Opis:
In this paper the results of buffer ability investigations of 10 profiles of the Podhale region are presented. Buffer curves are plotted - buffer capacities and buffering areas are calculated for them. The obtained results were compared with some physico-chemical properties. It was found that the soils of Podhale region belong mainly to strongly buffered soils and their basebuffering ability is higher than acid-buffer one. The differences of the buffering degree are caused first of all by different mechanical composition, the content of humus and carbonates, and the degree of base saturation. Buffer areas are significantly correlated with sorption properties of the soils. The highest buffer ability is in alluvial and deluvial soils (among the tested soils) and the lowest one is in forest podzolized acid brown soils. Knowledge of buffer abilities of these soils is very important because of high precipitation (with the low pH of rainfall) in this region.

The Mała Łąka Fault in the Tatra Mts. is a synsedimentary normal fault responsible for the variable thickness of Eocene deposits in the area. Its main activity took place in the interval from the sedimentation of red conglomerates to the appearance of nummulitic limestones. The estimated throw is up to 350 m. Near the northern margin of the Tatra Mts., the trend of the fault changes from N.S to NE.SW. This part of the fault could have been activated during the Neogene uplift of the Tatra Mts. and rejuvenated as a sinistral fault. In the upper reach of the Mała Łąka Stream, the fault trend does not follow the course of the Mała Łąka Valley. Here, the flowing stream waters used extensional fractures within a damage zone associated with the Mała Łąka Fault rather than the lithological boundary at the tectonic contact between the Triassic dolomites and the Eocene conglomerates. The fault has a hingelike character; its hinge was located in the present-day Kościeliska Valley, c. 2.5 km west of the Mała Łąka Valley.

Opis:
The authors studied landslides in alluvial sediments on undercut steep banks of the rivers flowing in the western part of the Podhale region. The landslides are of rotational type. Landsliding processes are complex and they differ from those on solid rock slopes because of the heterogeneous lithology of the alluvial sediments in the banks (muds, sandy gravels, clays) and because of uneven degree of their consolidation. Their course depends on the mode rate of water infiltration into the sediments. Multiannual observations of changing landslide surfaces and measurements of scarp surface with erosion pins indicate that each type of sediment behaves in a different way during the sliding. The layers of mud in the highest parts of the banks were sliding down in blocks and soon became fragmented, soaked and washed away. Sandy gravels were sliding as whole layers or separate fragments. The more compact the alluvium, the more compact was the resulting colluvium. The thick layers of massive claystones underlying the alluvial sediments at the bank bases were mobilized by landsliding only to the depth to which they became plastic. The claystones appeared the most resistant to landsliding among the bank materials. The surfaces of rupture were shallow and uneven where poorly consolidated layers of alluvium lied horizontally (landslides at Chochołów and Ludźmierz). In areas where alluvial sediments were more consolidated and inclined, and the layers of clay alternated with sands and gravels, the surface of rupture occurred deeper and was smooth (Stare Bystre landslide). Landslides in undercut river banks are an important source of debris in fluvial channels.

Opis:
This paper is a report on the phonological research done in the past two years investigating Podhale Goralian. The data are drawn from our informants in Dzianisz. The paper establishes the system of surface contrasts in Goralian and identifies instances of complementary distribution. It is claimed that the renowned Podhale Archaism is no longer represented by the vowel [i]. Rather, the vowel has retracted to the central vowel [ɨ]. The original [ɨ], on the other hand, has lowered and fronted and is now best regarded as tense [e]. These transitions of vowels pose challenges for a phonological analysis. A sample of such analysis (Final Tensing) is shown in the framework of Optimality Theory.

Opis:
The research on the Oligocene succession of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin (CCPB) in the Kacwin region focused on sedimentological and palynofacies analyses. Observations were carried out in natural exposures along three streams flowing in the Polish Spisz: Kacwinianka, Łapszanka and Kacwiński. Three main groups of lithofacies have been distinguished: coarse-grained, mixed and sandy-grained, and fine-grained. The lithofacies are characterized by variable sedimentary structures, e.g. massive structure, horizontal lamination, ripple cross-lamination, hummocky cross-stratification, deformation structure. Sedimentological analyses showed that structures typical for turbidity currents and those characteristic of relatively shallow deposition (HCS, wave ripples) could coexist in the investigated succession interpreted as typical for turbidity currents influenced by storm waves. This indicates relatively shallow-water environments. The palynofacies analysis enabled identification of the following components: black wood, brown wood, cortex, resin, sporomorphs, cuticle, algae, dinoflagellates and AOM. A high proportion of black wood and low diversity of components point to an origin related to turbidity currents. Furthermore, results of the palynofacies analysis have allowed determining that, during the deposition of the CCPB sediments in the Polish Spisz area, the distance between the deposition area and the source area became relatively large. The biostratigraphic analysis of dinoflagellate cysts from the Podhale Basin (Szaflary, Zakopane, and lower Chochołów beds) indicates an Early Rupelian age. Moreover, kerogen analysis in the UV was applied for the first time to study the CCPB succession. As a result, reworking was documented, so far unrecognized by other methods, and the mutual verification of the obtained results was possible.

