Opis:
In the present study, the fluid flow in a periodic, non-isotropic dual scale porous media consisting of permeable square rods in inline arrangement is analyzed to determine permeability, numerically. The continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are solved to obtain the velocity and pressure distributions in the unit structures of the dual scale porous media for flows within Darcy region. Based on the obtained results, the intrinsic inter and intraparticle permeabilities and the bulk permeability tensor of the dual scale porous media are obtained for different values of inter and intraparticle porosities. The study is performed for interparticle porosities between 0.4 and 0.75 and for intraparticle porosities from 0.2 to 0.8. A correlation based on Kozeny-Carman relationship in terms of inter and intraparticle porosities and permeabilities is proposed to determine the bulk permeability tensor of the dual scale porous media.

Opis:
Thermo-physiological properties are very much connected to water vapour and air permeability. There are multiple standards with different working principles to determine the exact performance of any textile material. However, most of these tests are time-consuming and work on the steady state principle, whereas few devices work on heat flux, where results can be obtained much more quickly. The research article covers the testing of 8 unique shirt samples on these devices compared that on a novel device created by the author to see how much the results differ from each other. Lastly, a theoretical approach was used to determine any correlation between air permeability and water vapour permeability. The research work helps in understanding the working of different devices used for water vapour permeability and allows a reduction in time by using a predictive approach with just the results from the air permeability machine.

Opis:
Petroleum substances are non-polar, lithophilic and very slightly soluble in water. They have strong toxic and carcinogenic properties, they are dangerous for human health and life; they easily get into the environment. The sources of incidents involving petroleum substances and the oil itself are industrial processes, including failures of processing and extraction installations, storage and transport, which includes rail, road (tank disasters), pipeline and water transport. Often there is an uncontrolled leakage of a substance that directly enters the ground and the aquatic environment. The dominant soils in Poland are brown and ground soils. The water permeability of soils is defined as the amount of water soaked by a given cross-section of soil, at a given time, per unit of hydraulic slope. The measure of permeability is the permeability coefficient, which depends on the properties of the test medium. This study aimed to determine the influence of soil structure on the permeability, permeability coefficient and capillary capacity wetland soil and black earth for gasoline, diesel and used oil using water as a reference liquid. The study on permeability of soils was carried out using Ostromęcki’s method and Ziemnicki's apparatus. The soil samples (wetland soil and black earth) were collected form lubuskie voivodship. Each time 150cm3 of soil was analyzed. Next, 50 ml of tested liquid was added on the soil surface and soaking time was recorded. The action was repeated 3 times to the total of 150 ml of tested fluid. Measured parameters included permeability, permeability coefficient and capillary capacity. Permeability of gasoline, diesel and used oil increased significantly with each added volume (p < 0.001). While permeability of used oil was over 20-times lower comparing to gasoline and petrol tested in the same conditions (p < 0.001). The results for black earth, indicated that permeability for gasoline increased over 5-times with the second addition of 50 ml of gasoline (p < 0.001) and permeability for diesel and used oil lead to 3-time rise for gasoline (p < 0.001) and 4-time increase for water (p < 0.001). Analysis of capillary capacity showed that at the beginning gasoline and diesel capillary capacity was significantly lower compared to water (p < 0.001) for wetland soil but not for black earth where gasoline capillary capacity was even higher compared to water (p < 0.01). Addition of subsequent volumes of liquid significantly decreased capillary capacity for all tested liquids in both soils type. Furthermore, comparison of wetland soil and black earth soils indicated that permeability, permeability coefficient and capillary capacity was 2-5-times higher for wetland soil compared to black earth for all tested liquids. The results indicated that permeability of wetland soil is higher compared to black earth in case of gasoline and diesel but not used oil. Interestingly, permeability of black earth for diesel was markedly lower compared to wetland soil.
Często dochodzi do niekontrolowanego wycieku substancji bezpośrednio do ziemi i środowiska wodnego. Badanie przepuszczalności gleb przeprowadzono metodą Ostromęckiego i aparatem Ziemnickiego. Próbki gleby (bagiennej I czarnoziemu) pobrano z województwa lubuskiego. Za każdym razem analizowano 150 cm3 gleby. Następnie dodano 50 ml badanej cieczy na powierzchnię gleby i zarejestrowano czas namaczania. Czynność powtórzono 3 razy do całkowitej objętości badanego płynu wynoszącej 150 ml. Zmierzone parametry obejmowały: przepuszczalność, współczynnik przepuszczalności i pojemność kapilarną. Przepuszczalność benzyny, oleju napędowego i zużytego oleju znacznie wzrosła z każdą dodaną objętością (p < 0,001).

