Opis:
This article presents a concept of a modern Poznań development in the early modernism era developed by Sylwester Pajzderski. Because the original publication describing spatial assumptions in 1929 no illustrations were placed, the author of this article attempted to somehow reconstruct selected design assumptions. A special attention was paid to depicting proposals of changes in town composition and structure in relation to the residential, industrial and green areas. The concept a modern town development postulated by Sylwester Pajzderski in the late 1920ies presented in this article was a reflection municipal needs at a specific point in time. It was not so revolutionary as subsequent Wł. Czernecki’s proposal in a general plan of Poznań in 1934. Nevertheless, it was characterised by substantial town planning knowledge and experience. We should bear in mind that from the point of view of an architect and town planner it is an interesting case documenting modern town planning thought Poland.
Przedstawiona w niniejszym artykule koncepcja rozwoju nowożytnego miasta autorstwa Sylwestra Pajzderskiego z końca lat 20. XX w. była odzwierciedleniem ówczesnych zapotrzebowań miasta. Nie była tak rewolucyjna jak późniejsza działalność W. Czarneckiego w planie ogólnym miasta Poznania z roku 1934. Niemniej jednak nosiła znamiona wiedzy i praktyki urbanistycznej. Należy mieć na uwadze fakt, że z punktu widzenia urbanisty jest ona ciekawym przypadkiem dokumentującym nowoczesną myśl urbanistyczną na obszarze Polski.

Opis:
The three universities – Poznań and Vilnius in Poland, Kaunas in Lithuania – had much in common: all three were founded in 1919, each promised studies in mathematics, and none possessed a native mathematician of its own. Mathematicians had to be taken from a far. Poznań relied on Zdzisław Krygowski (1872-1955), a newcomer from the Lvov polytechnic, who in the next twenty years laboriously worked up programs of studies and collected academic staff. Teaching was satisfactory (there was a course in cryptography, students of which have later broken the German Enigma) but research rather modest. In Vilnius there happened to be Wiktor Staniewicz (1866-1932), a refugee from the polytechnic in Petersburg. Being rather old and ill, he required support and that came in persons of Juliusz Rudnicki (1881-1948) and Stefan Kempisty (1892-1940), both from the Warsaw polytechnic. The three men secured satisfactory level of studies but only the arrival of Antoni Zygmund (1900-1992) in 1930 and his briliant student Józef Marcinkiewicz (1910-1940) changed the picture by adding a high level research. Kaunas offered a chair to a German mathematician Otto Volk (1881-1989) who worked there 1923-1930, offered good teaching and secured further development. Although following different roots, all three universities succeeded and the article offers some insight into their specific stories.

The manuscript concerns the analysis of the ground temperature in Poznań in the years 2011–2020. Data generally available on the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB) website were used. The ground temperature was measured at five depths: 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm and 100 cm. The highest variability of ground temperature occurred in summer and the lowest in winter. The ground temperature was closely correlated mainly with air temperature, but also with insolation and water vapour deficit. There is a statistical increase in the air temperature in Poznań – the trends at the whole soil profile are positive although not statistically significant.

Opis:
A succession of stacked paleosol profiles was recognized in open pits in the western Wielkopolska region (Poland). Field observations and micromorphological studies made it possible to distinguish the following pedostructures, formed in contrasting environments: soil horizons, crystallaria, concretions, redoximorphic structures, Fe-Mn globulae and slickensides. In both soils (Holocene) and paleosols (Pleistocene or/and Pliocene?), surface horizons are present (horizon A), marked by rhizocretions. There are two separate carbonate soils. One of them contains calcite concretions and gypsum pedofeatures, presumably formed in arid or semi-arid conditions. Two of the soil profiles are probably truncated, and only subsurface horizons are present (horizon B). In some cases, paleosols are separated by sediment layers slightly influenced by pedogenesis (horizon BC). Carbonate soils (Bk) indicate water deficit during their formation. The presence of horizons with slickensides (Bss) indicates intervals with contrasting seasonal climates (wet and dry cycles). The profiles were influenced by gleying processes which caused redistribution of iron oxides and formation of iron and iron-manganese concretions. The pedostructures recognised reflect different climatic conditions as well as humidity changes during the time of their formation.

The article tells about historiography of a famous Polish school – Collegium Lubranscianum (English Lubrański Academy), which originated in 1519 and existed until 1780. The whole text divided into few groups, showing the position of Lubranscianum in the interpretations of historians and the lack of research allowing recognition of some aspects of Lubranscianum history, such as the educational process of young people in the school, including the methods and handbooks, or, in general, the history of the school in the seventieth and eighteenth century. It is stressed that only few works bring new knowledge into out problem and most of the historiography is based on previously published works.

