    Polish-born, Milan-based designer, Dorota Koziara has been active on the international design scene for two decades. Her artistic career has swung between her national roots and the well-established traditions of Italian design. Working alongside the iconic Alessandro Mendini, Koziara gained a brand-new way of self-expression, smoothly intermingling between the two cultures. Her activity covers an outstanding range of projects, she is also the winner of the Third Millennium International Sculpture Competition held in Italy. Her achievements on both Polish and Italian design scenes are a unique example of how fluid contemporary trends based on national heritage can be. In this border-free society, the influences and relations between Polish and Italian design seem to be highly important. After centuries of inspiration and domination by Italian art, today’s scene shows a different approach to multicultural dialogue, the results of which are apparent in Koziara’s works. The article focuses on her achievements in the light of reciprocal Polish-Italian influences.

    The article presents the problems of private life of intellectuals in Poland “after Yalta” through the prism of the cinema. The biggest problem of people in the 1950s and 1960s was the lack of a satisfying home. The homes of young intellectuals shown in Polish films are the spectrum of dreams, most often impossible to achieve in real life. Apartments located in multi-family housing estates that immortalized in the Polish feature films between the years 1956–1970 are confirmation of the highest quality of Polish industrial design. Real people’s apartments were cramped, ugly, and primitive.

    Opis:
    This article aims to create an outline of the trends in contemporary scenography in Poland. The perception of today’s stage design has been formed through the combined effect of the state of researched descriptions, education, institutions, and special-events development.The results are far from satisfactory, as some shortcomings in terms of documenting works are apparent. A similar situation can be observed in the case of scientific and critical publications. Limitations are also placed on the funding of institutions whose main task is to protect and preserve our scenographic heritage. On the positive side, the development of education, though not dynamic, gives opportunities for individual growth through contact with masters. Continuing master-student relationships (which were not interrupted even by the War) are contributing to the unique character of stage design in the context of post-war Polish art.
    Artykuł jest próbą stworzenia zarysu tendencji w recepcji współczesnej scenografii w Polsce. Za pośrednictwem sumarycznego opisu stanu badań, rozwoju szkolnictwa, instytucji i wydarzeń okazjonalnych takich jak festiwale portretowany jest wizerunek współczesnej scenografii. Wynik nie jest zadowalający, ponieważ widać braki w postaci dokumentowania powstałych dzieł, tworzenia zbiorów i kolekcji powiększających dorobek kulturowy. Podobnie jest w zakresie publikacji naukowych i krytycznych. Scenografia marginalizowana jest w badaniach teatrologicznych. Ograniczony jest również wkład finansowy dla instytucji mających na celu dbanie o dorobek scenograficzny jak np. Centrum Scenografii Polskiej. Krzepiący jest jednak rozwój szkolnictwa, który nie przebiega w sposób dynamiczny, ale daje możliwość indywidualnego rozwoju poprzez kontakty z mistrzami. Nieprzerwana (nawet wojną) kontynuacja relacji mistrz-uczeń czyni scenografię wyjątkową w kontekście powojennej polskiej sztuki.

    During the communistic time period in Poland (Polish PRL state) people bought toys at the toys shops, the “RUCH” chain retailer and press shops, dedicated equipment stores for the scouts (Skladnica Harcerska) and at the church consecration festivals.Only few people got US dollar or other western currencies to buy imported western toys at special designated foreign currency shops “Pewex”. The majority of the teddy bears, toy cars and plastic blocks have been made domestically. Despite of the material and production technology shortage there have been many different toys in diverse quality on the market. Some of them good made and very popular. This was in major cases thanks to good designers. Those toys have been produced between 1940-1980 and distributed in special retail shops (PDT). In my article I will illustrate their history and daily problems and challenges of the employees working there.
    W 1980 roku Janos Kornai opublikował pracę pt. „Gospodarka niedoboru”. Zdefiniował w ten sposób centralnie sterowaną gospodarkę Komunistyczną. Także w Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej, kraju, w którym po II wojnie światowej władzę przejęła Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza, brakowało wielu artykułów. Choć osobom żyjącym w czasach PRL w pamięci zapisał się głównie brak podstawowych artykułów spożywczych czy przemysłowych, także ilość (i jakość) zabawek pozostawiała wiele do życzenia. Brakowało nie tylko tkanin, surowców i innych materiałów potrzebnych do produkcji zabawek, ale także specjalistycznych maszyn i innych urządzeń. Nie było także odpowiedniej ilości wykwalifikowanych pracowników, m.in. z tego powodu w okresie PRL-u nie każde przedsiębiorstwo produkujące zabawki zatrudniało własnych projektantów. Mimo to w spółdzielniach pracy (bo to właśnie stamtąd pochodziła większość lalek czy samochodzików, które można było kupić w sklepach czy kioskach ruchu) powstawało wiele ciekawych wzorów. W artykule opisałam zarówno działalność zakładowych wzorcowni i prototypowni, jak i przywołałam nazwiska projektantów pracujących w przemyśle zabawkarskim.

