.
Celem artykułu jest analiza krytyki Romana Ingardena i Karola Wojtyły wobec systemu etycznego zaproponowanego przez Maksa Schelera. Na podstawie wskazanych podobieństw w obu krytykach artykuł broni tezy, że zaproponowane przez Wojtyłę rozwiązania antropologiczne i etyczne mogą uzupełniać lub rozwijać antropologię proponowaną przez Ingardena.

The phenomenon of slavery existed throughout the entire period of the ancient world and met with interest from both Greek and Roman philosophers. Despite the emerging views of various philosophers criticizing slavery as a social phenomenon, no theory of slavery was formulated then. The philosopher who-, in both his works and correspondence, included numerous references to the situation of slaves and the institution of slavery was M.T. Cicero. Searching for humanism in Cicero’s views on the above-mentioned issue, attention was drawn to the principles of the Stoic doctrine, within which the concept of human freedom was formulated, and to the essence of natural law. These concepts made it possible to analyse the discussed problem in the context of the words of Terence Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto. And as regards humanism in Cicero’s views, it is evident when he recognizes a human being in a slave; when he says that the principles of justice must be observed towards people from the lowest rank, which is the rank of slaves; when he firmly states that slavery is among the worst things that can happen to the human being. On the other hand, we see Cicero’s completely different views on slaves when he talks about punishing slaves, „keeping a tight rein on them,” or „destiny by nature for the best to rule others, and with great benefit for weaker beings”; also when he emphasizes his negative attitude towards the liberation of slaves. To conclude it should be emphasised that this characteristic feature of Cicero, namely his lack of uniformity of views on various philosophical doctrines, which we can also find in his views on slavery and the rank of slaves, does not prevent us from seeing a humanist in Cicero who, with his sense of justice, advocating the stoic doctrine and the principles of natural law, moved very slowly towards the stoic moral philosophy and all the ethical principles that Christianity would bring.
