Opis:
This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

Opis:
The article discusses the question of how Nordic literature in translation – as reflected in Polish literary reviews – creates Norden as a place. What kind of imagery (constructed in a continuous discursive process) is projected on the Nordic region, and what purposes does this construction serve? The analysis draws on an understanding of place as a construct based on “body, landscape and culture” (Ringgaard & DuBois 2017:20) and uses concepts taken from imagology and literary reception studies.

Opis:
The figure of the first Roman emperor in many ways had an impact on the Polish culture, especially in historiography and literature. In my paper I focus on some issues connected with the subject. I discuss the ideas presented by Tadeusz Zieliński, one of the most eminent researchers of the ancient world in Europe in the first part of 20th century. He devoted a significant part of his opus to present his own vision of Augustus seen as a reformer of the Roman state religion. Zieliński built the emperor’s image as the saviour of the Roman world in the face of „the end of times”. This term played significant role in Zieliński’s thinking about Roman history at the end of the Republic. For the Polish scholar celebration of the secular game in 17 BC was the final task done by Augustus. This task Zieliński defined as the sacred mission and connected with the figure of Sibyl and the impact of the Etruscan theory of saeculum. For Zieliński, Augustus belonged to the most important men of providence in Roman history. In the same way I discuss the ideas presented by Ludwik Piotrowicz and Mieczysław St. Popławski. Both scholars analised the question of imperial cult in depth. Popławski expressed original view on Augustus apotheosis seen as the development of imperial cult in transcendental perspective. Piotrowicz instead saw this problem as a purely political phenomenon. Last part of my paper is devoted to short resentation of the echos of Augustus’ bimillenium in Polish scholar activity.

Krzysztof Kieślowski is a cult figure among Russian moviegoers, but “proving” this is not as easy as in the case of the popularity of other Polish classic names in Russia, such as Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi. Placing Kieślowski on the list of Polish filmmakers who have influenced Russian culture in this or some other way is a not obvious move. The article is an attempt at exposing the reader to the presence of the director’s films in Russia through the history of the distribution of his films, an analysis of reviews by Russian authors and texts in which Kieślowski’s name appears. It also discusses references to his films in works by other filmmakers. It is complemented by the statements of two Russian directors who talk about the importance of Kieślowski in their work and academic practice.

The aim of the study was to determine the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) for young persons with normal hearing. The following three tests available for Polish language were used: the New Articulation Lists (NAL-93) version of 2011, the Polish Sentence Test (PST) and the Polish Sentence Matrix Test (PSMT). When using PST and PSMT the masking signal was babule noise made of the language material contained in the test. For NAL-93 the masking signal was speech noise. The speech reception threshold (SRT) was found to be (−6:8 ± 1.1), (−4:8 ± 1.6), (−3:5 ± 1.8) and (−3:4 ± 2.0) dB SNR for PST, PSMT, NAL-93 (constant stimuli method) and NAL-93 (short method), respectively. The values of SRT depend on semantic redundancy of the language material. Differences in SRT were statistically non-significant only for NAL-93 (constant stimuli method) and NAL-93 (short method). Moreover, it was shown that the time needed for presentation of a single word list (NAL-93, short method) or single sentence list (PST, PSMT) was comparable and equal to 2-3 minutes. The most uniform SRT values were obtained for PST. The PSMT was the least demanding for the listener, experimenter and equipment.

The central interest of the paper is concentrated on an online production of Henry V in 2020. The project is based on a new Polish translation by Piotr Kamiński and produced by Dariusz Rosiak, a journalist, as one of his regular Reports on the Condition of the World published on YouTube. Realised as a reading performance by three actors in front of an empty row of chairs, the production brings an innovative and revealing interpretation of the play, breaking new ground in the Polish reception of Shakespeare’s histories. The paper offers a brief review of the presence of history plays in Polish reception and introductory information on Rosiak’s YouTube channel and Kamiński’s translation as a background to a critical analysis of the production and its relevance to the here and now of our world.