Opis:
Tufas in the Podhale Synclinorium (southern Poland) occur as encrustations on moss and plant remains, crusts, porous, clastic and massive tufas. The tufas are almost entirely composed of calcite with small admixture of quartz, illite and chlorite. These deposits indicate the biotic and/or abiotic origin of calcium carbonate. The tufas occur in the vicinity of map-scale and minor fault zones. They precipitate near fissure springs linked with small faults and fault rocks or seepages along them. Exposures with tufas occur along several oblique and lateral zones. The oblique zones are related to Białka and Biały Dunajec faults that have normal components. The lateral zones of tufa occurrences are connected with lateral faults limiting the “zone of beds with gentle dips” and extensional brittle structures within the hinge of the synclinorium. The relationship of the tufa with brittle extensional structures suggests Quaternary tectonic activity of the Podhale Synclinorium that can be explained by continued uplift in the area studied.

Opis:
Common occurrences of terrigenic organic matter (both disseminated and accumulated in layers) in sedimentary rocks were observed. The flysch sediments in the Podhale Trough and in other parts of the Carpathians are inadequately recognised from coal petrologic point of view. Studies were carried out in the eastern (2008) and western part (2009) of the Podhale Trough. Samples were collected from the exposures. Petrographic studies included microscopic observations of polished sections as well as mean random reflectance measurements of vitrinite (colotellinite) were done. In the Podhale Flysch, coalified organic matter is represented mostly by vitrinite and, in microscopic scale, mainly by collotellinite. The common occurrence of coaly matter is revealed. It is well–visible in sandstones and mudstones, usually as the bedding planes. The amounts of coaly matter in clay minerals and carbonates are small. Organic matter hosted in the Podhale Flysch strata represents diversified coalification ranks measured as random reflectance of vitrinite (colotellinite), which falls into the range from 0.49 to 1.00%. Such values are typical for low- to medium ranks of bituminous coal. Measurements of reflectance provided new data suitable for evaluation of thermal history of rocks in the Podhale Trough. The changes of vitrinite (colotellinite) mean reflectance of organic matter from the Podhale Flysch are relevant to the contents of crystalline illite – the recently applied geothermometer of diagenetic (katagenetic) transformations of clay minerals. If the thermal palaeogra- dient is known, random changes of reflectance of vitrinite can be used for estimations of both the maximum thickness of the Podhale Flysch during deposition and its later amount of erosion. It appears that estimation of ma- ximum thickness of the Podhale Flysch (i.e., depositional thickness after compaction) and the amount of erosion are almost identical with the estimations based upon the illitization of clay minerals.

A detailed malacological analysis was made of sediments associated with a small landslide which had developed on the north-eastern slope of Majerz Hill near Niedzica (Inner Carpathians, Southern Poland). The age of the development and environmental changes associated with particular phases of the landslide was determined by means of radiocarbon dating. The analyses made it possible to distinguish two periods of landslide activation falling on the turn of the Early/Middle Holocene and on the Late Holocene (probably on the Iron Age Cold Period). These phases are closely related to periods of increased mass movements, both of landslides and debris flows in other European mountains, stages of glacial advance in the Alps, periods of increased fluvial activity in rivers and elevated water levels in European lakes. The molluscan assemblages also enabled the reconstruction of environmental conditions before the landslide formation, during periods of dormancy, and after the end of its activity.

Recently, an increased interest of various industrial and economy branches in geothermal waters has been observed. In Poland, one of the most famous geothermal systems is the Podhale Basin, which forms an important reservoir of geothermal waters with relatively low mineralization and high temperatures. More and more often geothermal water is used not only for balneological or recreational purposes, but also as a heat source for heating. New areas of application of geothermal waters are also appearing, e.g. the use of cooled geothermal water as a raw material to produce fresh water. Another example of the application of geothermal waters is the cosmetic industry. For instance, a cream based on geothermal water from Podhale was introduced to the cosmetics market in 2013. This paper presents the possibilities of using the geothermal waters of Podhale, with particular emphasis on geothermal waters from Banska PGP-1, Banska IG-1 and Banska PGP-3 boreholes.

