This review discussed the book by Michał Jacek Jarmuż (2020), entitled Housing Problems in Poland in the 1970s in the Light of Personal Documents [Problemy mieszkaniowe w Polsce w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku w świetle dokumentów osobistych] which was published in 2020 by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. This publication is the result of the doctoral dissertation defended in 2014, written under the supervision of prof. Dariusz Jarosz at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, who has specialized and researched for many years, inter alia, housing issues in 20th-century Poland, doing so both through the lens of classic archival files and personal documents (Jarosz, 1996; 2006; 2008; 2010; Miernik, 2006). This fact undoubtedly influenced the choice of research topics and the type of historical sources used in the work.

This journal article discusses articles about the Catholic Church in Poland that appeared in the daily Polish newspaper Trybuna Ludu [The People’s Tribune] in 1949. This official publication of the Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza) played an important role in spreading propaganda during communist rule in the Polish People’s Republic. During this time, the communist authorities sought to subordinate and neutralize the Church. The year 1949 was particularly important in the history of the relationship between the state and the church because it was then that the communist authorities launched a media offensive against the Catholic Church. While the authorities officially claimed to guarantee religious freedom, they forbid religion from being taught in Polish schools and supported only pro-government “patriot priests.” Specifically, Trybuna Ludu reported lawsuits filed against priests who supported the anti-communist underground. An analysis of these articles demonstrates how the communist party used Trybuna Ludu as a tool to spread propaganda.

The drive towards reforms in the area of economic policy is permanent. The need of reforms is a practically never abandoned subject. The only exceptions tend to be periods when the status quo is accepted, and it is its consolidation that is being discussed. Things did not look any different in the times of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR). The rhythm of subsequent reform attempts determined the chronology of the development of the situation. The author set himself two goals: chronological ordering and typologisation of reform efforts in the PPR and presentation of the  continuation of certain ways of thinking at the turn of the year 1989. Typologisation was assumed to concern ways of thinking rather than specific people and thus, it is not a biographic guide to reform circles.

Opis:
Systemic transformation in Poland after the Second World War led to deep transformations within the economy. It did not, however, change the way people thought. Despite the chaos of the post-war period, in which all the negative features shaped in the period of occupation manifested themselves, it seemed that the conceptual leaders of the Polish political and economic life would create new quality. However, it soon turned out that old habits die hard and the system created by communists opened a field for many abuses. This was accompanied by a sense of impunity, as the most prominent personalities in a given region were also involved in economic scandals. All this resulted in the creation of “cliques” in which both prominent Party activists and people put by the Party in high positions (usually also members of the Polish United Workers’ Party, PUWP) played important roles. On the one hand, after 1956, surveillance by the Security Office (UB) or Security Services (SB) was not that strict anymore, and on the other, the so-called “private initiative” started to develop fast – therefore the more “entrepreneurial” individuals started to exploit the situation and gain wealth. Abusing one’s position to organize large-scale thefts was considered relatively normal. This happened in various forms: sometimes directly, but more often by supporting or even organizing private projects with the use of the national, though unsupervised, supply of raw materials or products. This way, the Party members grew richer at the expense of the companies they worked for. This business was relatively widely tolerated by ordinary citizens, who saw it as an excuse to also “organize” goods individually for their own purposes in the companies which employed them. This common belief that “everybody steals” allowed people to justify their own dishonesty. Any attempts to fight this problem failed to produce satisfactory results. The diagnosis, even if correct, had to face reality, in which the pursuit of a better quality of life by the Party elites collided with the officially promoted ascetic lifestyles of the “ideological communists”, who, like Władysław Gomułka, did not understood the new times.

Opis:
In post-war Poland, rationing was introduced on three occasions: right after the war in 1945, then in 1951, and at the turn of the 1980s. In 1976, rationing cards for sugar were introduced, in 1981 - for meat, fats, cereal products, cleaning products and many other goods. Fuels were the last product added to this list. This article describes the process of introducing a rationing system for petrol in the Polish People’s Republic. Though the supply system crashed as early as 1981, it took several years to organize a rationing system for petrol. Its evolution did not end until 1984. This delay was caused by the long discussions on how the system should be built. This forced the authorities to introduce a whole range of temporary solutions which limited the demand in the short run, but had no soothing effect whatsoever on the society. To the contrary - the chaos they created intensified negative tendencies (such as speculation), led to market insecurity, and increased mistrust of state regulations.