The article raises the topic of the evolving image of Venice from the perspectives of three travel accounts: by Vittorio Alfieri, Fryderyk August Moszyński, and Stanisław Dunin-Borkowski. They were all bound by the figure of the Italian playwright Alfieri. In the article, I propose a new look into the accounts from the travels of Polish intellectual elite: an enlightened journey described in the recollections by Moszyński, and a 19th-century journey depicted in the journals by Borkowski, following Alfieri as the guide. Considering his tragedies in support of national liberation, he perfectly matched the ideas in the minds of Polish artists at the turn of the 19th century. Even though the author may be forgotten today, the reception of his works, depending on the historical period, political situation, and literary streams, evolved interchangeably placing him in the spotlight and ignoring him. In the first half of the 19th century, he was a significant figure, a fact which triggers interesting observations, particularly in the context of the journeys of artists to Venice.

The article is a review of Another Canon: The Polish Nineteenth-Century Novel in World Context, edited by Grażyna Borkowska and Lidia Wiśniewska, published in 2020 by Lit Verlag, Switzerland within the Polonistik im Kontext series. The first part of the monograph includes articles that provide a reinterpretation of selected novels (including Krasicki’s The Adventures of Mr. Nickolas Wisdom, Orzeszkowa’s On the Niemen, and Sienkiewicz’s Without Dogma) in relation to the main currents of world literature. The second part focuses on the reception of selected nineteenth-century Polish novels in Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, France, Spain, the United States, and Great Britain. The publication is aimed at raising the interest of non-Polish recipients in the nineteenth-century novels during a period when twentieth and contemporary Polish literature has already gained relative popularity abroad.
Pierwsza część zawiera współczesne analizy wybranych powieści (m.in. Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki Ignacego Krasickiego, Nad Niemnem Elizy Orzeszkowej i Bez dogmatu Henryka Sienkiewicza) prowadzone w kontekście współistniejących nurtów literatury światowej. Artykuły zawarte w części drugiej dotyczą recepcji wybranych powieści w takich krajach, jak Białoruś, Bułgaria, Gruzja, Rosja, Hiszpania, Francja, Wielka Brytania i Stany Zjednoczone. Celem monografii jest zainteresowanie obcojęzycznych literaturoznawców polską powieścią dziewiętnastowieczną, w czasach, gdy dwudziestowieczna i współczesna literatura polska zyskała już za granicą znaczącą popularność.

The following paper explores the specificity of female images with regard to the peculiarities of their formation in European poetry of the Baroque period on the examples of Ivan Velychkovsky’s works. The oeuvre of this striking representative of seventeenth-century Ukrainian literature is compared with the verses of the Polish-language author Danylo Bratkovsky as well as English Baroque epigrams by Robert Herrick and verses by Andrew Marvell. Comparison of poetic specimens belonging to different linguistic and cultural spaces is possible because, in spite of the different local mentality, all the above-mentioned poets are carriers of the common Baroque worldview formed on the basis of the Holy Scripture, Christian theology, and the heritage of Greek and Roman antiquity. In the course of our research, we observed the existence of common Baroque poetry traits (regardless of the place of genesis and confessional affiliation) in the perception of women and the formation of female images. All of the mentioned poets followed the bipolarity and Baroque antithesis of women’ imagery. All of them, in one way or another, derive their judgments from the reception of the established biblical stereotypes. In view of the insufficient reflection on this issue in contemporary Ukrainian literary criticism and in order to arrive at a more comprehensive outline of female images in the seventeenth-century poetry, we use a method of comparing Ukrainian, Polish, and English samples of Baroque verses in terms of their features and traits, characteristic for the works of this period. This article proposes to create a generalised Baroque image of the woman, outlining her place in the society at that time, by comparing the works of the representatives of different local mentalities.