    The Warsaw-based Grupa 5 Architekci studio is a team of several dozen designers operating on the Polish construction market, shaped by the experience of the Polish transformation. After two decades of activity, the architects who created it undertook a joint attempt at ideological self-definition. The aim of the article is to show how personal conclusions drawn from education, subsequent practice, the evolution of the theory of architecture as well as personal beliefs and experiencing space translate into specific design solutions. Since one of the architectural threads connecting people co-creating the studio are achievements in the field of designing quarter development, the method adopted in the article is a detailed analysis of this part of the work of Grupa 5, from the implementation of individual buildings to the urban planning assumptions of large housing complexes. The article ends with the author’s theses on the philosophy of design, which result from design practice.
    Warszawska pracownia Grupa 5 Architekci to działający na polskim rynku budowlanym kilkudziesięcioosobowy zespół projektantów ukształtowany przez doświadczenia polskiej transformacji. Po dwóch dekadach działalności tworzący go architekci podjęli wspólną próbę ideowego samookreślenia. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, jak osobiste wnioski płynące z edukacji, późniejszej praktyki, ewolucji teorii architektury oraz z osobistych przekonań i doświadczania przestrzeni przekładają się na konkretne rozwiązania projektowe. Ponieważ jednym z architektonicznych wątków łączących ludzi współtworzących pracownię są dokonania w zakresie projektowania zabudowy kwartałowej, metodą przyjętą w artykule jest szczegółowa analiza tego wycinka twórczości Grupy 5 od realizacji pojedynczych budynków do urbanistycznych założeń dużych zespołów mieszkaniowych. Artykuł zamykają płynące z praktyki projektowej – autorskie tezy dotyczące filozofii projektowania.

    Purpose: The spectrum is scarce recourses, so it is very important to allocate it in a way to maximize the economic and social returns to the countries` economies. Economists agree that the best way to allocate rare resources are auctions. Despite their good properties, in some environments, they can create inefficiency. We describe some potential sources of inefficiency in spectrum auctions and some negative effects of inefficient spectrum allocation. We also discuss how the government through appropriate spectrum policy and auction designing can promote efficient spectrum allocation. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on the literature on the spectrum auction and public documents published by national spectrum authorities. Theoretical discussions are supported by case studies of real world spectrum auctions. Much attention has been paid to the case of the Polish 4G auction. Findings: Extremely high reserve prices or rigorous approach to promoting entry could lead to price distortions, misallocation or even unsold spectrum which harm both competition and consumers. The case of the Polish 4G auction confirms that gaps in the detailed auction rules may lead to significant delays in frequency allocation and increase the risk of an ineffective auction outcome. Practical implications: In the light of our findings, it is important that the rules of the auction in the 3.6 GHz band currently planned in Poland should allow the regulator to control the pace of the auction and take into account the risk of inefficient outcome associated with passive bids. Originality/value: The discussions made in this paper could help policy makers in Poland and other countries in spectrum auction designing.