As the spread of Covid-19 has created a fatal threat to human survival, a comfortable and virus-deactivated functional face mask is extremely necessary. Herein, an appropriate thermally comfortable and highly breathable as well as virus-protecting functional knit fabric face mask was developed that consisted of multichannel PE Coolmax® yarn with cotton yarn. Due to the multichannel structure (four and six channels) of PE Coolmax® yarn with cotton yarn blended fabric, the fiber showed good filtration efficiency, air permeability, water vapour permeability and moisture management properties. In addition, the thermal conductivity and absorptive properties of the blended fabric based on the properties of PE Coolmax® yarn with cotton yarn make the face mask more comfortable for the user.

The article presents the results of the reinterpretation of the results of the two-cycle DST of the Mesozoic strata in the W-3 well to assess the changes in permeability of reservoir rocks in the test zone. Two-dimensional diagrams of the first and second pressure restoration curves in the semi-logarithm coordinate system were taken into account. The determined linear regression equations of these sections give simultaneously the extrapolated value of the reservoir pressure and the directional coefficient. The “logarithmic approximation” method used in hydrogeology was used to determine the radius of the perimeter zone with altered permeability of the water-bearing rocks of the Mesozoic.

The aim of the study was to determine the radon permeability coefficient of insulating building materials. Eleven insulating materials were tested. A research setup was developed and it was as follows: a tested material was tightly set on the receiver box’s hole and placed into the radon chamber. The measurements showed that for various insulating materials, radon permeability coefficient varies from 1.26 × 10−10 m2/s for film-like materials to 9.95 × 10−8 m2/s for roofing papers. According to our calculations of all insulating materials, the foil-type insulating materials to ensure the best protection against radon flow from the ground. Comparison of different types of building materials shows that the insulating building materials ensure better radiological protection than regular building constructions materials.

Opis:
In the paper, the effect of the surface coating with palladium on hydrogen permeation of a Pd33Ni52Si15 amorphous alloy membrane was investigated. We have measured the hydrogen flow through the melt-spun amorphous membrane covered with palladium film of 10, 20, and 30 nm in thickness. Membranes have been tested in the temperature rage 294–358 K, and at pressure fixed at 102 kPa. We investigate the role of this film thickness on the activation energy for hydrogen permeability. It seemed that a relatively thin layer of the palladium on the surface of the membrane which contains over 30% of this element, should not considerably influence the permeability of the membrane for hydrogen. The membrane hydrogen permeability is correlated to permeation activation energy: the lower activation energy is, the higher permeability is observed. The activation energy for permeation strongly depends on palladium film thickness. The rapid increase of its value was recorded when the film thickness was growing up. As the result, the increase of the film thickness suppressed hydrogen permeability. Our findings are discussed in terms of a potential barrier between the two different phases.

Objective: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a role in cancerogenesis processing and damage tissues. Furthermore, oncological treatment may impair proper function of the gut barrier. The aim of this study was to measure intestinal permeability in children in clinical remission for solid tumours and to search for a possible relationship between free radicals and the intestinal barrier. No such investigation in children has been reported so far. Research Methods and Procedures: The prospective study consisted of 19 paediatric patients with cancer after completion of chemotherapy. 32 healthy children from the outpatients clinics were recruited for measurement of intestinal permeability and antioxidant barrier as a control group. Intestinal permeability was assessed by measurement of urinary lactulose and mannitol after oral challenge. Antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in erythrocytes were assessed. Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) concentration was measured in serum. Results: Cancer patients excreted less mannitol and more lactulose versus controls. The ratio of lactulose to mannitol was significantly higher in oncological children vs control (mean 0.188 and 0.0453, respectively, p=0.0006,). Significantly higher IMA level in the oncological group vs control was noted (mean 123.8 and 87.3 U/ml, respectively, p=0.0037). No correlation between intestinal permeability and oxidative stress barrier was found. Conclusions: Our data shows that intestinal barrier is damaged in paediatric cancer patients after chemotherapy. IMA is believed to play a protective role in the defence against tissue damage. No correlation was found between these two barriers.

Opis:
The paper deals with the wood’s (in this case pine) longitudinal permeability to air and its possible dependence on the temperature of the pyrolysis. The measurement of permeability was indirect and conducted on the original stand constructed solely for this purpose. Before every measurement a special sample preparation procedure was conducted for each sample group. Every group of samples was preheated up to the temperature previously set in the oxygen-less environment. After that, samples were cooled down to the room temperature. The following parameters were measured directly: sample length and diameter, pressure difference, and time. After numerous measurements of the mentioned values, the permeability of wood to air was calculated using the Darcy’s law for a given pyrolysis temperature. The results show a distinct dependence between the wood’s permeability to air and the pyrolysis temperature. The minimum value of the permeability is on the level of 0.56 D for temperature of 50 ◦C and is growing up to the value of 5.8 D (over ten times of the initial value) for the temperature of 350 ◦C.

