    The article presents current issues regarding combined freight transport terminals (CFT terminals) in Germany, with particular attention to road/rail transport and the implementation of the latest technologies of rail/road handling of rolling stock in terminals. The brief description of the state of current knowledge about combined freight transport terminals in both organizational and technological aspects are introduced. Considerations are focused on the description of the development of selected facilities and trends in the field of terminal operations. Examples of currently implemented projects and best practices, especially the implementation of digital solutions, are presented.

    Safety in rail transport is a problem that many countries are struggling with. Rail transport is one of the main areas of Poland’s economic development. The authors analysed and interpreted statistical data on the condition of the railway infrastructure and rail safety, as well as identified the main causes of railway accidents. The development of rail infrastructure has a significant effect on freight and passenger transport safety. Among the most serious hazards in rail traffic are accidents and rail collisions. The most frequent rail accidents occur at level crossings, where those responsible are motor car drivers. There is a clear trend showing a decrease in the number of accidents with an increase in the percentage of well-preserved rail lines. This situation is a consequence of social awareness.

    W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono położenie Łodzi w sieci transportowej Polski oraz regionu łódzkiego. Skupiono się na lokalizacji ośrodka względem głównych elementów sieci drogowej, kolejowej i lotniczej we wskazanej skali krajowej i regionalnej. Ze względu na fizycznogeograficzne położenie Łodzi, te trzy gałęzie transportu wyczerpują możliwości transportowych powiązań miasta. Ponadto poddano charakterystyce relacje transportowe Łodzi w zakresie funkcjonującego transportu zbiorowego z uwzględnieniem wymienionych wcześniej form przewozu. Opracowanie zawiera również informacje na temat znaczenia Łodzi jako węzła transportowego przy przepływach ładunków. Wszystkie powyższe analizy poprzedzają rozważania nad lokalizacją Łodzi na tle transeuropejskich korytarzy transportowych oraz przegląd historycznych uwarunkowań powiązań transportowych obszaru dzisiejszej Łodzi.
    This article presents the location of Łódź in the transport network of Poland and the Łódź region. It focuses on the centre’s location in reference to the main elements of road, rail and air networks on a national and regional scale. Due to physical and geographical location of Łódź, the three branches of transport exhaust the city’s transport possibilities. Besides that, transport relations of Łódź are characterized as far as the functioning public transport is concerned, considering all the aforementioned modes of transport. The study also includes information on the significance of Łódź as a transport node for cargo transport. All these analyses precede reflections on the location of Łódź against the background of trans-European transport corridors as well as an overview of historical conditioning of transport connections of the area of today’s Łódź.

    The Polish market for rail freight services belongs to a group of markets with a relatively high level of liberalization. Strong competition on the Polish freight market, forcing the search for new sources of strategic advantage, is leading to processes of consolidation, merging and acquisition. There are high fees for access to the infrastructure, despite its relatively low quality of performance. Opportunities for rail-related international exchange are not being taken, the geographical location of Poland is not being taken advantage of and the quality of the services provided is low. An important role in the intensification of rail transport infrastructure is the condition of the railway network. The modernization of these networks by 2011 has improved the condition of the Polish railway infrastructure. The structure of the rail freight market by weight of cargo in Poland, the structure of the polish freight market, the dynamics of changes in the size of cargo in the years from 2006 to 2011 according to transported mass relative to the size of the cargo in 2004, advantages of rail freight services, problems with the development of the rail freight market are presented in the paper.

    This research paper is about the renewal, improvement and development of railroad transportation industry and planning for its contribution to the national and regional economic development. A theoretical exploration provided a guide for the necessary assessments. A research method based on the case study of almost all elements of the Iran railroad transportation system has been performed. The implementation of the observation by means of some indicators proves that hinders shall be removed to achieve maximum profit of the rail transport industry. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis aided to evaluate the features of the industry. The analysis revealed that the present system of the railroad transportation is unable to assist the national macro economy. The failure corresponds to scarcely investing, funding, managing, infrastructure, operating conditions, and international/regional trade limitations. However, with the help of the improvement plans the prospects for the rail transport development will be pretty satisfactory due to the strategic Geo-policy, climate, nature, and trade potentials. A linear programming for the rail transport industry (LPRTI) has been provided to suggest the ways for maximizing of the rail transport system’s profits to support the national macro economy. The outcome of this research paper assists the regional/national economies with the help of a successful railroad transportation industry everywhere in the world.

