Opis:
Obtaining a suitable experimental cellular model is a major problem for neuroscience studies. Neuroblastoma cell lines have been often applied in studies related to pathological disorders of nervous system. However, in the search for an ideal model, these cells must be differentiated to cancel their tumor character. The subsequent reactions that are caused by differentiation are not always indifferent to the same model. We evaluated the effect of two well known substances, used for SH-N-SK cell line differentiation, retinoic acid (RA) and phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), on the induction of pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidative reactions in these cells. Cells differentiated with PMA were able to produce significantly higher amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines whereas the release of nitric oxide radicals was similar to that in undifferentiated cells. On the contrary, in RA-differentiated cells no significant changes in cytokine production were observed and the nitric oxide release was decreased. Additionally, the RA-differentiated neuronal model was more sensible to lipopolysaccharide stimulation, producing pro-inflammatory cytokines abundantly. These results suggest that RA-differentiated SH-N-SK cells provide a more suitable experimental model for the study of molecular and cellular mechanisms of the inflammation and oxidative stress in neuronal cells.

Opis:
Naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) still remains a problem in oil and gas exploration. Radioactive wastes from oil and gas drilling take the form of produced water, drilling mud, sludge, slimes, or evaporation ponds and pits. In many parts of the USA the soil contains radioactivity that is then concentrated in mineral scales on the pipes, storage tanks and other extraction equipment. The radionuclides 226Ra and its one of daughter products 210Pb and 228Ra from 232Th are the primary radionuclides of concern in the waste. We have investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in NORM using neutron activation analysis (NAA) as well as using passive radioactivity counting using Compton suppressed gamma-ray spectrometry. With a low-energy germanium counter and the Compton suppression system low detection limits were achieved to measure 226Ra, 228Ra and 210Pb. Results have shown very elevated amounts for these radionuclides as well as the heavy metals of barium and strontium.

Opis:
The role played by the magnetostatic interaction in mesoscopic multichannel systems is discussed. We show that the interaction of currents from different channels, when taken in the selfconsistent mean field approximation, leads to selfinductance terms in the Hamiltonian producing an internal magnetic flux. Such multichannel systems can exhibit spontaneous flux or flux expulsion. The dependence of these phenomena on the parameters of the system is discussed.

Opis:
Visual method of hair analysis in medicine is called phototrichogrametry. Method is based on the interpretation of two image showing the physical changes of the hair. The photos are taken in green light, exposing both thin and thick hairs. By the help of the software the density of facial hair is determined and intensity of growth is assessed. Length increment can be approximately determined also. standardization, objectivity, reliability, decreasing errors and saving time make this method valuable healing experiment platform.

Opis:
Collective phenomena due to persistent currents in carbon multiwall nanotubes are studied. The formula for persistent currents minimising free energy and conditions for the stability of persistent currents in multiwall nanotubes in magnetic field are derived. Numerical calculations performed show the possibility of obtaining spontaneous currents in two optimal configurations: undoped armchair-only multiwall nanotubes up to 0.01 K, and zig-zag-chiral-chiral-zig-zag multiwall nanotubes doped to -3.033 eV up to about 1 K. The latter configuration may exhibit also the diamagnetic expulsion of magnetic field, which according to our calculations can reach 20% of the external flux.

Opis:
Experimental results concerning persistent currents in small rings threaded by a magnetic flux do not agree with theoretical predictions, especially for experiments performed in diffusive regime. This suggests important role of disorder in these experiments. In this paper we demonstrate how impurities present in ring modify the persistent current by generating or enhancing charge density waves. The electronic correlations are taken into account for both repulsive as well as attractive electron-electron interaction. The calculations are carried out for one-dimensional rings consisting of up to 12 lattice sites using Lanczös exact diagonalization approach, and for finite-width much larger rings using the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations.

This work displays both longitudinal and transverse vibrations of magnetically affected inclined single-walled carbon nanotubes for conveying fluid flow. By employing an equivalent continuum structure on the basis of the nonlocal Timoshenko beam model as well as plug-like model for the nanofluidic flow inside the pore, the nonlocal governing equations are obtained accounting for nonlocality, frictionless nature of the inside wall, the Knudsen number, and full longitudinal and transverse interactions of the fluid flow with the single-walled carbon nanotubes. By implementing Galerkin-based assumed mode method, the equations of motion are discretized appropriately and then solved for the unknown dynamical deformation fields. The roles of nanofluidic flow velocity, small-scale parameter, inclination angle of single-walled carbon nanotube, and magnetic field strength on maximum values of longitudinal and transverse displacements are explained and discussed. The results show that the maximum dynamic deflection of the inclined nanotube would lessen by increase of the magnetic field strength. This fact is also more apparent for higher levels of fluid flow velocity. Additionally, variation of the longitudinal magnetic field has a trivial influence on the variation of longitudinal displacement. The predicted results reveal that application of the longitudinal magnetic field could be used as an efficient methodology to reduce the lateral vibrations of single-walled carbon nanotubes as nanofluidic conveyors.