In this paper, we discuss the presence of community gardens in urban spaces and the types of activities performed there, using the city of Poznań as a case study. First, based on interviews with representatives of selected non-governmental organisations, analyses of available Internet sources as well as our own field research, cartographic and photographic documentation, we identify community gardens in the space of the city and explore their formation process. In the course of our study we also concentrate on the type of garden location. In addition, we devote our attention to the gardens which have disappeared from the fabric of the city. Our study reveals that community gardens currently operating in Poznań are established in non-central locations. These gardens are scattered in various parts of the city. Only in the Łazarz district there are two community gardens. Most frequently, community gardens are established on plots between old blocks of flats and tenement houses. Two gardens are located on underdeveloped greenery near the Warta River and in two city parks. A detailed examination of the events held in the community gardens in the Łazarz district in the years 2014–2017 shows that they had a very diversified character. Both of them turned out to be multifunctional, i.e. hosted meetings devoted to agriculture and horticulture, environmental education, artistic events, DIY and recreation. However, the percentage of events in the structure of the meetings organised in the gardens differed considerably.

Opis:
The urbanisation and suburbanisation processes are considered to have a detrimental impact on the environment. Increasing the share of the impervious surfaces is one of their main negative effects, particularly in and near the cities, affecting the water relations of basins. It also results in new catchment boundaries formation and, in many cases, changes in the physiographic parameters affecting the accuracy of hydrological and hydraulic calculations of small suburban catchments. This study is an attempt to delimit the catchment boundaries located in the suburban area of Poznań city, Poland, in three variants: according to the Raster Hydrographical Map of Poland and Raster Topographical Map of Poland, digital elevation model, and rainwater sewage system. The analyses were conducted with ArcGIS software, and the results were additionally verified with geodesic measurements on site. This work focuses mainly on the impact of anthropogenic pressure on the catchment shape and the course of its boundaries. The analyses were conducted on the Rów WB stream catchment located in the Skórzewo village, Dopiewo municipality, which stands out within the Poznań Metropolitan Area as the area where the suburbanisation process is the most intensified. This study proved that the agrotechnical and drainage works performed in undeveloped, agricultural areas affected catchment shape and size as much as suburbanisation itself. According to the authors, the suburban catchment boundaries should be regularly updated due to the intensity of the new investments development and additionally verified on site.

Opis:
This essay examines the work of the Polish freedom fighters in the revolution in southwest German Baden in 1848/49 by identifying the personal connections between the uprisings in Baden and Poznań and identifying Prussia as a common enemy. In particular, the role of the Polish military officer Ludwik Mierosławski as general of the Baden troops is honoured. The goal is thus to determine the exact contribution of Polish fighters in the Baden Revolution and how they interacted with the Baden revolutionaries. Thus, the essay also sheds light on the help of Baden for the Polish fight for freedom in the form of so-called Polish associations. For this purpose, the essay presents the eyewitness accounts of the year 1849 from the perspective of Baden and Polish participants. Methodologically, the article extracts the specific events in Baden and Poznań from the general revolutionary history of the years 1848/49. Chronologically, the essay also looks back at prehistory up to 1815 and offers a look at the life of the revolutionaries after 1849. The events in Baden and Poznań are finally placed in a larger context, especially in the context of the European freedom movements, the international cooperation of the revolutionaries, and Polandʼs striving for independence.

Opis:
The article describes the problem of revitalization in a central and eastern European context as an element of the picture of social change. The article recapitulates the social and the spatial experiment which started in 2005 when one of the first processes of revitalization in Poland began. The idea of the revitalization was anchored in two places. The first was the socially rooted idea of the participation of inhabitants in urban planning, based on East German experiences (support in the original context by low dedicated particularly for revitalization processes). The second was that of improving the “touristic portfolio” of the city rooted in the multicultural history of the place, and the local identity. Actions which mainly relate to communication, cultural and social initiatives turned on processes which the author called “unsuccessful gentrification.” The article attempts to identify what happened and why it happened. The investigation is based on the quantitative data from the social survey (researchers asked mostly inhabitants of the revitalized area questions), and qualitative in-depth interviews. The contextual data was taken from urban observation, the local real estate market, and public statistics.

It is only fourteenth- and fifteenth-century sources that help build an image of the functioning of the rabbinate in Jewish religious communities of medieval Poland. Latin Christian sources dating to the period mention individuals described as doctor scholae, senior scholae, or episcopus Iudaeorum (standing for the rabbi or the major senior). However, mentions referring to such persons usually only deal with their lending activities. Still, we can learn more about the rabbis active in Poznań in the middle of the fifteenth century thanks to the correspondence (responsa) of Israel Isserlein, Israel Bruna, and Moses Minz, all of whom were scholars active in the Empire.

Most of articles on patronage in Greater Poland from the 16th to the 18th century concerns a direct dependence between the patron and the client. Thus, the present work concentrates on a specific kind of patronage – scholarship foundations, which are only briefly mentioned in historiography. Some of them are not known. “Fundatio orzelkoviana” serves as an example here to show the need for detailed relevant case studies to supplement the available data. Founded by Marcin Orzeł in 1566, the foundation existed for many years and helped young people to achieve academic education. Ius patronatus and control of the foundation was assigned to the Catedral Chapter of Poznań. Admittedly, this Chapter was interested in keeping the foundation in good condition, e. g. by being aware of economic and financial factors influencing the foundation and by carrying out the recovery in debts, be it rents or fees. The source material for the present discussion comes from the Main Archive for Poznań Archdiocese (mainly the acts of the Cathedral Chapter of Poznań, Consistory Court and the canonical visitation of Bishop Tholibowski).