    The Exhibition of Modern Art (Wystawa Sztuki Nowoczesnej) organized in 1948 in the Palace of Art (Pałac Sztuki) in Cracow was one of the most prominent art events in Poland during the last century. It is considered one of the unprecedented moments in shaping the modernity. The exhibition was thought to be designed as a whole venture, integrating the modern art demonstration with the will to make it accessible to all the social groups. The desire of the authors was to endear the authorities, since the Stalinist repressions were approaching, and present the modern art as accessible to the society and needed in the “new socialist order”. Simultaneously, the primal context for the exhibition, underlined by its authors as well as the critics in subsequent years, were the surrealist exhibitions in Paris. This new avant-garde mode of displaying, so attractive for the Polish artists, put in the foreground not the traditional reception of art, implied by the traditional museology, but mostly focused on the spectator’s experience and used all possible kinds of tools to enhance it. These two approaches were usually presented as antagonistic and impossible to reconcile. The article attempts to analyze the tools which the display’s authors used to merge the avant-garde display with didacticism. While looking at the Recovered Territories Exhibition which took place a couple of months earlier, one might notice that the Exhibition of Modern Art was not the first display that accommodated the avant-garde solutions to the didactic and propagandistic venture.

    Classics of Polish Design. Furniture Icons from the Polish People's Republic (PRL) presents a review of the best Polish furniture designs from the Polish People's Republic: the 1950s and 1960s. The paper continues the series devoted to the "Classical Polish Design", presenting the results of research on Polish post-war furniture and the icons of Polish design, carried out within the framework of dissertations in the Department of Wood Technology in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW). Some of the innovative furniture designs have been analysed in the hereby article. We present a chronologically organised review of designs that aspired to become breakthrough and timeless (design icons), with the author's background and the furniture's style, structure and materials.
    Klasyka polskiego designu. Ikony meblarstwa PRL-u. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie najlepszych projektów mebli z czasów PRL-u, czyli lat 50. i 60. Artykuł kontynuuje cykl „Klasyka polskiego designu”, prezentujący wyniki badań nad powojennym polskim meblarstwem i ikonami polskiego designu, prowadzonych w ramach prac dyplomowych na WTD SGGW. W artykule przeanalizowano nowatorskie projekty mebli. W ujęciu chronologicznym wybrano i opisano projekty aspirujące do roli przełomowych i ponadczasowych (ikon wzornictwa), przedstawiając osobę autora i charakteryzując meble stylistycznie, konstrukcyjnie i materiałowo.

    This article presents the results of a study of the graphic layout of twelve Polish popular science periodicals published in Warsaw and Cracow in the 18th century. The study compares the characteristic features of their layout and graphic design, identifies their European models, traces the sources of their texts and graphics (figures), and considers their use of various typefaces and special decorative elements to make the scientific content easier to grasp and understand.

    Classics of Polish Design. Post-War Polish Furniture Design the paper presents a review of Polish post-war design in the times of Polish People's Republic: in the 1950s and 1960s. It is the first paper in the series of "Classical Polish Design", presenting the results of research on Polish furniture and the icons of Polish design, carried out within the framework of dissertations in the Department of Wood Technology in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW). The paper presents two main trends in Polish post-war design, together with their background. We analysed the development of industrial design and of mass production dedicated for mass users, as well as the education system for industrial designers. We present the concept of furniture for small living spaces and the impact of global trends, availability of new materials and technological solutions on Polish furniture design.
    Klasyka polskiego designu. Powojenne polskie wzornictwo meblowe. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie problematyki powojennego wzornictwa polskiego czasów PRL-u, czyli lat 50. i 60. Artykuł inauguruje cykl „Klasyka polskiego designu”, prezentujący wyniki badań nad powojennym polskim meblarstwem i ikonami polskiego designu, prowadzonych w ramach prac dyplomowych na WTD SGGW. W artykule określono główne tendencje w polskim wzornictwie powojennym i ich uwarunkowania. Przeanalizowano rozwój wzornictwa przemysłowego, rozwór produkcji masowej przeznaczonej dla masowego odbiorcy i system kształcenia projektantów przemysłowych. Przedstawiono ideę mebli dla małych mieszkań oraz wpływ tendencji światowych, czy dostępności nowych materiałów i możliwości technologicznych na polskie projekty mebli.
