Opis:
The present work is devoted to the analysis of electric energy production in photovoltaic power plant located in eastern part of Poland and to the estimation of pollution avoided due to the use of solar radiation energy. Photovoltaic power plant consists mainly of silicon polycrystalline modules but in its experimental part thin film modules of three different technologies are also installed giving the total power of 1.4 MWp. In 2015 the PV plant produced above 1.5 MWh of electric energy. Benefits of renewable energy use result in a significant reduction of emissions that are harmful to people and other living species too.

We present a comprehensive case study to identify the best vessel-specific inventory family that predicts the primary emissions from an ocean-going vessel when at berth, while maneuvering and while cruising. The main purpose of the paper is to generalize the implication of the case study by advising a novel policy, which will allow different authorities to estimate the shipping emissions in a cost-effective and reliable way. The emissions rates of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and particulate matter from the main engine and from the auxiliary engines are measured for different modes of ship operations in an on-board experiment campaign. The measured total emission amounts were predicted with 13 families of emission inventories and prediction deviations have been calculated. A procedure was advised for estimating the prediction inventory deviations of the combined hourly emission amounts from the main engine plus the auxiliary engines. Each inventory family has been formalized as a six-dimensional vector of prediction deviations for any mode of operation. The best vessel-specific inventory families were identified using the minimal mean absolute deviation criteria. A more rational procedure to rank inventories is considered, which treats the missing value problem and constructs a six-attribute value function. The use of preferential analysis and value functions further clarifies the recommended choice of inventory method. In this case study we demonstrated that the most suitable inventory families will provide reliable predictions with acceptable deviations from the measured emissions. At berth and for maneuvering, the best inventory family turned out to be MOPSEA (with 32.2 % and 39.6 % mean absolute deviations respectively). For cruising, the most precise inventory family is MEET (with 59.2% mean absolute deviation), whereas MOPSEA being the third best. However, some of the other inventories produce unacceptably high deviation, well above 100%. The practical implication is that while inventory methods can produce precise and cost-effective predictions, they should never be used without experimental verification. That is why, we provide an algorithm to use on-board experimental measurements to identify the best vessel-specific inventory family, which predicts the primary emission of a ship at a given mode of operation. The proposed algorithm and the implications of the case study are utilized to motivate a proposal for a novel future policy for a cost-effective and reliable emission estimation from shipping.

Opis:
The issue of environment protection has gained in importance recently in connection with progressive environmental decay, which is caused by a steady economic development and exploitative natural resource management. Energetics is one of the industries, which have a damaging influence on the environment, especially in the matter of air quality. Polish energetics is based on carbon-intensive fuels due to big coal reserves commanded by the country. Coal burning leads to air pollution emission of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter. Modernizations of power installations are one of the ways towards realization of sustainable development principles. The article is devoted to modernizations implemented in the Heating Plant ‘Piast’ based in Bieruń, Poland. The investments embraced modernizations of the heating boilers and gas-cleaning plants, which constitute the IPPC installations. The author presents research results concerning the influence of conducted modernizations on the amounts of air pollution emissions.

The fight against global warming and Earth atmosphere pollution has been for years one of the most important tasks of governments and national economies of the European Union members. Abandonment of efforts leading to reduction mainly of carbon dioxide emission by heavy industry, electric power generation based on coal, passenger aviation and wheeled passenger transport will inevitably be leading to deterioration of health condition of our citizens. This article presents an overview of commonly used structural and technological treatments which have impact on reduction of toxic standardized exhaust pollutants in the surface transport, exemplified on SW 400 engine version of L2 / 3 and its turbocharged version 6CT 107 2/L2. The impact of: engine's adjustment parameters, catalytic afterburners, exhaust gas recirculation, modifications of injectors, turbochargers, supercharging air-cooling and particulates filter on carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulates emission was thoroughly examined. The parameters being compared were the results of toxicity tests according to ECE-R49 Regulation and a maximal smoke values on full-load characteristics. In conclusion, of the paper the limiting allowable values of toxic components emitted in Diesel engines exhaust gases in the following EU Emission Standards are presented.

Excessive concentrations of smog toxicants constitute a critical factor influencing the health quality of inhabitants of urban agglomerations. The exposure to elevated concentrations of suspended particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) is associated with an increase of adverse health effects. Prolonged exposure to air pollution, especially from low emission, may be linked not only to a greater risk of developing cancer of the respiratory system, or cardiovascular morbidity but also to the increased frequency of admissions to hospitals and emergency units as well as medical consultations in surgeries and outpatient clinics. The issue was investigated using the city of Cracow as an example. Attempts were made to find the connection between air pollution in the city of Cracow and the frequency of hospitalization and medical consultations of patients (registered in the city) due to lung and bronchial malignancy and cardiac dysrhythmia taking into account the data from the years 2010-2016 submitted by the Malopolska Regional Branch of the National Health Fund.

