Opis:
The aim of the article is to show the Polish-Brazilian evolution of bilingualism throughout ages. his paper shows different definitions and types of bilingualism, taking into consideration a comparison between the Polish and Portuguese language. Furthermore, I present a review of 150 years of Polish citizens’ history in Brazil. It presents their difficulties and the approach of the Brazilian government from the 19th to the 20th century. The most significant  subject are Polish schools and organizations. Their history shows how the command of Polish and Portuguese changed throughout ages. There were different conditions, affecting the command of languages in the Polish Diaspora, such as the familial approach or access to Polish culture. I also mention which organizations and people had the biggest impact on Polish citizens in Brazil. I also describe the existing attitude to both cultures and languages in Polish communities. Apart from that, I try to understand the identity and acquaintance of Polish culture nowadays and show actions as a resultof which Polish language and history are promoted nowadays.

Opis:
This paper examines the vowel system of present day Malacca Portuguese Creole (MPC) or Kristang, based on recordings from interviews with five female native speakers of MPC. A total of 1083 monophthongs were extracted from the recordings. The first and second formants of these vowels were measured and analysed. Considerable variation was found within and between the speakers in the way each of the vowels was produced. There were also noticeable overlaps between /i/ and /e/ suggesting that they were being used interchangeably. The quality of some of the vowels found in this study was also found to be different from those previously described. Based on the reduced vowel inventory, the variation in the way that vowels are produced, and the overlaps between vowels, the findings suggest the possibility of phonological instability of this endangered language.

Opis:
This article discusses literary performatives and their functions in The History of the Siege of Lisbon by José Saramago through the prism of the definition of literary performatives presented by Irene Kacandes in her article “Are You in the Text? The ‘Literary Performative’ in Postmodernist Fiction”. In order to understand Saramago’s novel in the light of this concept, this work examines the novel in terms of features emblematic of second-person narratives. The point of departure is J. L. Austin’s Speech Act Theory from How to Do Things with Words. The article refers to the theoretical and methodological background regarding Speech Act Theory as proposed by Austin and developed by Searle, as well as further considerations on the application of the theory in literary studies. It demonstrates that literary performatives present in the novel being discussed are built by third-person singular imperatives, first-person plurals (imperative and indicative mode) and impersonal forms. Moreover, it argues that they serve the following functions—constituting the second-person narrative character of the novel, providing the narrative with oral and metafictional character, and pointing the reader to the moment of action they are involved in at the moment of reading.

We will question the appropriation of a place of worship by various migration communities from the working-class town of Rosières, especially by Polish and Portuguese people. Located in central France, the town was built, in a paternalistic move by a factory of the same name during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. All the buildings were built on the initiative of the factory’s successive administrations. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the administration started hiring immigrants (first from Poland, then from Portugal and postcolonial countries). By studying the process which led the factory’s management to sell the church to the municipality between 1999 and 2003, we shall observe, on the one hand, the shift of the church’s status in the townspeople’s representations (from a religious symbol to a social one) and, on the other hand, that the mobilization ending with the sale was instigated by those professing Polish ancestry.

The purpose of this article is to outline Portuguese syllable structure. The shape of the syllable in European Portuguese (the standard southern and central dialect) is suggested to be identical in slow and fast speech (Mateus – d’Andrade 2002). This view is challenged in this article by an analysis of Vowel Deletion and Vowel Nasalisation. It is argued that within the skeletal theory of the syllable, it is impossible to maintain the same syllabic structure for slow speech and fast speech.

This article argues that the concept of ‘captured media’ is invaluable to a deeper understanding of the roles performed by media systems throughout European liberalism and early democratization of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This case-study explores the structures of the media system during Portuguese Liberalism (1820–1926) in the scope of the Portuguese empire. The concept of the ‘Imperial Public Sphere’ is applied to show how imperial and colonial elites captured the media system to exercise and spread its political and ideological power. As a methodological approach to analyze the roles performed by press, the case-study relies on the model developed by Hallin and Mancini (2004), which is applied to three empirical cases. The use of the concept ‘captured media’ in the field of media history is a contribution to understanding the political roots of the press during colonialism and its legacy to contemporary media systems in Lusophone countries.

This paper is about the process of learning/teaching philosophy in a class of deaf stu-dents. It starts with a presentation of Portuguese Sign Language that, as with other sign lan-guages, is recognized as a language on equal terms with vocal languages. However, in spite of the recognition of that identity, sign languages have specifi city related to the quadrimodal way of their production, and iconicity is an exclusive quality. Next, it will be argued that according to linguistic relativism - even in its weak version - language is a mould of thought. The idea of Philosophy is then discussed as an area of knowledge in which the author and the language of its production are always present. Finally, it is argued that learning/teaching Philosophy in Sign Language in a class of deaf students is linked to deaf culture and it is not merely a way of overcoming diffi culties with the spoken language

Bullfighting is increasingly seen as a contested practice in Portugal. The Portuguese public generally disapproves of the practice and the Portuguese animal rights movement has dedicated a significant number of their campaigns to protesting against it. Despite this opposition to the practice, however, there is still legal protection of the practice on grounds of preserving it as a national tradition. This contestation and legality has led bullfighting supporters to actively try to defend and rationalize the practice. This paper analyses this defence and rationalization by exploring a case study of the quasi-lobbyist Portuguese organization, Prótoiro. The aforementioned case study is analyzed through the use of critical discourse analysis and neutralization theory. The conclusion reached in this article is that the analysis of speech reveals that Prótoiro and its supporters try to morally disengage with the harm done to the bull by using justifications that bullfighting is an ethical activity.