The pattern of education of the Polish noble youth in the seventeenth century changed in comparison with the preceding century. In the latter, the mul-tinational, multicultural and multidenominational nature of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth nurtured attitudes of widely understood tolerance both in terms of ideology and in practice. Poland was receptive to strong Re-naissance influence, while numerous sons of the Polish nobles studied abroad, mainly in Italy but also in Germany and France. The education system in the Jagiellonian monarchy of reflected the trends and the ideals of contemporary European education. The seventeenth century saw increased influence of the Counter-Reformation in the Nobles’ Commonwealth. The ideas of Sarmatism, embracing xenophobia, religiosity and self-glorification of the existing, petrified political system, became more pro-nounced. These tendencies were broadly present in the pattern of the educa-tion of nobility, a pattern that was prone to strong Jesuit influence in the spirit of the doctrine laid down by the Council of Trent.

This paper analyses Polish feature films which deal with the subject of POW camps during World War II, especially the so-called oflags (German: Offizierslager), i.e. Wehrmacht camps for officers. In Poland, nearly 200 feature films about World War II and the Nazi occupation were made in 1945–1999, with only eight raising the topic of POW camps. Eroica directed by Andrzej Munk is one of the first examples, and the best-known one. It depicts the social world of the oflags in a grotesque and ironic light, which was acclaimed by film experts but criticised by historians. The theoretical and methodological approach used in the sociology of art and in historical sociology can be invoked to analyse all the elements of the communication system: the creator, the work, and the audience in their social and historical context. The sociological analysis presented here only concerns the content of the film (the juxtaposition of “the truth of time” and “the truth of the screen”) and its social reception among different categories of viewers, each with their specific competences. The theoretical concepts developed by S. Ossowski, A. Kłoskowska, P. Francastel, E. Panofsky and P. Bourdieu are used here, alongside historical and sociological analyses of POW camps (D. Kisielewicz, A. Matuchniak-Mystkowska). The paper presents a certain research idea and describes methods that can be used to pursue it.
W artykule przeanalizowano polskie filmy fabularne poruszające tematykę obozów jenieckich w czasie II wojny światowej, zwłaszcza tzw. Oflagów (niem. Offizierslager), czyli obozów Wehrmachtu dla oficerów. W Polsce w latach 1945–1999 nakręcono blisko 200 filmów fabularnych o II wojnie światowej i okupacji hitlerowskiej, a tylko osiem poruszyło temat obozów jenieckich. Eroica w reżyserii Andrzeja Munka to jeden z pierwszych przykładów i najbardziej znany.

Opis:
This article confronts the text of A Literary Prize, a comedy by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, with its contemporary reviews. Staged by the experimental theatre Reduta (directed by Zofi a Modrzewska) in April 1937 at Teatr Nowy in Warsaw (under the directorship of Jerzy Leszczyński), it fell into complete oblivion which lasted until the recent discovery of the director’s copy buried at the Academy of Theatre Library in Warsaw. While contemporary reviewers found A Literary Prize to be one of the weaker works of an outstanding poet, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska in her letters contrasted the ‘violent attacks’ of the critics with a fairly warm reception of the general audience. The play was performed to capacity audiences until 19 May, and revived for a single occasion a year later in Poznań. A Literary Prize juxtaposes two plots. One, with elements of comedy of manners, follows the fortunes of a young girl, Taida Serebrzycka, who tries to navigate between two men with literary ambitions, Klemens Niedzicki and Albin Niekawski, while the other explores the challenges faced by prospective writers, especially the role of prize-winning competitions in the discovery of talent and the building of reputation. This article is focused primarily on the character of Taida, who makes the impression of being somewhat scatterbrained and snobbish, but is in fact a strong-minded, independent young woman conscious of her sexuality. She wants an honest, equal relationship, and is ready to fi ght hard for her happiness, which does include sexual satisfaction. The analysis of the reception of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s play, and especially the characterization of Taida, the female protagonist, is complemented with an examination of the mechanisms of the critical discourse.