Opis:
Central Europe is the region with the highest concentration of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometers (PM10) in outdoor air. Weather conditions combined with a high industrialization of regions laying along the Czech Republic and Poland border influence the formation of long smog episodes with PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere at the value of several hundred micrograms in a cubic meter. However, it has been observed that the main source of particulates pollution in the area of the Polish-Czech border between the most populated areas of Ostrava and Katowice is the residential heating fired with solid fuels, participating at the level of not less than 21% in overall air contamination with dusts. It particularly concerns PM10, which is one of the major harmful air pollutants produced by the combustion of solid fuels such as biomass and coal. The measures leading to decrease the dust emission from coal burned individual heat sources include methods to eliminate old-type boilers not permitted by the law, as well as illegal incineration of fuels of bad quality or including admixture of wastes. It requires a new approach for effective identification of such sources, as well as for recognition of pollutants leaving household emitters and evaluation of their share in overall effect on human health. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with miniaturized sensors detecting gaseous and dust particles at the outlet of an individual emitter can compensate the lack of information unable to be obtain using traditional measurements. The use of UAVs to identify specific sources of air pollution is still at an early stage of development and there are not too many scientific publications on this topic so far. Despite it, this technology seems to be usable to create undemanding, low-cost and effective method of air pollution sources assessment. In the current article, some aspects of using UAVs for identification of especially troublesome emission sources located on residential areas are presented, including finding the dominant emission source, determining the optimal distance between a UAV and the emission source or the influence of the UAV altitude, movement and sampling time on measurement result.

Opis:
Polluted air is dangerous to human life and health. Particulate matter, among others PM10, is one of the most harmful substances. In Małopolska and its capital Kraków, the concentrations of harmful substances often exceed the standards set by the World Health Organization. Kraków, thanks to the ban on residential heating with solid fuels, has significantly reduced emissions of pollution, but they remain high in the remaining part of the region, affecting air quality in the capital as well. With the frequent occurrence of high concentrations of pollutants, in addition to the necessary measures aimed at reducing emissions, forecasting of air pollutant concentrations is needed to inform the population if normative concentrations are likely to be exceeded. The FAPPS (Forecasting of Air Pollution Propagation System), based on the AROME/MM5/CALMET/ CALPUFF model ensemble, has been operating in Małopolska since 2014 and has been used to create pollution concentration forecasts for Kraków and Małopolska. In this study, the influence of emissions from point sources on air quality in Małopolska was investigated based on the results of modelling with this system. Modelling results indicate that this influence is negligible. The quality of PM10 forecasts for four versions of the FAPPS system, differing in the meteorological model used – MM5 (Fifth-Generation Penn State/NCAR Mesoscale Model) or WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) and the emission input (2015 emissions from the Małopolska Marshal’s Office, updated with data from the City of Kraków for 2018, or the 2020 emission inventory from the Central Emission Database) was tested. The quality of forecasts was assessed based on the results of measurements at the 22 air pollution monitoring stations for three smog episodes that occurred on 11–17.11.2021, 11–15.12.2021 and 13–18.03.2022. The best results for Kraków were obtained using an approach based on the WRF model and the emission inventory from the Central Emission Database, for which an RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) value of 30.02 µg/m3 was obtained for selected episodes. In the case of Małopolska, the lowest RMSE value (33.58 µg/m3 ) was obtained for the system using the emission inventory obtained from the Marshal’s Office and the WRF model. First tests indicate that changing the meteorological model from MM5 to WRF can lead to improved modelling results, but further research is needed to confirm it.
Zanieczyszczone powietrze jest niebezpieczne dla ludzkiego życia i zdrowia. Pyły zawieszone, wśród nich PM10, to jedne z najbardziej szkodliwych substancji.

This article aims to present the state of air quality treated as a measure of the state of quality of local environmental safety, based on the research conducted in the town of Barlinek. This information is necessary to identify the areas that require action to improve air quality (to reduce the concentration of pollutants). The main factors that inspired the author to address this issue are, first of all, the continuous high level of air pollution, despite the actions taken to reduce it; secondly, the lack of precise, clear indicators and measures of such deprivation that applies to a major part of the territory of Poland that would take into account the individual national context; thirdly, the need to identify the main factors that determine this phenomenon in the specific context of Poland. Other factors include the need to consider the requirement for Poland as a member state of the EU to participate in reducing air pollution to an appropriate extent; and, finally, the need to develop and implement integrated 10-year National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP) for the years 2021–2030 with a long-term perspective to the year 2050, as well as long-term renovation strategies to improve the accuracy of eliminating air pollution. The research problem focuses on three issues: presenting the current national and European criteria of ecological safety for air pollution, identifying the indicators and measures that enable the determination of air pollution levels, and presenting the local air pollution level based on the selected example. The research problem discussed in the article is empirical. Analytical/synthetic, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to provide a more in-depth analysis of the problem, and conclusions were drawn.