Wine is a well-known product and is part of human heritage and culture. However, studies indicate that many consumers do not understand the terminology used by wine experts. To understand if and how this applies to European Portuguese (EP), we asked two questions: (i) are non-experts aware of what certain wine descriptors mean when they read them on labels or in magazines?; (ii) what is the degree of proximity of non-expert definitions to expert definitions? We surveyed a group of speakers. Firstly, we asked for: “Define, in your own words, what you understand by [insert wine descriptor].” to see how informants defined in their own words what they understood by a given wine descriptor in a specific context related to wine. Secondly, we searched for the exact wine descriptor in specialized reference works and compiled the definitions presented in those works. The results of this sample allowed us to answer our questions with interesting facts about EP reality and what the non-expert consumer understand about wine descriptors, while providing us with clues to improve definitions in resources design to help non-expert consumers to better understand the wine domain and experts to express more clearly what they what to convey.

Macroeconomic factors impact both the stock markets and society. However, one generic research question remains unanswered: Do all macroeconomic factors impact all markets and all countries with the same strength? This study aims to contribute to the perception of how macroeconomic factors impact the Portuguese Stock Market. It also considers how the Portuguese Stock Market reacts to various factors compared to the North American and Japanese Stock Markets, focusing on the last decade. Using GARCH Models, the results document that the Portuguese Stock Market suffers significant impacts from the EUR-USD exchange rate. In turn, oil and gold prices also have a significant influence. The Japanese market, at first sight, looks more resilient to outside events, but it is also sensitive to gold price fluctuations and the EUR-JPY exchange rate. The North American market especially feels pressure from exchange rates from both the EUR and JPY and Brent.

The effect of chemical modification on mechano-sorptive creep in bending was studied by experimental work. Stakes with 20 × 20 × 400 mm RTL of Portuguese wood species (Pinus pinaster Aiton) modified with 1,3-dimethylol-4,5- dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU), m-methylated melamine resin (MMF), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and amid wax (WA) were measured under asymmetric moistening conditions over a period of 42 days (app. 1000 hours) with stress level (SL) of 12 MPa, according to ENV 1156. The cell wall treatments (DMDHEU and MMF resins) had shown significant reduction of creep (creep factors, kc) when compared to untreated wood under similar conditions. Both types of resins and levels of treatments (different WPG) did not shown significant effects. In the lumen fill treatments, deposit material of TEOS did not affected the creep behaviour (kc); Wax treatment was shown a particular compliance of creep due to avoid exchange moisture (by the hydrophobic effect of wax). The anti-creep efficiency (ACE) correlated better than other mechanical or physical properties imparted by the modification process.

For a decade, from 1964 to 1974, the Portuguese Navy planned, organised and conducted low-intensity counterguerrilla activities on Lake Niassa (Nyasa, Malawi). It was one of the theatres of confrontation with the anti-colonial liberation movement. The Portuguese maintained a lasting advantage on Lake Niassa. This fact significantly hindered the use of shipping lanes to transfer guerrillas to Southern Mozambique. In operational, tactical and logistical terms, operations on Lake Niassa are an example of the flexibility of the navy and its ability to face a wide variety of challenges. At the same time, the Portuguese demonstrated considerable organisational skills, as well as the ability to improvise effectively and manage in a rational way very limited resources. The article was based on Portuguese documents, studies and reports, as well as studies in English.

The Portuguese Naval Academy is a military school with an university status and is equipped with one modern navigation and maneuvering simulator. The Navigation Simulator (NAVSIM) plays an essential role in the academic training for the Naval Academy and for its cadets, that are using this capacity since their first academic year as a learning tool. Identifying the non-technical skills that could be trained and focusing on the specific training of the technical skills is paramount, in order to maximize the training sessions for each cadet’s year. The assessment of statistical data referring to the last 6 years is important to identify where there are gaps in the exercises, as well as how the midshipman are prepared to perform functions of watch keeping on the ships fleet.

Despite the adoption of crew resource management training for bridge teams over the last decades, the training is still heavily focussed on technical achievements. In an educational context, the situation is more problematical, since with requirement of developing the technical skills, there is a need to build and evaluate the non-technical skills of cadets with little experience in bridge team management. In parallel with the application of team leadership models, the Portuguese Naval Academy conducted a research to improve the development and assessment of non-technical skills in bridge simulators. This paper describes the method used to identify the key non-technical skills required for naval cadets and to develop a behavioural marker system for their measurement. A literature review of behavioural marker systems was supplemented with an analysis of interviews conducted with students and simulator instructors. Additionally, further analysis of Portuguese Navy accidents reports was made, applying the HFACS framework to identify the relevant non-technical skills involved in the accidents. The resulting rating system covers five skill categories (leadership, situational awareness, communication, team work and decision making), each one with three rating elements. The framework is currently under evaluation tests in bridge simulators sessions, within an educational context.