Laboratory assessment of permeability of a groundwater protective barrier. The paper presents results of laboratory assessment of permeability of cement-bentonite self hardening mixtures which have recently been the most often used for construction of cut–off walls mitigating hazard of sanitary landfi lls. Laboratory tests were carried out on reconstituted and natural (undisturbed) material of the barrier. Due to the fact that actual permeability characteristics of reconstituted material are time and density dependent, changes of permeability are described against those variables. Comparison of these data with test results obtained for undisturbed material help to understand the process of changing properties of the barrier in the environment.

Application of enhance oil recovery methods (EOR) as carbon dioxide injection (CO2-EOR) can increase technological or economical production indicators. For the evaluation of process effectiveness, full scale simulation model is used. Numerical models require large number of high quality geological and production data. However, the necessary data may be uncertain therefore microscale laboratory experiment and modeling can provide a knowledge to understand the fluid flow phenomena. In this paper the authors propose an integrated decision model coupling laboratory measurements of displacement with the numerical simulation of flow. First step consists of routine rock properties determination, after that core sample geometry, porosity and permeability were reconstructed in numerical reservoir simulator. Simple core model was combined with relative permeability measurements for oil - water and oil - carbon dioxide as well as fluid properties. Calibrated to laboratory measurements simulation model was used to analyze the process of CO2-EOR and evaluation of its effectiveness depending on technological parameters.

Air-dried samples of glacial till were polluted in the laboratory with petrol and diesel oil. A comparative analysis of natural and contaminated material was made on the basis of mercury porosimetry measurements. The investigation revealed relatively slight changes in the pore space of the polluted samples, which were as sociated with adsorption of hydrocarbons onto the soil particles rather than with microstructural change. Introduction of non-polar organic fluid into soil pores did not cause rearrangement of the natural soil structure. Due to the initial air-dried state of the soil material, these findings pertain to unsaturated soils only. These results contribute to the crucial, but still poorly recognized problem of the engineering geology properties of organic contaminated soils.

This study aimed to examine the performance of fly ash mixed materials with bentonite binder (FAB) as a recent low-cost containment system to withstand leachate infiltration. The mixture of fly ash with clay (bentonite) can increase the strength of stability and strengthen cohesion bonds between molecules. Direct shear, falling head, Atterberg limit and specific gravity test have been conducted as a preliminary study to determine the precise mixture composition of fly ash-bentonite (FAB) landfill liners. Some bentonite composition: 0% (FAB0), 15% (FAB15), 20% (FAB20), 25% (FAB25) and 25% – cured with NH4Cl (FAB25s) for 24 hours, which mixed with fly ash, showed the value of shear stability at normal stress reaching 9.5 kNm-2, 15.48 kNm-2, 45.06 kNm-2, 46.26 kNm-2 and 13.67 kNm-2, respectively. It showed that the greater the content of bentonite in the mixture, the higher the shear stress produced. Curing with saline solution can reduce the shear stress of the FAB mixture. The safety test results using Geoslope/W® show that the addition of bentonite will increase bonding between particles, bearing capacity, and shear strength of the material. The largest safety factor of 1.674 obtained from FAB20 material meets the safety standard for short-term slope stability. The use of fly ash material with bentonite is expected to be an alternative landfill liner material.

A cell containing two compartments was used to analyze the properties of membrane. The results showed that the maximum diffusion permeability coefficients for NaCl, C2H3NaO2, and CH3COOH were 6.08×10-9 m2/s, 13.29×10-11 m2/s, and 25.95×10-11 m2/s, respectively. The increase in the CH3COOH solution concentration was found to improve the diffusion permeability. However, the NaCl and C2H3NaO2 solutions exhibited decreases in diffusion permeability with solution concentration. There was a significant increase in diffusion permeability with temperature.

Opis:
This study discusses results of experiments on hydrodynamic assessment of gas flow through backbone (skeletal) porous materials with an anisotropic structure. The research was conducted upon materials of diversified petrographic characteristics – cokes. The study was conducted for a variety of hydrodynamic conditions, using air. The basis for assessing hydrodynamics of gas flow through porous material was a gas stream that results from the pressure forcing such flow. The results of measurements indicate a clear impact of the type of material on the gas permeability, and additionally – as a result of their anisotropic internal structure – to a significant effect of the flow direction on the value of gas stream. In aspect of scale transfer problem, a method of mapping the flow geometry of skeletal materials has been developed and usefulness of numerical methods has been evaluated to determine pressure drop and velocity distribution of gas flow. The results indicate the compliance of the used calculation method with the result of experiments.