    In Poland, due to the increase in investments made by railways in recent years, and thus the increase in the replacement value of transport infrastructure, the need for expenditure on infrastructure maintenance will increase in the next 30 years, or the development of the developed transport network will degrade. As part of the overall discipline of resource management, subdiscipline has emerged - infrastructure asset management. As part of the management of railway transport infrastructure, the demand for cheaper maintenance costs will grow. The cost reduction of infrastructure maintenance is possible through meticulous assessment of its condition, rational selection of locations and scope of repairs at the assumed risk level, as well as at the stage of preparation of new construction or modernization projects taking into account aspects of later maintenance. For some time, we have been observing the accumulation of knowledge (methods, programs, procedures) in the country and abroad enabling optimization of infrastructure condition assessment and programming of its maintenance. The implementation of these solutions may result in a more rational use of funds for infrastructure maintenance and not disturb its smooth functioning in operation. The article discusses aspects that should be considered in the design process of railway infrastructure. Particular attention was paid to the durability of steel components of the railway superstructure, maintenance costs as well as aspects related to the capacity of the track node. An example of dependence of selected values of radial arcs depending on their durability and maintenance costs was presented. It was proposed to change the track layout at the Warszawa Srodmiescie passenger stop planned for reconstruction. Calculations of kinematic parameters for various configurations of railway turnouts were performed. Also, calculations of the capacity for the existing track system solution as well as the proposed track system after reconstruction of the analysed Warszawa Srodmiescie railway station were also carried out.

    This study analyzed the usage of data of track geometry measurement for railway infrastructure maintenance processing support and estimated its influence on railway infrastructure maintenance decision-making. Especially, the approach assessment of the influence of track geometry monitoring on railway infrastructure processing. The well-timed maintenance of the arrangement of railway tracks in allowable conditions is sufficient for the smooth and steady running of rail vehicles. The mechanism of track gauge widening during exploitation is usually gradual and relatively long-lasting. When are not detected in a timely manner, the final track failures often arise under the effect of additional factors, such as surpassed train speed limit, poorly maintained and functioning running gear of a rail vehicle, misalignment of rails, and extreme dynamical effects. A questionnaire considering the influence of the application of track geometry monitoring was formulated. An expert review was completed in order to perform a comparative analysis of the features of track geometry monitoring with the greatest influence on railway infrastructure maintenance processing. The data collected from respondents were processed using a multi-criterion estimation method, especially an interactive fuzzy linear assignment method. Finally, basic conclusions and considerations are given.

    The article deals with research on the relationship between the performance of road and rail freight transport and transport infrastructure in EU countries. The authors of the article examined the relationship between transport performance and transport infrastructure by correlation and regression analyses. Verification of the statistical significance of the regression model was also performed. The main objective of the contribution is to find out what are the relationships and influences between transport infrastructure and development of transport performance. Research has shown that the strength of the relationship between transport infrastructure and transport performance is different for states. There are strong dependencies as well as strong independent relationships between the transport infrastructure and transport performance.

    Diagnosis of the track superstructure is a significant element among the factors contributing to improvement of technical condition of railway infrastructure in Poland. Monitoring of the changes taking place on the running surface of the rails is very relevant taking into account the level of rail transport safety. The paper presents some factors influencing the process of degradation of the rail running surface as compared to selected defects considered and defined in the Catalogue of Rail Defects of the Polish Railway Lines. Some of the technical-operational parameters used in the analysis of the reasons for wear of railway rails are: the type of transport, traffic intensity and maximum allowable axle load. Based on the track geometry data, the places endangered by particular types of damage are specified. The results of the analysis may be used in further studies on the degradation of railway infrastructure in Poland.
    Diagnostyka nawierzchni kolejowej jest istotnym elementem składowym czynników wpływających na poprawę stanu technicznego infrastruktury kolejowej w Polsce. Monitorowanie zmian zachodzących na powierzchni tocznej szyn jest bardzo ważnym elementem w kontekście poziomu bezpieczeństwa przewozów prowadzonych transportem szynowym. W artykule przedstawiono niektóre z czynników wpływające na proces degradacji powierzchni tocznej szyn w odniesieniu do wybranych uszkodzeń zawartych i zdefiniowanych w Katalogu Wad w Szynach Polskich Linii Kolejowych. Do analizy przyczyn zużyć szyn kolejowych przyjęto wybrane parametry techniczno – eksploatacyjne takie jak: rodzaj przewozów, obciążenie przewozami i ich maksymalne dopuszczalne naciski osi. Na podstawie danych o geometrii toru wyszczególniono miejsca zagrożeń na występowanie poszczególnych rodzajów uszkodzeń. Uzyskane wyniki analizy mogą posłużyć w dalszych badaniach dotyczących degradacji infrastruktury kolejowej w Polsce.