Increasing the use of geothermal energy may be one of the tools bringing us closer to achieving the European Commission’s objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Air quality improvement plays a strategic role in achieving sustainable energy development. Both European and national legislation in this field is particularly comprehensive and effective, establishing rules for monitoring and preventing air pollution in order to avoid adverse effects on human health and the environment. Unfortunately, the effective air pollutions monitoring network currently in place in Poland, with 156 monitoring stations, mainly concerns agglomerations and cities with over 100,000 inhabitants. The lack of information on the state of pollution in smaller towns is a significant limitation in terms of research aimed at assessing the effects of corrective measures taken, such as the possible transformation of district heating systems based on RES, including the use of deep geothermal energy. This paper proposes some solutions which allow the effective estimation of air conditions in locations not covered by environmental monitoring, in the context of the potential to develop geothermal resources in the rich geothermal province of Central Poland.

Opis:
Although perceived as the most environmentally friendly means of transport, ships are a significant source of pollution to the environment. The vast majority of emissions in EU sea areas are emitted from cargo ships over 500 GT. About 45% of all emissions come from EU flagged ships and approximately 20% of emissions are emitted within the 12-mile limit of territorial seas. In port cities, ship emissions are in many cases a dominant source of pollution and need to be addressed when considering compliance with legally binding air quality objectives. Moreover, emissions from ships travel over hundreds of kilometres and can thus contribute to air quality problems on land even if they are emitted at sea. This is particularly relevant for the deposition of sulphur and nitrogen compounds, which cause acidification of natural ecosystems and threaten biodiversity through excessive nitrogen inputs. Emission of toxic compounds in marine engines exhausts is limited by international legal provisions, namely MARPOL convention, which in Annex VI sets limits to SOx and NOx emissions and designates special areas where the limits are stringent. To comply with the provisions, marine vessels need to be equipped with installations reducing emissions to permissible levels or turn to alternative fuels. The paper presents evaluation of impact of those having been in force for the last decade limitations as well as of applied new technological solutions on improvement of air quality. The analysis was conducted for the Baltic Sea, based on available data on ship traffic in the area and emission factors.

The paper addresses the problem of real-time emission control in a given set of air pollution sources. The approach applied utilizes the optimal control technique for distributed parameter systems. A set of pointwise emission sources with a predefined location and emission characteristics is considered as the controlled object. The problem is formulated as on-line minimization of an environmental cost function, by the respective modification of emission level in the controlled sources, according to the changing meteorological conditions (e.g. wind direction and velocity). Dispersion of atmospheric pollution is governed by a multi-layer, dynamic model of SOχ transport, which is the main forecasting tool used in the optimization algorithm. The objective function includes the environmental damage related to air quality as well as the cost of the controlling action. The environmental cost index depends on the current level of SOχ concentration and on the sensitivity of the area to this type of air pollution. The adjoint variable; related to the main transport equation of the forecasting model, is applied to calculate the gradient of the objective function in the main optimization procedure. The test computations have been performed for a set of major power plants in the industrial region of Upper Silesia (Poland).

This paper analyzes the air pollutant emissions in the last four years (2018–2021) in the Upper Silesian Region, which has one of the worst air qualities in Poland and in Europe in general, and the emissions in the Lublin Region in eastern Poland, which is considered as a clean region. In each of the above-mentioned regions, the areas with the highest air pollutant emissions were specified i.e. the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and the Lublin Agglomeration. The emission data for the following pollutants: particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have been compared. The obtained results were also compared with the estimated average emissions in Poland. It was indicated that in both agglomerations the exposure to air pollutants was on similar levels, which were several times higher than in the remaining parts of the considered regions and the average values for Poland in general. In the Silesian Agglomeration, the exposure to PM10 was over 5 times higher than the average national exposure. The exposure to PM2.5 was almost 6 times higher, the exposure to BaP was about 5 times higher, while the exposure to SOx and NOx was 16 and 10 times higher than the national average, respectively. This is reflected in the increased number of premature deaths and the number of years of life lost due to the exposure to air pollution. Therefore, the actions aimed at limiting air pollutant emissions are urgent in the above-indicated areas.

Opis:
The environmental legislation in Ukraine is changing rapidly. These changes are related to the adaptation of Ukrainian laws to the requirements of the European Union. In this regard, the paper considers the unintentional production of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Odessa Industrial-and-Urban Agglomeration (next – Odessa agglomeration) in the context of new regulatory and legal requirements of Ukraine. In many countries around the world, the issue of pollution of environmental components by POPs has a large focus, because POPs pose a global threat to the environment and human health. The work aims to assess the main sources of unintentional production of POPs in the Odessa agglomeration during one year (2017), taking into account the new territorial features of the Odessa agglomeration. For the first time for Odessa agglomeration, the mass of POPs formed by main sources using the newest European methodological approach was calculated, sources of unintentional production of POPs on volumes of these substances were ranked, and their total mass of generation on the territory of Odessa agglomeration was calculated. The number of POPs molecules equivalent to 2,3,7,8-TСDD, which infiltrate into the air basin of the Odessa agglomeration, hence into the organisms of the agglomeration inhabitants, was calculated. The obtained results were compared with the allowable number per capita of the agglomeration, the relevant conclusions were drawn. Priority sources of unintentional production of POPs were identified, which allows taking appropriate preventive measures to reduce the scale of their generation.