Opis:
At present, hydro-geothermal resources in which waters in bores are the carrier of heat energy have commercial importance in Poland. Geothermal waters should feature the highest possible temperature in the outflow, low mineral content, high capacity and low deposit depth. Even though geothermal energy is included in renewable sources of energy, complete depletion of the deposit is the largest risk in extracting geothermal waters. This is why these waters should also feature deposit renewability. There are currently several geothermal provinces with beneficial geothermal conditions in Poland, with the area of the Podhale Basin in the Inner Carpathians region being regarded as the most promising. The Podhale deposit also meets all of the above listed conditions. The possibility of using hydrothermal energy in Poland is practically available throughout the country, but operational use of hot groundwater must be profitable for investors. From another point of view, the environmental impact of such investments should be minimized. This paper is concerned with the special variety of temperature of geothermal waters extracted in the area of the Podhale Basin, which is the basic aspect in using deposits of this type.

Geothermal waters under national conditions have the status of minerals, which means that their exploitation is carried out in accordance with the provisions of Geological and Mining Law. In the area of the Podhale Basin, one of the boreholes that extracts water of elevated temperature is the Chochołów PIG-1 borehole which constitutes the basis for the functioning of the Chochołowskie Termy recreation complex. The main feature of the waters intake due to the correct functioning of the complex is the stability of temperature and physicochemical parameters. The variability of most important hydrogeological parameters (temperature, SEC, SO42-, Cl-, HCO3-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+) with available data base were chosen for the analyzes. These parameters determine economic viability and proper conditions for the technical exploitation of geothermal borehole Chochołów PIG-1. Water chemistry has been studied in the area of ionic index markings determining the type of exploitating geothermal water. This paper presents the results of analyzes of selected parameters in the years 2016-2017 and indicates trends in their contents in the given period. The general conclusion is that under operating conditions in accordance with the approved performance, physicochemical parameters are characterized by relative stability. The appropriate exploitation of water from the Chochołów PIG-1 borehole allows for maintaining the proper temperature, which is the underpinning for the functioning of the recreation and balneology complex of the Chochołowskie Termy.

Opis:
The current study is exploratory in character and aims to investigate the extent to which dialectal features are present in a stylised version of a regional variety of Polish. The focus is on three traditional features of Podhale Goralian that make it markedly different from Standard Polish: the treatment of Middle Polish raised vowels ė ȧ ȯ, prenasal raising and the Podhale archaism. The material analysed comprises a selection of recordings of Józef Tischner’s Historii filozofii po góralsku [A Goral History of Philosophy] performed by himself. The recordings were subjected to acoustic analysis to obtain values of the first two formants of the relevant vowels. An analysis was then conducted with the help of vowel plots created on the basis of the measurements. The conclusions indicate that the traditional features of Podhale Goralian are not always consistently realized in the recordings, which in the majority of cases may be attributed to the influence of Standard Polish.

The lithological and malacological studies covered sediments forming the low terrace of the Rogoźnik Stream in the northwest part of the Podhale Basin. This terrace is characterised by a uniform structure within a significant part of the valley. Three layers of gravel and four layers of sandy and silty muds were found there. A rich and diversified malacofauna was discovered in fine-grained sediments. Its analysis allowed us to characterise environmental conditions during sediment deposition. The age of the individual components of the sedimentary sequence was determined by radiocarbon dating. A distinct change was found in the upper intervals of the sequence, corresponding to the warm phase of the Medieval Climate Optimum. This period is associated with the robust development of agriculture, and processes related to human activities became the main factor shaping the environment, influencing the course of geological processes, and changing the taxonomical and ecological structure of the fauna and flora assemblages found in this area.

Karstified carbonates which outcrop in the Tatras, Inner Carpathians, southern Poland, and dip to the north under the flysch sediments of the Podhale Basin, represent the largest known renewable reservoir of thermal waters in the country, with temperatures up to about 80°C. Measurements of He excess, Ne and Ar unexpectedly revealed the existence of glacial age waters in the northeastern part of the basin, and late Holocene age waters in other parts. The noble gas data are shown to be in accordance with newly interpreted earlier long-term records of 3H, δ18O and δ2H in waters of the karstic springs, and with available determinations of 3H, δ18O, δ2H, 14C and δ13C in cold and thermal well waters.