    Rare earth elements are used for specific products and components in the railway infrastructure. The application of rare earths in this sector includes fields such as command and control technology, power supply and telecommunication. The demand for these items continues to rise, whereas the natural supply remains limited. This can lead to escalation of prices and can advance to natural resource conflicts. In addition, the degradation of these elements is often carried out under conditions which can be life threatening or harmful. This contribution presents a new systematic approach for analysis of rare earths in the field of railway infrastructure. This fills the gap of studies in the sector of railway infrastructure regarding identification, substitution, recycling and innovation to replace these elements, which are well performed in other fields of technology and industry. This paper first provides the basics of rare earths and analyses their relevance in the sector. Furthermore, proposes a basic conceptual design of an information system for evaluation and analysis of these elements. This was done by contextual analysis where the relevant stakeholders such as infrastructure operators or industry, were identified. The analysis included the demand of the stakeholder for such an information system. Thus, the design and the architecture of an information system was specified. The system should provide a tool for operators of rail infrastructures to get a systematic overview on the use of rare earths elements and for strategic decisions, e.g. substitution by other elements, cooperation with suppliers for alternatives, including consideration of the Life Cycle Cost.
    Pierwiastki rzadkie są wykorzystywane do konkretnych produktów i komponentów infrastruktury kolejowej. Zastosowanie pierwiastków rzadkich w tym sektorze zawiera się w obszarach, takich jak: dowodzenie i techniki sterowania, zasilanie oraz telekomunikacja. Popyt na pierwiastki rzadkie nadal rośnie, podczas gdy naturalna podaż pozostaje ograniczona. Może to prowadzić do eskalacji cen, i przekształcić się w konflikty o zasoby naturalne. Ponadto, degradacja takich elementów często przeprowadzana jest w warunkach, które mogą stanowić zagrożenie dla życia. Artykuł pokazuje nowe podejście do analizy systematycznej pierwiastków rzadkich w obszarze infrastruktury kolejowej. Analiza wypełnia lukę w badaniach w sektorze infrastruktury kolejowej w zakresie identyfikacji, substytucji, recyklingu i innowacji elementów, które 112 F. Michelberger, H. Grossberger, P. Judmaier są dobrze opisane w innych dziedzinach techniki i przemysłu. Praca jako pierwsza dostarcza podstaw wiedzy obejmującej pierwiastki rzadkie i analizuje ich znaczenie w sektorze kolejowym. Ponadto, proponuje podstawowy projekt koncepcyjny systemu informacji do oceny i analizy tych elementów. Został on opracowany na podstawie analizy kontekstowej, w którym brały udział zainteresowane strony, takie jak operatorzy infrastruktury i przemysłu. W analizie uwzględniono zapotrzebowanie udziałowcy dla takiego systemu informatycznego. Zarówno projektowanie, jak i architektura systemu informacyjnego zostały określone. System powinien być narzędziem dla operatorów infrastruktury kolejowej tak, aby móc uzyskiwać systematyczny przegląd wykorzystania pierwiastków rzadkich i podejmować strategiczne decyzje, przykładowo dotyczące zastąpienia ich przez inne elementy, współpracy z dostawcami dla alternatyw, uwzględniania kosztu cyklu życia.

    The article presents the importance of a specific rail transport system in the logistics service of cargo transported between two generators of international trade in goods – China and the European Union. Using selected operational data relating to the railway systems of several countries (including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Russia, and Ukraine), it indicates the great economic importance of the 1520 Space – an area dominated by broad‑gauge infrastructure. Beyond the comparative aspect, and against the background of the influence and importance of railways for the economy, it presents the scope and costs of investments that are necessary and desirable to ensure the efficiency and optimization of goods flows. The study covers the growing share of Trans‑Eurasian container transport in the volume of cargo handled using the 1520 Space rail infrastructure, which is a key link in Trans‑Eurasian supply chains and of which the Russian railway system is an essential component.
    W artykule przedstawiono znaczenie specyficznego systemu transportu kolejowego w obsłudze logistycznej towarów przewożonych pomiędzy dwoma generatorami międzynarodowego handlu towarami – Chinami i Unią Europejską. Posługując się wybranymi danymi operacyjnymi, odnoszącymi się do systemów kolejowych kilku krajów (m.in. Białorusi, Kazachstanu, Łotwy, Rosji, Ukrainy), artykuł wskazuje na duże znaczenie gospodarcze systemu 1520 mm – tzw. infrastruktury szerokotorowej. Poza aspektem porównawczym, na tle wpływu i znaczenia transportu kolejowego dla gospodarki, przedstawiono w nim zakres i koszty inwestycji, które są niezbędne i pożądane dla zapewnienia efektywności i optymalizacji przepływów towarów. W badaniu uwzględniono rosnący znaczenie transeurazjatyckich przewozów kontenerowych w wolumenie ładunków obsługiwanych z wykorzystaniem infrastruktury kolejowej 1520 mm, która jest kluczowym ogniwem w transeurazjatyckich łańcuchach dostaw, a której kluczowym elementem pozostaje rosyjski system kolejowy.