On the Polish market, original and stylised products referring to the era of socialism are becoming popular. These are mainly cultural and entertainment products with both everyday and artistic items being offered and purchased on online auction portals while the production of sentimental memorabilia from the period of the Polish People’s Republic is also being developed. At the same time, the growing interest in Poland as a tourist destination among both domestic and foreign tourists is the reason for the increasing curiosity of its socialist past. Therefore, tourist offers based on relics of that era are increasingly being created on the domestic tourist market, however, the quality of these products and services sometimes raises concerns over the quality of the message that they carry. The main question is whether this is only a simplified message based on stereotypes which give the recipient only a truncated and shallow picture of Poland’s difficult past. This article discusses the main trends and the conditions necessary for the creation of services and products based on relics of socialism in Poland and is based on sources from Polish and foreign literature, both academic and professional, as well as the websites of businesses and institutions creating such market offers.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to examine the discourse on Frédéric Chopin that took place in Poland in 1949, when the 100th anniversary of his birth coincided with the culmination of the socialist realist propaganda in the field of Polish culture. The discourse, initiated and moderated under effective surveillance of the Polish People’s Republic’s government, was filled with communist ideology. The authorities aimed at creating a sense of communion in the Polish nation, therefore they undertook numerous actions in the area of cultivating memory of Chopin and reception of his works. The composer was used as a banner under which the culture of socialist realism was to be consolidated. Chopin was presented by the narrators in the socialist realist context in various dimensions. “Deep humanism”, “truth”, “optimism”, “sincerity” and “democratic features” of Chopin’s music were the crucial notions used by them. Chopin was depicted, among others, as a revolutionist and a prophet of triumph of communism. The oeuvre of Chopin was said to bring together “fraternal countries and nations”, Polish People’s Republic and Soviet Union, while being simultaneously a crucial element of class conflict. The authorities had a tendency to overemphasize folk roots of his compositions, thus among musical genres composed by Chopin the importance of Mazurka was exaggerated. Other genres without such strong folk connotations, as sonatas, ballades and scherzos, were marginalized in the discourse.

The politics of memory and culture of the Polish People’s Republic alludes to Ideologiekritik in its idiosyncratic way characterized by Marxist utopianism. In reality, this leads to reversing this theory. The causes of fascism are seen in “German imperialism”. For political and strategic reasons the German Democratic Republic becomes one of the main partners of the Polish People’s Republic, with regard to which it is capable of accomplishing the guidelines of its policy in the cultural dimension. This is accompanied by an intensive cultural exchange between the two countries. In the language of official politics manifested, for instance, in the strategy of publishing houses of the Polish People’s Republic the culture of the two countries develop in a parallel fashion, which is an obvious product of the propaganda.

The divergence in the structure of the education of men and women in the Polish People’s Republic. Between the state policy and individual educational choices (Summary)In the era of the Polish People’s Republic, the gender divergence in the structure of education grew in parallel with an increase in the number of women who obtained secondary and higher school education. The analysis given in the article supplements our knowledge on the topic with details on the analysis presented here, it is possible to specify two factors which, while linked to the educational policy pursued in communist Poland, stood behind the divergence under discussion. First, vocational schools offered training in trades reserved mainly for men, which led women to opt for high school general education. Second, women’s access to some ‘male’ schools was formally restricted. Women’s educational advantage, which was the result of the policy conducted by the state in the fi eld of education, can thus be regarded as having been an unintentional side effect of the reforms introduced in Poland after the Second World War.

Social attitudes toward communism in Poland encompassed the whole spectrum of attitudes, from affirmation, through adaptation, to resistance and dissent. Komitet Obrony Robotników (Workers’ Defence Committee), later transformed into the Social Self-Defence Committee ‘KOR’ was a new of type opposition against the communist regime; it created a political alternative and new methods of system contestation, which were followed by other groups in the democratic opposition in the 1970s. The main features of the KOR opposition model are: openness, acting without violence, absence of hierarchic organization, decentralization, legalism, solidarity, specified social objectives, political self-limitation, ethical radicalism, pluralism and civic virtue.

Opis:
Women employed in State Agricultural Farms (SAF) were blue- and white-collar workers, the former group being more numerous. However, the blue-collar workers mainly worked seasonally, during the period of intensive field work. When it comes to fulltime work, it was usually related to animal production. The demand for this type of work decreased with the progress of mechanization. Meanwhile, the demand for white-collar workers, especially those with agricultural education and experience, increased. Since the 1960s, the SAFs increasingly employed women qualified in agronomy, animal production, and veterinary medicine. However, they were not always accepted in positions traditionally considered “masculine”. For most women, work in SAFs was not attractive due to difficult working conditions and low prestige. If a woman decided to work there, it was usually for economic reasons. Most women did not take up professional activity and performed the traditional roles of wives and mothers.