The network of high volume aerosol samplers type ASS-500 in Poland, established mainly for monitoring radionuclides of artificial origin, offers also a unique opportunity for measuring natural radionuclide concentrations in ground-level air. Recounting of the closed (sealed) filters after a one month period, necessary for establishing radioactive equilibrium between 226Ra and 222Rn, as well as its short-lived decay products, remarkably improves the accuracy of 226Ra determination. The Currie's average detection and determination limits (with 10% relative accuracy) calculated for 226Ra for 160,000 s counting time and combined with the average filtered air volume of 60,000 m3 were 0.3 and 1.2 mi Bq/m3, respectively. The observed 226Ra concentrations in air in Lodz during the half year collection period, including parts of winter and summer seasons, were always above the detection limit and ranged from 0.76 to 2.75 mi Bq/m3. 226Ra, present in the ground level air mainly as a result of resuspension from the top layer of soil and fly ash emissions from coal burning, was used for rough estimation of the contribution of the coal combustion to the total suspended particulate matter. On the basis of available data for 226Ra content in the soil and fly ashes for the Lodz region of Poland, the calculated coal combustion input to the total air suspended particulate matter ranged from 8 to 39%.

We study the short time dynamics of a charge qubit encoded in two coherently coupled quantum dots connected to external electrodes. In the regime of sequential tunneling the waiting time distribution is used to investigate in details statistics of the tunneling events and their correlations. We show that the coherent rotation of the qubit state on the Bloch sphere can be seen in tunneling events when an electron is injected and leave the system. Decoherence, relaxation of the qubit state as well as leakage processes are studied by means of transient currents.

Opis:
We discuss some aspects of the problem of spin currents in magnetic nanostructures. One of them is related to the proper definition of the spin current and is generic for any electronic or magnetic system. Using the standard method related to the symmetry with respect to local spin transformations, we analyze the generation of equilibrium spin currents in inhomogeneous magnetic structures. As an example we consider the generation of persistent spin current in a mesoscopic ring.

Mineral and therapeutic waters widely occurring in the Polish Carpathians contain a vast amount of biogenic elements. However, radioactive elements like radium isotopes are also found in these waters. This paper presents the first results of the activity concentration measurements of 224Ra in selected mineral waters of the Polish Carpathians. Additionally, the content of 226Ra and 228Ra, and the activity ratios of 224Ra/228Ra, 224Ra/226Ra and 226Ra/228Ra in the waters were determined. The work was based on a method for the simultaneous determination of 224Ra, 226Ra and 228Ra in water samples using the a/b liquid scintillation spectrometer. The results show that the activity concentrations of 224Ra, 226Ra and 228Ra in the mineral waters are comparable and vary from ca. 220 mBq/L to above 1500 mBq/L. The activity ratios of 224Ra/228Ra, 224Ra/226Ra and 226Ra/228Ra are variable within the ranges of 0.68 to 1.48, 0.65 to 1.48, and 0.78 to 2.05, respectively. The committed effective dose resulting from the intake of 224Ra through the water consumption is far lower than that from 226Ra and 228Ra.

In the era of humanoid robotics, navigation and path planning of humanoids in complex environments have always remained as one of the most promising area of research. In this paper, a novel hybridized navigational controller is proposed using the logic of both classical technique and computational intelligence for path planning of humanoids. The proposed navigational controller is a hybridization of regression analysis with adaptive particle swarm optimization. The inputs given to the regression controller are in the forms of obstacle distances, and the output of the regression controller is interim turning angle. The output interim turning angle is again fed to the adaptive particle swarm optimization controller along with other inputs. The output of the adaptive particle swarm optimization controller termed as final turning angle acts as the directing factor for smooth navigation of humanoids in a complex environment. The proposed navigational controller is tested for single as well as multiple humanoids in both simulation and experimental environments. The results obtained from both the environments are compared against each other, and a good agreement between them is observed. Finally, the proposed hybridization technique is also tested against other existing navigational approaches for validation of better efficiency.

RM/RA CRAMM is a comprehensive risk assessment methodology for crisis management, which consists of identifying, analysing and assessing risks. Quantitative outputs serve as a basis for identifying risk management priorities, preparing preventive measures and responding to identified facts. The methodology is applicable to a wide range of risk types, natural risks, including fire risks, technology risks, criminal risks and other risks of a social nature.
